In recognition of the outstanding contribution of local artists, filmmakers, and institutions to Philippine cinema and the cultural identity of Filipinos, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) held the first-ever annual awards event “Parangal ng Sining” on April 23 at Seda Hotel, Quezon City.
Through “Parangal ng Sining” (Honor of the Arts), the FDCP aims to give honor and respect to Filipino creatives and stakeholders for championing the Philippine film industry and gaining widespread acclaim for their respective works.
Filipina actress Dolly De Leon received critical acclaim for her breakthrough performance in the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme D’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness” and became the first Filipina actress to receive nominations from the Golden Globe Awards and the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA). For her significant contribution to world cinema and invaluable representation of the Filipino identity, De Leon was given the Gawad Lente: Annual Achievement Award by the FDCP for this year’s Parangal ng Sining.
Another recipient of the Annual Achievement Award is veteran actor Soliman Cruz, whose extensive filmography in the Philippine entertainment industry made him one of the most prolific and respected actors in the country. His lead role in the Romanian film “To The North” premiered at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, where it received standing ovations from the audience and won the Premio Bisato D’Oro 2022.
Filmmaker Martika Escobar is the first Filipino director to be awarded with the Special Jury Prize for Innovative Spirit at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival for her debut feature-length film “Leonor Will Never Die.” The FDCP honored her with the Annual Achievement Award for her experimental and world-class storytelling, as well as her homage for Philippine cinema in the aforementioned film.
Moreover, the FDCP honored those who have dedicated their lives to the growth and development of Philippine cinema with Gawad Lente: Lifetime Achievement Award, given to Ms. Vilma Santos, Mr. Nick Deocampo, Ms. Lily Yu Monteverde, and Cinemalaya.
Vilma Santos-Recto, widely known as the Star For All Seasons, has made significant contributions to the local entertainment industry with her numerous and often memorable roles in Filipino films and television shows. For the longevity of her career as a distinguished actress and the lasting impact of her roles on Filipino audiences, she was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the FDCP.
The FDCP also honored Lily Yu Monteverde, represented by her daughter and Regal Entertainment’s Vice President Roselle Monteverde at the ceremony, with the Lifetime Achievement Award for fostering the growth of Philippine mainstream cinema and producing well-loved Filipino blockbuster films such as the “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” movie franchise. Widely known as Mother Lily, she has continuously given opportunities for homegrown talents to thrive in the entertainment industry and contribute to the legacy of Philippine cinema.
Film historian Nick Deocampo is an advocate for preserving and restoring Filipino films, and his substantial research on Philippine cinema emphasized the importance of remembering our cinematic history. The FDCP has chosen him as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for his scholarly study of Filipino films to raise awareness and appreciation of our cinematic past for future generations of Filipinos. He was represented by his nephew Teddy Tan, Jr. at the awarding ceremony.
Lastly, the Cinemalaya Foundation was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for championing Filipino independent filmmakers and providing them with a significant platform to showcase their films at the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. Cinemalaya continues to foster Filipino filmmakers’ artistry and proves that local independent films can reach diverse audiences without compromising their creative freedom and distinct Filipino identity.
Hosted by TV personality Robi Domingo and graced with performances from notable Filipino singers Jason Dy, Ana Feleo, Roselle Nava, and musical group 92AD, “Parangal ng Sining” is an initiative of the FDCP to gather Filipino artists and stakeholders for the celebration of Philippine cinema. It aims to recognize the meaningful role of cinema in preserving and fostering Filipinos’ collective identity and cultural heritage.
Student filmmakers from West Visayas State University (WVSU) screened their cinematic works for free at Cinematheque Centres nationwide last March 18 as part of Academedia and official launch of other academic programs of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).
WVSU students, or Taga-West, got to show their short films and documentaries, namely “Judith” by Daniel de la Cruz, “Kinatao” by Lovely Jaro, “To Those We Loved the Most” by Leander Hofileña and Chelsea Young, “Modyul, Modyul Lang” by Maria JC Emmanuelle Momblan, “What If?” by Hofileña and Aimee Barte, “Panakayon” by Francis Cabinos, and “Sa Likod Sang Lense” by John Angelo Arroyo and Mars Dela Cruz, at Cinematheque Centre Manila, Iloilo, Negros, Nabunturan, and Davao.
In “Judith,” a broadcasting student realizes the dangers of the pandemic as realities of life unfold.
“Kinatao” tackles the story of a student struggling to adapt to her online classes. A nursing sophomore goes through a life-changing experience when she literally finds herself between her neighbor’s legs.
Meanwhile, in “To Those We Loved the Most,” a working student is bent on doing his best as he struggles to manage his time between his job and his studies. Only his younger sister is left in his family.
“Modyul, Modyul Lang” is a documentary film about the realities faced by grade school pupils in public schools because of the pandemic.
“What If?” starts with a spark of curiosity as two young and ambitious minds meet and feel an instant connection, eager to explore the mysteries of life and constantly searching for the “what ifs” that can lead to new relationships and infinite possibilities.
“Panakayon” focuses on the journey of a multifaceted Taga-West bracing his way to success.
Finally, “Sa Likod Sang Lense” centers on the life of a woman as she tries to reach for her goal, follow the footsteps of her friends, and have a better future in the media industry.
The films won at the recently concluded University Days Short Filmmaking Competition 2023 at WVSU.
Members of the WVSU Film Society and Sinemaskom, led by their adviser Prof. Kareen Gancio, attended the event at Cinematheque Centre Iloilo.
