Disney+ Streaming Review — There’s Great Promise and Potential from ‘Ironheart’ but They Don’t Have Enough Episodes to Fully Realise It

Debuting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in ‘Wakanda Forever,’ Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart, was portrayed as a genius on par with Tony Stark, but without any of his privilege. After the events of that film, her streaming series follows the aftermath of her involvement with major MCU characters. She trained and learned under Shuri in Wakanda and earned a scholarship to study at MIT. However, her determination to build an iron suit to protect the people she loves, drawn from a trauma involving her best friend and her father, mirrors the same determination Tony Stark had during ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ and we know how that turned out. Her recklessness and unorthodox, even illegal, methods of funding her research lead to her expulsion from MIT, forcing her to return to Chicago and start over.

The premise is incredible. The MCU has introduced so many people who had strong support system from the get-go. Tony Stark had generational wealth. Black Panther, both T’Challa and Shuri, had the kingdom of Wakanda and all its resources at their disposal. Doctor Strange had access to the vast libraries of Kamar-Taj. Even Steve Rogers had the backing of the U.S. government, while Sam Wilson had the support of Stark Industries at one point. It’s refreshing to see a character who is just as brilliant as these characters but has to hustle and even do less than savory things just to be able to do some good.

It’s a metaphor for how marginalized sectors of America are sometimes forced to go against their nature in order to rise through the ranks and do what they believe is right. It’s an irony, but also a symptom of the systems in place that forces the underprivileged, especially people of color, most notably Black communities, to struggle against seemingly unbeatable odds.

    Disney Ironheart 1

This makes Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) an interesting character to watch. She’s tough and unapologetic. She’s isolated, even from the people who love her, because she’s so used to fighting and is afraid to deal with loss again. While her end goal is that of the righteous and of the good, she’s willing to break the rules to achieve it. This is all punctuated by the fact that she’s still a teenager. Filled with emotions, she hasn’t yet learned to see the bigger picture. At some point in the show, she refuses to be called a hero. She’s selfish and self-possessed, another byproduct of her age, her environment, her history, and her intellect. And that’s exactly what makes her so compelling to watch.

    Disney Ironheart 2

And it’s because of this that the Disney+ series ‘Ironheart’ is so disappointing. A show like this – that talks about her past trauma, her struggles with securing funding and being taken seriously, and her constant battle against a system that keeps beating her down, deserves more than just six episodes. It needs more time to fully explore these themes and to fully develop her character.

    Disney Ironheart 6

At just six episodes, the show rushes through so many narrative beats that it feels incomplete and underdeveloped. ‘Ms. Marvel’ and ‘Hawkeye,’ two other MCU Disney+ shows, managed to keep their narratives cohesive by focusing on personal themes and staying squarely on character development. ‘Ironheart,’ on the other hand, punches big. But without the episodes to fully explore the underground tech world that Riri has to scour through to rebuild her armor or fully realise the fragile dynamic between her and her mother and the other characters in the show who she feels very strongly about, or the mystical nature of the villain and his own take of disrupting the system. It feels unfair for ‘Ironheart’ to not be given the space the story they chose to tell needs to be able to fully flesh out the whole narrative.

    Disney Ironheart 5
Parker Robbins/The Hood (Anthony Ramos) in Marvel Television’s IRONHEART, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Marvel. © 2025 MARVEL. All Rights Reserved.

But there are a lot of good things in it. As Riri joins The Hood (Anthony Ramos) and his gang to afford rebuilding her suit, she engages in capers that target billionaires. There’s the element of the caper genre that plays nicely to this level of super heroics (though technically, she’s one of the bad guys). Her relationship with her mom (Anji White) could have potentially been a wonderful tender spot for the show if they really gave it more time to develop and grow as well as her relationship with her AI, NATALIE (Lyric Ross), who somehow managed to become the exact persona of her late best friend. And then there’s her engagement with a black-market hoarder of tech, Joe McGillicuddy (Alden Ehrenreich). Riri and Joe’s interactions are the most fully fleshed-out narrative in this show because they are an excellent counterpoint for each other but when Joe gets tangled up in all of Riri’s shenanigans and it affects him squarely, his own individual narrative arc feels rushed and underdeveloped, as well.

