The latest installment of Scary Movie has stormed the global box office with a franchise-best $105 million opening weekend, marking a triumphant return for one of cinema’s most beloved horror-comedy series.
Leading the charge are returning fan favorites Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall, who reunite on screen for the first time in 25 years. Their long-awaited comeback has clearly resonated with audiences, helping the sixth film achieve the biggest opening weekend in the franchise’s history.
Directed by Michael Tiddes, a frequent collaborator of Marlon Wayans, the film surpassed industry expectations in North America with a strong $55 million debut. International audiences contributed an additional $50.5 million, pushing the worldwide total to $105 million and setting a new benchmark for the series.
Philippine moviegoers can catch the horror-comedy hit when it opens in cinemas nationwide on June 10. The film has been classified R-16 with no cuts.

For Marlon Wayans, the enduring appeal of Scary Movie lies in its ability to find laughter in even the most unexpected situations.
“Like they say, laughter is the best medicine,” he explains. “When you can find humor in unexpected situations, that’s when you really become funny. We’re sending up the world around us and it’s dark sometimes, but we know how to bring in the light. Tension, comedy and horror have a similar rhythm. Once you feel that tension, then you know you’re going to be scared. And then here comes a fart joke. Tension, tension, tension, scare, joke. That’s horror-comedy.”

One of the film’s biggest draws is the reunion of the franchise’s most recognizable stars. Seeing Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall together again has fueled excitement among longtime fans eager to revisit the series’ signature brand of humor.
Combined with fresh gags, new horror targets, and plenty of outrageous moments, the latest chapter proves that Scary Movie still knows how to deliver big laughs while celebrating the genre it loves to parody.
Opens June 10 in Philippine Cinemas
Fresh off its record-breaking global debut, Scary Movie arrives in Philippine cinemas on June 10. Rated R-16, no cuts. Tickets are now available. Distributed locally by Paramount Pictures PH.
Artist Playground, in cooperation with Kho-lab Productions, presents the twin bill Double Take: Reverse Card and Al.Ter. The two one-act plays, written by Chase Kyl Loza and Pablo Joaquin respectively, are directed by Paul Jake Paule. Performed by a plethora of performers with alternates for each role, the production is slated for a stunning 20 shows over four weeks. This run cuts directly through Pride Month, a fitting backdrop since both plays revolve around queer stories.
The show opens with Al.Ter, which follows Al as he loses his live-in partner, Lester (nicknamed Ter), the morning after an argument. While wandering through the furniture section of a department store, a heartbroken Al meets Terrence, who also goes by Ter and looks exactly like Lester. Al befriends Terrence and asks him to roleplay as his deceased lover, desperate for a chance to find closure.
Al.Ter opens provocatively with Al and two other actors acting out a threesome in the dark, recording it for publication on Al’s “alter” account. It’s daring, sexy, and shot in minimal light, giving the distinctimpression that one or two of them are actually naked. However, that provocative opening is merely a hook, from there on, Al must deal with the consequences of being caught living a double life.
It is through Ter’s double, played by the same actor, that Al ultimately finds some level of closure. The one-act play is poignant and bittersweet, cleverly incorporating the idea of doppelgangers and the theory of genetic variation and use it to push for a moving story about forgiveness.
On opening night, Al.Ter was performed by Johnrey Rivas and Drei Arias as Al and Ter, respectively. I also had the opportunity to see an open rehearsal featuring Rivas alongside James Ramada, as Ter. Both Arias and Ramada have shown great skill in bringing Ter to life. Arias easily shifts from one version of Ter to the other, crafting distinct mannerisms and delivery of lines for each character; the fact that he switches between both roles in a split second on stage is quite a feat. Ramada’s approach relies on a much more internal switch.
While there’s barely a visible difference between his two iterations, his Lester is softer and warmer, whereas his Terrence is all “bro” and macho energy. Ultimately, both actors do an excellent job at finding the nuances that allow the plays’s themes of forgiveness to flow, providing a grounded emotional core. Unfortunately, Rivas’ performance feels a bit too scripted and measured. It feels less natural than that of his co-actors. There’s a predictable pace and rhythm that gets in the way of the storytelling.
Reverse Card, on the other hand, is a tense cat-and-mouse game between Marvin, a gay aspiring writer who was bullied in school, and John, former tormentor. As the play opens, Marvin is visibly excited because John is coming over to his house. While the encounter initially feels friendly, but as the night progresses, we realise there is far more to this meeting than a simple paid hookup. With secrets waiting to be revealed and mind games to be played, the atmosphere shifts from friendly to terrifying really quickly and it opens up a lot of emotions for both characters to unearth.
On opening night, Reverse Card starred Gerhard Krysstopher as Marvin and Gerald Magallanes as John. Both delivered incredibly strong performances. Krysstopher playing out a wide range of tones and styles for the more eccentric Marvin, who turns out to be playing a much darker game than John.
Meanwhile, Magallanes anchors the stage with a brusque, macho energy; he projects a frightening presence that makes you fear for Marvin except Marvin is not an easy character to break. I also had the opportunity to see Inah Evans and Drei Arias at the open rehearsal, and duo shared very good chemistry as well. Evans cleverly hides Marvin’s darker side behind a layer of comedy, which offers a refreshing contrast. Arias, not the other hand, brings a softer, more charming side to John that makes his John more charming and irresistible that it leads you to not question why Marvin would invite him to his home in the first place.
My issue with Reverse Card is how it takes the collective anger and frustration of gay people who have been bullied and mistreated poorly by their families, and channels it entirely into a spirit of vengeance. It problematizes and subverts a common trope, but instead of offering empowerment, the narrative resorts to violence and harm.
Dramaturgically, Double Take: Reverse Card and Al.Ter tackles the contrasting themes of retribution and forgiveness. The twin bill explores our shared humanity through the suffering inflicted upon us by others, alongside the suffering we inflict upon ourselves in relation to grief. However, by choosing to end it with Reverse Card, the production leaves us with such a sour note, considering that this is Pride Month. It’s not the best look.

