    The countdown has officially begun.

Apple TV has unveiled a first look at Star City, the highly anticipated eight-episode drama from award-winning creators Ben Nedivi, Matt Wolpert, and Ronald D. Moore. Rewriting History—From the Other Side

At the heart of Star City lies a fascinating “what if.”

In this alternate-history retelling, the Soviet Union becomes the first nation to land a man on the moon. But instead of revisiting familiar ground, the story unfolds from behind the Iron Curtain—offering a suspenseful and emotionally charged look at the people who made that historic leap possible.

Brilliant cosmonauts chasing glory. Determined engineers racing against time. Intelligence officers embedded within the program, navigating secrecy and suspicion. All of them risking everything to propel humankind forward.

Layered with paranoia and political tension, Star City is more than a space drama. It’s a character-driven thriller about loyalty, ambition, sacrifice, and the human cost of progress. Suspended between triumph and fear, its characters confront impossible choices in a world where one misstep could alter history forever.

    An Olivier Award-Winning Revival

It sold out consecutive engagements in London before launching major tours across the UK, North America, and Australia.

The Guardian called it “A gorgeous, thrilling, heavenly musical.”
The Daily Telegraph declared, “Hallelujah! An almighty revelation.”

    Now, Manila gets its turn.

    Why This Musical Still Resonates

Featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the show first exploded onto the scene in the 1970s as a concept album before opening on Broadway in 1971. The original London production ran for over eight years, becoming the longest-running musical in West End history at that time.

Told entirely through song, the story explores the final days of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. It examines loyalty, power, faith, and doubt, all set to a rock score that still feels urgent decades later.
Iconic songs like “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and “Gethsemane” continue to captivate new generations of audiences.

Under the direction of Timothy Sheader and choreography by Drew McOnie, this production strips the story down to its emotional core while amplifying its theatrical intensity. Design is by Tom Scutt, with lighting by Lee Curran and sound design by Nick Lidster, ensuring a visually arresting experience inside Solaire’s state-of-the-art theatre.

The Manila engagement of Jesus Christ Superstar runs from May 2 to May 31, 2026 at The Theatre at Solaire. No further extensions will be added.

Tickets are available exclusively through TicketWorld.

Presented by GMG Productions, the Manila season forms part of the major 2026 international tour produced by GMG Productions and David Ian for Crossroads Live and Work Light Productions. The original production was produced by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to book, this is it. A globally celebrated revival. A powerhouse international cast. And a Filipino star stepping into one of musical theatre’s most beloved roles.

May is shaping up to be unforgettable.

  • Meet the Lead Stars of Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 4 as PETA Unveils Cast

Meet the Lead Stars of Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 4 as PETA Unveils Cast

The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) officially announces the headlining cast of Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 4: Oh Sh*t! It’s Live Sa Cheter! running from June 19 to August 16, 2026, at the PETA Theater Center.

From two iconic films to a hit series, Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank has become beloved for its hyperreal, meta commentary on arts, culture, and society. The first film skewered the indie movie scene, the second tackled mainstream cinema, and the third confronted historical revisionism. This fourth installment turns its sharp gaze toward theater, but it doesn’t just peek behind the curtain; it tears it down entirely, exposing the messy, hilarious, and painfully relatable process of making theater in the Philippines today.

    ANDOY RANAY

At the center of the mayhem is Eugene Domingo, returning as a gloriously amplified version of herself—navigating ego, ambition, and the beautiful absurdity of mounting a live show. Long celebrated for her fearless comedic brilliance, Domingo once again anchors the franchise with razor-sharp wit and impeccable timing.

    JC SANTOS
    EUGENE DOMINGO

Joining her is a powerhouse lineup of theater-makers, all portraying exaggerated reflections of their real-life roles in the industry. Meann Espinosa, Stella Cañete-Mendoza, Andoy Ranay, and JC Santos step in as unapologetic artistas caught in the whirlwind of creative clashes and theatrical excess.

    MEANN ESPINOSA

Behind the scenes—but very much in front of the live audience—is Melvin Lee as the ever-resourceful (and ever-stressed) producer attempting to keep the production afloat. Marlon Rivera, who directed the franchise’s first three installments, steps into the chaos as the director within the play, while Joshua Lim So takes on the role of the resident playwright caught between revisions, rewrites, and relentless creative debates—desperately trying to keep his script, and his sanity, intact.

    JOSHUA LIM SO

The show is written by Chris Martinez, the creative force behind the first three Septic Tank installments. It will be directed by Maribel Legarda, who helmed PETA’s hit productions Rak of Aegis and One More Chance The Musical, with assistance from up-and-coming director Johnnie Moran.

