When disaster strikes in the form of a monumental earthquake, the vibrant city of Seoul finds itself in ruins. Amidst the desolation, one structure, Hwang Gung Apartments, remains miraculously intact. This building becomes a symbol of hope and salvation for those who have lost everything. But this newfound refuge doesn’t come without its challenges. With an influx of survivors seeking shelter, the original residents, with ‘Young-tak’ at the helm, grapple with a dilemma: welcome these desperate souls or protect their sanctuary at all costs. The unfolding events beautifully spotlight the multifaceted human spirit, showcasing our innate tenacity, vulnerabilities, and the age-old tussle between self-preservation and empathy.

So, cinephiles and curious minds, gear up! We’re about to provide you with five insightful facts about “Concrete Utopia” that’ll enhance your movie-watching experience.

Lastly, KIM Do-yoon impresses as Do-kyun, a resident anchored in idealism amidst chaos. Do-yoon’s nuanced performance adds depth to a character who frequently finds himself at odds with fellow residents.

Each actor brings their own flavor, making the movie a melting pot of emotions, challenges, and triumphs. The combined talents of these actors illuminate the screen, making “Concrete Utopia” not just a film, but a magnificent canvas of performances that linger long after the credits roll.

    2) A Unique Setting Sets “Concrete Utopia” Apart

“Everything has fallen. Except for our apartments.” It’s a chilling premise that sets “Concrete Utopia” apart from other disaster films. At its core, the film asks a question that sends shivers down one’s spine: “What if our apartment complex is the only building left standing after a devastating earthquake?”

Park Seo jun Park Bo young

The disaster film genre has been a popular one, offering gripping tales of human resilience and survival amidst overwhelming odds. However, “Concrete Utopia” takes a refreshingly distinct approach. Instead of expansive cityscapes or isolated natural landscapes, the story is centered around an apartment complex – Hwang Gung Apartments, to be exact. What’s normally considered a mundane backdrop becomes a pivotal setting, offering both a sanctuary and a powder keg of tensions.

Center Lee Byung hun as Young tak

This creative twist can be attributed to Climax Studio, the powerhouse behind other Netflix sensations like “Hellbound” and “D.P.” Their trademark storytelling prowess shines through in this unique narrative. As the last bastion against a decimated Seoul, Hwang Gung Apartments not only becomes a physical refuge but also a crucible for human behavior. The plot intensifies as Young-tak steps into leadership and the residents, in their bid for safety and order, confront both internal conflicts and external threats. This isn’t just a disaster movie; it’s an exploration of human nature at its breaking point.

    3) The Authenticity of Hwang Gung Apartments

A film is often as strong as its set design, and “Concrete Utopia” is no exception. When it came to creating a realistic portrayal of a post-disaster world, the team left no stone unturned, crafting a tale that is both visually mesmerizing and deeply authentic.

Director UM Tae-hwa’s vision was clear – the audience must believe this could be their reality. As the narrative’s heartbeat, the Hwang Gung Apartments received unparalleled attention from the production crew. This wasn’t a mere set; it was a construction project in its own right. They built the apartments up to the third floor, complete with meticulously designed interiors reflecting the characters’ backstories, professions, and traits. This immersive approach was devised to effortlessly draw viewers into the unfolding drama.

    4) The Daunting Challenge of Depicting Disaster

The cataclysmic scene where Seoul meets its destructive fate is another testament to the team’s dedication. Overseeing this daunting endeavor was CG Supervisor EUN Jae-hyun, who simulated hundreds of renditions of ground ruptures and collapsing structures to perfect the chilling moment. To accurately recreate post-disaster Seoul, the director and CG supervisor embarked on an exhaustive journey, scrutinizing every nook and cranny of the city. Their thoroughness knew no bounds – from analyzing over 10,000 photographs to referencing the spacing between streetlights.

    5) Beyond Sets – Make-up and Wardrobe Magic

The backdrop of a chilly Seoul post-quake introduced another dimension of authenticity – the costume and make-up. Despite filming in summer, the cast was adorned in winter gear to reflect the cold wave’s onset, and the dedicated make-up team masterfully showcased the effects of the harsh weather on skin and hair.

  • Get a glimpse of Hwang Gung Apartments residents in the “Concrete Utopia” character trailer

Get to know more about the characters of Concrete Utopia and the actors and actresses that portrayed them, as described by director Um Tae-hwa.