In the case of geometric abstractionist Aaron Virata Mempin and premier jewelry designer Mitzi De Castro Parungao, this kind of convergence feels nothing like a clash, but more like alchemy. What emerges is beyond just a mere conventional exhibit, but an immersive dialogue. Between them exists a shared language, one that moves effortlessly from the wall to the body, and back again.
To begin with, their creative practices exist in entirely different spheres. Virata Mempin’s visual art occupies space, asks to be stood before, absorbed, and even viewed from a distance, as it is often layered with texture and narrative, making it the kind of art that unfolds slowly. Parungao’s pieces, on the other hand, are intimate. They are meant to be held, worn, and lived with. Virata Mempin’s work invites observation, while Parungao’s pieces encourage participation. Thus, together, their alliance feels both artistic and approachable. This shared sensibility was what made their collaboration feel inevitable.
These two creative souls proved this during their recently concluded joint exhibit held at Salcedo Auctions in Makati City. Presented by the Rotary Club of Makati, this exclusive one-day-only preview featured Virata Mempin’s geometric abstract masterpieces and Parungao’s fine jewelry, plus collab pieces which they ‘authored’ together. The shared exhibit brought together two strengths that rarely meet in equal measure, highlighting artistic depth and emotional accessibility. It showcased how Virata Mempin’s visual art carries a strong visual identity, which is expressive, layered, and rooted in storytelling, reflection, memory, and meaning. Meanwhile, it also highlighted Parungao’s sensibility that understands people, spaces, and audience connection, as she has an instinct for translating creativity into experiences that feel warm, relatable, and culturally resonant.
“My visual language adjusted from purely structural geometry on canvas to a more fluid dialogue with jewelry. I was drawn to Mitzi’s ability to translate complex emotions into wearable art, which mirrors my own pursuit of finding order within my pieces,” Virata Mempin shared, and further explained that he associates this collaboration with the concept of “Refined Intersections,” where the precision of geometry meets the organic elegance of fine jewelry craftsmanship. On the flipside, Parungao admitted to being immediately struck by the energy of Virata Mempin’s geometric abstract art and responded by creating pieces that sought to capture and reflect that same vibrancy. “I was most surprised by how naturally our two distinct mediums merged into a singular, cohesive narrative. Moving forward, my practice will likely embrace more cross-disciplinary influences to keep the creative process fresh and expansive,” she expressed.
Parungao is a designer driven by the desire to create timeless, soul-stirring jewelry that celebrates personal milestones and the heritage of fine craftsmanship. “My inspiration is drawn from the intersection of nature’s organic beauty and the structured elegance of modern architecture. In this exhibit, I was telling stories of connection and the invisible threads that bind different artistic disciplines together. Working with Aaron challenged me to think more abstractly about composition and how a piece of jewelry can function as a sculpture in motion,” she mused. “This first collaboration with a visual artist did not require an adjustment of my voice but rather amplified its resonance through a larger visual scale. The conversation is strongest in the pieces where the angularity of his lines perfectly cradles the curves of my jewelry designs,” Parungao added. To which, Virata Mempin responded: “Her focus on the intimacy of jewelry pushed me to continue the smaller, finer details of my work. Our exchange was a fluid flow of ideas.”
In today’s creative landscape, audiences are increasingly drawn not only to talent, but to authenticity because more and more people tend to respond to projects that feel personal, intentional, and emotionally honest. This recent partnership of Virata Mempin and Parungao carries that value, as there was a natural chemistry in the way art, storytelling, lifestyle, and human connection melded their works. What made this creative partnership compelling is contrast balanced by shared vision. Virata Mempin leans toward introspection and visual narrative, while Parungao contributes energy, lifestyle appeal, and a strong sense of audience engagement. Where he created emotional texture, she helped shape how that emotion was embraced and experienced.
It comes as no surprise, therefore, how beneath these differences lies a striking similarity. After all, both are—at their core—storytellers. Each of them approaches their craft with a sensitivity to detail that borders on the obsessive, in the best way. Nothing is random, whether it is a line, a curve, or a material choice; all their separate decisions are always made with intent. Their works do not simply exist; they communicate. Themes of identity, memory, and transformation surface not as declarations, but as quiet undercurrents, inviting the viewer (or in Parungao’s case, the wearer) to find their own meaning within them.
Central to the exhibit is a limited suite of three pioneering collaborative earrings that serve as the physical manifestation of Shared Authorship. Parungao’s dangling pieces feature meticulously set gems and Akoya pearls, nested within silver dipped in yellow gold. In these works, the rigid, structural ‘grid’ of Virata Mempin’s geometric world finds a new, fluid soul. The angularity of the silver-gold forms acts as a modern cradle for the organic luster of the pearls, transforming Virata Mempin’s two-dimensional ‘organized chaos’ into wearable, three-dimensional sculptures that move with the wearer.
This joint exhibit diffused the gap between viewing and wearing. Where Virata Mempin dealt with visual narrative, Parungao translated this emotion into form. Parungao, meanwhile, admitted that the conversation is strongest in the pieces where the angularity of Virata Mempin’s lines perfectly cradles the curves of her jewelry designs. Because of this unique collaboration, Virata Mempin underscored how both of them learned that their individual creative voices were not diminished, but rather enriched. “This is what happens when we leave room for another artist’s vision,” he smiled.
