  • A Radiant Ceremony for the 2nd Gador Awardees

A radiant ceremony for the 2nd Gador Awardees was mounted at the newly built Tagum City Cultural Center Theater last November 5, 2022.  The Gador Award is a recognition program for outstanding artists, cultural administrators and organizations in Mindanao initiated by the Kaisa sa Sining (KSS) Mindanao network of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and facilitated by the CCP Cultural Exchange Department (CED).

The 13 recipients of the 2nd Gador Award are Dr. Christine G. Ortega (literature/cultural administration, Iligan City); Dr. Helen Tejero (music, Iligan City); Francisco Englis (music/Iligan City); Ronolfo “Popong” Landero (music/Davao City); Br. Carlito “Karl” Gaspar (theater/cultural administration, Davao City); Kubali Millan (visual arts/Davao City); Waway Saway (Talaandig/music, Lantapan, Bukidnon); Nilda Mangilay (Subanen / indigenous art, Zamboanga Del Sur); Kathara Dance Theater Collective (dance-theater, Davao City); Kaliwat Performing Artists Collective (theater/cultural administration, Davao City); Tambuli Cultural Dance Troup, (dance/indigenous art, Tawi Tawi); MSU Kabpapagariya Ensemble (theater/cultural administration, General Santos City); and Dumendingan Arts Guild (cultural administration/indigenous Art, Pagadian City).

The GADOR Award aims to recognize its exceptional individuals and organizations who have contributed immensely to the flourishing of arts and culture in the region.  The selection was undertaken by a committee composed of prominent experts and specialists in Mindanao in the field of arts and culture.  The awardees for this year were chosen from a total of 20 nominations from the KSS Mindanao network.  In 2020, the 1st Gador Awards were conferred to six individual honorees (Agnes Locsin, Maria Todi, Sunnie Noel, Steven P.C. Fernandez, Nestor Horfilla, and Joey Ayala) and two organizations (Sining Kambayoka Ensemble and Integrated Performing Arts Guild).  Due to the pandemic, the awarding programs were held virtually and onsite.

The awarding ceremony in Tagum City was made even more meaningful with the superb performances rendered by some of the most prominent Mindanao artists and performing groups led by the four organizations who are Gador Awardees – Kaliwat, Kathara, Kabpapagariya Ensemble and Tambuli.  Adding excitement to the event were musical and dance performances by the Kuntaw Mindanao of Tagum City, RMMC Teatro Ambahanon and Ching Salubre of Gen. Santos City, University of Mindanao Chorale and Maan Chua of Davao City.  Two young and talented kids from Tagum City, Tristan Jacob H. Cortez and Keysha Nicole Q. Grancho hosted the program that was written and directed by Dr. Bart P. Savior with concept-repertoire line up by CCP CED Department Manager Chinggay Jasareno-Bernardo, who also facilitated the awarding ceremony.  The following officers from KSS Mindanao network served as presentors: Richard Banzuelo (Koronadal), Leonardo Carino (Gen. Santos), Amado Guinto (Iligan), Jesus Montajes (Davao), Lolito Pontillas (Agusan del Sur), Pepito Sumayan (Marawi), Thallah Alava (Maguindanao), Ted Nudgent Tac-an (Ozamiz), Renefe Tremedal (Pagadian), Cecile Mambuay (Cagayan de Oro), Adel Suemith (Davao), and Alma L. Uy (Tagum).

“Magpasalamat”(give thanks), a composition of Dr. Tejero based on a Manobo motif was given a new arrangement and interpretation in music and dance by Kaliwat and Kathara.  The said song was used for the 2021 Centennial Celebration of the Silliman University in Dumaguete City.  Songs by Waway and Popong: Mga Panginoon (The Gods) based on Waway’s arrangement, Bahaghari Tayo (We are Rainbows), and litsa Tamoka Yataki Tombi (a song advocacy to stop Lumad oppression, discrimination, marginalization, and call for self-determination and sovereignty), were likewise given a new musical arrangement and rendition by Kuntaw, Ching, Maan, and Kabpapagariya.  The finale number featured the song “Padayon” (move forward) composed by Grace Nono, choral arrangement by Rodolfo Delarmente and performed by the UM Chorale with a dance interpretation by the Ambahanon.

