    MOVIE REVIEW: The Bride!

From the moment the film starts, writer and director Maggie Gyllenhaal already lets us know that The Bride! is going to be an unhinged, out-of-the-box movie experience. The prologue, shot in black and white, has Jessie Buckley as Mary Shelley, speaking to us like a spectre, fully aware of her legacy as the creator and writer of Frankenstein and how she would want to continue this story.

This dense, articulate monologue, amplified by stylized language allows us to get a sense of Mary Shelley as a person. This is important as Shelley then possesses the body of Ida (also played by Buckley), a woman in 1930s Chicago (the film now shifts to color) with connections to the mob.

    The Bride!

With Shelley inside her, she goes on a verbal rampage that leads to ruffling a mobster’s feathers. She is then killed.

    The Bride!

Frankenstein’s Monster (Christian Bale), who is later called Frank, visits Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening) because she is a leading scientist in “invigoration,” or bringing people back to life using the techniques that Dr. Frankenstein employed a hundred years ago.

    The Bride!
    The Bride FP 119r

Frank is lonely, and he convinces Dr. Euphronious to reanimate the body of Ida.

    The Bride FP 001

When she is revived, Ida’s mind is fuzzy and weak, making it easier for Mary Shelley to take control. Frank is smitten with her, and with Shelley mostly in control of Ida’s reanimated body, she causes havoc and chaos wherever she goes. As Shelley, having been in the afterlife, knows things, she calls out men’s behaviour while acting freely and loosely in public.

    The Bride 06932rv2c

At a club, she is attacked by three men, whom Frank kills to protect her. Their monstrous appearance leads the press to call them “The Monster Killers,” and Frank and Ida/Mary Shelley make a run for it, causing chaos, creating a movement that empowers women to fight back, while being chased by police detective Jake Wiles (Peter Sarsgaard) and his secretary Myrna Mallow (Penelope Cruz), who is actually a brilliant detective herself.

    The Bride FP 043r

I use the word “unhinged” when I talk about this movie, and I mean it in the best way possible. Maggie Gyllenhaal, along with cinematographer Lawrence Sher and production designer Karen Murphy, turns 1930s Chicago into a gothic, punk fever dream that sometimes leans into a nightmare. Gyllenhaal is not afraid to get gross, gruesome, and brutal.

    The Bride 31966rc

The performances are all heavily stylized – Penelope Cruz delivers a magnificent 1930s pulp-fiction persona – and Christian Bale is incredible at tempering Frank’s soft, and vulnerable side with moments of tempestuous fury.

    The Bride FP 202r
    The Bride FP 009

Annette Bening shows off her talents, creating a woman and scientist who seems more interested in the science than the people involved, until something inside her stirs. Her reactions to the amazing, impossible things she witnesses feel spontaneous and grounded.

The Bride! Maggie Gyllenhaal and Annette Bening

But the true star here is Jessie Buckley. As Mary Shelley, she is an overwhelming persona, erupting with an explosive vocabulary that she flings like weapons in every scene. When she shifts to Ida, she is caught in a hazy mental fog that denies her full autonomy over her body and senses.

    The Bride FP 209r

Buckley shifts between these two characters with remarkable ease, and the effect onscreen is mesmerizing. Honestly, if she doesn’t win the Academy Award for her role in Hamnet she could easily win it for her role in The Bride!.

The Bride! Jake Gyllenhaal and Maggie Gyllenhaal

What’s deceptive about this film is how it feels focused on the story, allowing the film to go everywhere – Frank’s obsession with a Hollywood musical star (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), the mobster (Zlatko Buric) chasing after Ida to finish her off, and the surprising connection Ida has with Jake – even providing a spectacular dance number that pays tribute to the 1974 comedy film Young Frankenstein by Mel Brooks.

    The Bride FP 068r

The number evolves into a madcap performance that makes no real sense but is entirely welcomed into this fray. Meanwhile, on the periphery, a story about women galvanized to fight back against the oppression of men lingers on the outskirts of the narrative. There’s genuine anger here and frustration, and Buckley’s Ida/Mary Shelley becomes the metaphor for this, with her unintended reactions to what is happening to her manifesting in the social change that is happening out in the boundaries of this story’s reality. It also makes sense that Dr. Euphronious is also complicit in the domination and control of women’s bodies, since there are some women who do end up serving the patriarchy as well.

    The Bride 14515rv2

This anger and frustration are wrapped in a gorgeously imagined film that is unafraid to be self-aware, off-kilter, brutal and grotesque, and irreverent. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s sophomore effort is a powerful statement, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

    My Rating: 4.5 Stars

Everything to Know About Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “THE BRIDE!” Starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, Showing March 4

A Legend Reborn — With Fire and Feeling

Get ready for a thrilling new vision of a timeless myth. Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal reimagines The Bride of Frankenstein with striking originality in THE BRIDE! — a sweeping, emotionally charged tale set against the gritty glamour of 1930s Chicago.

Opening in cinemas and IMAX beginning March 4, 2026 (North America on March 6), the film boasts a powerhouse cast led by Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe and BAFTA winner Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) and Academy Award winner Christian Bale.

