  • Fall of A Hollywood Mogul Based on True Events in Empowering Film “She Said”

The dangerously inspiring true-to-life journey of investigative reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey about the fall of one of Hollywood’s most powerful figures is immortalized for the big screen in Universal Pictures’ “She Said” that will open in Philippine cinemas on November 23.

An investigation that ignited a global movement – on Oct. 5, 2017, New York Times investigative reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey broke a page-one story that shook the entertainment industry and reverberated throughout the country: “Harvey Weinstein Paid Off Sexual Harassment Accusers for Decades.”  Two-time Academy Award® nominee Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman, An Education) and Emmy nominee Zoe Kazan (The Plot Against America, The Big Sick) star as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together broke one of the most important stories in a generation— a story that shattered decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood and impelled a shift in American culture that continues to this day.

Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein had long reigned as one of the movie industry’s most powerful figures. The winner of six best picture Oscars® and the producer of such films as Sex, Lies and Videotape, Pulp Fiction and Good Will Hunting, Weinstein was a man whose tremendous clout could easily make or break careers, and for years, Kantor and Twohey reported, he allegedly used that clout to harass and coerce women into sexual encounters.

In 3,321 carefully researched words, the journalists detailed previously undisclosed allegations of wrongdoing stretching back three decades. Their reporting was thoroughly documented through interviews with Weinstein’s current and former employees and film industry workers, as well as legal records, emails and internal documents from the businesses that the larger-than-life executive had run, Miramax and the Weinstein Company, both long-dominant brands in Hollywood. Their findings were unimpeachable. Through dogged perseverance and the cooperation of many courageous survivors and other brave sources, they had at last revealed the truth.

Wesley Holloway Jennifer Ehle Justine Colan in SHE SAID
Wesley Holloway, Jennifer Ehle, Justine Colan

A testament to the incalculable importance of investigative journalism, “She Said” details the journey of reporters and editors engaged in the unrelenting pursuit of the truth and highlights the courage of survivors and witnesses who chose to come forward to stop an accused serial predator from committing further harm. Together, their commitment and fortitude sparked a global conversation, helped propel the #MeToo movement, and fueled a reckoning of the system that had enabled him.

At its heart, She Said is an inspiring true story about people, many of them women, many of them mothers, who summoned the courage to speak out and seek justice, not just for themselves but for those in the future, both in the U.S. and around the globe. The film is a compelling, moving reminder of the power of individual people, armed with determination and grit, to, together, change the world.

  • New Takes On Filipino Lullabies In Himig Himbing: Mga Heleng Atin

THE Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) embarks on developing, showcasing, and promoting indigenous lullabies through HIMIG HIMBING: Mga Heleng Atin, to be launched on November 13, 2022, 4pm, at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater).

A project of the CCP Arts Education, through the Audience Development Division, Himig Himbing features eight music videos of lullabies from different regions of the country.  The project aims to reintroduce the Philippine indigenous lullabies to contemporary audiences and develop nurturers that are grounded in our Philippine songs and hele.

Sigrid Bernardo SA UGOY NG DUYAN
Sigrid Bernardo – UGOY NG DUYAN

Based on the research of ethnomusicologist Sol Trinidad and arranged by musical director Krina Cayabyab, eight filmmakers create their film interpretation of the featured lullabies, including “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan,” “Katurog na, Nonoy,” “Wiyawi,” “Aba-aba,” “Hele,” “Dungdungwen Kanto,” “Tingkatulog,” and “Ili, Ili, Tulog Anay.”

The filmmakers are: Sigrid Bernardo, Mes De Guzman, Law Fajardo, Teng Mangansakan, Thop Nazareno, Carla Ocampo, Milo Tolentino, and Alvin Yapan.

Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, a Tagalog lullaby composed by National Artist for Music Lucio San Pedro with lyrics by National Artist for Literature Levi Celerio, is often sung from the point of view of an adult feeling nostalgic about sleeping in the baby hammock with their mother.  The feelings from the singer’s emotional bearings run deeply in the melody, which is reiterated in this three-part arrangement with Bahana singing for the music track.

