  • Catch the 34th Gawad Alternatibo at This Year’s Cinemalaya

The Ika-34 GAWAD CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video, or Gawad Alternatibo continues to showcase this year’s finalists of various films at the newly launched CCP Arthouse Cinema or Tanghalang Manuel Conde (TMC) this August 6-14, 2022.

This year’s theme, ‘GIYA – Tahakin at panoorin ang mga pelikulang giya ng ating panahon.’, showcases the ability of films to act as a guide for people as they navigate through life changes.  The theme emphasizes that “Memory and history have blind spots.  The ineffable escapes and defies language.  But film, where shadows lurk and tease darkness and light, will provide us the lens to sift through contradictions, will mark the limits of chaos, and serve as a beacon of a nation’s becoming.”

    GIYA prefinal 01

The 34th Gawad Alternatibo is held in four (4) main categories – Animation, Documentary, Experimental, and Short Feature.

There will be ten (10) entries for Animation, ten (10) for Documentary, eleven (11) for Experimental, and fifteen (15) for Short Feature.

Talkbacks will be held on August 6 for Documentary, August 7 for Experimental and Animation, and August 8 for Short Feature.  Exhibition sections such as the Curated List and Retrospective films feature the GAWAD Alternatibo Winners from 2020 to 2021.

The Gawad Alternatibo, established in 1987, is recognized as the longest-running independent film and video competition of its kind in Asia.  It is one of the main highlights of the 18th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, which also runs from August 5-14, 2022.  The Gawad Awards Night will be held on August 13 (Saturday), 2022 at 6:15 p.m. at the CCP Arthouse Cinema or TMC.

  • MaArte at The Pen is Back!

On the third weekend of August, from August 19 to 21, The Peninsula Manila welcomes back MaArte, the elegant fundraising bazaar that benefits the Museum Foundation of the Philippines.  The foundation’s mission is to raise funds and awareness for the National Museum of the Philippines and its network.

save the date study final ig with sponsors Large

MaArte had its beginnings in February 2009 as a complementary event to HABI, The Second ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium, a four-day international conference held in Manila.  As the conference’s Market Encounter, it allowed delegates the opportunity to appreciate and acquire Philippine textiles and jewelry.

Since then, MaArte has grown in scope and has undergone several iterations in various venues.  In 2017, it found a new home in The Peninsula Manila and has since been rebranded as MaArte at The Pen.

To date, MaArte at The Pen is a much-awaited event that celebrates Filipino craftsmanship. After two years of the COVID pandemic, the 2022 edition will bring back previous participants who offer a varied array of thoughtfully-made merchandise while introducing elements that signal the event’s emergence into a new normal.

The overarching theme of MaArte at The Pen 2022 is to celebrate the Filipino creative soul.

MaArte at The Pen 2022 will recognize not just traditional Filipino craft and design but also bring to the fore contemporary Philippine design in the fields of fashion, furniture, and accessories.

Philippine Art Events Inc., the group that owns and operates Art Fair Philippines and Art in the Park will run MaArte at The Pen 2022.  The event is supported by Major Sponsors Ayala Land Premier and BPI.

“We are glad to support an event that promotes Filipino craftsmanship and design, and at the same time provides our clients with special experiences and empowering financial solutions,” said Jenelyn Z. Lacerna, BPI SVP and Unsecured Lending and Cards, Product and Sales Head.

    slim exhibit announcement

A Special Exhibit:  SLIM at The Lobby

Salvacion Lim Higgins, known by the acronym Slim, was a fashion designer whose career began in post-World War II Manila, from 1947 until her passing in 1990. The first decade of her career is considered a golden era in Philippine fashion. She was known for creating some of the most avant-garde silhouettes of her time, both for evening gowns and ternos. Considered a master in her techniques of draping and embellishment, her beautiful creations have been the subject of a retrospective at the National Museum of the Philippines in 2009. In June of this year, the Philippine government recognized her with the distinction of National Artist for Fashion Design.

Slims MaArte at The Pen 2022

MaArte at The Pen puts together a vignette of ensembles by Slim featuring native influences such as jusi, cutwork embroidery, and raffia trimming. The dresses date from 1952 to the early 1980s and have been loaned from the archives of Slim’s Fashion & Arts School.  Nine of her fabulous creations will be on view at The Lobby from August 15 to 27, 2022.

Painter Mark Lewis Higgins, the late designer’s son who serves as the current Director of Slim’s Fashion & Arts School, will curate this special exhibit.

To spotlight the breadth of Filipino fashion design, this year’s bazaar works together with the PHx Fashion Group to introduce PHxMaArte, a section that will acquaint MaArte visitors with the next generation of Filipino designers.  They trumpet unconventional lines and global mindsets.  Among those debuting new collections in this section are BAGASÁO, NeilFelipp, and Kelvin Morales, labels coming off stints at Tokyo Fashion Week.   Jude Macasinag flies in Manifesto, recently presented for his bachelor graduation collection at the Institut Francais de la Mode in Paris.

The PHx Fashion Group also worked in consultation with fashion schools SoFA Design Institute and iAcademy, as well as the fashion design department of the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde to feature three graduates as part of the PHxMaArte selection.