The Gador Awarding ceremony was a joint presentation of the Musikahan sa Tagum Foundation, the City of Tagum through its Tourism and Cultural Office, the Tagum City Women Council, DAGI and the CCP CED.

  • Festival of Lights Is Back Live and On-Ground at Ayala Triangle Garden

Ayala Land will once again make Christmas happen at the launch of the Festival of Lights 2022! After running virtual editions of the Festival of Lights to ensure safety during the pandemic, the most anticipated family Christmas tradition is back LIVE and ON-GROUND at Ayala Triangle Gardens starting November 10, Thursday, with never-before-seen features to usher a BIGGER and BRIGHTER celebration.

    Ayala Festival of Lights 3
    Ayala Festival of Lights 4

In partnership with Kroma and Acid House, Ayala Land begins the affair with a fun and quirky introduction to the actual Light Show. Aimed to build a celebratory vibe by creating excitement in light of the two-year pause, the intro video—following the idea of “The Christmas Lights Factory”—suggests that Santa and the elves are working hard to bring the Light Show back. Projected on the canopy façade, everyone gathered at Ayala Triangle Gardens will catch the elves as they prepare the Christmas lights machine to work. As soon as it does, the machine produces lights of various shapes, colors, and sizes. The elves, then, pick these up and transport each element from the screen to the trees surrounding ATG. It ends with Santa with a powerful switch that turns everything on, ready for the Light Show.

    Ayala Festival of Lights 2
L – R) Cheng Kabigting, Head of Sales and Marketing of Kroma Entertainment; Ian Monsod, CEO of Kroma Entertainment; GA Fallarme, Festival of Lights 2022 technical director; Sueyen Austero, Festival of Lights 2022 lighting director; Ohm David, Festival of Lights 2022 show director; Misha Quimpo, Project Development Manager for Makati; Mel Ignacio, Senior Estate Head of Makati; Robert Lao, Senior Vice President and Group Head of Ayala Land Estates;  Bobby Dy, President and CEO of Ayala Land; Bea Zobel de Ayala, Jr.; Jaime Zobel de Ayala, Sr.; Beatriz Zobel de Ayala; Sofia Zobel Elizalde; Honorable Abby Binay, Mayor of Makati; Honorable Luis Campos, Congressman of Makati (Second District Representative); Honorable Monique Lagdameo, Vice Mayor of Makati; Chrissy Roa, Head of Marketing and Communications, Ayala Land Estates; Sharon Vital, Marketing Manager for Makati; Alex Jamisola, Senior Marketing Associate for Makati; Maestro Jeffrey Solares of the Manila Symphony Orchestra; Mikey Amistoso and Jazz Nicolas, Festival of Lights 2022 musical composers

Director Ohm David and Lighting Designer Sueyen Austero conceptualized this year’s grand presentation. As Christmas tunes play, visuals will be projected on the trees around ATG. It begins with moving constellations that slowly form colorful indigenous patterns to tell the story of creation. As the scene builds, the screen blacks out then reveals stars, halos, parols, and other festive icons, which then merge to form a kaleidoscope of images. Moving and turning, it will ultimately end with an explosion of colors.

    Ayala Festival of Lights 7

Accompanying the light show are three holiday medleys. The first is an orchestral rendition headed by the Manila Symphony Orchestra, followed by an upbeat TikTok rendition by Tris Suguitan, Jazz Nicolas, and Mikey Amistoso. The show concludes with a soothing chorale rendition by Jazz Nicolas and Mikey Amistoso.

    More to come

Ayala Land and Make It Makati are bringing back the kind of Christmas we all love and miss. With more upcoming events and festive displays, Makatizens can expect exciting reunions with loved ones this December and beyond.

    Ayala Festival of Lights 8

Watch out! More to come are Ayala Land’s Christmas Market at Ayala Triangle Gardens on December 2 to 31 in partnership with the French Embassy; Simbang Gabi at Ayala Triangle Gardens on December 15 to 23 featuring a live performance by the Philippine Youth Symphonic Band on the opening night; and the Samsung Performing Arts Theater’s Christmas Extravaganza on December 20 to 22 featuring Simbang Gabi services and free-for-all concerts for any purchase receipt at Ayala Malls Circuit.

