  • “Run Rabbit Run” – A Thrilling Dive into the Depths of Parental Trauma and Guilt

Lionsgate Play’s latest addition, “Run Rabbit Run,” a psychological thriller, promises to send shivers down the spine of its audience. Directed by the acclaimed Daina Reid, known for “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and penned by Hannah Kent in her debut screenplay, the film takes the viewer on a harrowing journey into the abyss of unresolved parental trauma.

    Unraveling the Mystery: Sarah’s Struggle

“Run Rabbit Run” stars Sarah Snook of “Succession” fame, portraying Sarah, a dedicated fertility doctor and single mother. Her world is turned upside down when her seven-year-old daughter Mia, played by Lily LaTorre (“The Clearing”), starts exhibiting bizarre behavior. Claiming to be Alice, Sarah’s long-lost sister, Mia becomes the catalyst, unearthing forgotten ghosts and painful memories from Sarah’s past.

    The Inspiration Behind the Story

Hannah Kent’s inspiration for the story stems from a captivating documentary about children recalling past lives. “I’d seen this amazing documentary which focused on children who remembered other families or spoke of previous experiences; and I was always curious about what that would be like as a parent, to have your child start to talk about another mother, another father… It’s about the suffering and the grief that you experience when you lose that connection with your own child, as well as the suffering linked to unresolved parental trauma.” Kent explains. This narrative is a deep dive into the psychological turmoil and the inherent complexities of maternal bonds and guilt.

Exploring Motherhood and the Female Psyche

Director Daina Reid highlights the film’s unique perspective on motherhood and female guilt. “Run Rabbit Run” delves into the intense pressures and societal expectations faced by working mothers like Sarah. Reid accentuates the balancing act between personal fulfillment, financial security, and the demanding role of a single parent.

A Milestone for Female Leadership in Film

Significantly, “Run Rabbit Run” has received backing from the Screen Australia Gender Matters initiative. It stands out as one of the few feature films with a female-majority leadership team in the production department, marking a notable achievement in gender representation in the film industry.

Catch the Thriller on Lionsgate Play

Embark on this haunting journey with “Run Rabbit Run,” premiering exclusively on Lionsgate Play starting November 24. This film is not just a thriller; it’s an exploration of the depths of the human psyche, maternal challenges, and the haunting impact of the past.

  • Daryl Hall Files Restraining Order on John Oates

News broke out several hours ago that Daryl Hall filed a restraining order on John Oates, his partner in the famed pop and soul duo, Hall and Oates. Details are unavailable as all court documents are sealed as per Hall’s request. The only matter that is known is that it is filed in court as a “contract/debt” dispute.

    DARYL HALL HEADLINE

In a podcast interview with Bill Maher in 2022, Hall revealed to the comedian that both him and Oates “are Brothers and not creative partners”. “You think John Oates is my partner? … He’s my business partner. He’s not my creative partner.”

Added Hall, “We made records called Hall & Oates together, but we’ve always been very separate, and that’s a really important thing for me.” Hall then went on to diminish the collaborative aspect of Hall & Oates, using the duo’s 1980 No. 1 hit “Kiss on My List” as an example of their apparent creative separation. “I did all those [harmonies],” Hall said. “That’s all me.” Oates is not credited as a songwriter on “Kiss on My List,” but is listed as a co-producer with Hall.

This dashes any hopes of Filipino music fans seeing, at least, in the foreseeable future any partnership or live shows by Hall & Oates the duo that produced 29 hit singles from the 1970s to the 1980s including six number one songs such as “Rich Girl”, “Kiss On My List”, “Private Eyes”, “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)”, “Maneater”, and “Out of Touch”.

