  • As fun as it is, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ reveals the character’s narrative weakness

When director Taika Waititi took over Thor and gave us the enjoyable ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ the character had already been established in two solo movies and two Avengers movies. He had a lot to work with: a troubled relationship with his brother Loki, experience working with a team like the Avengers, and so on. In ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ he had carte blanche to change the tone of the movie and infuse Waititi’s own brand of humor, which breathed new life into the character and the franchise. It was carried over into the succeeding Avengers movies such as ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

But in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ most of Thor’s storylines were given closure. He had relinquished his throne to Valkyrie and left the remaining Asgardians to start anew on Earth. He had lost his brother and the loss he experienced in ‘Infinity War’ found a sort of resolution by the end of ‘Endgame.’ He had redeemed himself.

Where can the character go now?

And this is where ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ ends up being a mixed bag for me. The first half of the movie depicts Thor once again as the blonde himbo, whose massive god-like ego is the crux of a lot of the humor. It’s good for a few laughs but it seems that the character is stuck in some cartoonish version of himself. This film is Thor’s eighth appearance in the MCU and while this iteration only really came to the fore in ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ it feels tired. It is as if the events of the previous movie didn’t have any effect on him and sometimes, he even seems dumber than before. Sure, it’s great for a few laughs but there’s just so much of it.

The first half of the film feels more like a sequence of plot points and funny gags that are interspersed with the actual story of this film. The more important parts of the story – that of the villain, Gorr, the God Butcher, and that of Jane Foster – don’t get as much screen time and that’s what I’m looking for as I come in watching a superhero movie. The jokes and the gags are great but not at the expense of the struggle and tension and the stakes.

Taika Waititi can definitely balance out tragedy and comedy in equal measure. ‘Jojo Rabbit’ does this exceptionally well. Even with all the jokes and gags of ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ we were able to see the bonds between Loki and Thor heal and Thor making the ultimate sacrifice by allowing Asgard to fall to save the Asgardians.

In ‘Thor: Love and Thunder,’ the romantic comedy aspects of the film undermine the pulsing heart at the core of Jane Foster’s story, which could have been a nice space for Thor’s character growth. Instead, Waititi leans deeper into the whimsy, which is unexpected and surprising, but it doesn’t help build up the love story of its two lead characters that when it hits the final act of the film, the resolutions of their character arcs don’t have as much weight as it could.

Because the latter half of the film is definitely far better than how the film starts, it’s only then that Waititi emphasizes the stakes. It doesn’t have the urgency or the drama that the scenes ask for. It’s such a shame because Christian Bale looks like he is having fun playing Gorr, and Natalie Portman nails each dramatic beat. In fact, Jane Foster has such an interesting character arc and shows great agency but the depth of Jane’s situation – taking the mantle of Thor and why – has no time to really build.

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ has all the components of a proper comic book movie. It has the action and the special effects but they don’t really seem to be at par with ‘Thor: Ragnarok.’ It’s only really impressive and refreshing when Thor, Jane Foster, and Valkyrie take on Gorr. The choreography in those scenes are spectacular.

What ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ has proven is that Thor doesn’t seem to do too well on his own. As a character, he’s a team player who needs Loki or the other members of the Avengers for him to realize his own narrative potential. It isn’t until he meets Jane that Thor becomes remotely interesting, outside his whimsical, buffoonery. A character this powerful needs something to ground him otherwise there aren’t many places to go narratively.

Interestingly enough, the ending addresses this narrative demand but it didn’t need half of its 119-minute running time to get to that point. It’s fun. I had fun. But it’s not up there amongst the other MCU films.

After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor is back for his fourth solo film but this time, another Thor wields Mjolnir!

Chris Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi have teamed up yet again to bring us Thor: Love and Thunder, chronicling the God of Thunder’s latest space adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as his new quest to put a stop to Gorr the God Butcher. Alongside him in his mission is Jane Foster as the new Thor, Valkyrie, and the lovable Korg.

Watch the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder below:

Excited to see Thor: Love and Thunder on the big screen? On this list, we’ve rounded up some interesting facts that you might want to know about the new Marvel movie.

    1. Taika Waititi directs the fourth Thor film.

Thor is now the superhero with the most number of solo films in the MCU with the release of this fourth installment. This is also the second film directed by Taika Waititi, following his successful direction of Thor: Ragnarok. In case you didn’t know, Waititi also gives life to Thor’s trusted ally, Korg.

    2. Jane Foster wields the Mjolnir.

It has long been revealed that Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will become the female Thor in the next film, but the story behind this turn of events has yet to be revealed. If you’re wondering how this happened in the comics, it was after Thor realized that gods were not worthy of humanity’s adoration– thanks to Gorr the God Butcher toying with his mind. This makes him incapable of lifting his mighty hammer. Jane Foster, who had cancer at the time, found that she was worthy and transforms into the goddess Thor, taking the place of the then powerless Odinson.