    Disney Ironheart 13
    IRONHEART

There’s a lot of action here, some really good story beats, and some excellent acting from Thorne, White, Ross, and Ehrenreich but the show really needed an extra four episodes or even six to fully embrace this world. Riri, for someone without any funds, seems to manage to quickly rebuild her suit time and time again when that was the central premise from the beginning. I liked ‘Ironheart’ for its promise and its potential, but I know that it could have been better.

  • Streaming Series Review — A Dynamic Duo: A Review of ‘Nine Puzzles,’ a New Crime K-Drama on Disney+

Streaming Series Review — A Dynamic Duo: A Review of ‘Nine Puzzles,’ a New Crime K-Drama on Disney+

The buddy cop genre is not a new one but ‘Nine Puzzles’ turns the genre over its head when one of the buddies happens to be the prime suspect of a gruesome series of murders that points to a serial killer. Headlining Kim Da-mi and Son Suk-ku, this thrilling new show dropped its first 6 episodes last May 21 and will be dropping the next 3 episodes on May 28 and then the final 2 episodes on June 4. This fast-paced suspense thriller is unique in the way the character dynamics have been set up.

In the show, Kim Da-mi plays Yoon E-na, a high school student who was the first person to find her uncle’s murdered body. No witnesses, no evidence of a forced entry, Yoon E-na became the prime suspect but because there is no evidence or witnesses, E-na’s charges were dropped. The investigator, Kim Han-saem (Son Suk-ku) insists that she’s the culprit. 10 years later, E-na is now a criminal profiler and discovers a murder victim that is somehow connected to her uncle’s murder 10 years ago by a mysterious puzzle piece. While Kim Han-saem still insists she’s the killer, Yoon E-na takes on the case and sticks close to Kim Han-saem, the only person she trusts (even if the feeling isn’t mutual).

    DIsney Nine Puzzles 1 Large

Traumatized by finding her dead uncle’s body and questioning her own innocence, Yoon E-na goes to therapy while putting on a child-like exterior that is misread by everyone around her. She’s focused only on her work and in getting what she wants and she’s getting on everyone’s nerves. The person she annoys the most is Kim Han-saem, whose only unsolved case is that of her uncle. He goes along because he feels that he will catch her red-handed but as victims start to pile up, the serial killings are leading up to a bigger story.

    DIsney Nine Puzzles 5 Large

Director Yoon Jong-bin does an amazing job at creating the mood and really pushing this world into the genre. The world is dark and gritty. There’s no one to trust and every episode has a new discovery that keeps the audience guessing at every turn. It’s fast-paced, not giving in to unnecessary plot points so that the investigation is always at the forefront, but writer Lee Eun-mi manages to find spaces in the investigation to really play with the characters of Yoon E-na and Kim Han-saem. Their banter is funny but lays the groundwork for the friendship that starts to blossom between the two. Kim Han-saem is not entirely sure of her innocence but he becomes a believer of her profiling skills.

    DIsney Nine Puzzles 12 Large

And this where the show finds moments of brilliance. Director Yoon Jong-bin recreates every murder from the perspective of E-na or Han-saem, who is trying to deduce how the murder happens. The world turns black and either of the cops becomes the culprit for the reenactment to show how they are understanding the killer. It’s probably been done before but it works for this show. Also, Yoon is not afraid to pull back every now and then to let the show be funny.

    DIsney Nine Puzzles 10 Large

Kim Da-mi is at her wheelhouse. I’ve seen her playing big characters before like ‘Itaewon Class’ and ‘Our Beloved Summer’ so playing E-na is a piece of cake for her. She imbues her with so much child-like exuberance but still manages to telegraph how emotionally vulnerable she is. It’s all a front and there are moments when the character thinks no one is watching that she can let her guard down just a bit. She really nails it in the last two episodes of the series. It’s something you really wait for.

    DIsney Nine Puzzles 7 Large

On the other hand, Son Suk-ku turns this gruff, rough around the edge’s maverick investigator into someone familiar and endearing. He has a good heart that he’s trying to hide, and Son does a really good job at giving us glimpses of it without revealing it to the people around him in a scene. The dynamic he has with Kim makes the show work.