For this classic lullaby, filmmaker Sigrid Bernardo captures Filipino mothers and nurturers of all kinds across the world in this nostalgic documentary-style black and white music video.

Bicolano lullaby Katurog na, Nonoy is sung by one whom a little boy looks for to put him to sleep.  While a number of transcribed and published tunes with the same title, this particular folk song melody was popularized as a choral piece.  Phoebe Bitoon lends her voice to this lullaby.

For Katurog na, Nonoy – Filmmaker Alvin Yapan creates a dreamy fairytale-like music video where a young mother, who could also easily be a diwata, hums the lullaby – and approaches a closed banana heart.  As she touches it, the banana heart gently opens, revealing a baby.  Then, the scene changes, showing a fisherman casting his net into the stream of stars.  He draws in the banana leaf carrying the baby as it gets caught in his net.

    Alvin Yapan KATUROG NA NONOY
Alvin Yapan – KATUROG NA, NONOY

These imagistic parallels between babies and bananas are inspired from a collection of riddles by the late Bicolana literary historian and researcher Lilia Realubit.  While the fisherman comes from another Bicol folk song “Si Nanay, Si Tatay.”

Filmmaker Carla Ocampo takes on the traditional Kalinga lullaby Wiyawi. Often sung by caretakers (usually Cordilleran fathers), it describes the warm weather that makes the baby cry.  In some areas, the lullaby refers to the warmth given by the traditional babywearing, interpreting the lyrics as “Tahan na, halika’s ebanan (babywear) kita para mainitan ka.”  Its music and text were collected by Dr. Felicidad Prudente during her fieldwork and transcribed for publication in the book Antukin by publisher Tahanan. Additional research was provided by Direk Carla Ocampo and Kalinga Expert Benicio Sokkong.

    Carla Ocampo WIYAWI
    Carla Ocampo – WIYAWI

Sung by Bullet Dumas, the music video opens with a montage of the traditional Cordilleran home.  As the Kalinga father attempts to soothe his child, the viewers are transported in a dream where a higante, dressed like a king and carrying a sword, slowly reveals itself.

Aba-aba is a lullaby indigenous to Southern Mindanao, particularly sung by the indigenous group Subanon.  Its field recording was taken and documented by National Artist for Music Ramon Santos and is now accessible through the archives of UP Center for Ethnomusicology.

    Teng Mangansakan ABA ABA
    Teng Mangansakan – ABA-ABA

Filmmaker Teng Mangansakan envisions a Subanen mother being convinced by her two friends to seek greener pastures in the city.  As they leave, the mother is revisited by the memory of the river goddess cementing her resolve to stay in the Subanen homeland for her baby.  Music track is performed by Rolinda Gibaliga.

Hele is a lullaby from a 1986 field recording of Dr. Elena Mirano taken in San Mateo, Rizal.  The Tagalog song is sung by a caretaker to a child, with lyrics alluding to an afternoon nap.  In the music video, filmmaker Milo Tolentino created a visual narrative anchored on a tale of familial love and loss and reversal of role.  The lullaby, sung by Nica Del Rosario, gives voice to a woman’s statement of love to her child and spouse – a nurturing anthem that bounces back to soothe a debilitating grief that threatens a once loving bond.

    Milo Tolentino HELE
    Milo Tolentino – HELE

Aba-aba and Hele are both unpublished lullabies, and will be the first time they will be released apart from their field recordings.

Dungdungwen Kanto (translated as I Will Love You) is the first line of the Ilocano wedding song “Duayya ni Ayat (Lullaby of Love).  While mostly associated with weddings, it is also often sung as a children’s lullaby.

Sung by Abby Clutario and Joshua Cadelina, filmmaker Mes De Guzman’s animated music video features the quintessential rural Filipino household, where one can see a baby hammock flying over Ilocos’ iconic landscapes and landmarks.

    Mes De Guzman DUNGDUNGWEN KANTO
Mes De Guzman – DUNGDUNGWEN KANTO

Tingkatulog (Sleeping Time), a folk lullaby from the area of Bohol, gives a perception that the singer is someone other than the mother, mentioning that the child’s mother will return in the morning and relaying a curiosity about the mother’s whereabouts the whole night.

