A Colorful Cast of Human Suspects
Complementing the all-star voice cast is a dynamic lineup of human characters portrayed by an impressive ensemble: Nick Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, Emma Thompson, and more. Each character brings intrigue, humor, and a layer of suspicion to the unfolding mystery.
Nick Braun & Nicholas Galitzine: A Quirky Crime-Solving Duo
Nick Braun stars as Tim Derry, a well-meaning but clumsy police officer eager to prove his worth. Often underestimated, Tim sees the case as his chance at redemption.
“Tim is driven by the need to prove himself to a town that sees him as an incompetent cop,” says Braun. Luckily, the sheep help him come out of his shell and become the officer he’s meant to be.” He adds, “I always imagined that Derry didn’t just want to be a cop—he wanted to be a detective, but failed the exam. Solving this case becomes a kind of redemption, even if it’s just proving to himself that he’s capable—that he can get it right and save the town.”
Alongside him is Nicholas Galitzine as Elliot Matthews, an ambitious reporter chasing his first big story. Together, the unlikely duo forms a partnership that’s as entertaining as it is determined.
“The buddy-cop movie is one of my favorite genres,” says Galitzine, “so getting to work with and learn from a comedic talent like Nick Braun was really fun.”
Rebecca Hampstead, portrayed by Molly Gordon, arrives in Denbrook under suspicious circumstances. Unknown to the townsfolk, she is George’s estranged daughter—a revelation that instantly places her under scrutiny.
“Rebecca was a delicious challenge,” says Gordon. “She’s set up as a suspect from her entrance, which gave me so many fun opportunities to toy with the audience’s expectations and interpretations. I spent a lot of time thinking about how certain looks or movements could be read. I’d never done a mystery before, let alone one where I’m the prime suspect, so I had so much fun getting to play.”
Hong Chau: The Enigmatic Innkeeper
Beth Pennock, played by Hong Chau, shares a tense history with George. Their long-standing feud raises questions—could it have turned deadly?
“As an actor, it’s fun to play a character who has a secret—it gives you something to chew on and layer into each scene,” says Hong Chau. “You don’t immediately know Beth’s full backstory. It’s more compelling to reveal who she is through what she wears, how she looks and how she carries herself.”
Emma Thompson: Authority Enters the Scene
As Lydia Harbottle, Emma Thompson commands attention as the poised and powerful lawyer tasked with reading George’s will. Arriving in a limousine, she immediately signals that something significant is about to unfold.

Violinist and music educator Kaya Mendoza, one of the many scholars of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), found her fondness for melodies within the confines of the classroom. Over time, it developed into an intentional pursuit; one that gave her direction, duty, and profound purpose.
Finding the harmony between performing and teaching
As early as nine years old, Mendoza had already been playing the violin, thanks to a group class part of her curriculum at the Kolisko Waldorf School, headed by Ford Pundamiera.
While finishing her studies at Philippine High School for the Arts in Makiling, Laguna, under the mentorship of Sergio Esmilla and Gina Medina-Perez, Mendoza’s connection with music deepened, finding herself yearning for more. Later on, she pursued music education at the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) and profoundly examined her love for her craft. She is currently a student of Dino Decena.
“It’s just nice to connect with other people through music,” she said, recalling a performance in Kuala Lumpur along with the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth.
Through the years, Mendoza has performed with renowned orchestras, including the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra in 2020 and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra back in 2023. While actively performing in orchestras and freelance engagements, she began sharing her knowledge on music, navigating both spaces with equal passion and commitment.
When the COVID-19 pandemic halted live performances, Mendoza transitioned to virtual concerts and volunteered in online workshops, such as the CCP’s Hands-On Choral Workshop. She continued to facilitate workshops and classes in person even after the world slowly recovered. “I really wanted to teach. Na-inspire kasi ako sa sarili kong music education and sa mga teachers ko,” said Mendoza.
Performing and playing the violin perfectly filled Mendoza’s innate need to mentor students by sharing her personal experiences. “‘Pag nagpe-perform ka, may natututuhan ka na mapapasa mo sa students,” said Mendoza, who describes herself as a lifelong student of music.
Mendoza’s humble perspective on learning naturally extended into her advocacy. Realizing that exposing people to music warrants a deeper appreciation, she never shied away from addressing the inaccessibility of music education. “I want to provide music education for all, regardless of background or status,” Mendoza declared bravely.
A scholar’s responsibility to give back
This commitment to teaching and sharing knowledge forms a core part of her advocacy as a CCP scholar. Beyond honing her craft as a performer, she actively seeks to give back by creating accessible learning spaces, mentoring aspiring artists, and sharing the values and discipline she gained through her own training.
This same sense of purpose also shaped how she viewed her own journey within the program. “I was really surprised to be accepted because I thought that the CCP scholarship is only given to students who have attained high artistic achievements,” shared Mendoza, recalling the surreal moment of receiving the news in 2021.
For Mendoza, her role as a scholar is not only about artistic excellence, but also about nurturing the next generation and contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable arts community. As a scholar supported by a public institution, Mendoza has a strong sense of duty to hone her talent. She became increasingly aware of the role she played, not just as a student, but as someone held accountable by the community:
“There are now high expectations and standards to uphold, because my education is funded by the taxpayers’ money. I want to give back to all the people who have supported me in pursuing music by doing well,” said the young scholar.
Thankfully, Mendoza has a steady support system, which consistently inspires and encourages her to believe in her potential. “That’s what helps me push through and continue doing what I can,” she admitted, commending how her family, peers, and mentors help her through the technical and emotional demands of the music industry.
From production work to workshop facilitation, Mendoza has expanded her involvement beyond performance and teaching. These experiences have allowed her to explore other dimensions of music.
Reflecting on her journey as a CCP scholar who performs and teaches music, Mendoza emphasized the art of knowing when to pause: “If you want to pursue music, it’s important to take care of yourself. The love and dedication to music and practicing go hand-in-hand with resting.”
In the future, Mendoza wishes to continue integrating music across disciplines after her capstone project, Titik at Tinig: A Workshop on Teaching Literacy through Music at the UPD. She also shared her dream of collaborating and sharing the spotlight with brilliant artists while treading her path to become a licensed professional music educator.
CCP scholar Mendoza answers her calling onstage and beyond
As she looks ahead, Mendoza remains committed to both aspects of her identity: as a performer and as an educator. What once sparked in the classroom has blossomed into a meaningful purpose that goes beyond personal achievement.
In pursuing teaching and performing, Mendoza spotlights music as a communal relationship, wherein the artist and audience exchange ideas and feelings by simply basking in harmonies. “I just love both [playing the violin and teaching],” she explained with a chuckle, finding the mere thought of giving up core parts of her identity absurd.
In many ways, Mendoza’s name perfectly encapsulates her journey as an artist and educator. Kaya, which translates to “can” in English, serves as clear validation of her ability to connect and grow through music.
It is now a quiet testament to the endless possibilities she holds in her future, too.

