Jane Austen’s ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Finds New Life on the Big Screen, Now Exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas

Some stories never get old, especially when they involve complicated romances, broken hearts, and the eternal struggle between following your feelings and doing what’s expected of you.

More than 200 years after Jane Austen first introduced readers to the Dashwood sisters, Sense and Sensibility continues to capture the messy, funny, and often frustrating realities of love. Now, the beloved literary classic gets a fresh cinematic interpretation, bringing Austen’s signature wit, emotional depth, and unforgettable characters to a new generation.

Now showing exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas, the film offers more than a traditional period romance. At its heart is a story about two sisters discovering who they are, what they want, and how to hold on to each other when life takes an unexpected turn.

And as it turns out, Austen understood the complications of modern relationships long before dating apps and TikTok existed.

A 200-Year-Old Story That Still Feels Surprisingly Modern

When Jane Austen published Sense and Sensibility in 1811, she chose to remain anonymous, identifying herself on the novel’s title page simply as “By a Lady.”

It was a modest introduction for a writer whose sharp observations about love, social expectations, and human behavior would eventually make her one of literature’s most celebrated voices.

But beyond the elegant prose and romantic entanglements, Austen had another remarkable gift: she knew how to make people laugh at themselves.

That blend of intelligence, humor, and emotional honesty is precisely what inspired producer India Flint to revisit the classic.

    SS FP 00012 R 1 1

Interestingly, the idea began while Flint was reading Love & Virtue, the acclaimed 2021 debut novel by Australian author Diana Reid.

What struck me with Diana’s writing was her ability to capture a very specific kind of cultural moment, and her ability to capture the voice of her generation, Flint says

She immediately recognized a connection between Reid’s contemporary storytelling and Austen’s ability to capture the attitudes and contradictions of her own time.

Of course, this is also true for what we love about Austen. Diana’s about the same age as Austen was when she wrote the novel, and she’s not that different in age to the hero characters. I also knew that she was going to inject such a witty sense of humor.

The discovery eventually led to Reid taking on the screenplay, bringing a younger perspective to a story that has already captivated generations.

What Would Jane Austen Think of Modern Dating?

If there’s one thing Austen understood exceptionally well, it’s that matters of the heart rarely go according to plan.

Unspoken feelings, questionable romantic choices, mixed signals, and the occasional frustrating admirer are all familiar territory in Sense and Sensibility.

Sound like something straight out of your social media feed?

    SaS FP 00172 R

For screenwriter Diana Reid, that’s exactly the point.

Just because the labels have changed, doesn’t mean that people have,” Reid says. “Some of the heartbreak in the novel felt like the kind of thing that you would see someone complain about on TikTok.

It’s an amusing observation, but one that reveals why Austen remains so relevant. Centuries may separate her characters from today’s audiences, yet the emotions behind their decisions remain remarkably familiar.

And beneath all the social comedy is something surprisingly tender: the desire to find someone who truly understands you.

As Reid observes, much of Austen’s humor comes from the realization that people can be incredibly annoying. That only makes finding someone who shares your outlook on life feel even more extraordinary.

In other words, the real romance isn’t simply about falling in love. It’s about finding a person whose company makes the world feel a little less complicated.

    Watch the official trailer:

Meet the Dashwood Sisters: Two Hearts, Two Ways of Loving

Of course, no discussion of Sense and Sensibility would be complete without its two unforgettable heroines.

Following the death of their father, sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood find their lives upended by circumstances beyond their control. As they navigate an uncertain future, both encounter the joys, disappointments, and painful lessons that come with falling in love.

Yet despite sharing a home, a family, and a deep affection for each other, the sisters couldn’t be more different in how they approach matters of the heart.

Elinor is thoughtful, composed, and constantly aware of her responsibilities. She carefully considers the feelings of others, even when doing so means keeping her own desires hidden.

Marianne, meanwhile, is passionate, outspoken, and unapologetically romantic. She believes in expressing her feelings freely and pursuing love with everything she has.

For Reid, their differences are not about one sister being more emotional than the other.

    SaS FP 00247

They both are very intelligent and they’re both deeply empathetic, but it’s just a question of what they do with those emotions, Reid explains.

For Elinor, I always thought about it as a conflict between duty and desire—she’s always thinking about what other people want. Marianne is very sure of what she wants, and she pursues her desire ardently and without inhibition.

