The Story of “Horizon: An American Saga”

“Horizon: An American Saga” spans the post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West, experienced through the eyes of many. The epic journey is fraught with peril and intrigue, from the constant onslaught of natural elements to interactions with Native American people who lived on the land and the determination and, at many times, ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it.

The movie explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat, and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner plays Hayes Ellison, a man with a mysterious past and a particular set of skills he tries to bury but is forced to use when a community of people he encounters needs help. Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends, and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Behind the Scenes: Fun Facts About Horizon

But first, here’s a treasure trove of knowledge, your definitive guide on the amazing behind-the-scenes facts of “Horizon: An American Saga.”

Kevin Costner in Horizon An American Saga
    1. Location Filming: Primarily filmed in rural areas of Utah, including the Shivwits Reservation west of St. George near the Santa Clara River, Moab, Apple Valley, and the surroundings of Zion National Park. The state provided incredible geological vistas—from plains to mesas to iconic red rocks to mountains and rivers—that evoke the time and places covered in the story.
    2. Local Involvement: Production utilized Utah locals in numerous capacities, from location managers to background extras to craft services, wagons (and horses), builders, and more.
    3. Historical Filming Ground: Utah has a long, rich history of filming within the state, with thousands of productions captured there since the 1920s, including Western heavy hitters like John Ford and John Wayne.
    4. Authentic Animals: For authenticity, animal wrangler Scott Perez sourced horned cattle from Mexico, a less hefty-looking breed than today’s more common Angus cattle, and more period-appropriate. He also sourced oxen from North Carolina, horses from Utah, North Carolina, Texas, New Mexico, and even Los Angeles, California, as well as mules from Salt Lake City and Price in Utah.
    5. Costner’s Choice: Seasoned rider Kevin Costner selected the horse for his character, Hayes Ellison, from Perez’s personal stables—a horse named Clark.
    6. Large-Scale Wrangling: At one point during filming, Perez’s team wrangled a whopping 90 horses (out of a total 110), 30 steers, 10 bucking horses, and eight mules at once.
    7. Historical Immersion: Sienna Miller, who plays Frances Kittredge, is a history nerd. “To be able to dive in and really experience this era and this moment in history, to be able to work on something that is so impartial and just states the facts, was astounding,” says Miller.
    8. Character Research: Abbey Lee, who plays Marigold, a sex worker of that time, read a book from the early 1900s by a woman called Nell Kimball as a reference for her character.

  • Gru’s Hilarious Family Adventure in “Despicable Me 4” Hits Cinemas July 3

Gru’s Hilarious Family Adventure in “Despicable Me 4” Hits Cinemas July 3

Gru is back, and this time, he’s juggling fatherhood with world-saving antics in the highly anticipated “Despicable Me 4.” Mark your calendars for July 3, when this animated adventure hits Philippine cinemas.

Gru’s New Role: Father of Four

“Gru has his hands full, as usual,” says Steve Carell, who voices the beloved villain-turned-good-guy Gru. In this latest installment of the Despicable Me franchise, Gru’s life takes a turn with the arrival of his and Lucy’s (Kristen Wiig) new baby, expanding his role to a father of four and a dedicated Anti-Villain League (AVL) agent.

    Watch the trailer below :

While Gru’s relationship with Lucy and the girls has never been stronger, connecting with little Gru Jr. proves challenging. “Lucy and the girls have always been his motivation to be the best that he can be, but with the arrival of Gru Jr., the family dynamic changes,” continues Carell. “Gru Jr. is a chip off the old block, but he’s not warming up to dear old dad. Gru has nothing but love for his baby boy, but he faces an uphill battle to win his son’s affection. It’s every parent’s nightmare to not instantly bond with your kids, and Gru struggles to establish a relationship with his new bundle of joy, while simultaneously saving the world as an AVL agent.”

A New Nemesis and Witness Protection

As if parenting challenges weren’t hard enough, Gru and his family are thrust into a witness protection program after Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell), Gru’s high school nemesis and award-winning supervillain, escapes from prison seeking revenge. Gru must assume the identity of Chet Cunningham, a solar panel salesman, to protect his loved ones. “Gru struggles to live discretely as his new alias, Chet Cunningham; a boring, somewhat nerdy solar-panel salesman,” Carell says. “It’s a stretch for Gru, as he’s accustomed to a life of excitement and danger. Also, he’s not the best actor, so that invariably leads to some problems!”

