  • WATCH: Vecna Actor Apologizes to Eddie Munson for ‘Stranger Things 4’ Finale

Stranger Things‘ Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays Vecna in the show, is seeking forgiveness from Eddie Munson’s actor Joseph Quinn and his fans for killing off the character in the season four finale.

In a video released by Netflix, Bower and Quinn go face to face, with the former making a humorous apology for Vecna’s behavior during the latest season of the show. Watch the clip below:

“Today, I’m here to apologize,” says Bower. “But my apology isn’t just for you. It’s for the main victim of all this.” Joseph Quinn enters the scene to face Bower, who continues to do his spiel. While it seems like Quinn isn’t ready to accept his apology, Vecna’s actor gives him a gift which he happily accepts.

In the finale of Stranger Things 4, the misunderstood Hellfire Club founder Eddie Munson sacrificed himself to further distract Vecna’s Demobats, following his epic performance of Metallica’s Master of Puppets in the Upside Down. In the end, the gang won against Vecna but not without consequences. Besides Eddie losing his life, Max almost lost hers while the Upside Down seems to continue to bleed through Hawkins.

Stranger Things is set to have its epic conclusion next season, but details about its release are yet to be announced. Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things also stars Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Sadie Sink. You can stream all four seasons of Stranger Things exclusively on Netflix.

  • New ‘Death Note’ Adaptation from ‘Stranger Things’ Creators Announced by Netflix

Netflix is making another attempt to adapt the hit manga and anime series Death Note, this time into a live-action TV show!

This comes with the announcement that the Duffer Brothers, creators of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, will be producing more titles through their new production company Upside Down Pictures. Among their slate of projects in active development is the live-action adaptation of the renowned title from Japan.

This will be Netflix’s second attempt at adapting the series following their highly-criticized 2017 film of the same name directed by Adam Wingard. Considering the success of Stranger Things, this will stir excitement from both fandoms.

Created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows the story of the high school student Light Yagami, who picks up a notebook that could kill people just by writing their names on its pages. Having a strong sense of righteousness, Light uses it to rid the world of criminals while his identity was kept under the name Kira. He soon captures the attention of the world’s greatest detective, a mysterious figure only known as L, who taunts him into a battle of wits where the winner will be the one to uphold their take on justice.

More details about the new Death Note adaptation are yet to be revealed. Upside Down Pictures’ slate of projects also includes an adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub‘s The Talisman, a new stage play set within the world and mythology of Stranger Things, and a Stranger Things spin-off series.

  • ‘Stranger Things 4’ Writers Reveal Some Unscripted Moments from the Season

After releasing the explosive and emotional last two episodes of Stranger Things 4 last Friday, the writers of the hit Netflix series have revealed to fans some of the unscripted moments from this season.

Through their Twitter account, the writers shared three scenes where the cast members improvised. Check them out below (Spoilers Alert!):

Viewers were quick to get attached to the new character, Eddie Munson, the misunderstood leader of the Hellfire Club. This made his demise even more painful to watch, with Dustin listening to his last words about finally getting that diploma. According to the Stranger Things writers, that last phrase “I love you, man” was actually improvised by actor Joseph Quinn.

Another emotional scene from the finale was Lucas holding Max’s dying body after suffering from Vecna’s curse. The writers revealed that the elder Sinclair’s desperate plea “Erica, help” was actually improvised by actor Caleb McLaughlin.

Finally, the writers also shared that the kiss between Joyce and Hopper was not part of the script, and was only added in by stars David Harbour and Winona Ryder during filming.

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things 4 follows Eleven and the gang as they battle another threat from the Upside Down– Vecna. This monster uses its victims’ dark past to kill them for a sinister purpose that could endanger everyone in Hawkins.