With JD Tena on vocals and Daniel Calingasan playing bandurria, filmmaker Thop Nazareno produces a loving story of two siblings trying to take care of each other in their mother’s absence.  Playing the mother is actress Yayo Aguila, with Marco Masa and Juharra Zhianne Asayo as the siblings.

A Visayan lullaby, Ili, Ili, Tulog Anay (Little One, Go to Sleep) is sung by a caretaker to a child and mentions a mother who is out buying bread.  Its music and text transcription were published in the book Folk Songs: Songs of the Visayas by Priscilla Magdamo.

    Law Fajardo ILIILITULOG ANAY
Law Fajardo – ILI-ILI, TULOG ANAY

Filmmaker Law Fajardo’s music video features the daily life and struggles of a family and shows a glimpse of the sugar cane workers’ routines in the barrio.  It focuses on women who strive to raise their children in the absence of their partner.  Coleen De Guzman and Nica Tupas perform the lullaby in Hiligaynon.

  • Never Too Late to Join the Glow Up Game with iWhite Korea Acne+

Blemish-free skin, clear skin, baby skin— call it whatever you like, good skin is always something to be desired. While not everyone is blessed with good genetics, patience and consistency with your skin care can bring a lot of wonders in the long run.

For those new to the world of skin care, and even for the seasoned ones, putting together a routine that fits your needs can be quite intimidating and challenging with so many things to consider, so many ingredients to know about, and so many brands to try. But it’s important to remember that each skin is different. Whether you choose to try the 10-step Korean method or go minimalist with just 3-steps, it’s important to pin down the basics, then explore. From there, go for whatever works for you.

    iWhite Korea Acne Face Wash

START WITH A CLEAN BASE: CLEANSE

There’s a reason cleansing comes first– it rids your skin of the day’s gunk, oil, and other unwanted debris to prepare your skin for the good stuff. iWhite Korea’ Acne+ Facial Wash helps fight against acne and blackheads by detoxifying the pores and clearing impurities. This is done with the help of wonder ingredients Tea Tree Extract known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and Salicylic Acid that helps regulate sebum production and skin renewal. But a facial wash just doesn’t clean, it should also be gentle enough not to strip the skin and this product does just that. If you’re looking for a good cleanser that helps protect your skin barrier and retains moisture, this is the one for you.

    iwhite Korea Toner

PREP AND PRIME: ACNE+ TONER ESSENCE

Now that your skin is squeaky clean, it’s time to tone. Think of this step as a boost to help your skin absorb all of the good ingredients for maximum effect. And what’s great is that iWhite Korea’s Acne+ Toner Essence is both a toner and an essence, giving your toning step an extra boost. Toners are used to balance skin pH, while essences give your skin more hydration, hitting two birds with one stone.

The Acne+ Toner Essence is formulated with Centella Asiatica (Real CICA) extracts, Tea Tree Leaf water, and is enhanced through Memory Gel Technology that helps repair your troubled skin, and control oil/sebum build-up.Staying true to Korean skincare’s priority on hydration, this product is also alcohol-free. Keep in mind that some toners contain alcohol and can potentially strip your natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.iWhite Korea makes the product choice easy for you.

    iWhite Korea Acne Moisturizer

LOCKED AND LOADED: ACNE + AQUA MOISTURIZER

Moisturizers are probably one of the most important basic products in skin care. They are meant to hydrate and lock in the nutrients from your previous products. You might think that all moisturizers are the same, but some work better for certain skin types much like any

other product. To help your skin hydrate, iWhite Korea’s Acne+ Aqua Moisturizer is light on the skin thanks to its water-based formula, and can be used  both in the morning and at night. Packed with Centella Asiatica extract, Aloe Vera, and Cabbage Leaf extract, this  product will help smoothen, nourish and strengthen your skin for that bouncy and dewy feel.

    INGREDIENTS MATTER

When it comes to skincare, always choose the products that complement your skin, with formulas and ingredients backed by science. It pays to read the label since many beauty products contain preservatives or chemicals that could irritate or dry out your skin. If you have sensitive skin, make sure to do a patch test– place a pea-sized amount of product behind your ear or along your jawline, and wait a day or two to make sure that you will not react before applying it to your whole face.