Despicable Me 4 production still 4

    The Enduring Journey of Gru

When Carell first took on the role of Gru, he never anticipated the enduring journey ahead. “From day one, Gru has been an absolute delight to play,” Carell says. “When we first meet him, he’s an evil, villainous criminal mastermind. But soon, we come to see that he also has an enormous heart, and a great capacity to love. He’s sort of a villain, kind of a hero. But mostly, he’s a husband and a father.

“I think that it’s fun to watch a character fight against the inevitability of their own goodness. Some people aren’t so nice, but they try to convince the world that they are; Gru is nice, but he tries to convince the world that he’s not! As the series has progressed, the writers have explored different aspects of Gru’s world. He’s still the same guy, but the emotional stakes become increasingly higher for him. It’s always rewarding to see a character grow, and Gru is no exception. The writing keeps the character fresh.”

    A Decade of Gru

The Despicable Me filmmakers have also enjoyed their collaboration with Carell for over ten years. Director Chris Renaud shares his admiration for Carell’s portrayal of Gru. As much fun as the Academy Award®-nominated Carell has been having being the voice of Gru, the Despicable Me filmmakers have also been enjoying their collaboration of more than 10 years with Carell, who has become synonymous with the iconic character Gru in the world of Despicable Me.

“Steve basically is Gru,” director Chris Renaud says, in admiration of how Carell has brought to life the lovable yet complex supervillain-turned-family-man, thanks to his comedic brilliance and emotional depth. “It’s impossible to imagine that character without Steve’s voice. He approaches the character with thoughtfulness and care, always striving for the best performance. Our recording sessions, sometimes lasting up to three hours, are a testament to Steve’s unwavering energy and professionalism. He’s a pleasure to collaborate with.”

    An Exciting New Cast

Besides Will Ferrell as the new movie’s big villain, “Despicable Me 4” welcomes new characters voiced by Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family”), Joey King (“Bullet Train”), Stephen Colbert (“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”), and Chloe Fineman (“Saturday Night Live”).

    Get Ready for Non-Stop Action

Let the games begin: Robinsons Land ARTablado presents ‘Taym Pers 2’

In this age of AI, prompt engineering, people pinned to their phones or tablets, and the insane influx of influencers, there was a time when kids played hide-and-seek in the moonlight, used empty cans and slippers as props (toys); mapped out their playground on the sidewalks with chalk; and interacted and enjoyed a live, active, person-to-person contact (not online) with friends; navigated all types of situations with the innocent imagination creativity, energy and determination only children possess.

“Taym Pers 2,” a “multi-sensory” art exhibition by the Alpas Art Group aims to revive and celebrate Filipino traditional games and the intrinsic spirit of play. By safeguarding these traditions, the group aims to contribute in preserving the uniqueness of the Filipino culture and the only Filipino identity built by generation of Filipinos so that we stay as Filipinos in future generations to inhabit our country.

PR ARTablado Presents Taym Pers 2 Alapaap ng Tagumpay by Naomi Narne

The exhibition is now ongoing until June 30, 2024 at the Robinsons Land Artablado space in Antipolo. It features the artworks of Alpas artists such as Arnold Dominic Ty, Benedict John Simbulan, Buhay Mendoza, Carmel Belda, Charmaine Narne, Christelle Arroyo, Fernando Sena, Wilfredo “Fred” Tejada, Hannah De Guia, Jaja Japitana, Jami Samson, Jana Charleen Mendoza, Jerico de Leon, Jo Tejada, Jonathan Joven, Jun Tuplano, Krister Isip, Kristine Costo, Lawrence Borsoto, Maria Cristina Arroyo, Naomi Narne, Ned Chiara Leis, Otto Neri, Pauline David, Ram Castillo and Rex Santiago.

Founders Othoniel Neri and Jonathan Joven narrates that it was in March 2023 when the first ‘Taym Pers’ exhibits were mounted at Robinsons Antipolo. At that time, the goal was simply to promote Filipino games through art.

