We Filipinos have a rich storehouse of cultural touchstones — from art and literature, to everything pop and the very games we played with our childhood friends. Forget about going online, streaming, Steaming, or being zombified to a computer screen or tablet. Our games ruled: all we needed were our friends, our imaginative minds, and a few props here and there: a piece of chalk (piko), some marbles (jolen), slippers and cans from the trash bin (tumbang preso), or plain old arms, fingers, feet (patintero, luksong-baka, agawan-base). A full moon helps now and then — especially for those intense games of taguan. The games — simple, fun, original — were ritualistic and, well, interactive in the offline sense. They taught us kids about the value of teamwork, cooperation, camaraderie, friendship and thinking fast on our feet.
Thus, the members of an art group called Alpas would like to reminisce about those old Pinoy games and our innate sense of play in an exhibition billed as “Taym Pers!,” on view until March 31 at Robinsons Land ARTablado in Robinsons Antipolo.
Kariling by Len Makiramdam
According to the exhibition statement, “Taym Pers!” is all about looking back, taking a breather, reevaluating what we hold dear in the chaos, the maddening gyre of our existence.
“‘Taym pers!’ is the colloquial phrase used by kids that translates to ‘Time first!’ — which means to stop, pause, or take a break while in the middle of a game. Our theme was inspired by the concept of rest and taking a break in the middle of our chaotic and busy lives which we can learn from children’s play. A happy child is the perfect epitome of innocence and pure joy. Children reflect pure hearts and minds that have not yet been hardened by the world’s madness.”
The members of Alpas remember how valuable it was to take part in these communal activities. “Playing games is not only about having fun, developing social skills, problem-solving, and being competitive. It teaches us to increase our creativity and imagination, promote camaraderie, maintain customs, values, and traditions, foster a sense of belongingness, develop patience in taking turns — but most of all, to learn how to follow rules, play fair, accept defeat, and thrive in order to win.”
Grownups then did not think life lessons were rife in games where you hurl your slipper into a discarded can of sardines, but those participatory games fostered — a very valuable act in the current state of solipsism that the world is in — participation. For the kids of yore, those neighborhood games turned out to be a microcosm of the game of life looming ahead.
And the members of Alpas have found an ideal venue to mount their show which conveys a simple yet meaningful message.
ARTablado gives artists from all walks of life a platform to showcase their art, which otherwise would be ignored by other, more mainstream galleries. The space not only aims to discover fresh talent but also encourages these artists to explore new strategies, new methods, new ways of expressing themselves and presenting their ideas in the field of visual arts. Thus, ARTablado becomes a playground for articulation with the means of color and composition.
Malaya Muli by Jun TuplanoTeks by Jami Samson
Now, ARTablado has become a literal playground as the members of Alpas hold activities in the exhibition area such as sungka, piko, etc. They even punctuated the paintings on view with old Pinoy toys — teks, pogs, and trumpo, among others. Were these games put up so viewers can wax nostalgic, so that they can remember how it was to be innocent once more, to harken to simple times before everything descended into pure madness and mayhem. Maybe. But if we take a breather, gather our thoughts, steel ourselves and rally our friends… we can surely win this thing or, at least, compete, give it our all, and with our heads held high.
According to Alpas: “Life is but a big game-field where we have battles to fight. Whatever challenges we may encounter in our daily lives, always remember that in order to win, we must learn how to pause and say, ‘Taym pers!’ and then thrive again.”
Compassion for animals and responsible pet ownership are the core values of Robinsons Malls Happy Pets Club (HPC). Since 2015, HPC has attracted thousands of registered pet owners nationwide, providing them access to information, activities, and support systems that help in promoting pet welfare.
Part of HPC’s year-long programs is the protection of community cats in areas where Robinsons Malls are located, starting with Robinsons Magnolia. To achieve a more holistic approach, HPC has sealed a partnership with known advocacy group, the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF). AKF is a non-profit organization that supports, protects and promotes the welfare and rights of animals in the country.
With the joint initiative of Robinsons Malls and AKF, a sustainable program focused on the community cats will be implemented leading to their adoption under HPC’s The Gift of Furever campaign. Robinsons Malls will defray the costs including food, laboratory tests, medications, spaying/neutering, vaccination, and the overall rehabilitation of the cats. AKF will also provide expert guidance and support including training on the proper handling of community cats.
