Why The Running Man is the Action-Thriller You Can’t Miss This November

Lights. Camera. Mayhem. The Running Man is racing into Philippine cinemas on November 12, and it’s not just another remake—it’s a bold, bloody, and brilliant reimagining of Stephen King’s high-stakes survival story. With an all-star cast, a visionary director, and a chillingly familiar world, this movie has everything you want in an edge-of-your-seat blockbuster.

Here are the top reasons you’ll want to book your tickets early.

It’s Based on a Stephen King Novel—Yes, THAT One

Published in 1982 under King’s pen name Richard Bachman, The Running Man imagines a dystopian future where a crumbling America turns its desperation into deadly entertainment. Set in a brutal, media-obsessed 2025, the film follows Ben Richards (played by Glen Powell), a working-class father forced to enter a horrifying game show where contestants—called “Runners”—are hunted by assassins on live TV.

With every passing day, the cash prize grows. So does the body count. But Ben isn’t just running for money—he’s running for his daughter, his dignity, and the truth.

And yes—Stephen King himself co-executive produces the film.

Edgar Wright Brings His Signature Style—and the King’s Blessing

When it comes to directors with flair, Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) is in a league of his own. For The Running Man, Wright teamed up with co-writer Michael Bacall to stay truer to King’s novel than the 1987 Schwarzenegger version.

At the recent New York Comic Con, Wright joked that filming a faithful movie adaptation to The Running Man, where main protagonist Ben Richards plays the world’s deadliest game of hide-and-seek, running from city to city to escape his hunters, was exhausting. “But I’m proud of it,” he said. “It’s an expansive movie that was ambitious.”

Even better? Stephen King gave the film his personal stamp of approval. ‘It’s more faithful to the book to keep the fans happy, but different enough to keep me on my toes and excited.’”

    Talk about a glowing review.

    Watch the Trailer Here:

Glen Powell Is Your New Favorite Action Hero

Glen Powell may have flown high in Top Gun: Maverick, but here, he’s in full beast mode. As Ben Richards, Powell is gritty, grounded, and surprisingly funny. He’s angry, sure—but also deeply human. The kind of hero you can root for, not just watch.

And when it comes to running? Powell had a little help from the best.

““I will say that all of my running technique did come straight from Tom [Cruise],” he shared at CinemaCon, recalling training with his Top Gun co-star. Add to that his stint with the all-star cast of The Expendables 3, and you’ve got an action star forged by legends.

    The Villains? Deliciously Evil

What’s a great hero without some unforgettable villains?

Josh Brolin leads the dark side as Dan Killian, a charismatic TV executive who manipulates Richards into playing the game. Colman Domingo oozes showmanship as Bobby Thompson, the over-the-top host who turns murder into ratings gold. And Lee Pace? Absolutely chilling as McCone, the masked hunter who’s always a step ahead.

    Surprise Stars Steal the Scene

Look out for two scene-stealing cameos from Michael Cera and William H. Macy. They may not be on screen for long, but their roles are vital to Ben’s journey—and may just become instant fan favorites. (Bonus: Cera reunites with Edgar Wright from Scott Pilgrim, bringing a fun easter egg for longtime fans.)

A World That’s Eerily Close to Home

The movie’s setting is technically futuristic, but it feels disturbingly now. Think: media spectacles, corporate greed, and a society obsessed with watching others fall. Wright describes it as “retro-futuristic”—like the 1980s imagined the future, and then it happened anyway.

From neon-drenched cities to high-stakes chases through broken streets, the world-building is both fascinating and terrifyingly real.

Buckle Up! Glen Powell Promises Non-stop Action in “The Running Man,” in Cinemas November 12

“We’re really breaking out the heavy artillery, the big explosions,” Glen Powell says in the new “Behind the Action” featurette for his upcoming movie, The Running Man, opening only in cinemas November 12. “Hopefully I’ll make the stunts look cool. This is going to be fun.”

Watch the “Behind the Action” Featurette Here:

The Story: A Game of Survival in a Society Obsessed with Spectacle

Directed by Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Shaun of the Dead), The Running Man is set in a near-future world where the highest-rated television show is a brutal contest called The Running Man. Contestants, known as Runners, must evade professional assassins for 30 days to win a growing cash prize. Every second of their lives is televised, with the bloodthirsty public tuning in for entertainment.

Glen Powell stars as Ben Richards, a working-class father who joins the deadly competition as a last resort to afford treatment for his sick daughter. But what starts as desperation becomes defiance. As Ben navigates explosive encounters and intense showdowns, his grit and instincts earn him an unexpected fan base. Now a threat to the very system that created the show, Ben must survive not just the Hunters—but a society obsessed with watching him fall.