It’s a fascinating contrast because both approaches feel so human.

Who hasn’t struggled between saying what they truly feel and choosing what seems sensible? Or wondered whether protecting their heart might mean missing out on something wonderful?

Through Elinor and Marianne, Austen reminds us that neither reason nor passion holds all the answers.

The Film’s Greatest Love Story Might Not Be the Romance

While the Dashwood sisters experience their share of romantic excitement and heartbreak, director Georgia Oakley believes the most compelling relationship in Sense and Sensibility is the one they share with each other.

I was drawn to the relationship between the sisters, Oakley reveals.

For the director, Elinor and Marianne are more than contrasting personalities. They represent two opposing impulses that can exist within the same person: the desire to remain in control and the longing to surrender to one’s emotions.

They represent these two opposing forces that a lot of women have within themselves that are always at war, Oakley explains.

She also credits Austen’s understanding of gender and power dynamics, qualities that remain central to Reid’s adaptation.

What particularly fascinated Oakley was the idea that the story’s emotional center isn’t necessarily a conventional romantic relationship.

    SaS FP 00312 R

The fact that the central love story was between the two sisters—I think Austen was really writing about the two sides of herself that were often in disagreement with each other, and she splintered them out into these characters.

It’s a perspective that gives the familiar story added meaning.

After all, romantic relationships may come and go, but the bond between the Dashwood sisters survives disappointment, uncertainty, and the difficult process of growing up.

They disagree, make mistakes, and see the world differently. Yet when everything around them changes, they continue to find strength in each other.

And perhaps that’s the most beautiful kind of love story of all.

Rediscover the Wit, Romance, and Heart of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ at Ayala Malls Cinemas

With Diana Reid’s witty screenplay and Georgia Oakley’s character-driven vision, this adaptation of Sense and Sensibility invites audiences to see Jane Austen’s enduring classic from a fresh perspective.

It’s a story for anyone who has ever loved too deeply, kept their feelings to themselves, made a questionable romantic decision, or found comfort in someone who knows them better than anyone else.

For longtime Austen admirers, the film offers another opportunity to reconnect with beloved characters and familiar themes. For first-time viewers, it’s an introduction to a world where romance is wonderfully complicated, humor is delightfully sharp, and family remains a source of strength.

Because while the rules of courtship have certainly changed since Austen’s time, the search for love, belonging, and understanding remains as relatable as ever.

Experience Sense and Sensibility, now showing exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas, home to timeless classics, internationally acclaimed films, and exciting local and global releases.

Some stories are worth telling again. And when it comes to love, heartbreak, and the people who stand by us through it all, Sense and Sensibility proves that Jane Austen still knows exactly how to speak to our hearts.

  • “Clayface” Director James Watkins Reveals the ‘Dark Glee’ Behind Matt Hagen’s Superpowers, Now Showing in Cinemas

“Clayface” Director James Watkins Reveals the ‘Dark Glee’ Behind Matt Hagen’s Superpowers, Now Showing in Cinemas

For Clayface director James Watkins, an action sequence only works when it says something meaningful about the character at its center.

Rather than relying on spectacle for spectacle’s sake, Watkins wanted the action in Clayface to feel deeply connected to Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries, and his unusual journey from ambitious actor to dangerous shapeshifter.

It’s like love scenes; they’re boring when they’re two people naked in bed. They’re interesting when they inform character and who these people are,” says the filmmaker. It’s the same with action sequences. They have to be imbued with character.

According to the filmmaker, generic action can quickly lead to what he calls “stunt fatigue.”

Otherwise, anyone can do anything with enough resources and enough stunts. It becomes about people punching each other and I get ‘stunt fatigue.’ I can’t bear it when heroes in movies suddenly become Navy SEALs when they’re really ordinary people.

    Watch the trailer:

Matt Hagen’s Greatest Weapon Is Being an Actor

When developing Matt’s fighting style, Watkins and the stunt team kept returning to one essential fact: Matt is an actor.

It’s not that he suddenly has this incredible ability to fight – but what he does have is this ability to shift, so he can ambush people. And as a brilliant actor, his superpower has a superpower. So, it becomes about the evolution or discovery of his powers throughout the sequence.

