  • The King is Gone, Long Live the Black Panther: A Review of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is a movie about loss and grieving. The loss of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa feels, in the movie’s reality, like the loss of a certain sense of nobility and grace that lit up this corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wakanda is grieving. This movie is grieving and it is ambitious in how it takes all that grief and turns it into this epic movie about moving forward from loss, a movie about leaders and rulers of superpowered nations during this dark and turbulent era of human civilization.

Make no mistake, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ still continues its dialogue about imperialism and the threat of colonialism but this time pushes it forward about discussing the concept of retaliation.

Running at 161 minutes, almost three hours long, the film’s first two hours is an exploration of the fictional kingdom of Wakanda at a state of loss. T’Challa has passed and his mother Queen Ramonda (played with such a commanding presence by Angela Basset) has reclaimed the throne in the absence of a ruler. His sister Shuri (played by Letitia Wright) is dealing with her grief by turning towards her technology. As Queen, Ramonda must push back against other countries, who want access to Vibranium, the precious resource that has made Wakanda into the advanced nation that it is in that world. Shuri, on the other hand, must rationalize how all her intelligence and affinity to science were not able to save her brother’s life.

In the middle of all of this, the search for Vibranium outside of Wakanda goes into full swing and what it uncovers is another nation altogether with access to the precious mineral, one that is just beneath the surface and equal to (or maybe even more powerful) than Wakanda in strength. This is the nation of Talocan, under the rule of Namor (played with great duality by Tenoch Huerta) and he has kept his underwater nation secret for hundreds of years and this sudden global interest in Vibranium has forced Namor’s hand.

In 161 minutes, the film must deal with the state of Wakanda without a Black Panther and the pressure from other nations to gain access to Vibranium, but it also introduces us to the enigmatic Namor and the nation of Talocan and how they deal with Wakanda, the only country that shares their fears and anxieties. The film also has to introduce a new character, Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), a brilliant young scientist who is a parallel to Shuri’s story in every way, and Shuri’s own way of reconciling her loss.

What unfolds is an epic-scale story about rulers and superpowered nations and how the choices of one person can lead to the ruin of so many. As seen in the trailer, the film leads up to a battle (let me say this: it’s not just a battle, it’s a war) that shapes and molds the return of a new Black Panther and what it means to protect a powerful nation.

Pervading through every scene is a commentary on imperialist states like America and France, bringing to mind their imperialist history and the pressure that they (and other world leaders) are pressing on Ramonda, Wakanda, and inadvertently Talocan, the dialogue regarding colonialism returns. What are other nations to do in the face of such pressure?

    Black Panther Wakanda Forever 2
Photo: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer

This is not just a superhero movie. Just like the previous film before this sequel, this is an image of fighting back against colonial power (it’s no accident that Talocan, which was called Atlantis in the comics, was inspired and based on Meso-American culture; they speak the Mayan language and interpolate Meso-American design and culture) and it is also a character study. Shuri, Ramonda, M’Baku (Winston Duke, who does an amazing job of adding more layers into his character), Okoye (Danai Gurira, who is given enough screen time and narrative elements to add new dimensions to Okoye), and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o, whose presence adds a profound depth to the story) all must deal with their grief and use the superhero narrative as a means to channel that anger somewhere.

It’s when the film reverts back to its comic book genre that it slows down and unravels. There is a mighty battle scene at the end that feels like it is a necessary item on a checklist for MCU movies that can undermine the heaviness of the themes of the film. It would have worked better had the film been PG-13 (or even R-13) so that the violence can be justified by how much stronger it could amplify the geopolitical ramifications of these two nations coming to war.

This is a dark film with dark themes and it could have really dug itself into that mold more (and there would have been an appropriate space for it) if it didn’t have to be so family-friendly.

Its ties to the MCU is what holds back Ryan Coogler’s vision and ambition of channeling the loss of such a figure like the fictional T’Challa (or the real-life Chadwick Boseman) into a commentary about how dark and greedy this world has become and how one moves forward from it.

Nevertheless, as MCU films go, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is another testimony that superhero films can, every now and then, feel important and relevant. It is proof that you can step out of the formula and still deliver something that is mainstream and enjoyable.