Josh Brolin co-stars as the show’s cunning producer Dan Killian, joined by a stellar cast including Colman Domingo, William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, Emilia Jones, Daniel Ezra, Jayme Lawson, Sean Hayes, and Katy O’Brian.

Behind the Stunts and Training: Powell Pushes the Limits

The film’s action-packed momentum is matched only by Glen Powell’s physical preparation. As seen in the “Behind the Training” featurette, Powell endured intense stunt rehearsals and tactical conditioning to bring Ben Richards to life. Every chase, crash, and confrontation was designed with practical effects and real-world intensity.

Tom Cruise, Powell’s Top Gun: Maverick co-star, even offered advice during prep: “You don’t look as cool as you think,” Cruise warned about on-screen running—a tip Powell took to heart.

Director Edgar Wright’s adaptation stays closer to Stephen King’s original novel than the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger version. The result is a darker, grittier film that blends fast-paced spectacle with a chilling social critique of media and mass entertainment.

See How Glen Powell Trained for the Role:

    Production Notes and Cinematic Scale

Principal photography began in November 2024 in the United Kingdom, including high-profile location shoots such as Wembley Stadium. Filming wrapped in March 2025, with early footage screened at CinemaCon showcasing large-scale set pieces and relentless action.

Wright’s signature kinetic style is on full display—explosions, immersive chases, and tension-filled moments shot with precision. The production team brought together top-tier talent behind the scenes to ensure every sequence delivered both visually and emotionally.

Glen Powell Takes the Lead as Storm-Chasing Cowboy Tyler Owens in “Twisters”

Glen Powell, known for his magnetic performances, is set to captivate audiences once again in the disaster thriller “Twisters,” directed by Lee Isaac Chung. Powell’s journey into this high-octane film began during his collaboration with Joseph Kosinski on “Top Gun: Maverick,” where he first learned about “Twisters.” Intrigued by the vibrant characters and intense action sequences, Powell kept a close eye on the project.

    The Call to Adventure

While filming “Anyone But You” in Australia, Powell received a pivotal call. “I was asked if I’d be interested in ‘Twisters’ and if I would be open to doing a chemistry read with Daisy, who was already cast,” Powell recalls. This opportunity was a dream come true for the actor, who was eager to dive into the world of tornado chasing.

    Perfect Casting

Director Lee Isaac Chung believes Powell is the ideal choice for the role of Tyler Owens, a charming rodeo star-turned-viral storm chaser. “Glen is so charismatic, interesting, and funny, you end up loving him even when he’s playing characters like Tyler who are cocky and big showboats,” Chung says. “He’s also an extraordinary actor with great depth, effortlessly revealing layers of his character without forcing it.”

    A Personal Connection

An appearance on the morning show “Today” showcased a different side of Powell that resonated with Chung. “Seeing Glen with his parents, talking about their impact on his life, I saw a layer of him that I wanted for this character—someone with real heart,” Chung explains. This genuine warmth and depth made Powell the perfect fit for Tyler Owens.

    Honoring a Legacy

Powell also drew inspiration from the late Bill Paxton, star of the original “Twister.” Reflecting on their time together during the filming of the 2013 western “Red Wing,” Powell shares, “Bill helped me understand what it takes to make characters like Tyler feel grounded and real, but also cool and fun. I thought about Bill Paxton often while making ‘Twisters.’ It’s an impossible task to follow in his footsteps, but I hope people can see a little bit of his light emanating through the movie.”

    Building the Character

Powell meticulously crafted his portrayal of Tyler Owens, aiming to reveal the character’s true depth. “I wanted to start with my character presenting as exactly the guy you think he is—this self-promoting adrenaline junkie,” Powell explains. “But then you realize there’s real depth to him. His team of storm chasers might seem like a traveling circus of thrill seekers, but they share a complicated fascination with tornadoes and a deep respect for their power. They’re a band of misfits who have grown into a family that works together and cares for each other.”

    Storming Cinemas Soon

Get ready for heart-racing action as “Twisters” storms across Philippine cinemas on July 17. Join Glen Powell and an incredible cast as they navigate the thrilling, unpredictable world of tornadoes, bringing both excitement and depth to the screen.

  • Director Will Gluck, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell talk about the magic of working together in “Anyone But You”

For director Will Gluck, Anyone But You was a chance to make a romantic comedy that was as funny as any in recent memory. “Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are simply two of the funniest people I’ve ever worked with,” says Gluck. “You put them on the big screen together, and magic happens.”

In Anyone But You, Sweeney (Euphoria) and Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) play romantic enemies Bea and Ben, respectively, who have to put aside their personal vendettas and pretend to be a head-over-heels couple in order to keep the peace at Bea’s sister’s wedding. The film also stars Alexandra Shipp, Darren Barnet, Hadley Robinson, Dermot Mulroney, Rachel Griffiths, Michelle Hurd, Bryan Brown and GaTa.