Set and costume design is by Gino Gonzales, with music and sound design by Teresa Barrozo.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Reimagines a Horror Icon with Fierce Agency and Emotional Power in “The Bride!”

    A Cultural Icon—Finally Given a Voice

It all began with a spark of curiosity.

While attending a party, Academy Award nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal noticed a tattoo of the Bride of Frankenstein. Instantly, a question formed: How had a character with barely any screen time become such a lasting symbol in pop culture?

“I saw this tattoo of the Bride of Frankenstein at a party and I thought, “Something about this character has captured our culture,’” says Academy Award nominee Gyllenhaal. “And I then went back and watched the movie [“Bride of Frankenstein” (1935)]  for the first time, because I had never seen it, and I found it really interesting that she’s not really in it. I will say Elsa Lanchester makes a real impact. I mean, she’s in it for three minutes, but she has somehow taken the culture by storm. But to be honest, she doesn’t talk. She doesn’t speak. She doesn’t get an opportunity to express herself. And I thought it was an interesting puzzle. This guy [Frankenstein] understandably is so lonely looking for a mate. But then, just anyone will do, and bringing someone back who doesn’t have any agency herself. So, what happens if you take that same format, that same story, but you give her a huge amount of agency, and give her a huge amount of need, and intelligence, and soulfulness, and vulnerability, and power? Then what happens? That seemed like a puzzle worth getting into.”

That absence became the seed of something bold.

What if the Bride had agency? What if she possessed intelligence, vulnerability, longing, and immense power? What if she wasn’t simply created to cure someone else’s loneliness—but had desires of her own?

With The Bride!, Gyllenhaal transforms that compelling question into an electrifying cinematic experience.

    Watch the trailer here:

A Revolution Born in 1930s Chicago

Set against the gritty backdrop of 1930s Chicago, The Bride! follows a lonely Frankenstein (Academy Award winner Christian Bale) who seeks the help of groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious, played by five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening.

Together, they revive a murdered young woman.

    And the Bride is born.

But what unfolds is far from the obedient companion Frankenstein imagined. Instead, she emerges as a force—complex, searching, alive with purpose. What follows spirals into murder, possession, a radical cultural movement, and a volatile romance between two outsiders trying to define love on their own terms.

Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is a daring reinvention that pulses with urgency and emotion.

    Jessie Buckley’s Fierce Transformation

Taking on the titular role is Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley, whose magnetic performance promises to leave audiences shaken and inspired.

“It’s intense. It’s a wild abandoned life force. It’s passion on the brink. It’s a revolution. It’s a new language!” Buckley says.

This Bride refuses to settle for half-truths or half-love. Reborn into a fractured world, she demands autonomy and authenticity. She seeks not just connection—but the full story.

“It’s giving voice to The Bride who has never been given a voice before. She’s not satisfied to just be reinvigorated as mate. She wants autonomy of the self. And goes on a journey to discover herself in this world so she can be fully in a relationship with Frank. She wants the full story. She can’t be in a relationship that’s half-full. She wants the whole truth, because I think once she’s reborn, she demands absolute life, and absolute love. And it isn’t perfect. It’s a risk, y’know to live and love like that! Our potential to do all sorts of things is huge, and the bride and frank do some fucked up things. But it isn’t without consequence.”

And that kind of living? It comes with risk.

Flawed, unpredictable, and fiercely human, the Bride’s journey becomes a powerful exploration of identity, desire, and consequence.

Crafted for IMAX, Designed for the Heart

Though epic in scope, Gyllenhaal made one thing clear: spectacle would serve emotion—not overshadow it.

“Instead of having it be only this big world-building set piece, or this big action sequence, we instead decided to grow where it made sense emotionally,” says Gyllenhaal in a new IMAX featurette for the film.

The film’s expanding frame mirrors the emotional shifts of its characters, creating a visceral experience that feels deeply immersive.

“We built the expanding of the frame to coalesce with emotional shifts and changes. You feel it, like in your chest. It’s got the roller coaster aspect that I think IMAX offers. But then it has this other aspect of cracking open your heart… It’s trippy.”

Christian Bale echoes the excitement: “I can’t wait to see that.”

A Visionary Team Behind the Scenes

Director of photography Lawrence Sher, production designer Karen Murphy, editor Dylan Tichenor, music supervisor Randall Poster, Academy Award-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, and costume designer Sandy Powell all contribute to the film’s distinctive visual and emotional language.

The film also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, and Oscar winner Penélope Cruz.

Produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman Keren, with executive producers Carla Raij, David Webb, and Courtney Kivowitz, the film is presented by Warner Bros. Pictures in collaboration with First Love Films and In The Current Company.