Academedia, formerly known as UFlix, provides an exhibition platform for the works of student filmmakers to support and encourage them to pursue their passion for filmmaking. This month, the FDCP featured student films from WVSU and De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde.
In between the two sets of screenings for Academedia, two other programs, namely the Academic Film Society and the Student Film Assistance Program (SFAP), were launched through a forum led by FDCP Chair and Chief Executive Officer Tirso Cruz III, executive director Dan Morales, technical consultant Jose Javier “Direk Joey” Reyes, and program officer Mark John Pamintuan.
The FDCP, through the SFAP, will open 25 slots per cycle to Filipino student filmmakers enrolled in academic institutions that will register to be part of the AFS. Successful applicants may receive up to 50,000 pesos worth of cash grants to help them produce their thesis films and capstone projects.
With the goal to bring world cinema and make critically-acclaimed titles even more accessible to Filipino audiences, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) has licensed the rights to four new titles from Belgium, Austria, Cambodia, and United Kingdom.
Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun” (2022) tells the story of Sophie as she reflects on the joy and melancholy of a holiday she took with her father 20 years earlier. The film took home the French Touch Prize of the Critics’ Week Jury at the 75th Cannes International Film Festival.
Another Cannes-winning title FDCP acquired is Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage” (2022) which depicts the life of Empress Elizabeth of Austria, told on a fictional account. The film won the Cannes Un Certain Regard Section’s Best Performance Award for Vicky Krieps’ portrayal of Empress Elizabeth. It also had its PH premiere during the 10th QCinema International Film Festival.
Davy Chou’s “Return to Seoul” follows the life of a 25-year-old French woman as she returns to her birthplace, South Korea, after being adopted to a French family. She then decides to track down her biological parents but her journey takes a surprising turn. Chou’s film won international acclaim in various film festivals like Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Athens International Film Festival, and Belfast Film Festival among others. Likewise, it also had its PH Premiere during the 10th QCinema International Film Festival and bagged the Jury Prize award.
Finally, 75th Cannes International Film Festival Grand Prix Prize Winner “Close” (2022) directed by Lukas Dhont depicts the lives of 13-year-olds Leo and Remi as they slowly drift apart after their relationship is questioned by their schoolmates. Dhont’s film also got the nod of the Academy Awards when it got nominated for the Best International Feature category.
More than its aim to encourage audiences to return to the cinemas, FDCP, through its Audience Development Program, aims to further expose moviegoers to titles that would help them expand their horizons.
The screening of these films will be held in select theatres nationwide and the FDCP’s very own Cinematheque Centres in Manila, Nabunturan, Davao, Iloilo, and Negros.

In line with its goal to bring world cinema to the Philippines, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is set to screen Cannes Film Festival official selection titles in the QCinema International Film Festival from November 18 to 25.
Fresh from this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Return to Seoul by Davy Chou and Corsage by Marie Kreutzer, both from the Un Certain Regard section, will be part of the 10th year edition of QCinema under the Asian Next Wave, the festival’s main competition section, and Screen International, respectively.
Return to Seoul by Cambodian-French filmmaker Chou is about a twenty-five-year-old French woman Frankie who returns to South Korea for the first time to where she was born before being adopted and raised in France. In her hopes to find her biological parents, her journey takes a surprising turn. Return to Seoul was nominated for Best Film at the 2022 Sydney Film Festival.
Patrick Brzeski of The Hollywood Reporter describes Return to Seoul as “expressive, unpredictable, feminist and fun, Freddie is a vibrant beam of searching, semi-wounded humanity.” For Clarence Tsui of South China Morning Post, Chou’s film surpasses its basic premise, he said: “Though Chou is neither a woman nor a Korean, nor an adoptee, he has managed to find something in Return to Seoul that he clearly connects with and that resonates with anyone else looking for their own place in the world, too.”
Austrian director Kreutzer’s Corsage is a film about the late years of Empress Elisabeth of Austria played by Vicky Krieps who bagged the Un Certain Regard award for Best Performance. Empress Elisabeth ‘Sissi’ is idolized for her beauty and renowned for inspiring fashion trends. But in 1877, as she celebrated her 40th birthday, she must fight to maintain her public image by lacing her corset tighter and tighter.
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian commends the Corsage star Vicky Krieps for her performance as Elisabeth, “Vicky Krieps puts in a star turn. An exhilaratingly fierce, uningratiating performance.” Stephanie Bunbury of Deadline also praised the actress, “Vicky Krieps brings great complexity to her portrait of the empress.”
Cannes 2019 Best Screenplay winner and Golden Globe nominee, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, a French film by Celine Sciamma, is also returning this year in cinemas under QCinema’s Rainbow QC section and is being co-presented by the French Film Festival and the QCinema LGBTQIA+ Program. The film also won the Queer Palm at Cannes, making it the first film directed by a woman to win the award. Rainbow QC showcases the distinctive portrayals of the LGBT experience in varying periods and settings.
Aside from Return to Seoul, Corsage, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire, the FDCP also is bringing other top-notch international films to the Philippines including Celine Sciamma’s latest feature Petite Maman, Joachim Trier’s Oscar-nominated (Best International Feature and Best Screenplay) film The Worst Person in the World where actress Renate Reinsve won Best Actress in Cannes 2021, and 2021 Cannes Un Certain Regard film, Women Do Cry, by Vesela Kazakova and Mina Mileva.