  • Great in parts, ‘Stranger Things 4’ Volume 1 lacks the intimacy of past seasons as the world gets bigger

It has been a long while since season 3 of the Duffer Brothers’ hit series ‘Stranger Things’ premiered on Netflix. Three years have passed since the last season and so much has changed. The characters have all grown up now with the younger set moving on to high school, Joyce (Winona Ryder) takes her family – Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Will (Noah Schnapp), and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) – to California to start anew, the rest of the group have stayed in Hawkings, Indiana, while (as the trailer suggested) Hopper (David Harbour) has found himself in Russia.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQEondeGvKo

Volume One, the first seven episodes of season 4, is one gigantic set-up with the characters all spread out in different locations around America and the world. The first three seasons had everyone split up but just within the confines of Hawkings (except that one season when Eleven went to the city and met Eight) but the world of ‘Stranger Things’ has gotten bigger now. In Volume One alone, the story shifts between Hawkings, California, Russia, and later to the open road, Alaska, Nevada, and Utah. While the largeness in scope truly makes the world of ‘Stranger Things’ bigger and the world-building richer, what it does is take away from what made the first three seasons so enjoyable.

The hustle and bustle of previous installments meant that the split-up characters eventually bump into each other as they must face a terror from the Upside Down, the shadow world parallel to ours where monsters exist. With such distance between the characters, it’s hard to create that sense of narrative intimacy. There was always some level of joy when the younger set collided with the young adult set – Jonathan, Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Steve (Joe Keery), and later addition Robin (Maya Hawke) – and then later on with the older set of Joyce and Hopper and the parents.

Stranger Things 4 Volume 1 Review

But there’s not much of that here. That sort of narrative interweaving only really happens in Hawkings and it quickly happens because the characters know each other already and have been through this before. As the Upside Down throws another horrible monster into the fray, this time a powerful creature named Vecna, those in Hawkings quickly band together to solve the case.

That’s when the show really and truly feels like ‘Stranger Things.’ Cut up into four parts – Hawkins, California (split into Joyce and Murray, played by Brett Gelman, and the younger set) and Russia with Hopper – the show feels a little disjointed. It doesn’t help that they split them up into five stories by the halfway point. For the first time in three seasons, I wasn’t interested in all the stories. I actually wanted to skip parts and just focus on one part, which was Hawkins.

Stranger Things 4 Volume 1 Review

By the fourth season, you can tell that the Duffer Brothers and their creative team have run out of steam for some characters. For Joyce, Hopper, Jonathan, Will, and Mike, there doesn’t seem to be anything new to do with them (or even interesting). You can even see this as Jonathan, Will, and Mike start to have less and less scenes as the season progresses. Joyce and Hopper must deal with an external struggle, a tangible goal, and while it does not test Joyce’s character to a point of any real change, Hopper has just one and this is explored only by the last two or three episodes. Prior to that, it’s just trying to survive in Russia.

And while Eleven is poised to be the show’s central figure, her character must endure a necessary trial to get her abilities back but plays out a story we’ve all seen before in one shape or another. It feels more like Eleven’s storyline was meant more to introduce somebody new.

It’s in Hawkins where the show really feels like the show we’ve come to love and it’s there that I want to focus all my attention. It’s in Hawkins, with Nancy, Steve, Robin, Dustin (Gaten Materazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Max (Sadie Sink), Erica (Priah Ferguson), and new addition Eddie (Joseph Quinn), where the mystery of Vecna is truly explored, experienced, and felt.

Stranger Things 4 Volume 1 Review

It’s in Hawkins where the heavy themes are truly explored like radical conservatism and surviving trauma, which are handled in a way that shows their frightening aspects but also still done with a good mix of seriousness and humor. The monster is not that important, though the show manages to pivot that thought later in the season in an interesting way, but his presence is necessary because that’s the impetus for the fun stuff to happen – when the Hawkins group tries to solve the mystery, working together and using past experiences to rationalize their findings. It’s the stuff that pays tribute to old 80s and early 90s movies like ‘The Goonies’ and ‘E.T.; and ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ and the like that gave the show its working DNA.

And on a personal note, I just love how pivotal a Kate Bush song becomes in two episodes of the season. Amazing use of music, as always.

Hopefully, when Volume Two arrives in July, episodes 8 and 9 will interweave the stories again to give us the show we’ve come to love and prepare us for the announced fifth and final season of the show.