That concept allowed the filmmakers to build action around Matt discovering his abilities in real time.

Stealth, deception, surprise. If someone punches him, and that punch happens to go through his face and the guy hits a wall, then he’s like, ‘Oh, wow!’

Instead of immediately understanding everything he can do, Matt learns alongside the audience. And, crucially, he begins having fun with it.

He’s learning as we’re learning, and there’s this dark glee when he’s learning it. That ‘dark glee’ was important to me. The playful tone. The ‘permission to enjoy.’

That enjoyment, however, also makes Matt’s eventual choices more unsettling.

When you are enjoying the ride with Matt, laughing with him, it makes it much more complicated when he crosses a line!

Matt Reeves Calls Clayface an Anti-Hero Horror Story

Producer Matt Reeves, director of 2022’s The Batman, sees Clayface as more than a traditional comic book origin film.

I think what’s exciting about this kind of origin story is this idea of doing an anti-hero horror story, Reeves says.

The film mixes several genres, including romance, horror, thriller, and revenge.

where you’re going through a journey with someone and you’re seeing them go into areas that are very… I mean, on top of being a combination of a romance and a sort of horror thriller, it’s also really a revenge story, says Reeves.

For Reeves, the tension comes from following a protagonist whose actions become increasingly difficult to defend.

So, to go on that journey where you’re on that razor’s edge – you know this person’s doing the wrong things but you’re digging into the psychology of it, along with the horror of his actions

He also praises Watkins for bringing that complicated emotional balance to the screen.

that’s a very exciting way to get into the Clayface story. And I think James Watkins did an incredible job with that.

How Clayface Became Part of the DCU

The idea for the film began taking shape after Reeves completed The Batman.

Although that film was not a Batman origin story, Reeves realized its early-career setting offered opportunities to explore the beginnings of Gotham City’s famous villains.

We began thinking it’d be really exciting to develop a bunch of stories that could be genre stories that related to the Rogues’ Gallery characters and explore their origins. And one of the things I got very excited about was the idea of looking for ways to do really cool, smaller horror films.

One direction immediately appealed to him: smaller-scale horror films centered on familiar DC characters.

Screenwriter Mike Flanagan then approached Reeves with a particular passion for Clayface, especially the version featured in the animated Batman series.

As development continued, the film evolved into what Reeves describes as a tragic love story with echoes of The Fly and a horror thriller.

After James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, Reeves and the team pitched them the project.

They loved it so much, they wanted to make it one of the DCU movies.

Naomie Ackie on Caitlyn Corr’s Dangerous Ambition

Naomie Ackie, who plays Dr. Caitlyn Corr, describes joining Clayface as a longtime dream fulfilled.

It’s genuinely a dream come true. I have wanted to be in a comic book film since I was like 11!

For Ackie, one of the most compelling elements is the connection between Caitlyn and Matt. Though one is a scientist and the other an actor, both crave recognition and accomplishment.

They are really hungry for acclaim, for being noticed for doing something that makes a difference, especially for Caitlyn.

That shared ambition ultimately creates a dangerous combination.

There’s a bit of a mad scientist about Caitlyn. It’s the similarity in their characters and their desperation to be seen and acknowledged that leads to ambition really getting the better of her.

    21122 6

Tom Rhys Harries Gets Under the Skin of a Shapeshifter

For Tom Rhys Harries, playing a character capable of becoming virtually anyone or anything presented an unusual acting challenge.

I was aware of Clayface as a character from watching the Batman cartoon series when I was younger, Harries says.

The question became how to find the human being underneath such extraordinary abilities.

When we meet Matt in this movie, he has no concept of Clayface. He’s just trying to maintain his life.

At the beginning of the story, Matt appears to have everything he wants, including an ideal career and lifestyle. Harries became interested in what drives that ambition and what might be hiding beneath it.

What I ended up thinking a lot about is the concept of running towards something or running away from something, he explains.

As Matt’s circumstances change, so do his priorities.

I think Matt realizes throughout the film what his priorities are, and what happens to him sort of clarifies certain things for him, which in turn drives him to do the things he does.

With horror, romance, revenge, dark comedy, and character-driven action all colliding, Clayface offers a twisted new look at one of Gotham City’s most distinctive villains.

Clayface is now showing in cinemas and is rated R-18. Distributed locally by Warner Bros. Pictures PH.