Young tak Lee Byung hun resized

YOUNG-TAK, Resident Delegate of Hwang Gung Apartments

    Played by: Lee Byung-hun

Young-tak, a resident of Hwang Gung Apartments, caught everyone’s attention when he rushed inside a burning house without hesitation to put out a fire. His selfless act of risking his own life led him to be elected as the Resident Delegate. After that, when the situation calls for desperate measures, Young-tak puts himself on the line again, which leads to him gaining more trust and confidence among the residents.

Director Um Tae-hwa is all praises for Lee Byung-hun. “There was a scene when he expressed all his character has gone through through his facial expression alone,” says Um. “It was a moment when I witnessed the true definition of cinema.”

Min sung Park Seo jun resized

MIN-SUNG, a family man struggling for his family’s survival

    Played by: Park Seo-jun

For Min-sung, surviving this chaos with his beloved wife Myung-hwa is his top priority. Having previously served as an auxiliary policeman, and currently working as a public servant, he unintentionally drew the attention of the other residents, which led him to be chosen as the leader of the anti-crime force by Young-tak. As he witnesses Young-tak’s unwavering devotion toward other people and his decisiveness in leading the survivors, Min-sung himself gradually changes and starts to resemble him in a way.

“I was certain he could portray a wide range of different aspects of Min-sung,” says director Um of Park Seo-jun. “I hoped I could bring it out of him. I’m confident that the audience will be captivated by his performance.”

Myung hwa Park Bo young resized

MYUNG-HWA, the one who tries to hold on to her values

    Played by: Park Bo-young

A resident of Hwang Gung Apartments, living in unit 602. After the unexpected catastrophe brought by a massive earthquake, she tries to keep calm and think of ways to live on with her husband, Min-sung. Myung-hwa has no hesitation in sharing her home with outsiders who have nowhere to go in the cold, and takes the initiative in caring for the injured residents as a nurse. She grows concerned as she notices changes in residents over time.

Director Um says of Park Bo-young, “I was always curious and wanted to see another aspect of PARK Bo-young different from the images of her that we are familiar with. She has satisfied all of that.”

Geum ae Kim Sun young resized

GEUM-AE, the head of Hwang Gung Apartments women’s association

    Played by: Kim Sun-young

A resident of room 207, who serves as the head of the women’s association at Hwang Gung Apartments. When it comes to the safety of residents and herself, Geum-ae does not hesitate to take action. She’s the one who recommended Young-tak as the Resident Delegate and she firmly believes in following Resident Regulations no matter what. She plays a central role in bringing residents together while remaining extremely vigilant against any potential threats.

Director Um says that Kim Sun-young perfectly embodies the ordinary yet profound nature of the character of Geum-ae, enabling audiences to be fully immersed in the movie.

Hye won Park Ji hu resized

HYE-WON, who has returned from the hellish outside

    Played by: Park Ji-hu

A resident of room 903, who miraculously survives the earthquake and returns alone to Hwang Gung Apartments. Under a new set of regulations, living with residents is never the same as before. Observing residents being bizarrely optimistic as if they don’t care about the hellish outside, Hye-won experiences an inexplicable sense of unease.

“She embodied the character just right even in situations where she had to convey a wealth of emotions through facial expressions and gazes alone,” the director says of Park Ji-hu.

Do kyun Kim Do yoon resized

    DO-KYUN, an uncooperative resident

    Played by: Kim Do-yoon

A resident of room 809 in Hwang Gung Apartments. Dissatisfied with the approach of the residents’ committee led by Young-tak and Geum-ae, he starts making excuses for himself and is uncooperative. He complies with the basic rules so as not to go against the current, but he refuses to do any more. Amidst each of the residents’ various struggles to survive, he becomes more and more isolated.

Director Um says of Kim Do-yoon, “Kim Do-yoon excelled at portraying this character whose neat and smart appearance gradually begins to fray and collapse.”

Directed by Um Tae-hwa, Concrete Utopia is loosely based on Part 2 of the hit webtoon “Joyful Outcast” (“Pleasant Neighbors”) and stars an ensemble of A-list Korean actors including Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-jun, Park Bo-young, Park Ji-hu, Kim Do-yoon and Kim Sun-young. • MOVIE REVIEW: Dystopia, from the eyes of the Everyman: a review of ‘Concrete Utopia’

Headlined by Korean superstars Lee Byung-hun (‘Squid Game,’ ‘Mr. Sunshine’), Park Seo Jun (‘Itaewon Class,’ ‘Dream’), and Park Bo-Young (‘Strong Girl Bongsoon’), the dystopian science fiction film ‘Concrete Utopia’ is a hard-look at civilization at the cold-hard grip of a disaster. It is a 129-minute relentless character study of the human race on survival mode. It is unafraid to get scary, poignant, and surprisingly funny.