Daryl Hall and the Daryl’s House Band would be the best possible chance to experience the chart-topping catalogue of this Rock and Roll and Songwriter Hall of Famer on November 27, 2023 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Daryl Hall and the Daryl’s House Band with special guest Todd Rundgren is brought to you by Ovation Productions along with Blast TV and Tap Digital Media Ventures Corporation. Tickets at smtickets.com and priced at 15,750 (SVIP) / 14,750 (VIP) / 12,750 (Patron) / 10,750 (Lower Box A) / 9,750 (Lower Box B) / 5,750 (Upper Box) / and 2,750 (Gen. • MOVIE REVIEW: A Revolutionary Direction for Disney: a review of ‘Wish’

To celebrate its 100th year, Disney releases the new animated feature ‘Wish,’ which oddly enough stumbles and flounders at its beginning, weighted down by a muddled world building exercise before it finds its stride. While a lot of the movie doesn’t explore new territory, what does feel fresh is how the movie double downs on Disney’s continuous attempt to cater to a more progressive audience and how ‘Wish’ seems to champion the voices of dissent. There is a strong sense of a revolutionary tone that is pervasive throughout the film that feels new and surprising. It manages to find its magic at its finale that managed to send shivers down my spine and got me genuinely teary-eyed.

The film, directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn and written by Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore, is about the fictional city of Rosas, on an island “deep in the Mediterranean Sea,” whose king is a sorcerer who can grant wishes. There is a mix and mash of different cultures at play here as the mystical nature of Rosas has made it a melting pot of various cultures that seems to just blend and mix so unnaturally well. The sorcerer king, Magnifico, and his wife, Queen Amaya, have made a haven for its people. Magnifico asks everyone for their wishes, and he keeps them safe and protects them while he grants some of them and makes them true.

HOW DID THE WISHING STAR, UPON WHICH SO MANY CHARACTERS WISHED, COME TO BE? — Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original fairytale adventure “Wish” is an all-new story is set in the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha, an optimist with a sharp wit and a deep caring for her community, turns to the sky in a moment of need, and makes a wish. Asha’s plea is answered by a cosmic force, a little ball of boundless energy, Star. Together, they will face the most formidable of foes to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars – wondrous things can happen. The voice cast includes Ariana DeBose as Asha and Alan Tudyk as the pajama-wearing goat, Valentino. Featuring original songs by Julia Michaels, “Wish” is helmed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, and produced by Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes. The feature film releases Fall 2023.

But a young girl, Asha, discovers a dark secret. Not all the wishes that Magnifico keeps and protects will ever be granted. This utopian city is nothing more but a falsehood, buying into a veneer of niceties. It’s an autocracy in disguise and everyone is a willing victim, with their wishes held hostage for their compliance.

In a fit of rage and disgust, Asha wishes upon a star and the star magically appears before her and starts to make enchant the world around her.

EVERYONE HAS A WISH – In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” Asha’s pet goat, Valentino, is among the first to experience the magic of Star, a little ball of boundless energy inadvertently summoned by Asha. Featuring the voices of Academy Award®-winning actress Ariana DeBose as Asha and Alan Tudyk as Valentino, the epic animated musical “Wish” hits the big screen on Nov. 22, 2023. © 2023 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Essentially, ‘Wish’ is an exploration on the nature and importance of wishes into our lives. The movie sells it hard, and it does not go unnoticed that it’s definitely part and parcel of a propaganda to continue to entrench Disney into our lives, what with all the easter eggs of various Disney cartoons and stories placed generously around the film. It can even serve as a sort of origin story for many of Disney’s animated feature if you catch the motifs at play.

In trying to explain this new world and how it operates, the first half of ‘Wish’ comes across as long and drawn-out exposition. There’s so much talking, not much showing. There’s just so much explaining. It slows everything down and it made the kids in the audience disengage at the start. The moment Asha sings the title song, ‘This Wish,’ and the star comes down and starts to stir trouble, then the film starts to find its footing.

And this when the magic really starts to happen. There’s an interesting new perspective offered in the song ‘I’m a Star’ that becomes a fulcrum to the film’s extraordinary message that is later compounded by more songs and story points that pushes the film to take a revolutionary tone. The film actually incites the viewers to dissent against any sort of mind-control or oppression. The extremely charming (and rather media savvy King Magnifico) starts to show his spots and while all of this is sort of on-the-nose, it effectively sells the idea that the world we live in is not that far behind.