    DIsney Nine Puzzles 8 Large

Rounding up the cast is a strong ensemble including Kim Sung-kyun (‘Reply 1988’, ‘Moving’) and Hyun Bong-sik (‘Gangnam B-Side’, ‘Sweet Home’). But the other standout here is Yoon E-na’s therapist played by Park Gyu-young (‘Celebrity,’ ‘Sweet Home,’ “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay’). She is trying to have a professional relationship with Yoon E-na as her therapist but E-na is constantly pushing against the boundaries. Park Gyu-young tries to maintain her stoicism in front of such a chaotic patient and how it shifts and turns as the story progresses is also something to watch out for.

‘Nine Puzzles’ is quite a fun ride with lots of twists and turns and a wonderful set of leads that gives us a partnership to root for. While the first two sets of episode drops are satisfying, the last two feels rush and could have used another episode to really flesh out that ending. One more episode to have managed the pace could have done the show a lot of good but as it is, it’s a winner for Disney+.

Exclusive: Disney+’s ‘Nine Puzzles’ Press Conference Unveils K-Drama Mystery with Cast Guarding Spoilers

ClickTheCity was invited to an exclusive virtual press conference for Disney+’s new crime K-Drama Nine Puzzles, featuring stars Kim Da-mi (Itaewon Class, Our Beloved Summer) and Son Suk-ku (My Liberation Notes, Big Bet). Joining the leads were supporting actors Kim Sung-kyun (Reply 1988, Moving) and Hyung Bong-sik (Gangnam B-Side, Gyeongseong Creature), alongside director Yoon Jong-bin.

‘Nine Puzzles’ is a crime drama where Kim Da-mi plays Yoon E-na, a high school student who was the first person to find her uncle’s murdered body. No witnesses, no evidence of a forced entry, Yoon E-na became the prime suspect but because there is no evidence or witnesses (or motive), E-na’s charges were dropped. The investigator, Kim Han-saem (Son Suk-ku) insists that she’s the culprit. 10 years later, E-na is now a criminal profiler and discovers a murder victim that is somehow connected to her uncle’s murder 10 years ago by a mysterious puzzle piece. Kim Han-saem must work with her while still suspecting her for being the culprit in a chase over a mysterious set of serial killings that involves the police and other high-profile targets.

    DIsney Nine Puzzles 9 Large

It’s a unique buddy-cop dynamic with Yoon E-na hides her trauma by acting cold and child-like, which infuriates the gruff and tough Kim Han-saem, who cannot shake the feeling that Yoon E-na is the killer. The interplay of this creates an interesting relationship between the two and fuels the show’s heart and soul.

    Disney+ Nine Puzzles Press Conference

During the press conference, the most striking thing to notice is Kim Da-mi, who looks awkward and aloof throughout the photo session at the beginning of the session. Son Suk-ku and other cast are chill, unafraid to get silly or cute when doing their poses for the photographers, but Kim Da-mi is quiet and is working hard to try and give a sincere smile. It’s such a far-cry from her characters in her previous works like ‘Itaewon Class’ and ‘Our Beloved Summer,’ where she plays characters that are larger than life; people with big personalities – much like her character in the show, Yoon E-na. Later, it is revealed that Kim Da-mi is a huge introvert, which explains her reserved nature. Son Suk-ku, when asked about his working relationship with Kim Da-mi, said “Kim Da-mi and I are very similar. We are both introverts and we are both no-frills so it was easy to work together.”

DIsney Nine Puzzles Kim Dami and Son Sukku 1 Large

Kim Da-mi, on the other hand, is grateful for Son Suk-ku for his professional approach, which she appreciated. She said, “When I saw Son Sok-ku for the first time, he was friendly, and he came up to me and talked about the show and how we can rely on each other. I really appreciated that.”

There’s so much chemistry amongst the cast that was present at the press conference. In the show, Hyun Bong-sik plays the youngest, as his character is the latest addition to the violent crimes unit, and so he is treated like everyone’s junior, even Yoon E-na. “I usually play the head of the police department,” says Hyun, “so this was new for me. I really liked the script.”