    Ayala Festival of Lights 6

The Festival of Lights 2022 will run 6pm – 10 pm, one show every hour, daily, until January 8, 2023. The show, including the projection on the canopy facade of Ayala Triangle Gardens, runs around 20 minutes long all in all.

Award-winning novelist, scriptwriter, and National Artist Ricky Lee seems to have an early holiday gift to his fans! Lee has recently announced the arrival of his latest novel, Lahat ng B this December. A sequel to one of his most beloved books, Para Kay B, the author has teased that some of the stories from the first book will resume in the new novel.

“Kaninong kuwento ang gusto n’yong magpatuloy bukod kay Lucas at kay Bessie?” Lee asked his readers almost a year ago when he announced that he was writing the said sequel. The novel Para Kay B revolves around five romantic stories that are loosely tied to each other, with each story exploring the different faces of love, be it a romance between the same sex, a forbidden relationship, and more.

“Me quota ang pag-ibig. Sa bawat limang umiibig ay isa lang ang magiging maligaya. Kasama ka ba sa quota?” the book’s descriptor reads.

The official plot of Lahat ng B has yet to be revealed, but readers don’t have to wait long to read the book, as the author confirmed the novel’s release in the first week of December. • RainbowQC Shorts: Diverse Portraits of the LGBTQ Experience

From its premiere last year with QCinema, How to Die Young in Manila by Petersen Vargas is about a surreal meet-up amidst a violent setting.

    poster 1

The film, which has been exhibited in Busan, LA Outfest & Singapore, stars Elijah Canlas where he portrays a teenage boy following a group of young hustlers, thinking one of them may be the anonymous hook-up he has arranged to meet for the night. As he anxiously finds a way to get closer, each of the other boys inexplicably turn up as dead bodies strewn in pavements, until only one of them is left.

The third short film by Cinemalaya Best Director awardee Gabriel Serrano is loosely based on a lost silent film by Jose Nepomuceno that reimagines classic Philippine folklore into a contemporary diptych of feminine bodies, rage, and freedom. Dikit portrays a young woman with a monstrous secret and she desperately longs for a different body. When a new couple moves in next door, she sees her chance to finally get one.

    poster 2

Another silent short similarly explores queer horror elements. Alingasngas ng Mga Kuliglig by Vahn Pascual, which is a product of the Mit Out Sound Lab last year, shows a young man who is coerced by his father to become the next folk healer of their town. Things do not go as planned when he falls in love with a tikbalang.

Young filmmaking duo, Kaj Palanca & Celeste Joven, won the 2016 QCinema Audience Award for their debut short, Contestant No. 4. A young boy, who frequently visits an old man who lives alone, chances upon the latter watching a dated clip of himself as a cross-dressing boy. As the movie progresses, the two main characters gain a richer understanding of how the weight of life and identity should be carried.

    poster 3

Two other QCinema shorts complete the program that offers contrasting glimpses of queer experience. Isang Daa’t Isang Mariposa, by Norvin de los Santos, was nominated as Urian Best Short Film in 2019. A religious 100-year-old trans woman visits her ex-lover’s son to bail him out of jail. She uses her P100,000 government award for centenaries for one last chance at love.

Focusing on a gay teenager who develops an anonymous sexual affair with a mature man online, i get so sad sometimes by Trishtan Perez won the Best Short Film at QCinema last year. When the stranger finally promises that he’ll reveal his face the day after, the former couldn’t contain his excitement but must only keep it to himself.

Catch these remarkable collection of shorts on QCinema’s theatrical venues as well as via Vivamax VOD streaming platform.

  • Mobile Photography Tips and Tricks  from vivo Y22s’ Superb Camera Features

It is undeniable that almost everyone now carries a camera with them via their smartphone all the time. What’s more noteworthy is that these gadgets keep on improving with better specs and functionalities. Case in point: the vivo Y22s. It unapologetically flaunts supreme photography with its 50MP Super Night main camera, 2MP Macro camera, 8MP Front camera, and relevant features.

Mobile Photography Tips and Tricks from vivo Y22s Superb Camera Features

You’ve got the tool, but how about your skills? Are they at par with the ever-upgrading camera phone capabilities? If not, maybe this list can help. If you want to take more stunning snapshots with your mobile phone, here are a few tips and tricks to guide you.