Neri and Joven explained how Alpas was founded in the most adverse period of the pandemic as a way of communing with friends and creating freely.

PR ARTablado Presents Taym Pers 2 Dampa I by Christelle Arroyo

They named their group ‘Alpas’ which means to free one’s self or cut loose. The goal is to break away from any shackles that hold us back, acknowledging that it is only our self-limiting beliefs that restrain us from challenging ourselves to face any life situation. In art, we want to free ourselves from the chains of criticisms, shame, ridicule, conformities etc. because Art is free. We just need to keep playing out our ideas and see what emerges.” Now, for Taym Pers 2, the group wants to enhance the viewers’ appreciation of the importance of play in fostering social skills, resilience and adaptability.

PR ARTablado Presents Taym Pers 2 Hide and Seek I by Carlmel Bernard Belda

For this exhibition, the group also put on display various representations of Filipino games such as sungka, piko, trumpo, tumbang preso, etc. Visitors are encouraged to engage in gameplay to revive the nostalgia for the simpler yet more meaningful children’s playtimes.

Robinsons Antipolo ARTablado once again hosts “Taym Pers 2” to build on the previous success and support from the venue. The organizers chose the same venue to intensify, amplify, and broaden the reach of their advocacy and objectives. The aim is to continue and spread our Filipino games so they are not forgotten by future generations.

PR ARTablado Presents Taym Pers 2 Jak en Poy by Jaja Japitana

Alpas artist and curator Jami Samson answers, “We are exhibiting again at ARTablado not only as a way of showing our gratitude to the venue, but we also believe ARTblado is the perfect alternative art space for our advocacy to reach the general public through a venue that is accessible to all.”

Alpas president Jonathan Joven agrees. “Ninais naming muling idaos at itanghal ang ‘Taym Pers 2’ sa ARTablado Robinsons Antipolo para mas mapaigting, mas mapaingay, at mas mapalawak pa namin ’yung maaabot ng aming adbokasiya at layunin na hindi matigil, mahinto at mas mapalaganap pa ang ating larong Pinoy upang hindi ito malilimutan ng mga susunod na henerasyon ng kabataan.”

PR ARTablado Presents Taym Pers 2 Luksong Tinik by Otto Neri

ARTablado shares the ALPAS vision. The people behind Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) believe in the ingenuity and artistry of Filipinos. RLC has allocated spaces at Robinsons malls in Antipolo and Ortigas to hold exhibitions for art practitioners who deserve to showcase their hard work, grit and perseverance. ARTablado’s impact has been instantaneous for members of the art community who have been pining for a platform where every artist — from individual practitioners to members of art groups — gets the chance to shine.

PR ARTablado Presents Taym Pers 2 Our Base by Lawrence Borsoto

Jami points out how the artworks and participating artists were selected not only for their mastery in technique and how the subject of the exhibition resonates within their own practices, but also for their significant contribution as stewards of children’s agency through art workshops.

PR ARTablado Presents Taym Pers 2 Turumpo by Ram Castillo

“Taym Pers 2” is more than an art exhibit; it is a celebration and preservation of Filipino cultural heritage. By highlighting traditional Filipino games through art, Alpas not only fosters a sense of community and cultural identity but also ensures that these cherished traditions continue to thrive in future generations. The exhibition at ARTablado promises to be a vibrant and impactful continuation of this advocacy, reaching a wider audience and inspiring more to appreciate and participate in Larong Pinoy.

    Oplus_32

“The appreciation of Filipino values is evident in these games, such as camaraderie, teamwork, empathy, respect for each other, and gratitude, which you can experience directly in each game,” mused the artists of Alpas. These values are crucial for personal growth and community- and even nation-building.

Established in 2020, Robinsons Land ARTablado, a portmanteau of “art” and “entablado” is Robinsons Land’s very own stage in showcasing the Filipino ingenuity and creativity. This platform allows emerging artists to freely express themselves through art and paves the way to greater recognition of their talent and hard work. To date, ARTablado has mounted numerous exhibitions and hosted over 500 artists.