It’s the script that also drew Kim Da-mi to the show. “I read the script in one-go,” she says. She was so invested in the story that she knew she had to do it. For Son Sok-ku, it was because he’s a huge fan of the director. When he was asked to be a part of the cast, he said “of course.” The same for Kim Sung-kyun, who had worked with director Yoon Jong-bin before, 14 years ago, and calls it “like a reunion.”

DIsney Nine Puzzles 1 1 Large

Director Yoon Jong-bin knew he wanted Kim Da-mi for Yoon E-na the moment he saw the script. He admits that Yoon E-na can be a frustrating character to follow but immediately thought of Kim to play her because “she could play this character without the audience hating on her.”

The child-like quality of Yoon E-na can be off-putting. Especially since she is also a prime suspect and her dismissive nature to other people’s emotions or the current situation can make her seem apathetic and even more suspicious. For Kim Da-mi, her approach was to to use E-na’s trauma to define her. “E-na is kind of stuck in that time period,” she says, referencing the show’s opening scene when E-na discovers her uncle’s dead body. “She is vulnerable inside,” she continues, “but has childish characteristics. She says what she wants and does what she wants.”

When asked by the reporters on-site how Kim Da-mi sees the relationship between Yoon E-na and Kim Han-saem, Kim softens and smiles. She takes a while to answer the question and then says, “He becomes someone she can’t live without.”

The cast is very careful about spoilers. When you watch the show, you will notice so many twists and turns throughout the investigation that keeps you on your toes. It never goes where you think it does and so the whole time at the press conference, they were so careful about giving anything away.

At some point, Son Suk-ku just talks about how he put his character together like how he was able to influence Kim Han-saem’s use of beanies throughout the show. “I like wearing beanies,’ admits Son, “so I asked the director if his research says investigators can’t wear beanies and when he said that it doesn’t break any rules, I started wearing them in the first few episodes.” The director like it so much that they wrote it into the script.

The chemistry was so strong, and you can see this in the show, how well the actors play off each other. But it wasn’t easy for director Yoon Jong-bin to do this. He tells the story: “I like to bring the cast together and have a meal and drink. It creates organic chemistry but it was so difficult with this cast because Son Suk-ku and Hyun Bong-sik doesn’t drink and Kim Da-mi is an extreme introvert.” But he was able to manage something because what he ended up with is a cast that worked so well-together that the show shines because of their dynamics.

Marvel fans, brace yourselves—something brilliant is coming your way. The teaser trailer and official poster for the highly-anticipated Marvel Television series, “Ironheart,” have just been unveiled, and it’s safe to say the hype is officially real.

    2 2

Launching exclusively on Disney+ on June 25, 2025, “Ironheart” stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a genius inventor whose self-made iron suits are reshaping the next generation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Meet Riri Williams: A New Era of Genius and Grit

Riri made her debut in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and now she’s stepping fully into her own power. With brains, boldness, and brilliance, Riri brings a fresh twist to the Iron legacy—this time, through the eyes of a Black teenage prodigy from Chicago.

“Ironheart is such a great character in publishing,” said Coogler. “In 2016, Brian Michael Bendis created a character who would be a successor of sorts to the Iron Man legacy. In the comic book, Riri Williams and Tony Stark had a relationship—she was a student at MIT who came from an almost polar opposite background as Tony, but they came together in their passion to better society. Eventually, the character gets her own identity as Ironheart, and other writers like Eve Ewing picked up from there, taking Riri Williams to Chicago.”

Tech Meets Magic in Marvel’s Most Inventive Storyline Yet

Set in the aftermath of Wakanda Forever, “Ironheart” returns us to Riri’s hometown of Chicago, where ambition meets arcane. As she perfects her cutting-edge armor, she crosses paths with Parker Robbins aka The Hood, played by Anthony Ramos—a mystical wildcard with charm and danger to spare.

With technology clashing against magic, Riri must navigate new threats and personal trials, all while building a name for herself beyond the shadows of Iron Man.