    Watch the trailer here:

Jessie Buckley: “How Much of Me Can You Love?”

At the center of the story is The Bride — not as a silent creation, but as a woman fiercely claiming her identity.

For Jessie Buckley, the role is layered with longing and defiance.

“I think the title THE BRIDE! isn’t about being individual or being on your own. The Bride means that you are absolutely in relationship to something or someone. And in this case, The Bride is in a deep, meaningful, powerful, passionate relationship with Frank, and she wants that to be absolute. And she also wants to be in relationship with the world. She doesn’t want to be locked in a room, in an attic.”

But this Bride refuses to be confined. She yearns for a love that accepts her wholly — not in fragments. Locked away? Silenced? Diminished? Absolutely not.

“She wants love, and she wants her mind to be alive. She doesn’t want to have to be deciphered, or have parts of her accepted and other parts of her not accepted. And I think this film is about autonomy of the self and incubating your monster, your shadows so you can be in undeniable full bodied relationship with each other. How much of me can you actually love? Not just the idea of me.”

Through Gyllenhaal’s lens, the film explores autonomy, shadow selves, and the courage it takes to be fully seen. It’s a passionate meditation on connection — and the radical act of being understood.

Christian Bale’s Monster with a Punk Edge

Opposite Buckley stands Christian Bale as a lonely Frankenstein, searching for companionship in a world that misunderstands him.

    The Bride Peter Sarsgaard 1
Jessie Buckley as The Bride, and Christian Bale as Frankenstein, on the set of “The Bride!” with director Maggie Gyllenhaal

From the moment he read the script, Bale was captivated.

“I thought, this is a movie I would love to see,” he says.

Acknowledging the indelible mark left by Boris Karloff, Bale sought to honor the character’s cinematic legacy while grounding it in Mary Shelley’s original spirit.

“I always love the challenge of failing miserably,” says Bale. “There have been so many renditions of Frankenstein’s monster done – and in my mind they all pale in comparison to Boris Karloff [who gained iconic status for playing Frankenstein in “Frankenstein” (1931) and its sequels] – so I wanted to give a nod to him, but also incorporate Mary Shelley’s original take. It can be quite impulsive, the choices we make depending on the mood you’re in.”

What struck him most? The film’s daring tone.

“but this one really stuck with me as something unique and original, with a punk rock sensibility… and more than anything, I just wanted to see this movie.”

    A Director in Command

Behind the camera, Maggie Gyllenhaal commands a massive production with striking clarity and confidence.

The Bride Jessie Buckley Christian Bale Maggie Gyllenhaal 1
Jessie Buckley as The Bride, and Christian Bale as Frankenstein, on the set of “The Bride!” with director Maggie Gyllenhaal

Peter Sarsgaard, who plays the detective tracking the outlaw lovers, describes her as unstoppable.

“She has such unlimited energy. And the fact that she has all these cameras going, all these monitors, and she’s able to give notes. She’s doing cross-coverage. You have to look at two monitors at the same time and note two actors at the same time. And it’s so fluid and easy for Maggie, working with actors. I mean, this is a huge logistical thing. This is like putting on a party that is the biggest party you could possibly arrange.”

It’s a complex logistical undertaking, yet Gyllenhaal navigates it seamlessly — balancing spectacle with intimate performances.

Annette Bening, who portrays the groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious, was drawn to the script’s powerful voice.

“What stood out for me is the original voice of the writing,” says Bening, who plays Dr. Euphronious. “Maggie’s take on the story and how she’s able to really incorporate her contemporary concerns, her contemporary thoughts, her life experience, what she wants to say about what’s happening now in the world, but using this story to really give flight to this incredible, imaginative, thoughtful, passionate voice inside of her. So, the script is, for me, original. Completely original.” Gyllenhaal, who plays a matinee idol in the film, says of his sister Maggie’s story, “I was blown away by the world she created on the page.”

Jake Gyllenhaal, who appears in the film as a charismatic matinee idol, agrees. “I was blown away by the world she created on the page.”

    Penélope Cruz on Moral Awakening

Oscar winner Penélope Cruz plays Myrna Malloy, assistant to Detective Wiles. After meeting The Bride, Myrna begins to question her mission — and the society she serves.

The Bride Penelope Cruz Peter Sarsgaard 1
Jessie Buckley as The Bride, and Christian Bale as Frankenstein, on the set of “The Bride!” with director Maggie Gyllenhaal

“There is something that happens to Myrna when she encounters The Bride – her energy, her mission and her words, and how Myrna can identify with the stories that the Bride shares in that scene, about her and about other women. Myrna has not been in those situations herself, but she has found in her life, in her work, many cases related to women being treated like that,” shares Cruz.

Tasked with stopping The Bride and Frankenstein, Myrna instead finds herself moved by their story — and unsettled by what it reveals.

“I feel like she has an immediate connection, and she starts having a conflict of, ‘I’m meant to save the world from The Bride and Frank – what if it’s the other way around? What if they are actually more sane than most of us, or most of the majority of people?’ And I feel like that conflict is inside her through the entire movie, and it only grows. The more she finds out about The Bride and about Frank and their love story, the more it’s like two fish swimming in opposite directions. She’s supposed to get rid of them, but actually what they represent makes a lot more sense than a lot of the things that she sees every day, and that are presented to her as good or ethical or right, and it doesn’t make sense to her.”