Without warning, a massive earthquake ravages the city of Seoul and, in the most fantastical way, only one apartment building has remained untouched after the devastation. This touch of magic elevates the film into the level of a dark fable or a cautionary tale. At the start, the residents of the apartment building has taken in outsiders looking for shelter but as thieving and violence begins to erupt, the residents decide to take control of the space and kick everyone else out. A governing body is then formed and a system is enacted to keep the peace and to ensure the resident’s survival.

We see this through three perspectives: Lee Byung-hun’s Yeong-tak, who becomes the defacto leader when he shows decisive decision-making skills when a fire erupts early on, Park Seo Jun’s Min-sung, a civil servant who feels overwhelmed by the current state of the world, and his wife Myeong-hwa, played by Park Bo-young, who is a nurse and who is desperately clinging on to her humanity as the world gets fiercer and meaner.

Center Lee Byung hun as Young tak

Lee Byung-hun is delivering a magnificent performance of an ordinary man who is thrust with so much power. We can literally see his character change as he starts to enjoy the power and adoration he gets from the leadership position he now holds. Lee shows off his magnificent range here and is able to convey his character’s darkest corners with physically transforming on screen when his character starts to get drunk with power.

    Concrete Utopia poster 2

On the flip-side, Park Bo Young serves as the moral compass of the film. She is witness to the discrimination and bullying that is happening within the system and as much as she wants to fight against it, she’s also feeling alone in a world that has become worse during survival mode.

    Still press still 07 1

But while Lee and Park are doing excellent portrayals of these typical characters in such events, it’s Park Seo Jun’s Min-sung that is the most textured and refreshing to see. We’ve seen Park Seo Jun from common and brusque as he was in ‘Midnight Runners’ and ‘Fight for My Way’ and we’ve also seen him in refined and elegant and powerful like in ‘What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim?’ and ‘She Was Beautiful.’ Min-sung is a whole new character for Park, who invokes a sense of the everyman in Min-sung. He is unambitious and unassuming. He wants to be just below the radar and while he is determined to protect his family – Myeong-Hwa – he also doesn’t want to rock the boat too much. It’s a layered performance that isn’t as flashy as Lee Byung-hun but it helps truly sell the film’s premise of a world succumbing to darkness and how people just give in to stay alive.

Park Seo jun as Min sung 1

Boasting of fantastic special effects scenes of the destruction of Seoul, director Um Tae-hwa adeptly balances the larger, more spectacular aspects of his story with the more tender, most intimate moments of the narrative. He easily switches from comic – sometimes even campy – to the deadly serious as the story unfolds and it keeps the movie interesting. After the initial eviction of the non-residents, a scene that is immensely tension-filled and riveting, the film then cuts to a portion much like a corny, AVP that shows life in the apartment building. It’s funny but also scary, when you feel the contrast between the images and the tone of the moment. It’s aspects such a these that keeps the film from falling completely within Western mainstream Hollywood disaster films.

Park Bo young as Myung hwa 1

It’s also incredible to see Park Seo Jun, the superstar of so many top Kdramas and movies, play someone so passive, so easily corrupted. He is torn between the seductive pull of Yeong-tak’s credo of survival and the love of his kind-hearted wife Myeong-hwa. Min-sung then becomes the fulcrum by which the film has the most to say.

    Still press still 13

‘Concrete Utopia’ hits all the necessary narrative beats to stay enjoyable and riveting throughout its rather dark and disturbing look at humanity but it also manages to say what it has to say about our human capacity for caring for others. It’s not subtle at all but it’s well-executed that it’s worth every penny.

As the trailer and poster speaks for themselves, the survivors will have to go through mind-boggling thought processes, revealing the kind and dark side of human nature. Find out with us in the cinemas who will be the final survivors.

    About Concrete Utopia

In Concrete Utopia, the world has been reduced to rubble by a massive earthquake.

While no one knows for sure how far the ruins stretch, or what the cause of the earthquake may be, in the heart of Seoul there is only one apartment building left standing. It is called Hwang Gung Apartments.

As time passes, outsiders start coming in to Hwang Gung Apartments trying to escape the extreme cold. Before long, the apartment residents are unable to cope with the increasing numbers. Feeling a threat to their very survival, the residents enact a special measure.

In cinemas September 20, Concrete Utopia is distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Connect with the hashtag #ConcreteUtopiaMoviePH