  • ‘Street Fighter’ Cast Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo and Jason Momoa Reveal Why the Movie Is a Must-Watch, Now Showing in Cinemas

‘Street Fighter’ Cast Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo and Jason Momoa Reveal Why the Movie Is a Must-Watch, Now Showing in Cinemas

Some games are simply meant to feel larger than life.

With Street Fighter, that means bone-crunching battles, unmistakable characters, explosive moves and a world that generations of players already know by heart. Now, the iconic fighting game is stepping into cinemas once again, this time with a cast and creative team determined to deliver something both longtime fans and first-time audiences can enjoy.

Led by Andrew Koji as Ryu and Noah Centineo as Ken, the new Street Fighter brings together an impressive ensemble that includes Jason Momoa as Blanka, WWE superstar Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i as Akuma and David Dastmalchian as Lord M. Bison.

    Watch the trailer:

For the actors and filmmakers behind the movie, however, this is more than another game adaptation. It is a chance to bring the energy, personality and spectacle of Street Fighter to the big screen in a way they believe audiences have not seen before.

Roman Reigns Says the Movie Builds a World Audiences Can Get Lost In

Stepping into the role of Akuma is Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i, whose commanding presence makes him a natural fit for one of the franchise’s most intimidating fighters.

For Anoa’i, one of the movie’s biggest strengths is the way it expands the world fans already love.

    SF FP 187K

We’ve done properly what hasn’t been done before – fleshing out a world that so many people of all ages know and love, he says.

There’s that escapism. You can leave everything behind and get lost in this universe, and we’ve put that on film. Audiences are going to immerse themselves in this world of Street Fighter.

It is that sense of scale and escapism that the cast repeatedly points to when talking about the movie. Rather than simply recreating familiar images from the games, the film aims to make audiences feel as though they have stepped directly into its universe.

Andrew Koji Wants Hardcore Fans and Newcomers to Feel Welcome

For Andrew Koji, taking on the role of Ryu came with a major responsibility.

The character is one of the most recognizable figures in gaming history, and Koji says the filmmakers were conscious of making a movie that could satisfy devoted players while remaining accessible to newcomers.

    SF FP 172K

We all wanted to make sure that not only can we get new fans to love it, but the hardcore fans too, says Andrew Koji, who plays Ryu. There are so many nods we put in there and we’re bringing a Street Fighter film that has never been done before and hopefully will be remembered for a long time to come.

That balance is crucial for a franchise with decades of history behind it. Fans know the moves, rivalries, costumes and personalities intimately, which means every detail matters.

At the same time, Street Fighter is aiming to introduce its colorful universe to audiences who may have never picked up the game.

Noah Centineo Says Street Fighter Should Be Seen Big

While Koji embodies the disciplined Ryu, Noah Centineo takes on the role of Ken, one of the franchise’s most popular and recognizable characters.

And if Centineo has one recommendation for audiences, it is simple: see the movie on the biggest screen possible.

It’s a huge movie. It is so visually stimulating that seeing that on a huge screen is the way to see it, he says.

    DSC0786R2

The fights are sweaty, and bloody, you want to see that huge, and the sound design – the seats are going to shake. Street Fighter is one of those movies that should be seen in an IMAX theater.

For a franchise built around spectacular combat, that theatrical scale makes sense.

Every punch, kick and special move is designed to land with maximum impact, while the movie’s sound design and visuals push the experience beyond what audiences can get from a smaller screen.

David Dastmalchian Promises Action, Comedy and Plenty of Surprises

David Dastmalchian, meanwhile, takes on the villainous role of Lord M. Bison.

Known for bringing intensity and unpredictability to his performances, Dastmalchian teases a movie that refuses to settle into just one tone.

The high-octane action and adventure, the fighting, the comedy, the brutal stuff that is going to just totally shock people, says the actor.

    MR 11542R

And the performances, the design. Street Fighter is going to feel like a roller coaster, and I can’t wait to see what people look like as the rollercoaster comes in for landing.

That combination of larger-than-life action and humor is an important part of the franchise’s appeal.

After all, Street Fighter has always thrived on contrast. Its fighters can be serious, eccentric, intimidating or wildly theatrical, sometimes all within the same match.

Bringing that spirit to a feature film means embracing both the spectacle and the fun.