Catch Coldplay’s ‘Moon Music’ Dropping This October

Fans of Coldplay, mark your calendars! The band is set to drop their highly anticipated tenth studio album, Moon Music, on October 4, 2024. The journey to the stars doesn’t stop there; the album’s debut single, “feelslikeimfallinginlove,” will launch this Friday, June 21, to give fans a taste of the new sonic landscapes the band is exploring. The single can be presaved here. The band performed the song for the first time during their sold out stadium show at Budapest’s Puskás Aréna – see video here.

NEW FORMATS AND NEW SUSTAINABILITY STANDARDS

In tandem with Coldplay’s ground-breaking sustainability measures on their current tour – which has so far produced 59% less CO2e emissions than their previous stadium tour – the band have gone to great lengths to make the physical release of Moon Music as sustainable as possible.

This will be the world’s first album released as a 140g EcoRecord LP, with each copy made from 9 recycled PET-plastic bottles recovered from post-consumer waste. This will prevent the manufacture of more than 25 metric tonnes of virgin plastic, and provide an 85% reduction in manufacturing process CO2 emissions/kg compared to traditional 140g vinyl.

Additionally, the band have collaborated with long-time partners The Ocean Cleanup to create an additional format: the Notebook Edition EcoRecord LP. The rPET for this edition comprises 70% river plastic, intercepted by The Ocean Cleanup from the Rio Las Vacas, Guatemala, and prevented from reaching the Gulf of Honduras and the Atlantic Ocean. Check out The Ocean Cleanup’s video about the process here.

The CD editions of Moon Music will be the world’s first to be released on EcoCD, created from 90% recycled polycarbonate, sourced from post-consumer waste streams. This will provide at least a 78% CO2/kg emission reduction, and avoid the manufacture of more than five metric tonnes of virgin plastic.

    LIMITED FIRST EDITION RELEASE

In an effort to reduce waste, the first edition run of Moon Music (both EcoRecord LP and EcoCD) will be strictly limited and produced at a higher specification than any future editions. All First Edition EcoRecord LP products will be individually numbered.

Moon Music is available to pre-order now in four physical formats, all clearly marked as First Edition, with all EcoRecord rPET LP products individually numbered:

    • Standard EcoCD
    • Standard EcoRecord LP
    • Notebook Edition EcoCD
    • Notebook Edition EcoRecord LP + EcoCD

The Notebook Edition (EcoCD and EcoRecord LP) comes as a casebound hardback book. The book is a faithful replica of Chris Martin’s original studio notebook, featuring 28 pages of unseen notes, lyrics and illustrations from the album’s writing and recording process. The Notebook Edition also includes additional voice notes and demos from the album’s recording sessions, providing a special insight into the music’s development.

All formats are available to pre-order now on the band’s Official Store, with a limited number of hand-signed versions available, at store.coldplay.com.

Moon Music is Coldplay’s first album since 2021’s Music Of The Spheres, which spawned the US Number One single with BTS, My Universe, and was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. Music Of The Spheres has already accumulated more than four billion streams.

  • TRAVEL DIARIES: Singapore Grand Prix Through the Years

TRAVEL DIARIES: Singapore Grand Prix Through the Years

As a lifelong fan, my fascination with Formula 1 began back in 2004, right in the thick of the Michael Schumacher era. Those days, I would willingly sacrifice weekends to catch the races live, letting the outcomes dictate my mood for the start of the week. My allegiance? Firmly with Ferrari, both then and now.

Over the years, my enthusiasm only deepened. I devoured books on the subject, watched countless documentaries, and pored over every issue of F1 magazine, absorbing the intricate details of the sport. My visit to the Maranello factory in 2016 was particularly memorable. Standing at the gates, seeing the iconic prancing horse emblem, I couldn’t help but feel emotional; a testament to my journey from a mere fan to a true aficionado who appreciates every facet of this exhilarating sport.

    Singapore Grand Prix IMG 3114

Since 2008, with the exception of the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, I’ve been a regular at what is often heralded as the original night race in the Formula One calendar—the exhilarating Singapore Grand Prix. Fresh off a thrilling Monaco home race win by Charles Leclerc and a spectacular 1-2 Ferrari finish at the Marina Bay Circuit last year, my excitement is mounting as I prepare for my fifteenth visit to the Singapore GP this September.

