Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim Capture Elizabeth Holmes’ Final Days of Freedom in ‘You Can See Everything’

What happens when one of Silicon Valley’s most controversial figures finally breaks her silence? In You Can See Everything, filmmakers Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim offer a fascinating look into the private world of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, documenting an extraordinary chapter of her life just weeks before she enters prison.

Arriving in Philippine cinemas on November 18, the documentary promises a gripping glimpse into a story filled with ambition, deception, family, and unexpected revelations.

From Silicon Valley Superstar to Convicted Entrepreneur

Once celebrated as the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire at just 30, Elizabeth Holmes seemed unstoppable.

After dropping out of Stanford University, she founded Theranos, a healthcare startup that promised to revolutionize blood testing. Her bold claim? The company could perform hundreds of medical tests using just a few drops of blood.

It was an irresistible vision that attracted powerful investors, generated massive media attention, and turned Holmes into a Silicon Valley sensation.

    But everything changed in 2015.

A bombshell Wall Street Journal investigation exposed serious problems with Theranos’ technology and business practices, setting off a chain of events that ultimately brought the company down.

Holmes and former Theranos COO Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani were later indicted on federal wire fraud and conspiracy charges.

In 2022, Holmes was convicted on four counts related to defrauding investors, while being acquitted of charges involving patients.

Yet behind the courtroom headlines, another chapter of her life was unfolding.

A New Relationship Amid the Controversy

As her legal troubles intensified, Holmes began a relationship with entrepreneur Billy Evans in 2017.

The couple went on to welcome two children as Holmes faced an increasingly uncertain future.

Then, with her prison sentence approaching, something unexpected happened.

After years of avoiding the spotlight, Holmes agreed to let cameras into her home.

And the filmmakers behind those cameras? Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim.

How an Unexpected Meeting Sparked You Can See Everything

The project began with a surprising tip during a night out with friends.

Oppenheim learned that Holmes and Evans were reportedly interested in documenting their lives and had approached entertainment company A24.

    Naturally, the filmmakers were intrigued.

I wonder if we could meet them?, Fielder recalled asking.

Soon, the duo found themselves inside Holmes and Evans’ oceanfront home, sitting across from a woman whose rise and fall had fascinated the world.

For Fielder, the initial motivation was simple curiosity.

My interest at first was just my own personal curiosity,” says Fielder. “It wasn’t even that I saw a project there. I had just read a lot about her, and I wanted to know what she was interested in saying after being silent for so many years.

But the meeting took an unexpected turn.

But the experience of meeting her was so odd. After that I was like, there’s something bigger here, Fielder revealed.

Suddenly, what started as a personal curiosity had the potential to become something far more compelling.

Why Did Elizabeth Holmes Finally Open Her Doors?

One question continued to trouble both filmmakers: Why now?

Holmes had largely avoided speaking to the media since 2016. So why would she suddenly invite two filmmakers into her private life just before incarceration?

Why would you be opening your doors after years of not speaking publicly? Why would you be opening your doors to us? It didn’t make a lot of sense, says Oppenheim.

    Fielder was equally skeptical.

Is she looking for someone to craft her redemption story? Do they want promotion for some new endeavor? Does she have another agenda?

Rather than jumping to conclusions, the directors decided to follow the story wherever it led.

So I said, ‘Okay, let me talk to her. I’ll go, I’ll listen.’ But what ended up emerging was so much stranger than I would have predicted, adds Fielder.

Seven Crew Members, Total Creative Freedom, and One Unpredictable Story

With complete creative freedom, Fielder and Oppenheim assembled a small team of seven and secretly began filming You Can See Everything.

Their cameras captured Holmes during an intensely personal period, as she prepared to leave her family and begin serving her prison sentence.

What unfolded was far from an ordinary documentary production.

As the filmmakers spent time inside Holmes’ world, their project developed into a story filled with unexpected developments and questions about public perception, personal narratives, and the complicated reality behind one of Silicon Valley’s biggest scandals.

Just how much can a camera reveal about someone whose life has already been scrutinized by millions?

That’s one of the intriguing questions at the heart of You Can See Everything.