There is a profound embrace of poeticism in David Lowery’s Mother Mary. Amidst the fashionable, glamorous world of a pop star and her former costume designer and creative partner, lies a story of a friendship’s dissolution, one so devastating it leaves wounds capable of summoning specters of unsettled emotions. The film feels almost theatrical, from the dialogue spoken by Sam Anselm (portrayed by the disarming Michaela Coel) to the transitions Lowery uses to bridge the past and present. And as metaphors that take shape within the narrative, they thrust the film into an entirely different genre. It is fascinating as it is visually stunning.
Anne Hathaway stars as the titular pop icon, Mother Mary, who is about to make a comeback after a traumatic onstage accident. Exhausted, frustrated, shaken to her core by waves of emotion, she flies to England to visit the home of Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), a fashion designer, to ask for a dress for her comeback performance. But Mother Mary and Sam have a tortured past. Sam was once Mary’s costume designer and from rifling through their history, she was more than that: a creative partner, a foundational presence who was there from the beginning, and a friend.

Sam is cold and detached, yet she keeps Mother Mary talking, betraying her need for something from her. She takes on the job; to design and craft a dress in less than four days. And in the process, the two women hash out that moment when their friendship ended, when Mother Mary chose to replace her original circle with a new creative team behind her. It is at that point, an hour into the film, where the film shifts radically as Sam reveals that the pain of that parting led her to a supernatural encounter: a ghost.
Mother Mary Images courtesy of Creazion Studios
For the first hour, the film moves at a slow pace. Lowery focuses his lens on the very nuanced and layered conversations between Mary and Sam.
Mother Mary Images courtesy of Creazion Studios
Mary is visibly broken and desperate for connection, while Sam is keeping her cool, clearly reveling in the power of being needed. Sam’s dialogue are poetic, descriptive, and eloquent. Michaela’s English delivery and sharp English accent cast a hypnotic spell.
Mother Mary Images courtesy of Creazion Studios
In contrast, Anne Hathaway’s Mary is a broken person, her words are unfiltered, messy, and unrehearsed. This first half of the film functions almost like a stage play – a two-hander where the only action is the two characters navigating the past.
Mother Mary Images courtesy of Creazion Studios
Lowery keeps it theatrical, transitioning from present to the past with a movement of the camera to reveal the past right at the edge of the screen, coming into focus, and the character in the moment of remembrance enters into the frame to act out in the flashback. No cuts.
Mother Mary Images courtesy of Creazion Studios
Just one continuing movement allowing time and space to collapse into each scene. Though a decade has passed since their parting, the film suggests that the past is just a camera pan away. It is a visceral reminder that these events are still very real, very present, and very close to both two women.
Mother Mary Images courtesy of Creazion Studios
Occasionally, the film allows Mary to break into full performance, emphasizing that her stage persona is every bit a part of this story. The sharp contrast between the gothic, dark design of Sam’s workshop, and the searing bright lights of Mary’s world and massive crowds – jumping into some killer songs by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX (with Anne Hathaway herself sharing songwriting credits) – keeps the energy running while expanding the film’s themes into that of art and creation.
Mother Mary Images courtesy of Creazion Studios
The image of the pop artist is just as instrumental as the music and the performance. Sam was taken away from something she helped craft, and Mary, standing at this critical juncture in her career, realizes she must return to the source to truly move forward.
Mother Mary Images courtesy of Creazion Studios
When the ghost story emerges halfway through the film, Mother Mary fully embraces its Gothic mode. The narrative shifts to the horror genre, yet it remains firmly rooted in the one thing that both women are searching for: closure. The ghost is both literal and metaphorical, and the film adopts an air of whimsy that feels entirely earned, the emotions simmering throughout the film seemed destined for this.

