  • Film Facts: 5 Things to Know About ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’

    In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the beloved blue hedgehog returns to the big screen, eager to prove he’s a hero as he settles in the small town of Green Hills. We’re introduced to his sidekick, a fox named Tails, and together they embark on a quest to find a powerful emerald that Dr. Robotnik wants to use for destruction. 

    Whether you’ve already seen the sequel or are just planning to catch it in the theaters, here are some interesting facts about ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ that you should check out!

    1. The stars from the first film return for the sequel

    Sonic the Hedgehog 2 stars James Marsden and Ben Schwartz return as Sheriff Tom Wachowski and the voice of Sonic, respectively, and also returning are Tika Sumpter (Tom’s wife Maddie), Natasha Rothwell (as Rachel, Maddie’s sister) and Adam Pally (Tom’s deputy sheriff friend). Jim Carrey reprises his role as Dr. Robotnik, sporting a newly enhanced mustache in the sequel! 

    2. Tails is voiced by the longtime voice actor of Tails in the video games

    Colleen O’Shaughnessey’s voice goes from video game to big screen! She is actually a longtime voice of Tails in the video games, so fans of games can look forward to her familiar voice as Sonic the Hedgehog’s two-tailed ally. She’s also a voice talent for other popular titles like Digimon, Naruto, and Bleach.

    3. Idris Elba voices Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik’s new partner-in-crime

    The Suicide Squad and Pacific Rim actor is no stranger to voice acting. Idris Elba has voiced several other characters in films such as Zootopia, The Jungle Book, and Finding Dory. In Sonic 2, he voices Knuckles the Echnida, a powerful fighter and the sole survivor of his tribe. In the sequel, he teams up with Dr. Robotnik to hunt for the powerful emerald.

    4. There’s a comic one-shot prequel to ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’

    ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill’ is a collection of five prequel stories revolving around different ‘Sonic’ characters like Sonic, Dr. Robotnik, and Tails, and introduces Knuckles the Echidna before he lands on the big screen.     5. A third film installment is confirmed, plus a live-action series is slated for 2023

According to Deadline’s exclusive update, they’re further extending the Sonic universe with a third feature film now in development. Additionally, Sega and Paramount+ are teaming up for a live-action Sonic series set to be launched next year!

  • Blue Carpet Premiere Held for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’

    Sonic fans, celebrities, and members of the entertainment press attended the exclusive ‘blue carpet’ premiere Paramount Pictures’ comedy-adventure Sonic the Hedgehog 2, held March 26 at SM North EDSA The Block Cinema in Quezon City.   

    Guests brought their families and children along to celebrate everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog and witness his much-anticipated showdown with Knuckles and the returning Dr. Robotnik.  Sonic saves the day with a little help from his friend Tails.

  • Jim Carrey Returns for Dr. Robotnik’s Revenge in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’

    For Jim Carrey, the role of Dr. Robotnik in Paramount Pictures’ comedy adventure sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 provided the opportunity to return to his legendary film comedy roots.  He says, “Robotnik hit the absurd energy that people really love – and the vibe of films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. Playing Robotnik, I just let the floodgates open!”

    The floodgates remain open – perhaps even wider – for Robotnik’s return in the sequel. The chrome-domed, mega-mustached madman with an I.Q. measuring over 300 is bigger, badder, and funnier, and still getting around in his patented flying ship, the Eggmobile.

    And he has a score to settle with Sonic, who bested Robotnik at the end of the first film, leaving the madcap maniac stranded on a mushroom planet, light years away from Earth. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, we see that Robotnik has spent months alone on the planet. “And if he was crazy in the first movie, he’s absolutely insane in this one, which fits Jim Carrey’s style of acting perfectly,” says producer Toby Ascher.

    Carrey agrees, noting that returning to Robotnik was a chance to go even bigger with a character who, in the first film, was already an ultimate uber-villain. “He just gets bigger and bigger, and more and more of an egomaniac,” he confirms. “He’s also become increasingly frustrated about being bested by puny minds, like Sonic’s. Now, vengeance is job one for Robotnik,” Carrey continues. “Number two, of course, is world domination and the enslavement of humanity. With the help of the Master Emerald, Robotnik wants to transcend his totally dysfunctional, if brilliant mind, and become a demi-god.”

    Robotnik’s newly enhanced mustache, which has achieved magisterial proportions, is, says Carrey, “yet another manifestation of Robotnik’s ego. You know, the bigger the ego, the bigger the chip on his shoulder, the bigger resentment of Sonic – and the bigger the mustache!  The ‘stache gives him power, like Samson’s hair. It becomes a manifestation of his megalomania.”

    Director Jeff Fowler is even more impressed by what Carrey brings to the new film, marveling, “Jim loves getting lost in the character. He has doubled and tripled-down on all the things you love about Robotnik – and about Jim – including the humor, mania and intelligence.”

    The first film’s worldwide success was the culmination of a long journey, for which the filmmakers are grateful. “SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 1 kept everything fans loved about the games while adding unexpected dimensions,” says producer Neal H. Moritz. “The film franchise is a combination of what we love in movies – incredible action, comedy, and a lot of heart that comes with Sonic’s continuing friendships with his human pals, and a new character introduced in this sequel.”

    For director Jeff Fowler, the acclaim and love for the first film from around the world was more than rewarding. “It was the greatest feeling imaginable,” Fowler remembers. “It was an unforgettable experience to see audiences fall in love with the characters, and to have the film be such a great time for families and fans.”

    Of course, that meant the new film had to be bigger – “in so many ways,” Fowler continues. “The action is bigger, as is the humor and heart. And audiences will connect with Sonic in an even bigger way. He’s such a relatable figure in his search for friendship while trying to understand his purpose. What is he supposed to be doing with his incredible powers? But as with all heroes, Sonic doesn’t choose his moment; the moment chooses him.”

    Fowler is also looking for audiences to invest in the journeys of the characters new to the film franchise. “You want the audience to fall in love with Tails and Knuckles the same way they fell for Sonic in the first film,” he concludes.