Jason Momoa Calls Street Fighter Part of His Childhood

For Jason Momoa, the project is personal.

Momoa not only appears in the movie as Blanka, he also serves as a producer, giving him a role both in front of and behind the camera.

Street Fighter will make you laugh, and cry, and have a really great time, he says.

    SF FP 106K 0

This is my childhood. Street Fighter was everything growing up. For existing fans, and new fans, it’s such a diverse world and cast – there’s something for everyone in it.

That connection to the games is shared by several members of the team, helping give the adaptation a sense of genuine affection for the source material.

Momoa’s comments also point to the movie’s broader ambition. It is not only trying to reproduce familiar characters and moves. It wants audiences to become emotionally invested in them, too.

Director Kitao Sakurai Brings a Lifelong Fan’s Perspective

At the center of the production is director Kitao Sakurai, who grew up with the games himself.

For Sakurai, making Street Fighter carried both personal and cultural significance.

As a Japanese-American filmmaker, to have the honor to do Street Fighter makes me feel incredibly proud, he says

    MR 12240R 0

To be able to incorporate the feelings I had as a child, to be able to bring to life the aspects of the game that as a fan, you felt in your heart, is exactly what I hope the movie captures.

That emotional connection also shaped the film’s approach to authenticity.

According to Sakurai, the production paid close attention to the elements fans immediately associate with Street Fighter, from fighting styles and costumes to signature moves and character personalities.

We’re excited that this is the most accurate Street Fighter adaptation ever made, in terms of the fighting styles, the moves, the costumes and the tone and spirit of the characters, he says.

And I hope people go see it in IMAX or other premium exhibition formats, for the incredible visuals, and the soundtrack where these needle drops are immersive and banging.

A Street Fighter Movie Made for the Cinema

There is no shortage of pressure when adapting a game as beloved as Street Fighter.

Fans arrive with decades of memories, favorite characters and expectations. New audiences, meanwhile, need a reason to care about a world they may be experiencing for the first time.

The cast and filmmakers seem well aware of that challenge.

Their answer is to go bigger.

Bigger fights. Bigger personalities. Bigger visuals. Bigger sound.

And beneath all that spectacle is a clear affection for the franchise that inspired it.

Whether you grew up mastering combos at the arcade or are meeting Ryu, Ken, Blanka and Akuma for the first time, Street Fighter wants to offer the kind of energetic, crowd-pleasing experience that feels right at home in a packed cinema.

Street Fighter is now showing in cinemas nationwide, including IMAX. Distributed locally by Paramount Pictures PH.

  • ‘Forgotten Island’ Makes History With P97.2 Million Opening Weekend in the Philippines

‘Forgotten Island’ Makes History With P97.2 Million Opening Weekend in the Philippines

Filipino moviegoers have found their way to Forgotten Island.

DreamWorks Animation’s Filipino-inspired adventure debuted at No. 1 at the Philippine box office, earning P97,236,533 during its opening weekend. The impressive haul marks Universal Pictures’ biggest opening weekend in the country for 2026 and the biggest opening for a non-franchise animated film in the Philippines.

For a story rooted in friendship, Filipino culture, and the creatures many Filipinos grew up hearing about, the milestone makes its arrival on the big screen even sweeter.

    ForgottenIsland 2

And there is plenty of Pinoy talent helping bring the island of Nakali to life.

    Filipino Stories Take Center Stage

Forgotten Island follows lifelong best friends Raissa and Jo, voiced by Liza Soberano and H.E.R., as they reach a turning point in their friendship.

Having been inseparable since grade school, the two are preparing to head down different paths after high school graduation. But before they can say goodbye to this chapter of their lives, one final night together takes an unexpected turn.

They stumble upon a mysterious portal and are transported to Nakali, a fantastical island filled with magical beings and creatures inspired by the stories they heard growing up in Filipino families.

Some of the island’s inhabitants are friendly. Others definitely are not.

    ForgottenIsland 3

Among the dangers waiting for them is the fearsome Dreaded Manananggal, voiced by Tony Award-winning Filipino icon Lea Salonga.

As if being stranded on a mysterious island were not enough, Raissa and Jo soon discover that their memories are disappearing.

Suddenly, their adventure becomes something much more personal.