A Star-Packed Cast and Visionary Team Behind the Scenes

Joining Thorne and Ramos are an impressive ensemble:

Guiding the story is head writer Chinaka Hodge, with episodes helmed by directors Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes. The series is executive produced by Marvel heavyweights Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, and Ryan Coogler, among others. Music comes courtesy of Dara Taylor, ensuring the sonic vibe is just as powerful as the visuals.

  • Disney+ Streaming News: ‘Hyper Knife’ Cast Breaks Down Their Characters at Exclusive Press Conference

Disney+ Streaming News: ‘Hyper Knife’ Cast Breaks Down Their Characters at Exclusive Press Conference

With the release of the first two episodes of Disney+’s new streaming medical thriller ‘Hyper Knife’ the world gets to see a different side to Korean superstar Park Eun-bin. She has wowed audiences with her earnest and textured performance in the popular hit K-Drama ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ and a look at her filmography shows that she has played challenging yet more grounded characters. Now, in this gripping suspense series, she has shed all the goodness that we’ve come to know of her from ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ or ‘The King’s Affection’ as she tackles the sociopathic genius underground doctor Jung Se-Ok.

    Hyper Knife 하이퍼나이프 배우단체1

Like every press conference, the actors and the director take turns coming on stage to pose for the cameras. It’s charming to see actor Yoon Chang-young, who plays Seo Young-joo in the series, look so awkward and nervous despite having debuted as far back as 2013 and having starred in the hit zombie series ‘All of Us Are Dead.’ In comparison to his older co-stars, Park Eun-bin, Park Byung-Eun, and the legendary Sul Kyung-gul, Yoon Chang-young looks so young and naive despite his rather impressive resume as he started as a child actor like Park Eun Bin.

Alongside with director Kim Jung-Hyun, the cast went down to really talk about how different this show is going to be. “It’s a very strange story,’ says Kim, “There’s something off about each of the characters. You won’t normally get to meet characters like these in a K-Drama. It’s almost like a fairy tale but bloody.’ We know this from just the first two episodes alone. Seeing Park Eun-bin play a rather blood thirsty character is such a surprise. She describes her character as a “prodigy and a genius neurosurgeon who has an obsession. She is uncontrollable.” The real Park Eun-bin is bright and cheerful, a complete opposite of her character Jung Se-Ok and Park is quick to add: “I can’t ask you to root for her, but I hope you can enjoy the show.” She emphasizes that there are people like this and that hopefully viewers will find them an interesting watch on television.

    Hyper Knife 하이퍼나이프 박은빈2

Playing opposite of Park Eun-bin is Sul Kyung-Gu, who plays her former mentor who disgraces her and removes her medical license forcing her to go underground. On his character, he says “Choi Deok-hee is like a person who is isolated on an island. He is lonely but he doesn’t let anyone near him. He is self-centered and clumsy, and he has no one to admire except for Jung Se-Ok. But he can also be petty. Very petty.” Sul continues to explain that the two leads are dark reflection of each other, practically mirror images and he hopes that the connection between the two will make the audience excited to tune in every week.

    Hyper KNife 하이퍼나이프 윤찬영 3

It’s this darkness that attracted Park Eun-bin to the role. She narrates how she got the script while shooting ‘Castaway Diva’ and she was hooked on just reading the logline on the first page. She shares that “no one believes me when I say that I am so safe in my choices.I only take roles that I know I can deliver well but this role is a real challenge for me.” She reiterates her earlier message saying she doesn’t want anyone to “understand her character.” She talks about the genre called picaresque, which she says “is a genre where the protagonist is not a hero. He’s a bad person and that’s what we are doing in this show.”

    Hyper Knife Poster

Sul talks about how he didn’t have to work hard in learning how to look like a competent doctor. “There are stand-ins for the procedures and close-ups on the hands,” he admits but is quick to add that “there are no stand-ins for Park Eun-bin.” He says that she’s so small that they couldn’t find a doctor to play her parts so Park Eun Bin had to train and learn how to do all the operations in the show so she could perform it on camera.

For a cast that are working with each other for the first time, there’s a lot of love and affection that is thrown around here. Despite the dark nature of the show, the chemistry is going to be off the charts if the first two episodes and the press conference are any indication.

Don’t miss out on this gripping new thriller! Watch Hyper Knife now on Disney+ and witness Park Eun-bin and Sul Kyung-gu’s electrifying face-off.