It’s important to remember that achieving flawless, smooth, and glowing skin is a combination of taking care of it from inside and out. Rest your body, get good sleep every night, manage your stress, and eat healthily.

Most importantly, as iWhite Korea would always say, remember to take care of yourself first– – I, First.

For more information, visit iwhitekorea.com.ph or iWhite Korea’s official Facebook page and Instagram page. Available in all major supermarkets, grocery stores, convenience stores, department stores, drugstores, and pharmacies nationwide. • International Students Expo Now Going on Nationwide at Fil-Global Immigration Services

A nationwide Roadshow featuring opportunities awaiting college students and students who just graduated from Senior Highschool is ongoing around the country as of this writing.

In the Expo, universities and colleges from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US, and other countries in Europe and North America send their representatives to present and discuss the benefits of studying in their schools, many are also offering full or partial scholarships to qualified students.

Fil Global staff getting ready for the registration of participants to the Students

There are more than 200 Partner colleges and universities of Fil Global in Canada and Australia alone. The likes of Niagara College with several campuses around Canada, NorthWest University in Vancouver, Arburtus College and Ascenda, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Centennial College in Vancouver, North Island College in Courtenay, British Columbia, North Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Ryerson University in Toronto, Canadian College of Technology and Business in Vancouver, are but just the few that are mentioned.  In Australia, some of the Fil Global school partners are: Blue Lotus College in Melbourne, School Forms International College of Advanced Education in Darwin, Kapan Business School in Adelaide, Kingston University in Melbourn, Queensford College in Brisbane, Stanley College in Perth, Western Sydney College in Paramatta, S. Wales, and many more.

Western Sydney College partners with Fil Global Managing Director Bertch Ian Ranis and Finance Director Joseph Red Basa

Major Take aways from Fil Global’s School Partners during the Students’ Expo are valuable information on each of the school’s course offerings, tuition fees, potential scholarships, in campus living facilities, if any, and other relevant matters that may affect an international student’s life within the parameters of their institution.

Fil Global itself, as an Immigration Service agency, has general advice an aspiring student applicant should never take for granted. Some of these are: 1) Avoid errors in your application. All information required must be filled out correctly and completely; 2) Never attempt to submit fake or falsified documents as embassy officers are highly trained in document verification. Serious consequences may ensue If some of your documents are found untrue or saddled with questionable elements; 3) Give enough time in preparing your application. Rushing your submissions may be prone to errors that will be too difficult to correct. This may unnecessarily prolong your application process or may even cause worse consequences; and 4) Prevent delays by submitting required additional or supporting documents ASAP.

At present, the nationwide expo has already been done in Manila, Cabanatuan, Davao, Cavite, Tagaytay, Tagum, Cebu, Bohol, Baguio, Batanggas, Pampangga, Laguna, Naga, Taytay, Cabanatuan, Surigao, and Gen Santos.  Many more are coming up: one is happening in Bacolod on October 23, Malolos, Bulacan on Oct 25, Siquijor on Nov 11, Tacloban on Nov 12, Ormoc on Nov 19, Zamboanga on Nov 19, in Boracay on Nov 25, Tacloban Nov 26, Manila on Dec 3, and in other parts of the country on some future dates. Filipino Students interested to study abroad may wish to attend these upcoming events in any of these venues near their homeplaces.

In the last event held in General Santos City on September 25, 2022, more than 250 participants attended, and more than 50’% of this number proceeded to the consultations after the program. It was capped with fun and exciting elements like a Wine and Cheese platter, games and trivia, and raffle draws. The Expo in GenSan was preceded by the Ogie Alcasid and Giselle Sanchez concert the night before with Fil Global as a major sponsor.

This time, only 6 months from March-April this year when travel began to open up again after the pandemic, almost 200 students have already received their visas through Fil-Global Immigration Services and have either left or are about to leave the country to attend their respective college or university in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and other countries.

Fil-Global Immigration Services Corp is the top-of-mind immigration service agency in the Philippines and is the only one with an ISO certification.