IT’S GOOD TO BE KING – In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” King Magnifico is the most powerful person in the kingdom of Rosas, where wishes really do come true. People come from everywhere to give their wishes to Magnifico, a charming and confident king who promises to grant their deepest desires—someday. But the king isn’t entirely altruistic; he alone decides whose wish will be granted, and he relishes the control. Featuring the voice of Chris Pine as King Magnifico, the epic animated musical “Wish” hits the big screen on Nov. 22, 2023. © 2023 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Chris Pine is excellent and charming as Magnifico, singing and acting his way through the character with his voice that it helps create a person we want to be brought down. Pine’s Magnifico is every gaslighting, overprotective, and narcissist leader who charms us out of our ability to choose for ourselves. He is an excellent counterpoint to a very solid performance from Arianna DeBose, who kills it as Asha. She sings with such fervor that it helps sell the Disney magic so much more.

When the film fully pushes for a revolution against the autocracy, it’s akin to a ‘Les Misérables’ chorus that can be infectious. Surprisingly, despite all of the things I didn’t like about the film at the beginning, I began to see the beauty of its message and its stance. Yes, ‘Wish’ is as much a celebration of Disney and all its capitalist stance but, at the same time, ‘Wish’ is also a call to find it within us to fight for what we love and what we believe in.

And it does this in a way that Disney has perfected over its 100 years – through spectacle and song. ‘Wish’ is not the best Disney movie but it is wonderfully idealistic and unabashedly progressive and during these times of severe conflict and strife, it is a welcome message of hope. There’s something right in the timing of this movie and as I held back tears at the reprise of its titular song, I was actually excited to see where Disney will continue bringing their stories in the future.

Reaction to the world premiere was overwhelming, with audience members saying ‘I loved it even more watching it with an incredible live orchestra.’ and ‘One of the most incredible experiences I’ve had.’

The one-of-a-kind show is ground-breaking in replication of the film’s score and soundtrack, fusing elements of orchestral with turntables and live DJ, and electronics for a rare and bold live experience.

A Sony Pictures Animation film, directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman and written by Phil Lord and Rothman, the movie introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.

The music score for the box office hit was composed by Academy Award® nominee, multiple Golden Globe®-nominee and Emmy-winning composer Daniel Pemberton, known for his work on movies such as The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Oceans 8, Enola Holmes, The Bad Guys and Steve Jobs.

  • Unveiling the Depths of Creativity: “Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom” Sets New Visual Benchmarks

James Wan, the acclaimed director of “Aquaman,” is back with a vibrant sequel, “Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom.” This time, the underwater world of Atlantis is not just revisited but expanded, revealing new, unseen realms that promise to captivate audiences.

    Rediscovering Atlantis and Beyond

Atlantis, in the sequel, is portrayed as more vivid and lively than ever. But the true allure lies in the exploration of entirely new territories, including the enigmatic Lost Kingdom, Necrus. In the first film, we glimpsed the richness of the seven Kingdoms of Atlantis, with Necrus being the unexplored frontier, now ready to be unveiled.

The Creation of Necrus: Inspired by Antarctica

James Wan’s creative vision transports viewers to Necrus, drawing inspiration from the remote and icy landscapes of Antarctica. This novel setting in the Aquaman universe introduces an array of unique visual elements and dark, mysterious creatures, a hallmark of Wan’s directorial style.

    Crafting a Frozen World

Creating Necrus became a cinematic endeavor in itself. Despite the English summer setting at Leavesden Studios, Wan’s team recreated Antarctica’s frozen tundra. Giant fans simulated snowstorms, while the cast, adorned in high-tech cold weather costumes, navigated an icy world. The crew, in shorts, battled the glare of the white set. The result is a breathtaking frozen kingdom brought to life with real-world location plates and aerial footage from Antarctica, Greenland, and Iceland.

Peter Safran on the Visual Feast

Producer Peter Safran highlights the film’s visual splendor, emphasizing James Wan’s talent in bringing fantastical colors and environments to the screen, “James Wan has an incredible ability to capture the colors and the fantasy that exist in these never-before-seen worlds,” says Safran. “We wanted to take the audience on a travelogue of these astounding new environments above and below the surface… By embracing the mythic nature of Aquaman’s quest and combining it with these stunning visuals, James gives us something uniquely compelling—it is worldbuilding and visual storytelling at its zenith.”