And hopefully, they won’t make us wait another three years before we can properly say goodbye.

    My Rating:

    5 stars - Don't Look Up review

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Interviews: Darker Journeys, New Faces, and Vecna of The Upside Down

Are you ready for the biggest and darkest season yet of Stranger Things?

The third season of the hit Netflix series left us dreadful yet hopeful for our favorite characters. After the Battle of Starcourt which resulted in the deaths of Billy and Hopper, we get to see the gang going on their separate ways as the Byers family and Eleven move out of Hawkins for a fresh start.

But as the trailers for the fourth season rolled out, we learned that Hopper is actually still alive and held captive. Soon, the gang will also have to face a new threat brewing between Hawkins and the Upside Down– a sinister being called Vecna.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQEondeGvKo&t

Before the return of the hit Netflix horror sci-fi series this May 27, we got to virtually sit with the cast of the show where they shared more details about the growth of their characters this season, their new nemesis Vecna, and more. The show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, also gave some details about the making of the latest season.

A bigger, darker season that dives deep into the Upside Down mythos.

Through a social media post, the Duffer Brothers confirmed that season 4 will be the penultimate season for the entire series and that it is “bigger than ever.” In fact, with its large scope, season 4 has been divided into two volumes, with the first half getting released this May 27, to be followed by the remaining episodes on July 1.

“We call this our Game of Thrones season,” states Matt Duffer in the press notes provided by Netflix. “Because we have so many different locations. The fact that we’re as spread out as we are this year defines the season more than anything. I think that’s what makes it a very unique and special season of Stranger Things. We have Hawkins, of course, as always, but then on top of that, we have California and Russia. We have storylines in those three major locations, and each has a very distinct feel and look. And all these storylines, disparate as they are, do end up, eventually and inevitably, coming together. It’s a very unique season.”

Ross Duffer also shares how dark this season will be: “We had a lot of fun with the fact that season 3 was set in summer, and it was really technicolor and bright and very poppy. We saw it as our summer blockbuster, but it had one of the darker endings with Hopper being gone and our group splitting up. We continue with that darkness this season. It’s about dread, and it’s also about revelations. We have so many ideas that we accumulate over the years, and this season it feels like we’re finally bringing almost all of them to life. We learn more this season than we ever have about our mythology. We learn a lot about the Upside Down and what this evil force that’s been threatening Hawkins all these years really wants. It’s exciting for us because a lot of the story is uncovered this season. Overall, I would say that the tone is certainly darker than it’s been. The goal was to make this the scariest season yet.”

Whatever happened to Eleven and the gang?

This season, we find Eleven and Will trying to fit in at their new high school in California. According to Ross Duffer, their new suburban home “has a very different vibe. The goal for California was to have an E.T. the Extra-terrestrial, Valley feel to it.”

But this is also the first time that Eleven is away from Hawkins as a new evil emerges to threaten her friends back home. Not only that but she also lost her powers last season.

“She’s helpless even when she learns about what has happened in Hawkins,” explains Matt Duffer. “She’s unable to help them in the same way that she has before. This season, she has to revisit her entire past, which is very traumatic. She has to go back and re-experience a lot of the things she wished she had forgotten. And that is the drive of this season.”

    Stranger Things 4 2

Back at Hawkins, the remaining kids are also navigating the complexities of high school. “We see Lucas as he’s pulled over to the side of the jocks because he’s athletic, and he thinks he has a shot at being popular for once. Dustin and Mike, who are less athletically gifted, drift more naturally to the Hellfire Club, with the nerds and the outsiders. That creates a little bit of a rift between our core characters. Max is completely adrift at the start of the season,” Matt shared.

Meanwhile, the older members of the group are mostly facing some romantic struggles. Nancy and Jonathan are trying to work out their long-distance relationship; Robin is trying to gather some courage to confess to her crush; while Steve Harrington is just lost on how to find a girl he could click with. As for the adults, Joyce and Murray set off on a quest to find and rescue Hopper.

Introducing the Hellfire Club, Eddie Munson, & Argyle.