Tip 1: Take advantage of early bird promotions for race tickets.

There have been many changes affecting both the event and the sport in general. Most notably, the sport’s skyrocketing fame has led to long-time fans welcoming new enthusiasts into the fold. Despite rising ticket prices, the interest in attending the races remains high, so securing tickets as early as possible is crucial. Tickets for next year’s race usually go on sale as early as the last day of this year’s race weekend.

But which ticket should you get? The ultimate choice will depend on the kind of access and experience you desire and, of course, your budget.

    Singapore Grand Prix IMG 5130

I’ve watched from all zones of the track and have used a variety of tickets, from walkabouts to sky suites. I highly recommend purchasing 3-day tickets to get more value for your money. If meeting the drivers is a must for you, ensure your ticket grants access to Zone 1. If you’re keen on the performances, choose a location with the most routes to the Padang Stage. For the best on-track action, the Turn 2 Grandstand offers one of the most spectacular views. Based on my experience, the Bay Grandstand is one of the best places to watch the race—the energy there is incredible, as it’s the largest grandstand.

Tip 2: Review the Track Map and Grand Prix Weekend Schedule in Advance.

This tip is crucial for planning your race weekend effectively. Although activities on the track typically occur from the afternoon into the late evening, it’s unlikely you’ll want to attend them all. Knowing the best entrance to use and the start times of the events you wish to attend will help you efficiently plan off-track activities. Locate local attractions near the gate you plan to use so you can ensure timely arrival for on-track events, even if you engage in non-F1 related activities.

Do not rely solely on the signage and volunteers inside the track for guidance. I make it a practice to visit the track early on Friday to scout out the best routes from my spot to various zones or areas I intend to visit.

While I used to appreciate the handy folded maps and event lists, in this digital age, it’s crucial to ensure you download the Singapore GP app.

    Tip 3: Pack Comfortable Clothing.

There will be a lot of walking and queueing, so choosing the right footwear is crucial.

The weather can be very unpredictable; I’ve experienced everything from scorching heat and thunderstorms to very humid conditions. It’s wise to check the weather forecast beforehand but also be prepared for sudden changes. Carrying a poncho might be a good idea, and don’t forget to wear plenty of sunscreen.

Earplugs used to be essential, but recently the engines have become much quieter. Whether you need them now will depend on your personal noise tolerance.

Tip 4: Book Flight and Hotel Accommodations Early.

We all know that the closer it gets to the event date, the more expensive flights and hotels become, so it’s wise to book early. Singapore offers a wide range of accommodations across all budget tiers, but you’ll be competing with countless other travelers from around the world who all want a place to stay that weekend. Ideally, you should try to book a place close to the track, but if budget constraints make this difficult, don’t worry. The Singapore transportation system is among the most efficient in the world. Just make sure to allot ample travel time to reach the track when you intend to be there.

Tip 5: Plan Your Nutrition and Hydration.

To stay energized throughout the night, it’s crucial to plan your meals properly. In recent years, what has worked best for me is having a hearty early dinner and then sneaking in some candies or chocolate bars. Although outside food is technically not allowed, I’ve never been stopped by security. I only bring enough to tide me over in case I decide to skip the food stalls altogether.

Given Singapore’s humidity, it’s also essential to stay hydrated. Last year, in addition to stalls selling drinks, there were hydration stations around the track where you could refill your water bottles for free. Be sure to know where the nearest station is located relative to your spot.

    Singapore Grand Prix IMG 4150

Stay informed with all the essential details about the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, taking place on Sunday, September 22. • Indoor fun for the whole family at Robinsons Galleria

Indoor fun for the whole family at Robinsons Galleria

The rainy season shouldn’t put a damper on family fun. Robinsons Galleria offers great ways for you to bond with your loved ones while staying safe and dry inside the mall.

Fun Park is now open at the Level 3 Edsa Wing. At this colorful indoor playground, kids ages 4 to 12 can climb, play and slide to their hearts’ content. There are cute animal-themed seats too for them and for their guardians.

But that’s not all. At Robinsons Malls, playing isn’t just for kids—it’s for the kids at heart, too. Robinsons Galleria has special spaces devoted to activities and sports the whole family can enjoy.