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom poster

The Human Element: A Tale of Brothers and Heroes

Despite the out-of-this-world settings, “Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom” stays grounded in its characters’ human aspects. The sequel delves into the relationship between Arthur (Jason Momoa) and Orm (Patrick Wilson), portraying them as brothers overcoming differences for a greater cause. The formidable Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) adds a darker layer to the narrative, driven by love and vengeance. This action-packed adventure delves deeper into character development and promises an engaging, immersive experience.

    Aquaman: A Hero’s Journey Continues

At the core of this story is Arthur/Aquaman, portrayed with the signature charm and humor by Jason Momoa. The sequel explores his dual role as both a father and a king, navigating the challenges and responsibilities that come with his position in Atlantis.

    The Star-Studded Cast

Joining the adventure are familiar faces like Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, and Randall Park, reprising their roles and adding depth to this rich cinematic universe.

    Join the Adventure

“Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom” is set to premiere exclusively in cinemas on December 20. This film is not just a sequel but a leap into uncharted cinematic waters, offering an experience that combines visual wonder with heartfelt storytelling.

  • ARTablado Presents Gathering Point

The term gathering point can mean several things but it always turns out to be something good. It’s a meeting place, a stomping ground or a hangout. For four friends who hail from Angono, one of the country’s top art capitals, it’s the title of their ongoing group show at ARTablado at Robinsons Galleria as well as a reunion and a chance for them to showcase their artistry to a wider audience.

PR ARTablado Presents Gathering Point 1

Jovito Andres, Edberth Roan, William Ner and Irwin Tolentino all grew up in the town of Angono, roughly 30 kilometers east of Manila. A small fishing village along Laguna de Bay in the province of Rizal, it has a laidback vibe that might have helped to cultivate dozens of artists and creatives.

The four featured artists were mentored by Angono native and esteemed visual artist Nemi Miranda who is credited with the art style called Imaginative Figurism. Despite this, all four went on to develop their respective art styles.

PR ARTablado Presents Gathering Point Bloom by Irwin Tolentino

Jovito and Edberth were elementary school classmates and became fast friends because of their shared love for art.

“We met William at art club in high school and remained friends all the way to college where we took up Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas,” Jovito said. They later met Irwin at Angono Ateliers, the art group where they were all active members, he added.

PR ARTablado Presents Gathering Point Family by Jovito Andres 1

“We had our own groups of friends but since we all were passionate about making art, we were able to form strong bonds with one another,” Jovito said.

Time passed and William and Irwin moved to the United States while Edberth transferred and busied himself with other pursuits. Only Jovito remained in Angono where he honed a style of painting that hews to traditional Filipino values of family.

PR ARTablado Presents Gathering Point Koi by Edberth Roan

Using oil paints on canvas or wood panels, or pastels on paper, Jovito’s idealized depictions include a family unit complete with tatay, nanay and bunso as well as separate paintings of Mother and child, and even a Father and child. The latter features a father with his back turned to the viewer and carrying his young son who is clutching a “lato lato”—a popular noisemaker that was the toy craze earlier this year.

PR ARTablado Presents Gathering Point Pathology of White Lies 2 by William Ner 1

Edberth prefers working with charcoal or colored pencils to bring out the different tonal values of shadows and light on paper. Many of his drawings are of orchids, lily pads and water lilies seen from above, the plants’ surfaces dotted with beads of moisture. His koi series is an archetype invitation to explore the natural world with an elevated ecological consciousness. Edberth also works with mixed media using intricate metalwork, gilded fibers, and other unusual everyday objects to produce unique pieces.

Using oil paints on Masonite board or canvas, William creates realistic and surreal paintings that incorporate disparate elements like Lego bricks, a Pinocchio puppet, bunched-up fabric, and tiny storm clouds.

    ARTabLado 2 1

“Excruciate” is a painful closeup of what viewers might assume to be Christ’s twisted feet on the cross. William expresses his truth with a powerful blend of surreal elements and bold, representational imagery that beckons viewers to take a closer look.