    1. Start with a clean lens

This may sound mundane and trivial, but most people don’t remember to do it. It is so easy to ignore the dust, dirt, and smudges that accumulate on your camera phone. So make it a habit to clean your lens before a shoot. You’ll be amazed how a quick wipe could produce crystal clear images.

    2. Let there be natural light

Light is one of the most vital factors for any picture to look good, but it might be best to avoid using flash as it is still better shooting with natural light. It makes the images look great, pure, and clean. Photos taken during the golden hour look divine because of the hues and the soft, flattering effect.

Mobile Photography Tips and Tricks from vivo Y22s Superb Camera Features.

And if you shoot in low-light conditions or at night, this is where vivo Y22S’ Super Night camera comes in handy. It utilizes a large sensor that gathers light like a professional camera, delivering industry-leading 50MP high-definition images every time. You can most certainly relive the most significant and remarkable moments captured in photos with full vivid details. Meanwhile, the 2MP Macro camera highlights tiny and exciting gems hidden from your naked eyes, with a focus that draws as close as 4cm.

On the flip side of the smartphone, the 8MP Front camera shows your vibrant self no matter how bright or dim your surroundings are. The Super Night Selfie uses noise reduction technology and a selfie softlight band to generate a gentle light giving you a fresh looking selfie photo even after a long day at work.

    3. Keep the focus

Mobile Photography Tips and Tricks from vivo Y22s Superb Camera Features ... 1

Because of technological advancements, mobile phone cameras can now take a hint at what you want to photograph. They smartly recognize faces and other main subjects in clear scenes. However, in more complex or less-than-ideal situations, a simple tap on the screen, on the point where you want the camera to focus, can be done to avoid blurry shots and get a sharp result. Making smartphone photography easier and more professional looking, the vivo Y22s is also equipped with Bokeh camera feature to capture the subject’s depth. When mastered, this trick can bring more life to photos and deliver a realistic image as seen by the naked eyes.

    4. Get creative with your composition

Follow the rule of thirds and try to steer clear of placing your subject right in the center. Imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically—basically 9 even squares). Place the subjects in the intersections or along the lines of your photo to create a more balanced and fascinating composition.

Also, symmetry often does wonders and makes pictures more interesting. Using a natural frame, like a window, a doorway, or an arch, around your subject is also aesthetically pleasing. And especially for panoramic shots, straighten the horizon by turning on your camera grid to display a set of lines across the screen.

    5. Experiment and edit your images

Getting good pictures from your phone doesn’t start and end with your camera. You can also utilize photo-editing apps to tweak your shots as you please. Thankfully, the vivo Y22S features Multi-Style Portrait mode for both the rear and front cameras. This is specifically designed to include face beauty, bokeh, among many styles.

For the rear camera, you may choose among natural, vintage, northern lands, fashion, summer party, Japanese style, monochrome, silver salt, and wet settings. On the other hand, the front camera, fresh, texture, 1980s, rococo, gray, film, holiday, Kyoto cherry, and Tokyo style are available for you to use.

Take unlimited shots and pick the best later

Some of these guidelines are unbelievably basic, while some techniques may need more time for you to get used to. The key to making all this work perfectly is to practice. Take as many photos as you can. Study the results and take notes on how they can be improved. Fortunately, the vivo Y22s won’t let you down with the amount of files you can save as it boasts up to 16GB Dynamic RAM and 128GB memory that supports 1TB expansion. There’s no need to worry anymore about great pics going to waste.

Allow some time to practice these tricks and find yourself mastering smartphone photography in no time. The vivo Y22s got your back should you want to spend the day refining your photography skills, thanks to its 5000 mAh battery plus an 18W FastCharge support to quickly get back on track to learn more and find your style. Of course, it helps greatly to master what your own camera phone can do, too. After which, you’ll be delighted to see significant improvements in your pictures you never imagined possible.

Officially available nationwide, the vivo Y22s comes in two variants: vivo Y22s 8+128GB sells for only Php 12,999 while the vivo Y22s 4+128GB variant retails at Php 10,999. vivo fans can also avail for installment plans via Home Credit and credit card options. A purchase of the vivo Y22s 8+128GB variant comes with an exclusive limited edition bluetooth neckband earphones until supplies last.