If they cannot find their way home, they risk losing the memories of the friendship that has defined much of their lives. Worse, escaping Nakali may come with a price neither of them is ready to pay.

    A Pinoy-Powered Cast and Soundtrack

Adding to the film’s distinctly Filipino spirit is a stacked voice cast featuring Filipino and Filipino-American stars.

Alongside Soberano, H.E.R., and Salonga are Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, and Jo Koy.

The larger ensemble includes Dave Franco as the well-meaning but hapless weredog Raww, Emmy nominee Jenny Slate, and Emmy winner Ronny Chieng.

The Filipino representation does not stop with the cast.

    1 7 1

Homegrown music acts BINI and SB19 are also among the artists featured on the film’s soundtrack, adding another Pinoy connection to the DreamWorks Animation original.

Critics and Audiences Are Feeling the Magic

The movie’s strong Philippine debut arrives alongside an enthusiastic response from moviegoers and critics.

Forgotten Island received a 95% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while its audience score stands at 97%.

Behind the film is the creative team responsible for one of DreamWorks Animation’s acclaimed recent adventures.

Forgotten Island is written and directed by Academy Award nominee Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado and produced by Academy Award nominee Mark Swift, the filmmaking team behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

DreamWorks Animation is, of course, no stranger to stories about unforgettable friendships. The studio has given audiences the unlikely partnership of Shrek and Donkey in Shrek, the bond between Hiccup and Toothless in How to Train Your Dragon, and the touching relationship at the center of The Wild Robot.

This time, the friendship worth fighting for belongs to two young women standing at the uncertain point between growing up together and growing apart.

    Watch the trailer here:

    Welcome to Nakali

Fantasy may send Raissa and Jo into another world, but there is something wonderfully familiar at the heart of Forgotten Island.

It is about reaching that moment when life begins pulling two friends in different directions. It is about the memories that turn a friendship into something irreplaceable. And, wrapped around that emotional story, it is a colorful adventure filled with creatures inspired by Filipino mythology.

Now, with P97.2 million at the Philippine box office during its opening weekend, audiences have given the film another milestone to celebrate.

But there is a frightening twist.

When an evil force comes after her, Gemma discovers that she does not simply have the ability to enter The Further. She can also bring what lives there back into the real world.

James Wan on the lasting appeal of horror

For producer James Wan, horror continues to resonate with audiences because the genre can explore familiar fears, social issues, and universal experiences while still delivering suspense and scares.

The reason a lot of filmmakers really love playing in this particular playground is that horror allows us to say a lot of things we can’t otherwise say with other films, Wan says.

We can make social commentary on the world, talk about the political climate. We can disguise it as a metaphor, an analogy. But people aren’t offended by it because at the end of the day it’s a scary movie – it’s supposed to confront you and offend you.

Wan’s comments reflect how horror can work on several levels. Beyond its frightening imagery and supernatural elements, the genre can give filmmakers an opportunity to tackle themes that audiences recognize from real life.

Jason Blum praises director Jacob Chase’s personal approach

Producer Jason Blum also highlighted director Jacob Chase and the personal perspective he brought to the new film.

“Insidious’ keeps going because every few years a filmmaker walks in with a reason to make it personal, not just a reason to make it scary, Blum says.

Jacob had that from the first meeting. Once I heard his take, the only job left was to get out of his way and let him build it.

That personal approach has helped keep the long-running franchise fresh while maintaining the eerie atmosphere and supernatural tension that fans have come to expect from the “Insidious” films.

Critics Hail “The End of Oak Street” as a Crowd-Pleasing Dinosaur Adventure, Now Showing in Cinemas

Dinosaurs are taking over suburbia in “The End of Oak Street,” and critics are loving the chaos.

Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the filmmaker behind “It Follows,” the new sci-fi adventure is earning praise for its sharp direction, nostalgic atmosphere, energetic performances, and crowd-ready thrills. Reviews have described the movie as everything from a callback to classic sci-fi adventures to one of the most entertaining dinosaur films in decades.

    NBR T1 0019 proxy

Now showing in cinemas, “The End of Oak Street” stars Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery as a family suddenly thrown into a terrifying world where survival means staying together.

    A Big-Screen Adventure Built for a Crowd

Collider praised the movie as a fun and confident throwback, highlighting Mitchell’s direction and Hathaway’s performance.