The fourth featured artist, Irwin Tolentino, creates abstract expressionist pieces that consist of acrylic paints and ink on watercolor paper. He employs action-packed paint splashes, organic drizzles, vivid color smears, and other texture-altering techniques to bring his pieces to life.

    ARTaBlaDo 1 1

“Although the four of us seldom get together, our friendship is still there. In fact, we still manage to joke around with each other given the ease of communicating nowadays,” Jovito said.

“Gathering Point” is a way for the four friends to touch base once again, this time at ARTablado, a setting that—for several years now—has been a staunch supporter of Philippine creativity.  The exhibit at ARTablado at Robinsons Galleria runs until November 30.

  • Conveying Emotions and Stories Through Music

A good live performance is one that creates a connection between the artist and the audience, where the music not only sounds great but also feels emotionally resonant, and this was exactly what renowned Russian pianist Nikolay Khozyainov brought to Manila when he performed as a guest soloist recently.

Guest soloist Nikolay Khozyainov with Maestro Grzegorz Nowak

“It was my first time to come to the Philippines, to perform with the PPO for the Filipino audience. Filipino people and musicians are very passionate and sophisticated people, it was a great joy to present the incredible masterpiece of Rachmaninov for the audience in Manila,” said the Russian pianist.

Billed “Russian Masters,” the third concert of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra for its concert season this year was curated to pay tribute to some of the best Russian composers: Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Sergei Prokofiev.

Leading the orchestra was PPO music director Maestro Grzegorz Nowak, with whom Khozyainov has worked with before. When the Maestro invited him to collaborate again, this time in Manila, Khozyainov was more than happy to oblige.

    Maestro Grzegorz Nowak

Born in Blagoveshchensk in 1992, a city in the Russian Far East, Khozyainov began to play the piano at the young age of five after hearing classical music in a local music store. “I came up to my mother and told her: ‘I want to play music.’ I had a desire to make those incredible sounds myself. Piano is like an orchestra for me, I can express any instrument on it, including the human voice,” shared Khizyainov.

For a gifted pianist like Khozyainov, the most important aspect of every piece is the emotion that it conveys. Music, after all, has always been a way to bring people together. It has the power to influence and advocate significant movements in the world, especially in preventing conflict and promoting peace.

    Nikolay Khozyainov

Performing Rachminoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the most amazing piano concertos in the piano repertoire, for the PPO Concert III, Khozyainov described the whole concerto as a masterpiece that “simply takes your breath away.”

“It was written in a very difficult period in Rachmaninoff’s life, he had depression and couldn’t compose anything. This piece is about overcoming desperate situations and getting to the light despite everything,” he expounded.

Khozyainov’s personal style when it comes to playing the piano involves going to the source of everything. For him, it is impossible to recreate a piece without knowing the sources.

“That is why I always study all existing manuscripts, all circumstances surrounding the creation of a musical piece. A printed score is good to have, but to really feel the piece with all your heart, you need to dive deeply into the manuscript. This way you can truly understand all the intentions of the composer.”

    Russian pianist Nikolay Khozyainov

Passion is Khozyainov’s driving force. With recitals, concerto engagements, and sold-out performances on all continents at the world’s foremost stages, every performance is not just a display of skill, but an expression of his love for the art.

“It’s about bringing the essence of the music to life, making each note tell a story that the audience can relate to,” concluded Khozyainov.

Through the mastery of the great Russian composers, their music and stories will live on as part of humanity – celebrated and retold over and over again for the many years to come.

The next PPO concert, dubbed “Ode to Joy,”  will premiere on December 8, 2023, 7:30pm, with Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto no. 2 in A and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9, op.125, D minor. Filipino pianist and former CCP president Raul Sunico will perform with the PPO.

The PPO concert season is in partnership with SSI Group, Inc., TBWA\SMP, Ascott Bonifacio Global City, and Lyf Malate Manila.