    Apparel and Fashion Accessories

MaArte takes pride in the role it has played in propelling into the mainstream apparel brands that have advocated the use of traditional Filipino textiles.  Incorporating indigenous embroidery patterns and techniques into their merchandise are the hallmarks of MaArte at The Pen pioneers, brands like Filip+Inna and Good Luck Humans.   This year’s MaArte brings back these beloved labels, along with, among others, Rurungan Collective,  WYC Wear Your Culture, Two Chic, and Creative Definitions + Lakat Sustainables.

  • Exclusive Q&A: ‘Incantation’ Director & Stars On Mother Buddha, Avoiding Taboos, and More!

The Taiwanese horror film Incantation instantly became a hit when it dropped on Netflix, taking the viewers by storm with its creepy found-footage format and spine-chilling premise.

While it has been out for almost a month now, the title continues to gain popularity, especially with the TikTok crowd amplifying the viewers’ collective fear surrounding the film.

For the uninitiated, Incantation is a found-footage horror film that follows a woman named Ro-nan, as she tries to save her daughter from a deadly curse that she and her friends had unleashed years ago.

Netflix has given us a chance to virtually sit with the film’s director Kevin Ko, and its stars Tsai Hsuan-yen, who played the protagonist, Ro-nan, and Kao Ying-hsua who starred as Chi-ming, the counselor at the foster care center. Below are the highlights of the interview.

    Incantation 7

    The True Story Behind Incantation

Incantation further fuels the suspension of disbelief among viewers with their claim that the film is based on a true story. According to director Ko, the movie was inspired by an incident in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 2005 where a family was said to have been possessed by deities.

“When I heard about this situation in Kaohsiung, I wasn’t there to note much about it,” shared Ko. “It was something scary for me, that I didn’t want to know too much. So I wanted to keep the same feelings and same elements in the story of the film that you see.”

Meanwhile, the incantation and the Mother Buddha from the film were purely fictional according to the director, so you’d have less to worry about if you accidentally chanted with the film.

    The Horror of the Holes

The film is sure to disturb those with trypophobia and claustrophobia as holes seem to be a recurring theme in the film. Asked if it was deliberate, the director shared it was the idea of the unknown that comes with these holes, that he utilized to evoke fear among the viewers.

“When I was making the film, I was thinking about what was the most terrifying elements to people,” explained Director Ko. “And it is something invisible, intangible, and something unknown. So for example when you see the film, there’s a tunnel, it’s dark inside. You see the Mother Buddha, it’s dark inside, and you see the hole in their bodies. It feels like you may be sucked inside the hole, and realize that something may come out of the hole. This kind of unknowing is the more terrifying element in the film.”

    On Playing the Cursed

Actors Tsai Hsuan-yen and Kao Ying-hsua shared that the filming is not as scary as what we see on screen, or at least they didn’t feel it as they were focused on making the film convincing to the audiences.

“When I was making the movie, I had two roles. I have to play the role, and at the same time, I needed to be the cameraman,” said Hsuan-yen. “So these roles kept me in balance on set. I tried to think about how to make it realistic and convincing in front of the camera.”

    Incantation 5

Ying-hsua agrees, adding that he did get scared when he finally watched the movie.

“When I read the script, when I was on set, I wasn’t terrified or scared. I just tried to make it very convincing. We wondered how many people would believe that it is true, and it turned out many people do believe it is true. So it was surprising to me, when I watched the film, I also felt kinda scared as well. I also had nightmares after watching the film,” the actor said.

    Treading Over Taiwan’s Taboos

While the film is fictional for the most part, the director and the cast also talked about how they were careful not to break real-life taboos when they were filming.

    Incantation 3

“We do have a lot of customs and religious taboos in Taiwan, especially in filmmaking,” said Director Ko. “We did have a lot of rituals and ceremonies before the filming process. We also have religious advisers on site to make sure that we do not break into any Taoist taboos. Also after filming, we would check if everyone is fine.”

As for the actress Hsuan-yen, she shared that she went to a famous temple in Taipei and got an amulet which she carried around during and after the filming. Meanwhile, Ying-hsua responded with: “I got my Lord Jesus so I got nothing to fear.”

What were your reactions when watching Incantation on Netflix? Did you also avoid their “Hou-ho-xiu-yi, si-sei-wu-ma… Hou-ho-xiu-yi, si-sei-wu-ma… Hou-ho-xiu-yi, si-sei-wu-ma…” chant? “We are excited to share this new product with our customers as it innovates such a popular flavor—normally offered as a rice dish with chicken and a la King sauce—into a snack that can be enjoyed on the go. Our customers love our savory pies, and this product is a great way to give them the same level of satisfaction through a whole new flavor experience!” stated Pam Reyes, Jollibee Assistant Vice President for Core and Complementary Products.

So if you’re craving something crispy, or craving something creamy, then enjoy the best of both worlds with Jollibee’s new Chicken a la King Pie! It is now available in all stores nationwide for only P59 (Solo), P99 (Value Meal with drink), P140 (Super Value Meal with fries and drink), and P175 (Trio).

You can also order it via delivery through the Jollibee Delivery App, JollibeeDelivery.com, #87000, GrabFood, and foodpanda. You may also order via Drive-Thru and Take Out.