Hathaway and Coel are incredible, creating two characters so distinct and lived-in that their relationship becomes the fulcrum of all of Lowery’s storytelling techniques. The theatricality, the extreme close ups, the music, and the seamless transitions – they are all there in service to Sam and Mary’s journey towards liberation. Both actors are so profoundly committed to the film’s whole vision that the narrative never feels silly or over-the-top.
Mother Mary Images courtesy of Creazion Studios
Mother Mary is a strange, little film but if you can ride its out-of-the-box presentation, it is a rare cinematic treat. At the very least, one can simply enjoy Anne Hathaway living her pop-star dreams, proving there is formidable diva within her that has finally found the perfect stage on which to shine.
There is a profound sense of genius in pairing Floy Quintos’ one-act plays, Evening at the Opera and Ang Kalungkutan ng mga Reyna, as a twin bill at this point in time. Played one after the other, director Dexter M. Santos reflects upon the insight that Quintos has on our political landscape: how class, social status, image and branding are all integral in our political landscape and, at the center of this, are women either struggling with power or at its periphery, supporting it, allowing it to shine.
The play opens with Evening at the Opera, where Miranda Beloto (Ana Abad Santos) is preparing to go out to watch an opera at the capitol. She engages in a dialogue with the spirit of her late mother (Frances Makil-Ignacio). Through their conversation, we can tell Miranda and her mother are “old rich” they are class, unapologetic elitists who come from a political dynasty and look down on Bingo’s humble origins and masa appeal of Miranda’s husband, Governor Bingo Beloto (Joshua Cabiladas).
Photo by Irvin Arenas | Encore TheaterPhoto by Irvin Arenas | Encore Theater
When Bingo finally takes the stage, Cabiladas and Santos have created a composite of popular politicos who hail from “humble origins” and amplify their tough guy machismo imagery. The moment Cabiladas enters and speaks his first line in a very brusque, heavily accented Filipino, the audience erupts in laughter. They get the satirical representation.
Photo by Irvin Arenas | Encore Theater
But Miranda is not entertaining any of his games – or his excuses for being late. What begins as a petty domestic argument quickly escalates into a battle for control and an exercise of power.
Photo by Irvin Arenas | Encore Theater
Both Miranda and Bingo are far from being victims of the corrupt system into which they were born into, they are its most active participants. And it’s so fitting that the one to watch the proceedings is one who has already passed and is witnessing posthumously the effect of that corruption on her child.
Photo by Irvin Arenas | Encore Theater
Evening at the Opera is funny and scary in equal measure. While the trio on stage creates a great spectacle of emotion, it is Ana Abad Santos who truly anchors the piece together, servings as the focal point of the other two characters. She’s spinning a figurative web, luring in her prey who is physically stronger and more prone to violence. Abad Santos dances through shifts in language, physical proximity, silence, and sudden raised voices to prove that she has more than just skin in the game. In this political charade of a marriage, she isn’t just Bingo’s equal; she is Bingo’s match in terms of political cleverness and sheer force of will.