For more information about the PPO’s 39th concert season and their upcoming shows, visit the CCP (www.culturalcenter.gov.ph) and follow the official CCP social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest updates.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: The Wrong Hero: a review of ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’

Despite my own disbelief in the need for a prequel of ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise, there’s actually a lot of strong story points that is made in the origin story of Coriolanus Snow, the villain and main antagonist of the original trilogy. ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’ manages to highlight the importance of media and spectacle in any autocracy and oppressive government. As a prequel, the film is set during the period of the tenth Hunger Games (for reference, the movie was set during the 74th Hunger Games, 64 years later) and the games were much more crude and primitive in comparison. Televising the games was a new concept and through it, the film showcases elements of media theory that come into play. It’s a riveting examination of how intrinsically linked media and public perception is to government control.

What also elevates the film are spectacular (and rather surprising) performances from Viola Davis and Rachel Zegler, giving us two characters to really dig into. It’s surprising coming from material as commercial as this but a good actor knows how to make most of the parts that their given.

    The Hunger Games BANNER 5

Davis can do wonders with any role thrown at her and she makes her portrayal of Dr. Gaul, the head game maker of The Hunger Games an exploration of jadedness and cruelty. This is a woman who has seen the worst of humankind and is just mirroring it in her life. It’s quite a performance. It is wonderful counterpoint to that of Zegler’s Lucy Gray Baird, the female tribute of District 12. Zegler’s carefree and no-non-sense balladeer who is fighting for her life truly brings you in to the film. While Dr. Gaul seems to find no joy in life (other than taking it in surprising ways in the Hunger Games), Zegler’s Lucy Gray is full of life and is adamant in staying that way.

And this is my main issue with the film. ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ is a film that narrates the rise of Coriolanus Snow (played by Tom Blyth), the future enemy of Katniss Everdeen, a man who will be ruthless and sadistic and evil. The film is wrapped around in a dystopian world that is suffering from the oppression of a tyrannical regime. Snow is but collateral damage, his once wealthy-family has lost all of its political capital and Snow must exceed all expectations at University if he is to save his grandmother and cousin from starvation and being kicked out into the streets. In an effort to survive and thrive, he has to do well as a mentor to Lucy Gray and get noticed by those in power to receive the grand prize that will change his fortune.

As the film challenges autocratic states and gives a rather spirited argument on the value and price of human lives, the film puts front and center the desires of a man who would choose to sacrifice friends and principles to succeed. Yes, the blossoming love story between Snow and Lucy Gray creates the necessary tension that underlines what Snow lost in order for him to become the man he will become but is that really the best protagonist for this story?

As compelling a performance as Blyth can deliver, he is completely overshadowed by the nuanced and vital role Zegler infuses her portrayal of Lucy Gray. From the desperation and willingness, she has to live and survive her ordeal as a tribute, to the way she empowers every song number she has in the film with anger and rebellion, Zegler creates a character that is larger than life – a character that is in full defiance of everything the world of The Hunger Games calls for. I wouldn’t mind if the film began with Coriolanus but I would have wanted it to have finished with Lucy Gray. There’s so much more to the character than what we get to see in the film, and when we see the complex decisions the character makes at the final act of the film – that’s when you realise Zegler’s portrayal is far more layered and nuanced than you expect.

The film and its story, directed by Francis Lawrence (who directed the ‘Catching Fire’ and ‘The Mockingjay: Part One’ and ‘The Mockingjay: Part Two’), feels more in tune to humanizing and empathizing with Coriolanus Snow but to what end? For all its arguments about the loss of humanity in something brutal and cruel as the Hunger Games, to the importance of breaking free from that oppressive state, we continue to follow the story of a man who will only serve to make this world even harsher and crueller.

    The Hunger Games 1

By following Snow’s story from his challenging beginnings to how he beats all odds to become the person he will be, from his complex relationship with his tribute Lucy Gray, and such, we are meant to empathize with him, feel sorry for him, maybe even root for him and I feel that this goes against everything that the film is trying to convey against this sort of oppressive system.

Maybe ten or fifteen years ago, we could find value in the humanizing of anti-heros such as Snow. But in this current political climate and in this day and age where real life monsters exist and control governments, I am very wary of Hollywood’s continued representation of villains and humanizing them and giving them nuance and texture. In a film as political as any of ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise, in its dystopian view of a future that is grappling with its humanity, I would very much prefer a film that was less in favour of its villains.

I agree with the stance of its characters like Lucy Gray. I wish it was more of her movie than that of Snow.