  • Disney+ Streaming Review — Park Eun-bin Excites with a Darker Character in Disney+ Thriller ‘Hyper Knife’

Disney+ Streaming Review — Park Eun-bin Excites with a Darker Character in Disney+ Thriller ‘Hyper Knife’

After her award-winning performance in ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo,’ Park Eun-bin has able to showcase her commitment to character and her vast range as an actress. In the new Disney+ series ‘Hyper Knife,’ she goes head-to-head with another incredible Korean talent, the film actor Sul Kyung-gu of movies like ‘Memoirs of a Murderer,’ the wildly fun ‘Kill Boksoon,’ and ‘The Moon’ with Exo member D.O. Park and Sul face off as former mentor and former student, two genius neurosurgeons whose past has forced them to a bloody path as they reconnect again at the start of the series.

Seeing the first two episodes, ‘Hype Knife’ is a dark tale where there are no heroes; or at least at the start. Park Eun-bin’s Jeong Seok and Sul Kyung-gu’s Choi Deok-Hee are people whose genius pushes them to a level of sociopathy. While the older Deok-Hee seems more capable of acting like an empathic human being among others, the younger Jeong Seok is impatient, impetuous, and self-absorbed. Both think they are better than everyone, but Jeong Seok is not afraid to verbalize it.

    Disney Hyper Knife Still 2

At the start of the series, Jeong Seok has already fallen from grace, removed from an operating room while finishing her surgery by Choi Deok-Hee, the two have a spat and her medical license is removed. The show opens with her doing an illegal, underground brain surgery on a gangster boss at an abandoned temple in the mountains. Deok-Hee, simultaneously, is conducting his own operation at a hospital but something’s off. Jeong Seok is at home in this rough environment. The make-shift operating room doesn’t disturb her at all. We’ve come to realise she loves the job; she loves being a surgeon. She’d do anything to continue to operate. The police are after her as a video of an extremely difficult procedure comes to light and as they bring the video to Choi Deok-Hee for confirmation, he knows the only person who could do it is Jeong Seok. He now tries to find her for his own purposes.

To say their meeting is explosive is an understatement. He needs something from her, but she wants him to suffer for what he did to her and with that, the game begins.

Park Eun-bin and Sul Kyung-gu are playing shades and textures of what appears to be the same character. One is a younger version, full of life, and a massive ego that refuses to bow down to anyone else’s authority. The other is just as arrogant but is tempered by age and wisdom and what appears to be a need to maintain a certain respectability. But they are both ruthless and brilliant and seeing them come head-to-head is going to be quite exiting.

It’s extremely exciting for me to see Park Eun-bin throw herself at a character like Jeong Seok. The role is feisty and completely amoral. She is unburdened by any sense of authority or social mores thus she’s a complete wildcard. What makes this character exciting for Park Eun-bin to play is how it contrasts so much with her small, petite frame and youthful beauty. But her eyes are dead except when she is hatching a plan or when she’s about to operate. Just by looking at her you think she can’t hurt a fly and then she does, and even more so. It’s so unexpected that if the show keeps utilizing this disconnect, it can make for some really great moments for the show.

Disney Hyper Knife Seo Yeongju 4

Creating a moral center for the show is Jeong Seok’s assistant, Seo Young-joo (Yoon Chang Young). Yoon Chang Young is a great counterpoint for Jeong Seok and their rapport and banter is pretty interesting. I can’t wait to discover how she and he are connected and how his character will either bring her back from the dark side or if he will be sucked into her darkness. If the show manages to stay dark and gritty and pulls no punches, this is a show that can be as engaging as ‘Gangnam B-Side.’ With the talent involved, this has all the potential to be a fun and exciting show to invest in.

Disney+ Streaming Review — From the Ashes: A Review of the First Two Episodes of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

The new Daredevil series begins with a gorgeous, grounded coverage of the city bursting with busy-ness and life. A montage of the characters we’ve come to know from the 3-season Netflix series it follows – Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson, and Karen Page – showing us that they’ve returned to working together and, for the first time, it seems our titular character Matt Murdock looks happy. The shots bring out the flavor and textures of New York; that of ordinary people, outside the usual hustle-and-bustle of the MCU. This is meant to bring us closer to real people and real lives. Probably a way to remind us that Murdock is unlike Tony Stark or Thor. He’s a lawyer, first, as well as a superpowered costume vigilante. His battle against injustice is at two fronts.