It’s 90 minutes of edge-of-your-seat entertainment that commits to its concept and entertains throughout,” they wrote. “Big, loud, and guaranteed to make you jump at least once, it’s another eye-catching performance from the always-busy Hathaway, and proof that blockbuster entertainment doesn’t need to follow a franchise formula.

That sense of old-school spectacle runs throughout the film, which blends sci-fi mystery, family drama, and dinosaur mayhem into one fast-paced adventure.

Set against an ’80s suburban backdrop, the story follows the Platt family after a mysterious cosmic event tears Oak Street away from the familiar world and transports the entire neighborhood somewhere unknown.

With their surroundings transformed and danger lurking around every corner, the family quickly realizes that staying united may be their best chance of making it out alive.

Critics Feel the ’80s Movie Magic

For IndieWire, “The End of Oak Street” captures the spirit of the kind of adventurous, slightly mischievous movies that defined an era.

The publication compared its tone to beloved Amblin Entertainment classics, including “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Poltergeist,” and “Back to the Future.”

IndieWire felt they were truly back in the ’80s, a time when Amblin Entertainment (founded by Steven Spielberg) released many of their now beloved classics, including “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Poltergeist” and “Back to the Future.” “A crowd-pleasing but winkingly mean-spirited Amblin homage that perfectly captures the sweet menace of movies like ‘Gremlins’ and ‘The Goonies’ (so perfectly, in fact, that it almost feels like you’ve been sucked through a hole in space-time yourself), ‘The End of Oak Street’ is what multiplexes have been missing from recent summers,” they wrote. “Lean, clever, original, cheer-at-the-screen entertainment that will traumatize 10-year-olds for life and make their parents feel like they’re kids again.”

For JoBlo.com, “The End of Oak Street” is the best dinosaur movie since the ’90s, when dinosaurs first became a massive movie phenomenon.

ComingSoon.net wrote that the film is “an extremely entertaining popcorn movie that feels designed to be experienced with a packed theater, complete with jump scares, big thrills, audience screams, and plenty of moments that practically beg you to shout at the screen.”

In other words, this is the kind of movie that gets even more fun when the cinema is full.

David Robert Mitchell’s Dinosaur Dream Comes to Life

For Mitchell, making a dinosaur movie has been a lifelong ambition.

My dad was obsessed with dinosaurs, he had always dreamed of being a paleontologist and was always reading dinosaur books. So, I grew up around it, shares the filmmaker.

Although the fascination was always there, Mitchell wanted to find a concept that felt personal and different from other dinosaur films.

The idea eventually came to him during an ordinary walk through his neighborhood.

I fell in love with the idea of doing it, but I didn’t know what would be my version of a dinosaur film. Then a few years ago I was walking through my neighborhood, just a casual stroll, and I was passing by this really interesting house and this alleyway. And I just imagined that there was a dinosaur there digging through the trash. I just could see it, and I stopped and I looked at this interesting tableau of this fantastical thing in this mundane place in a middle-class neighborhood. And I thought, I want to write something that feels like this. I want to make a movie that feels like this image in my mind.

NBR 14973 High Res JPEG custom proxy 1

That contrast between the everyday and the extraordinary became one of the defining ideas behind “The End of Oak Street.”

J.J. Abrams Teases Terrifying Dinosaur Encounters

Producer J.J. Abrams, known for “Super 8” and “Lost,” believes the film contains sequences audiences will remember long after the credits roll.

There are amazing sequences in “The End of Oak Street.” “One in particular I think could be a classic terror scene,” he shares.

For Abrams, much of the movie’s appeal comes from placing enormous prehistoric creatures in an environment audiences instantly recognize.

But I think the big takeaway is the thrill of seeing dinosaurs in a suburban setting. The contrast of these wild creatures in an absolutely mundane neighborhood is spectacular.

It is an unusual combination, but that familiarity also makes the film’s larger-than-life premise feel surprisingly close to home.

“The insane story becomes far more relatable than you might expect,” Abrams adds.

The film is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and opens in theaters and IMAX in North America on August 14, 2026, with its international rollout beginning August 12, 2026.

With critics praising its nostalgic charm, thrilling set pieces, clever concept, and crowd-pleasing energy, “The End of Oak Street” is shaping up to be one of those movies best enjoyed with an audience.