Her character’s internal struggle intensifies as the narrative unfolds, creating a compelling moral tension that pulses through the film.

    Murder, Romance, and Cultural Rebellion

From Maggie Gyllenhaal, the Oscar-nominated writer-director of The Lost Daughter, comes a bold cinematic spectacle.

    In THE BRIDE!:

    • A lonely Frankenstein (Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago.
    • He seeks the help of Dr. Euphronious (Bening) to create a companion.
    • A murdered young woman is revived — and The Bride (Buckley) is born.

What follows is electrifying: murder, possession, a radical cultural movement, and a combustible love affair that defies societal norms.

The ensemble cast includes Buckley, Bale, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz.

  • Maggie Gyllenhaal Reimagines a Horror Icon with Fierce Agency and Emotional Power in “The Bride!”

Maggie Gyllenhaal Reimagines a Horror Icon with Fierce Agency and Emotional Power in “The Bride!”

    A Cultural Icon—Finally Given a Voice

It all began with a spark of curiosity.

While attending a party, Academy Award nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal noticed a tattoo of the Bride of Frankenstein. Instantly, a question formed: How had a character with barely any screen time become such a lasting symbol in pop culture?

“I saw this tattoo of the Bride of Frankenstein at a party and I thought, “Something about this character has captured our culture,’” says Academy Award nominee Gyllenhaal. “And I then went back and watched the movie [“Bride of Frankenstein” (1935)]  for the first time, because I had never seen it, and I found it really interesting that she’s not really in it. I will say Elsa Lanchester makes a real impact. I mean, she’s in it for three minutes, but she has somehow taken the culture by storm. But to be honest, she doesn’t talk. She doesn’t speak. She doesn’t get an opportunity to express herself. And I thought it was an interesting puzzle. This guy [Frankenstein] understandably is so lonely looking for a mate. But then, just anyone will do, and bringing someone back who doesn’t have any agency herself. So, what happens if you take that same format, that same story, but you give her a huge amount of agency, and give her a huge amount of need, and intelligence, and soulfulness, and vulnerability, and power? Then what happens? That seemed like a puzzle worth getting into.”

That absence became the seed of something bold.

What if the Bride had agency? What if she possessed intelligence, vulnerability, longing, and immense power? What if she wasn’t simply created to cure someone else’s loneliness—but had desires of her own?

With The Bride!, Gyllenhaal transforms that compelling question into an electrifying cinematic experience.

    Watch the trailer here:

A Revolution Born in 1930s Chicago

Set against the gritty backdrop of 1930s Chicago, The Bride! follows a lonely Frankenstein (Academy Award winner Christian Bale) who seeks the help of groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious, played by five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening.

Together, they revive a murdered young woman.

    And the Bride is born.

But what unfolds is far from the obedient companion Frankenstein imagined. Instead, she emerges as a force—complex, searching, alive with purpose. What follows spirals into murder, possession, a radical cultural movement, and a volatile romance between two outsiders trying to define love on their own terms.

Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is a daring reinvention that pulses with urgency and emotion.

    Jessie Buckley’s Fierce Transformation

Taking on the titular role is Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley, whose magnetic performance promises to leave audiences shaken and inspired.

“It’s intense. It’s a wild abandoned life force. It’s passion on the brink. It’s a revolution. It’s a new language!” Buckley says.

This Bride refuses to settle for half-truths or half-love. Reborn into a fractured world, she demands autonomy and authenticity. She seeks not just connection—but the full story.

“It’s giving voice to The Bride who has never been given a voice before. She’s not satisfied to just be reinvigorated as mate. She wants autonomy of the self. And goes on a journey to discover herself in this world so she can be fully in a relationship with Frank. She wants the full story. She can’t be in a relationship that’s half-full. She wants the whole truth, because I think once she’s reborn, she demands absolute life, and absolute love. And it isn’t perfect. It’s a risk, y’know to live and love like that! Our potential to do all sorts of things is huge, and the bride and frank do some fucked up things. But it isn’t without consequence.”

And that kind of living? It comes with risk.

Flawed, unpredictable, and fiercely human, the Bride’s journey becomes a powerful exploration of identity, desire, and consequence.

Crafted for IMAX, Designed for the Heart

Though epic in scope, Gyllenhaal made one thing clear: spectacle would serve emotion—not overshadow it.

“Instead of having it be only this big world-building set piece, or this big action sequence, we instead decided to grow where it made sense emotionally,” says Gyllenhaal in a new IMAX featurette for the film.

The film’s expanding frame mirrors the emotional shifts of its characters, creating a visceral experience that feels deeply immersive.

“We built the expanding of the frame to coalesce with emotional shifts and changes. You feel it, like in your chest. It’s got the roller coaster aspect that I think IMAX offers. But then it has this other aspect of cracking open your heart… It’s trippy.”

Christian Bale echoes the excitement: “I can’t wait to see that.”