But when a battle ensues with someone from his past, Murdock is forced to don the mask and fight crime as Daredevil. People are hurt, tragedy strikes, and Murdock is pushed over the edge. As he later states in the pilot episode, “A line was crossed…”—and from that moment, the show takes an unexpected turn.

The prologue’s promise of a continuation of the series storylines is an illusion. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is exactly that: a rebirth. That tragedy changes Matt Murdock and the story continues a year after that monumental event, and he has not been Daredevil of that period of time. He starts a new firm and surrounds himself with new people, including an investigator, Cherry, who is aware of his former identity. Murdock is more cynical now, a bit jaded. So much so that his partner tries to set him up with someone new, a doctor, Dr. Heather Glenn.

Things are looking different, quieter and peaceful until Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, runs for Mayor. And Murdock struggles whether he would return to his vigilante ways or has Wilson Fisk really turned a new leaf? Matt Murdock doesn’t think so. And the nine-episode season tells us, at some point, he will find a reason to put the mask on again.

There’s still a darkness to the series, with showrunner Dario Scardapane at the helm, but off the bat the cinematography is already a bit brighter, even during the dark. The flash of humor is a very Marvel + Disney thing and doesn’t hold the same bite that it did in the old Netflix series. The show is trying its best to hold on to its foundations – the old show – but also trying to present it in a new way. There’s a bit more CGI than I’m comfortable with; especially because it’s not clean and can get very distracting. There’s even a fight scene in episode one that is reminiscent to the famous first season fight scene of ‘Daredevil,’ the one shot that was a tribute to ‘Oldboy.’ Unfortunately, the fight scene in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ doesn’t have that same energy and is muddled by weird choreography and blocking and some unflattering CGI movements that makes it feel manufactured. It doesn’t have that grit and power that the originals have.

But once you’ve shaken that initial feeling of having to compare the two (because let’s face it, the Netflix Daredevil series is so loved) and acclimate to the Disney-fied version of ‘Daredevil: Born Again,’ there’s quite a lot to enjoy from the new show. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are always a joy playing these two characters and with the premise of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ there’s an unsteady truce between them. It gives opportunities to meet and talk and their acting prowess just makes the screen sizzle with energy. From the first two episodes, we can feel the push and pull inside Murdock and Fisk, the way they are trying to hold on to a change they have committed to; but we can see them breaking. We can see the cracks. It’s wonderful and I can’t wait to see it unfold over the season.

Ayelet Zurer returns as Vanessa Fisk, Wilson Fisk’s wife, who has taken over his crime business while the Kingpin was recovering from a gunshot to the face (as implied in the last episode of ‘Hawkeye’ and possibly in ‘Echo,’ which I have not seen). Zurer had always made Vanessa such an interesting character and it’s nice to see her add a new layer to the role. Margarita Levieva plays Dr. Heather Glenn, who serves as an interesting romantic interest for the Daredevil, but we’ll get to see her flex her acting chops as her story seems to intersect into the rest of the plot beyond just as a love interest by the second episode. As previewed in press materials and on social media, the White Tiger will make an appearance by the second episode while the Punisher is nowhere yet to be seen.

Shot during 2023, there’s a lot of subtexts within the show’s premise that is mirroring America after its most recent election. The Kingpin running for office and the way the show tries to explore and navigate the social aspect of such a move directly articulates a lot of present-day feelings. The fact that the show began filming before the election will shield it from any political notions, though it could still reflect the current U.S. president’s first term. But the groundedness I mentioned at the beginning of this review makes ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ more than just a superhero TV show. The fact that Matt Murdock is struggling whether he will be more effective as a lawyer or as a vigilante in a political and social landscape in the show that is very similar to that in real life – it makes it something even more interesting to watch.

We’ve been waiting for this! Despite a few fumbles, it’s looking good. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is looking really good.