  • Film Facts: 5 Things to Know About ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

Once again, we are about to hear Wakanda’s powerful battle cry in cinemas when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever releases in Philippine theaters this November 9. As the trailer revealed, there’s a lot of change in the African kingdom with their king gone, and a war brewing against the Talocan. But the question remains, who will protect Wakanda now?

Check out the trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever below:

Before Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters this week, we’ve rounded up a few facts about the movie that you might want to know. Check them out below:

On filming the sequel without Chadwick Boseman

After the passing of Black Panther‘s lead star, Chadwick Boseman, in 2020, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that they will not use CGI or recast T’Challa back into the MCU. Feige then recently shared with Empire that the recasting “felt like it was much too soon,” adding that “The world is still processing the loss of Chad. And Ryan [Coogler] poured that into the story.”

Meanwhile, Letitia Wright also talked about filming without her onscreen brother. “I will always have moments [of doubt] on set, and I’ll be like, ‘Oh man, I don’t know if I can do this’,” Wright told People. “I could just hear [Boseman] be like, ‘Sister, you’re great. You got this. I’m proud of you.’ That really just kept me moving forward.”

    A new Black Panther

The trailer has also revealed that a new heroine takes up the mantle of the Black Panther. While the identity of the new Black Panther has not been explicitly revealed, fans speculate it to be Letitia Wright’s Shuri, the younger sister of T’Challa and the Princess of Wakanda. Aside from being next in line in the royal family, Shuri’s Black Panther is also canon in the comics, as she took up the mantle when her brother was in a coma. The official poster for the film also puts Shuri front and center, possibly hinting at the new hero’s identity.

The MCU’s take on Namor and Atlantis

After Killmonger’s rebellion and their battle with Thanos’ army, the next threat looming over Wakanda is a war against Namor. In the comics, Namor is actually a hero and the king of Atlantis but in the MCU, the character played by Tenoch Huerta debuts as an antagonist and his kingdom will instead be called the Talocan– a nation that is inspired by Aztec mythology. Despite these changes, those familiar with the comic book character will still see one of his most curious abilities in the comics brought to life on the big screen, which is flying with little wings on his feet.

    Introducing Ironheart

The MCU continues to set up young heroes including Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, and America Chavez. Another young superhero is also introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever— Riri Williams also known as Ironheart, who will soon have her own MCU series. In the comics, Ironheart was an engineering student who recreates the Iron Man suit and receives guidance from an AI Tony Stark. As for the MCU, it appears that Ironheart may not be as tied to Stark, but Shuri and Wakanda will play a role in the new hero’s origins.

The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack

The first trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever emphasized the effect of music in a film, with Tem’s rendition of No Woman No Cry making the trailer even more emotional. For the film’s full soundtrack, Rihanna returns with ‘Lift Me Up’, a tribute to Chadwick Boseman. The soundtrack also includes music from Future, Burna Boy, Stormzy, Fireboy DML, Ckay, E-40, PinkPantheress, Rema, Snow Tha Product, Tobe Nwigwe, and more.

  • WATCH: The Next Black Panther Revealed in New ‘Wakanda Forever’ Trailer

Marvel Studios has finally given us a good look at the next Black Panther in the new trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

After the passing of lead actor Chadwick Boseman back in 2020, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said that they will not recast or use CGI to bring T’Challa back on the big screen. In the first teaser for the sequel, it was then hinted that a new hero dons the Black Panther cowl, and it has now been fully confirmed in the new trailer.

    Check it out below:

The new trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever not only gave us a closer look at the film’s villain Namor and the Talocan people, as well as the debut of Ironheart’s suit, but it also gave the fans a complete look at the new, female Black Panther.

While the trailer didn’t really disclose who it was under the mask, fans were quick to assume that it was Shuri inside the new suit. Not only is she next in line as the ruler of Wakanda, it is also comic book canon that T’Challa’s younger sister took the mantle of the Black Panther when her brother was in a coma.

Letitia Wright reprises her role as Shuri, alongside Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, and Martin Freeman. Also joining the cast are Tenoch Huerta as Namor and Dominique Thorne debuting as Ironheart.

Director Ryan Coogler also returned to direct the sequel. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is coming to Philippine cinemas on November 9.