“As much as Bea hates Ben, and vice versa, it’s important to Bea not to wreck her sister’s wedding. So, she hatches her plan: these two people who actually hate each other will pretend to like each other,” says Sweeney. “But as she and Ben are drawn together, they start to actually love each other, but can’t admit it to themselves.”

Of course, it’s not long before they get in over their heads. “Sometimes, I wonder if Will was just rubbing his hands together, thinking about all of the messed-up situations and crazy stuff he could make Glen and me do,” Sweeney continues. “On the other hand, it was all incredibly funny. So we did it. You’re welcome, Will.”

    ABY 000077750008

“I am really excited for the world to see Sydney in this movie,” says Powell. “She’s obviously proven herself to be a powerhouse dramatic actress, but being the female lead in a romantic comedy is not an easy task. You are the audience surrogate so the world has to really root for you to fall in love. There is something vulnerable and honest about Sydney that makes this movie come to life. Without that current of humanity running through this genre, it would fall flat. But this movie sings (literally and figuratively) because Sydney can stand in front of a camera and offer up her heart in a way that feels heroic.”

Sweeney has nothing but great things to say about her costar as well. “Glen is handsome, charming, funny, talented, and thoughtful. He’s also an incredibly loyal friend and a true pro,” says the actress. “That’s everything you could possibly ask for from an acting partner playing your fake boyfriend.”

Sweeney, who is also the film’s executive producer, gives credit to the movie’s writers for making it relatable for audiences. “You see it all the time – people are so afraid of being vulnerable, of opening themselves up to another person, that they sabotage the best relationships they’ve ever had,” says Sweeney. “Bea and Ben have a connection that is so real, deep, and immediate that they are going to do everything they can to deny it – until they can’t anymore.”

Anyone But You opens in cinemas January 17.

  • Miles Teller, Glen Powell at the Top of Their Game in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Miles Teller and Glen Powell break from the pack as navy fighter pilots Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw and Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin in Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick, now playing cinemas across the Philippines.

    Miles Teller

In the 1986 Top Gun, a training accident killed Goose (Anthony Edwards), one of the most adored characters in movie history, the father of the young boy we will now meet as a man. “And I’ve got to say,” says lead star Tom Cruise of Teller’s performance as Rooster, “that guy showed up.”

Miles Teller, Glen Powell at the Top of Their Game in 'Top Gun: Maverick'

There aren’t many men who could step into Goose’s shoes. Then again, Miles Teller isn’t just anyone. “I feel fortunate to carry on the Bradshaw name,” the acclaimed young star says of his beloved on-screen old man.

Going toe to toe with Cruise is a tantalizing prospect for Teller. Two actors at the peak of their powers with three decades of water under the bridge and old scores to settle. “My character, Bradley [aka Rooster], when the first movie came out, he was just a little kid,” says Teller. “And now, of course, you’re seeing him over 30 years later, so there were a lot of blanks to fill in.” And even though that meant some incredibly heavy emotional lifting at incredibly high speeds and heights, for Teller, he wouldn’t have had his time on Top Gun: Maverick any other way. “They knew how much pressure there was on what we were trying to accomplish,” he says of shooting sequences the likes of which audiences have never seen. “But we all knew that we were trying to make something really special, and that doesn’t come easy.”

    Glen Powell

From topless montages to landing his own pilot’s license, no-one has embraced the joys of Top Gun more than Glen Powell. “This,” he says, “was sort of written in the stars.”

Powell was born in 1988, two years after the original Top Gun was released. But the adventures of Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell have always captivated him, to the point that he has modelled his own entire professional arc after that of its leading man. “I’ve studied Tom’s early work to navigate my own career,” Powell says. “And now that we’re friends, I don’t have to make assumptions on WWTCD (What Would Tom Cruise Do.) As a young actor in a business where everyone says the movie star is dead… I’ve been fortunate enough to work alongside a guy who has been able to prove that theory wrong for three or four decades running.”

Miles Teller, Glen Powell at the Top of Their Game in 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Famously pipped at the post to the role of Rooster in the movie, after Miles Teller landed the role of Goose’s son, Cruise was determined to keep Powell in the picture, working with him to create the brand-new role of Hangman. “[Tom would] say, ‘I’ve had this idea… Watch this movie and we’ll talk about it tomorrow.’ So, I started watching movies the way Tom watches movies,” says Powell. “It wasn’t just getting to work with my hero but getting to truly collaborate with my hero.” If that wasn’t enough, the star of everything from Everybody Wants Some!! to Scream Queens also came away from this movie with a bonus: his own private pilot’s license.

“At any given moment, the full wrath of aeronautical physics is trying to pull the blood from your head and black you out,” Powell says of shooting Top Gun: Maverick’s aerial scenes. “I will never take acting on the surface of the Earth for granted again.”