AKF has all the expertise and appropriate facilities needed to realize the common goal of protecting the animals that are part of the program. Founded in 2002 by the late Charles Leslie Wartenberg with Sweet, the dog he rescued from the dog meat trade, the Foundation has been at the forefront of eliminating the practice of illegal slaughter of dogs for human consumption and have helped introduced legislations or amendments in the existing animal-welfare laws of the Philippines. At present, Atty. Heidi Caguioa heads AKF as its program director.
“AKF’s partnership with RLC is one of our efforts to bring a better tomorrow for the animals. An improved community awareness and involvement brings about that change in human behavior in the way each and everyone treat animals. Let us all remember that animal welfare is everyone’s responsibility and we should work together in creating a safe space for them,” AKF Program Director Atty. Heidi Caguioa said.
“The partnership between Robinsons Malls and AKF strengthens our commitment to responsible pet parenting and to providing support to the communities that we serve. The alliance with a reputable advocacy group like AKF will help us create more positive changes with lasting impact for animal welfare in particular and for the society in general”, says Joel S. Lumanlan, Robinsons Malls VP for Operations and Marketing.
Robinsons Malls HPC currently operates 21 Pet Parks nationwide. This is where HPC regularly hold its major pet activities including The Gift of Furever Home, a pet adoption program; Snip ‘en Snap, a free spay and neuter service; Pet Konsulta, a free consultation with veterinarians; and Pet Bakuna, a free anti-rabies vaccination drive. In 2022, The Gift of Furever Home program has achieved a record 91 percent adoption rate. Under the Snip ‘en Snap program, more than 50 dogs and cats were spayed/neutered which significantly contributed to the control of unwanted litters. The Pet Bakuna Program has vaccinated over 300 pets while more than 200 pet owners received free vet consultation under the Pet Konsulta program.
To say that Gil Francis Maningo is a multi-disciplinary artist is an understatement. This Cebuano wears many hats: as a photographer, a composer, an actor, a recording artist under the OctoArts label, graphic artist in the Chicago Sun Times Magazine, the founder of the brand of shirts dubbed as KULAS (Kusog ug Ligi-on ang Sugbuanon), a student of National Artist Jose Joya and Martino Abellana (“the Amorsolo of the South”), an ardent admirer of American-Indian art, a caricaturist and a visual artist. But for Gil, every role, well, practically everything is a manifestation of grace. And “to experience the illumination of grace in every aspect of life” is the message of his art.
Gil says that his faith in God’s plan gives him the courage to overcome challenges and fears. “Every person has something they cherish, whether conceptual, abstract, or tangible — lavish or miserly. It is a requirement in life that one holds dear to something. But we realize our treasure only when we step out and experience life as an adventure.”
Life is an adventure and Gil’s canvases are adventurous and colored with lightheartedness and controlled abandon. According to the artist: the tedious process of experimentation is an externalization of the gift of curiosity. “During the process of experimenting, one stumbles. But such is life.” Gil’s work exudes “a knight’s courage and a courtier’s confidence.” An observer notes how the artist’s works embody sprezzatura, which means a certain effortlessness, careless grace, a studied nonchalance. Gil’s works “conceal the conscious effort that went into each piece, often done with difficulty. Ultimately, with awe expressed, we are held as its audience.”
Viewers will get to see Gil Maningo’s adventurous forays in color and composition in “Foveo,” an exhibition of 19 paintings presented in cooperation by Robinsons Land’s ArtAblado in conjunction with Art Circle Gallery as part of National Arts Month. “Foveo,” which means “to cherish” in Latin, is on view until Feb. 25 at Level 3, near Sumosam, Robinsons Magnolia. The opening reception will be held on Feb. 18, Saturday.
The culmination of the show is a painting workshop to be facilitated by the artist and is open to 50 participants. Aspiring painters need to download the RMalls+ app and register; collect the free painting workshop voucher; and present the voucher code at the registration area.