    3. Thor meets Zeus.

Norse mythology has long been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but shortly after Moon Knight featured Egyptian gods, the latest Thor film will also be bringing in the Greek gods into the MCU. Russell Crowe plays Zeus, who makes an appearance in the film’s trailer after Thor and the gang find themselves in Olympus.

    4. Gorr the God Butcher’s long nails almost incapacitated Christian Bale.

Fans were awed by Christian Bale’s latest transformation as the film’s Gorr the God Butcher, a terrifying vilain who is hellbent on killing all of the gods. In an interview with Deadline, the actor shared how the character’s long nails became a problem for him.

“It rendered me completely incapable of everything. I was pathetic,” said Bale. “I found myself thinking things like, ‘I don’t think I can walk because I’ve got long nails.’ It affected my brain. I was like, ‘I can’t eat, I’ve got long nails.’ I was trying to type. I couldn’t do anything.”

    5. Matt Damon will be back as actor Loki.

In Thor: Ragnarok, fans were surprised to see Matt Damon make a cameo appearance in a play happening within the film. Damon played the actor starring as Loki, while Chris Hemsworth’s brother Luke played Thor in the play. In an interview with Jess Cagle on Sirius XM, Damon confirmed that he will also be returning as actor Loki in the upcoming film.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Cast and Creator on Thor’s Fourth Solo Film, ’80s Rock Music, and More

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder is the direct sequel to the 2017 film Thor: Ragnarok and the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike Doctor Strange 2 which was released prior this film, Thor’s fourth standalone movie in the MCU is filled with dance sequences, enchanted weapons, and ’80s rock.

Watch the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer below:

In a global press conference, Thor: Love and Thunder cast members Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster/The Mighty Thor), Tessa Thompson (King Valkyrie), and Christian Bale (Gorr the God Butcher) are joined by director Taika Waititi and producer and president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige talk about how this fourth standalone movie for Thor happened, the aesthetic behind the song choices, and more.

The press conference began with Chris Hemsworth who plays Thor shares that when Taika Waititi got involved, he brought out his immature, young, and adolescent quality that Thor now has, which he didn’t have in the original films. “Embodying this space as a  child would and enjoying all of it and being caught up in  the wonder and the fascination of all of it,” Hemsworth adds.

When asked why Thor is the only character in the MCU to have four solo films in his journey, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige says that the viewers respond well to Chris Hemsworth and to everything that he does. He also says that Taika Waititi brings another dimension that was always there with Chris. “For so long, we were thinking on how to make Thor more relatable and more connected to the audience and now that they are with him now, we realized we could go to a part four,” he adds.

Natalie Portman is back in this film as Doctor Jane Foster and as we have seen in the trailers, as Mighty Thor. She recalls what it was like wearing Chris’ costume which she has seen him wear all these years. “Trying the version on myself and getting fitted for all the arm cuffs, boots, and everything else was pretty surreal for the first time.”

Moving on to Gorr The God Butcher, Christian Bale shares that what everyone was looking for in Chris Hemsworth, they looked for the polar opposite for his character. “Someone not relatable, a bit of a loner, creepy, and someone no one wants to be around,” he shares. He also says that it’s a lot easier to play a villain than it is a hero. “The beauty of it is that Taika [Waititi] can make it bloody hilarious and then really moving in this story. I don’t know if it’s pushing it too much to say sympathy, but you sort of understand why this guy is making awful decisions.”

Valkyrie began his journey as a scavenger and now she is the King of New Asgard. Tessa Thompson looks back at what Stan Lee talked a lot about before that whether it’s a villain or a hero, there’s something that connects them to their power. “It was really fun to both try to inhabit the spirit and the kind of physicality that it takes to be a hero.” Valkyrie was a professional soldier for thousands of years and now finds herself kind of stuck in bureaucracy. “She’s really missing being on the battlefield and missing her sisters, so it’s been great to get to have that again with Natalie in particular as Mighty Thor,” she adds.

Soundtrack-wise, there are plenty of Guns N’ Roses in the film. Director Taika Waititi reveals that it has always been a dream of his and jokes that they wanted to spend as much money as they possibly could on some songs. “The whole aesthetic around the film was for it to be this bombastic, loud, colorful palette, which kind of reflected, like, spray painted panel vans in  the eighties and rock album covers.” And boy, did they deliver. “Even the title treatment for the film, it’s the kind of thing I would’ve drawn on my school book in class when I wasn’t listening,” he quips.