Challenge your loved ones to a game of foosball or two. There are also chess sets so you can battle against friends or maybe teach your kids the basics.

    photo 2

Want something more physical? There’s a table tennis area where you can have exciting matches.

    photo 3

Try something new too with subsoccer, also known as bench soccer, a game invented by a Finnish dad and his four-year-old daughter in 2008. Like in real football, you use your feet to play the game. But unlike football, you do it while sitting down. To score, sink the ball between the chair legs of your opponent. You might just get hooked.

Are cars more your thing? Robinsons Galleria has a dedicated track for Mini 4WD races. Their first-in-mall RC tracks are also really popular. They have a rally track and a drift track that you can enjoy, whether you’re an RC newbie or a real veteran.

The best part is that you can use all these play spots for free.

Just visit Guest Services to borrow the sports equipment.  Robinsons Galleria also offers amenities to make your stay at the mall comfortable—kiddie carts and pet strollers that you can borrow for free. They even have powerbanks that they can lend you if your phone is running out of juice.

  • Nature’s Comforting Touch: Discover the Soothing power Of Cica in Baby’s Delicate Skin

Nature’s Comforting Touch: Discover the Soothing power Of Cica in Baby’s Delicate Skin

Cuddling your little one – pure bliss, right? But for many moms, that joy can be overshadowed by a wave of worry when she sees tiny red patches, dry and flaky skin, or rashes on their baby’s delicate skin.

    Photo 2 1

But take a deep breath, mama! These skin imperfections are often just milestones in your baby’s skin development journey. Their skin barrier (think of it as their protective shield against the world) is still developing. This makes it more susceptible to reactions to temperature changes, humidity, friction from clothing, and even their movements.

This sensitivity can lead to dryness and irritation, causing discomfort for your little one. But don’t fret. There are simple steps you can take to help soothe and protect their budding skin barrier.

Transforming Skin Oh-Nos to Happy Coos: Your Baby’s Everyday Skincare Routine

Creating a nurturing skincare routine is simpler than you might think. Here are some of the first steps you can take to support and strengthen your baby’s underdeveloped skin barrier.

    1. Hydration is Key. Breastmilk or formula is key to keeping your baby well-hydrated, which plumps up the skin and prevents dryness.
    2. Dress for Comfort. Opt for soft, loose-fitting clothes that allow the skin to breathe and prevent irritation from rough fabrics.
    3. Limit Baths. Frequent baths can strip away natural oils. So when dryness or irritation strikes, skip a bath and shift to gentle cleansing.
    4. Ditch the Harsh Chemicals: Look for baby-specific products free of parabens, phthalates, silicones, and other harmful ingredients that can disrupt your baby’s delicate skin barrier. Remember, a quick label check is your best friend!
    5. Embrace Natural Solutions. Look for products specifically formulated for babies crafted with safe and natural ingredients that support a healthy skin barrier.

A-B-Cica to Healthy Baby Skin: Gentle Solutions for Soothing Comfort

If you’re searching for ways to nurture your baby’s delicate skin and promote a healthy skin barrier, the answer might lie in nature’s embrace. Meet Centella Asiatica, or Cica for short! This wonder plant boasts a 3,000-year history in folk medicine. Nicknamed “Tiger Grass” (legend has it tigers use it to heal their wounds!), Cica has long been valued in traditional Asian medicine for its ability to soothe irritated skin and promote wound healing. Even today, this natural powerhouse continues to impress, trending in adult skincare for its calming and soothing properties.

Cica isn’t just a fad, though! Human Nature recognizes its potential to comfort and protect even the most delicate skin—minus the harmful chemicals.

Here’s where Cica truly shines for your baby’s skin:

Alleviates Dryness: It helps draw and retain moisture in your baby’s skin, combating dryness and keeping it feeling soft and supple.

Boosts Hydration: Cica helps strengthen the skin barrier, preventing precious moisture from escaping and keeping your baby’s skin hydrated throughout the day.

Calms and Comforts: Known for its soothing properties, Cica calms irritation and repairs rough, dry, red patches. By addressing these concerns, Cica can help you keep your baby calm and comfy.