Following the intermission, the hilarious Ang Kalungkutan ng mga Reyna shifts the focus to Yolanda and Marcel. Marcel de Alba (Topper Fabregas) is a hairdresser who has been called to the presidential palace for a private meeting with President Yolanda Cadiz (Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino), who has just declared Martial Law just hours prior. Yolanda has a radical dream: transforming the Philippine political system into a constitutional monarchy with herself as its Queen. To achieve this, she needs Marcel, a man of refined taste who has styled on the hair of princes and princesses from across the globe, to remake her into the image of the perfect Filipina royal.
Photo by Irvin Arenas | Encore Theater
The dialogue between Yolanda and Marcel explores and tackles the landscape of the Filipino people’s obsession with hierarchy, royalty, and celebrity. It alludes to our history of subjugation and our need for symbolic leadership. Throughout this exploration of Filipino social structure and political branding, And Kalungkutan ng mga Reyna, in the hands of Dexter M. Santos is unabashedly gay and utterly mines it for all its comedic gold. Buencamino and Fabregas share incredible chemistry, working out the dynamics of a powerful woman at the cusp of change, filled with power, who finds a kindred spirit with an artist who understands and can execute her vision; who is also afraid of being executed as he stands.
Photo by Irvin Arenas | Encore Theater
Together, these two plays are unafraid to tear down and speak plainly about what we need to address when we talk about politics in the Philippines. It illustrates – from the vantage point of those in power, the twin bill illustrates how class, wealth, and sophistication is used to establish authority and position hierarchies within our social system. These figures are not just players; they are complicit and they use our illiteracy against the majority who can be easily swayed by such displays. It would be so painful and cruel if it were not so true and so funny in its execution. Miranda & Yolanda is a brilliant piece of work that showcases incredible Filipino theatrical talent at its best while highlighting the singular genius of Floy Quintos, a voice we lost far too soon.
My Rating: 4 Stars
Miranda & Yolanda is a sharp-witted, devastatingly accurate mirror held up to Philippine society. It is a masterclass in satire that honors the legacy of Floy Quintos while proving that his words remain as urgent as ever. Catch this limited run by Encore Theater, it is a rare opportunity to see power stripped bare and dressed up all at once. Get tickets here.

Following the appointment of Jun Ji-hyun and Kôki, Hada Labo has officially announced the appointment of ANNA Tanaka, the Japanese member of the Gen Z girl group MEOVV, as its newest ambassador for the Asia-Pacific region, alongside the launch of a brand-new advertising campaign. The brand first released a teaser to give fans an early glimpse of ANNA’s many looks and her all-day hydrated glow. This will be followed by a music-video-style commercial starring ANNA, as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, perfectly capturing Hada Labo’s “confident, healthy skin” image through ANNA’s signature cat-like charm.

“Just Right” Radiance: ANNA Interprets a Pure and Confident Skincare Attitude

Hada Labo has always monitored product quality under the strictest pharmaceutical standards, offering consumers skincare choices they can truly trust. Guided by its “just right” philosophy, the brand’s full skincare range—from cleanser, lotion, and cream—caters to different skin needs by providing the exact right nourishment, avoiding excess and allowing skin to return to its most pure and stable condition.
This balanced approach reflects ANNA’s own charm—neither too much nor too little, but just right. She is unassuming yet radiant, natural yet captivating. Her naturally luminous skin and inner confidence align perfectly with the brand’s philosophy. ANNA also exudes a gentle yet determined presence, genuine and pure, embodying Hada Labo’s commitment to quality and essence. The radiance she shows on stage and in front of the camera comes from healthy, mochi-mochi skin, making her the ideal expression of the brand’s “just right” skincare philosophy.
Behind the 24-Hour Shoot: Cat Elements Add Extra Spark to an All-Day Glow
Earlier, ANNA made time to film the new Hada Labo campaign, showcasing an all-day hydrated glow on camera. Built around a “24 hours, 8x speed” concept, the commercial captures her changing from a youthful student look to a bright yellow dress, a pale blue elegant gown, and finally a sparkling, glamorous evening dress—all while maintaining delicate, luminous skin across every transformation. The campaign also introduces a mysterious cat character, appearing alongside ANNA and echoing MEOVV’s signature cat-inspired image. When cat elements meet Hada Labo’s pure and simple philosophy, the result is a visual that feels both lively and refined.

During filming, ANNA handled multiple wardrobe and scene changes with professionalism and poise, earning praise from the crew for her dedication. Even after long hours on set, her skin remained radiant and stable. She shared, “After I started using Hada Labo, I learned to give my skin only what it truly needs. The simpler it is, the more reassuring it feels, and my skin has become much more stable.”
ANNA added, “I’m really happy to become Hada Labo’s APAC ambassador. This is not only my first skincare endorsement, but also a brand I’ve always trusted! My teammates were also happy for me, and when they heard I was a little nervous before filming, they encouraged me a lot. I even shared Hada Labo masks with the members in the dorm, so we had a girls’ mask night!”
Speaking about a fun moment from the shoot, ANNA laughed, “It was really fun filming with the newly added cat character. Even though it wasn’t a real cat, I still had to pretend to interact with it, and sometimes act out scenes where it suddenly stole the spotlight. That was a real test of my acting!” Through this new campaign, ANNA presents 24-hour, non-stop radiance and shows everyone what truly comes from within: confident, healthy skin. It also marks a new chapter for Hada Labo, inviting every woman to discover her own just-right, mochi-mochi glow through simple, pure skincare.