A Bold Cinematic Event Arrives March 2026

THEATER REVIEW: The Sandbox Collective’s ‘Spring Awakening’

Written by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, Spring Awakening is a rock musical that grapples with the collision of the youth’s awakening to maturity – questioning authority, discovery of sex and desire, and finding one’s own strength and identity in a society that demands conformity. Set in the late 19th-century Germany, in a town with very conservative traditions and beliefs. It’s rebellious. It’s in-your-face (with songs titled The Bitch of Living and Totally Fucked). It’s angry. It’s bleak, though it ultimately ends with a song of hope.

The play follows a group of teens in 19th-century Germany – Melchior, Wendla, Moritz, Martha, and Ilse – as they hit puberty, begin to discover their own sexual awakening, and start questioning authority. Melchior is well-read and a model student. He helps Moritz, who is having difficulty focusing in class, understand the changes in his body and explains sex to him. Wendla and the other girls their age are beginning to develop crushes on boys.

The grown-ups, however, would prefer the teens to do just as they say while the school heads would rather push Moritz out for lowering the school’s standards. As Melchior and Wendla grow closer, Moritz is kicked out, which sends him spiraling into a dark path similar to that of Ilse, who has left home to join an artist community. As the teens wake up to the darkness of their town, everything comes crashing down in an explosive way.

The Sandbox Collective’s production, directed by Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan, takes that energy and stages Spring Awakening with delightful verve.

I saw the open rehearsal a week before opening and then returned for the February 14 show, and they were very different productions.

Unlike the rehearsal, the performance felt very “performed,” probably due to having over-rehearsed. Many of the cast members sang beautifully, but their riffs and vocal prowess felt more suited to a concert than to a show. During the rehearsal, there was less bravado and more intention, each song sung to tell a story.

It’s probably opening weekend energy, but many were singing concert-style, and found myself missing the acting of it.

The women of the cast, however, were the stronger unit throughout the run. Led by Sheena Belarmino as Wendla, they moved in sync, creating some of the production’s strongest moments.

The giddiness of their sexual awakening as they talk about boys later flips into something when they sing about their desire for physical intimacy in the song Touch Me. In these moments, the women of the cast really bring out the tone and effect that the play feels like it is gunning for.

Aside from Belarmino, Angia Laurel is breathtaking as Martha. Her gorgeous voice stands out during her featured number The Dark I Know Well, right after nailing her scene when Martha admits that she is physically abused by her father. It’s a chilling performance that truly makes Laurel stand out.

The men seemed like a mixed bag. Some members of the ensemble played it young while others played it older, which felt off since many of the discoveries are those of teens just entering puberty. Others take a more mature approach and so, as a whole, they don’t feel as connected. Omar Uddin, who plays Moritz, is incredible. I’ve seen him both in the rehearsal and during the show run, and he grounds the entire play, as Moritz’s descent serves as the fulcrum for the play’s message. He captures the awkwardness and uncertainty of puberty, singing and dancing with his whole body. This is the third show I’ve seen him in, and he has consistently delivered a strong performance, each different from his last role. Uddin’s alternate, Nic Chien, I have not seen, but I’ve heard equally good things.

The show’s grownups are played by Audie Gemora and Menchu Lauchengco (with Ana Abad Santos as the alternate). All three (I saw Abad Santos at rehearsal and Lauchengco at the show) are superb, seamlessly shifting between roles as overprotective parents to strict and rigid teachers. While they do not have song numbers, their very presence in all their scenes elevates the moment.

The show really amplifies the tension between conservative authority and a growing, progressive youth. It’s so perfect for these times as our world still suffers under the threat of outdated traditions and beliefs. Nunoy Van Der Burgh’s choreography mirrors that, creating movements that almost feel modern but not, creating a link between 19th-century Germany and the present. Wika Nadera’s gorgeous set design is both stylistic as it is symbolic. An uprooted tree is suspended in the air, giving the impression that the foundations are not as solid as it seems. A platform, also suspended in the air, is lowered for certain scenes. It’s only as it lowers that you realise it’s in the form of a cross. The metaphor isn’t lost, though I wished the lighting could have hit it more from above so that the shadow would stretch across the stage throughout the scenes.

    Spring Awakening

This was my first time seeing Spring Awakening, despite it being a well-known, multi-award-winning show (the original Broadway production won eight Tony Awards), and I’m quite fascinated with the show and its straightforward portrayal of teenage angst and rebellion. It’s a dark, challenging play, and this production has what it takes to bring it to where it has to go. I’d love to see it again to watch the cast fully settled into their roles and hear their amazing harmonies all over again.