This season, fans will be introduced to the Hellfire Club, Hawkins High’s Dungeons & Dragons club, which is run by a major new character named Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn.

“Eddie’s not your typical nerd; he’s really into fantasy, but he’s also into heavy metal music,” explains Matt Duffer. “He has a band. He’s an outsider — he’s the ultimate outsider in a lot of ways. He doesn’t fit in at Hawkins High, except among the members of his exclusive club. Eddie is looked down upon and feared in a lot of ways by other Hawkins students. But he offers a place where Dustin and Mike can feel at home.”

    Stranger Things 4 3

The Duffer Brothers also cited how during that time in the ‘80s, there was a concern that D&D’s popularity was leading to a rise in Satanism. Ross Duffer adds: “We were really inspired by that sort of Satanic panic that was happening in and around this time. The documentary series Paradise Lost was an inspiration for both Eddie and the Hellfire Club. We’re really excited about diving into that stuff.”

Another new character that will be introduced this season is Argyle, played by Eduardo Franco. As Ross Duffer put it, Argyle is the “quintessential ‘80s stoner.” A pizza delivery guy, Argyle becomes friends with Jonathan after the Byers moved to California.

Asked about the new characters’ chemistry with the established cast, Joseph Quinn says this about the show’s writing: “They brilliantly take these new energies and throw them into this already very dense broth– character broth– which is working and alive, and there’s something new in there.”

Max and Lucas’ struggles this season.

This season, fans will find Max in a dark place after her stepbrother’s demise during the Battle of Starcourt. Aside from Eleven’s traumas, Max’s struggle to overcome this tragedy will also be highlighted this season. And her being distant will also have an effect on her childhood sweetheart, Lucas, who is also lost in a way this season.

    Stranger Things 4 4
Photo from the Stranger Things Season 4 trailer

“I think we find Max and Lucas just in very different places in their lives,” shares Sadie Sink. “Max is in a lot of pain and in typical Max fashion she doesn’t want anyone to know it. So I think having someone like Lucas who’s extremely caring and was able to see her in a way that a lot of people can’t, I think that’s really scary for her. But Lucas, he just cares too much.”

Caleb McLaughlin adds: “I feel like the distance [between Lucas and Max] has put Lucas in a very vulnerable place […] Max is his happiness, his friend. And when that’s not there, and he sees the things that she’s going through, he’s kind of lost as well. He feels her pain. There’s a lot of stuff going on there. You know in season 3, I forgot how many times Max broke up with him. But at that moment, he gets her back every time. But at this moment, I think he feels like ‘Wait, maybe I won’t be able to, maybe there’s something more than just this relationship.’ It’s bigger than just them, so he’s just trying to figure out what’s happening.”

Vecna and the psychological horror of season 4.

After the Demogorgon, Demodogs, and the Mind Flayer, this season’s big bad comes in the form of Vecna– a terrifying human-like monster that could torture our heroes through their heads.

“The main villain this season is our version of Pinhead or Freddy Krueger. Since season 1, we’ve wanted to include a villain that could actually speak to our characters; that could vocalize their motives and their thoughts, and could also get into our characters’ heads. It’s much more of a psychological horror this year as opposed to just a monster movie,” says Ross Duffer.

The excited fandom of Stranger Things.

The first time we saw the group in season 1, they are just little kids trying to find their friend Will while running away from Eleven’s pursuers. Three seasons later, we are still thrilled to see the next chapter in the lives of our beloved characters, especially now that we’re on its penultimate season.

“A lot of people talk about the nostalgia effect, and how that usually draws people in, especially those who grew up in the 1980s or who were teenagers in the ‘80s,” says Gaten Matarazzo when asked why the show is so popular. “So a lot of people gravitate towards that, but I think young people watch it because it’s pretty cool to see a young cast lead a show like this. And there are a lot of reasons why people show up and stay, because they genuinely start to feel for the show and the characters involved. It’s really wonderful to see how diverse our fanbase is. How many demographics– like older people like it, younger people like it. That’s really cool because that’s not common for shows.”