RMalls Academy is Robinsons Malls’ learning platform. It aims to give fun and educational classes for everyone. This initiative gives the opportunity to mall-goers to maximize their learning potential and achieve their personal goals while inside Robinsons Malls. RMalls Academy offers various programs such as performing arts, visual arts, and different sports activities.
The workshop will give participants the chance to embark on artistic adventures of their own and maybe someday be like Gil: an artist who has “mastered the ebb and flow of allowing things to fall into place” and “one who surrenders as a medium of the Divine.”
That sense of play, the giving in to a higher self — to be experienced by the Gil Maningos in the making — are the reasons why painting is so undeniably fun and fulfilling.
With Valentine’s Day just a few days away, you might be thinking of ideas to celebrate the occasion to create that perfect love story. Filipinos are truly passionate when it comes to people and things they love and that feeling only intensifies more during the month of February. And for artists, it’s also about celebrating the seven art disciplines with the Philippines celebrating the National Arts Month and its theme “Ani ng Sining, Bunga ng Galing”. As such, ARTablado is doing its part by presenting the exhibit “Art Flare” at the Robinsons Antipolo, which features five prolific visual artists: Neptalie “Rico” Aunzo, Pol Mesina Jr., Nelson Basa, Daniel Dumaguit, and Ramil Tumampos.
Mamang Lambatero #3 by Ramil TumamposLapu-Lapu by Pedrong MasipagEmerald Mountain IV by Nelson Basa
“Art Flare” will feature forty art works, all of which embody each artist’s love for country, with distinct colors and strokes that evoke excitement upon viewing. Themes also include maternal love and of course an appreciation for nature, culture, and religion—all presented to bring out the burning desire of the artists to create something beautiful and meaningful.
Dr. Jose P. Rizal referred the Philippines as the Pearl of the Orient Seas and this fact is not lost on the artists. Aunzo is known for his iconic character “Pedrong Masipag” (Industrious or Hardworking Peter) and “Mariang Marikit.” Both are his depictions of the model Filipino/Filipina—industrious, loving, family-centered, responsible, and with high morals. Aunzo incorporates different Filipino customs, traditions, and values, adding more aesthetic and cultural value to his paintings.
Viva Our Lady of Antipolo by Pol Mesina Jr.Nino Dulce by Daniel Dumaguit
Meanwhile, Mesina’s works focuses on the Filipino as a race and as a nation. With his stylistic, pointillist style, Mesina captures the essence and beauty of the people called “Filipino” and the country named after the King of Spain, the Philippines. With meticulous brushstrokes and theme composition, Mesina highlights the importance of preserving, protecting, and promoting our culture, arts, and the environment. A proud Antipoleño, Mesina also ensures that local tourism in Rizal is promoted in his works.
A prolific sculptor and painter, Basa presents traditional landscape scenes but with a twist. Through interplay of bright and lively colors and texture, Basa has been able to recreate—through imagination—images of nature with all its mystery, majesty, magic, and glory. For example, his mountains and river scenes show either the brightness of dawn (as the golden sun spreads its light all over the place) or the magnificence of the dusk (where King Phoebe bids farewell to his beloved Gaia or Earth).
Tumampos, on the one hand, shows how hardworking and creative Filipinos are through his works. Tumampos, a Kapampangan, is known for his “Bingwitero” (fisherfolks or fishing) series, honoring the efforts of our local fisherfolks in bringing food to our table. He also paints farmers, animals, and still life as well as the courtship tradition of the “harana”.
Known for his abstractions, Dumaguit now focuses on figures in his “Ligaya” series. A homage to his beloved mother who lovingly supported him and supplied him with all his needs while growing up, the series is also dedicated to all strong and independent women who persevered to achieve happiness in life. For Dumaguit, women play a very critical role in human society’s development.
“Naisipan naming mag-exhibit sa ARTablado dahil isa itong platform para maibahagi naming sa mga publiko ang aming sining,” Aunzo says. “Maganda ang lugar ng ARTablado dahil marami ang makakakita ng mga klase ng paintings at sculptures naming.”
ARTablado presents “Art Flare” will be on exhibit until February 15, 2023 at the Upper Ground Floor, North Wing of Robinsons Antipolo. Robinsons ARTablado continues to support Filipino art by providing a second home for artists where they can showcase their creativity and artistic genius.
