Every LGBTQIA+ person’s journey of self-discovery is unique, filled with vibrant moments and sometimes, tough challenges. In celebration of Pride Month, Google Philippines hosted an insightful discussion featuring inspiring LGBTQIA+ YouTube creators Roanne Carreon, Joshua Cruz, Jan Angelo Ong, and Yani Villarosa.
The event, hosted by the multi-faceted creative and comedian Baus Rufo, highlighted the inspiring importance of self-discovery, building safe spaces, and finding your voice online of LGBTQIA+ YouTube creators Roanne Carreon, Joshua Cruz, Jan Angelo Ong, and Yani Villarosa.
“Finding your queer identity is a never-ending process. Even if you’re out and seem like you have it all figured out, you’re still building that equation for your truth, and your authenticity. That’s why communities and representation matter because you need them to constantly be shown that these are the many possibilities that you have access to [as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community],” Baus Rufo said.
Finding Your Truth: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Building Safe Spaces
Coming out and embracing your sexual orientation and gender identity can be a rollercoaster ride for many LGBTQIA+ individuals. It’s a personal process, and there’s no pressure to have it all figured out right away. With the rise of platforms like YouTube, it’s now easier to find content that showcases different facets of LGBTQIA+ lives and their experiences in discovering their identity offering valuable insights and a sense of belonging.
“No one is pressuring you to come out, only do it when you’re ready. If you’re still figuring things out, you can Google resources to educate yourself and also find YouTube creators that resonate with your queer journey,” Joshua Cruz said. The lifestyle creator also admitted that they didn’t need to come out because of their supportive family. Joshua is paying it forward by being supportive of their viewers’ LGBTQIA+ journey, encouraging them to express themselves freely.
Yani Villarosa said it’s also important for influential creators like herself to remind her social media followers to slow down. “Social media can be so fast-paced that people feel the need to broadcast everything. When they see others coming out, they might feel that they have to match their pace. It’s really important to tell them to slow down, especially if they look up to you.”
Despite the belief that the Philippines welcomes LGBTQIA+ members , many queer Filipinos struggle to express their true selves out of fear of discrimination and prejudice from loved ones. The lack of support could also make it hard to explore their sexuality and gender identity, which is why they turn to LGBTQIA+ creators and communities where they can meet like-minded people with similar experiences.
For Roanne Carreon, who is one-half of YouTube channel Roanne and Tina and co-founder of Queer Safe Spaces (QSS), it’s about providing support and representation, especially to young LGBTQIA+ members. “Growing up, we didn’t have role models, representation, and resources to educate people about LGBTQIA+ members. That’s why we do what we do: We wanted to create a community that can become a support system for members, especially if they’re still navigating their sexuality. It started out small, and now, we’re over 17,000 strong and we formalized QSS as a nonprofit organization,” she said.
Roanne added that being authentic and vulnerable is crucial to build relatability with their audience. This is why she and her partner Tina Boado showcase the good and ugly of their relationship in order to normalize what a regular day looks like for a WLW (women-loving-women) couple. “Our channel is a mix of fun things we do as a couple and educational content. We also talk about our mental health struggles in our videos.”
Yani is also candid about showing the “messy” sides of being a bisexual woman, who initially wasn’t accepted by her family when she came out in senior high school. “I created a safe space, not only for myself, but also for my listeners by being vulnerable about my experiences as a queer woman. I’ve shown that you’re allowed to be confused and messy, and people realize that it’s all normal. They managed to find a community that helped them realize that they’re not alone in their struggle.”
This goes to show YouTube’s impact in helping LGBTQIA+ people in navigating their self-discovery, and also show them that they can achieve so much if they live their most authentic selves. “YouTube is that vehicle that allows for a safe space to let people dream,” Jan Angelo Ong said.
Allyship and kindness go a long way for LGBTQIA+
Rec•Create founder Allison Barretto, who is one of Jan’s closest allies, believes that being an ally to the LGBTQIA+ isn’t a difficult task. “It’s so easy to love people from the community and accept them as human. You just have to be a decent human being,” she said. “Start small, recognize your privilege, step up and show up for your LGBTQIA+ friends.”
Icoy Rapadas, who is Roanne and Tina’s ally, echoed the sentiment of being kind to others. He also acknowledged the privilege of being a cisgender heterosexual man, admitting that he had to unlearn many things and educated himself to become a good ally. “I want to make sure that LGBTQIA+ people are comfortable around me, and to inform my straight friends that it’s not okay to say certain things about LGBTQIA+ people,” he said.
The LGBTQIA+ community needs allies who will celebrate their identity and lend a helping hand, even in the smallest ways, when they’re struggling. Whether they’re family, friends, or a colleague, they are the people who can help LGBTQIA+ people live happily and confidently.
“You don’t have to go the extra mile to help LGBTQIA+ members, but it wouldn’t kill anyone to be informed,” said Bryan Larosa, Joshua’s best friend and ally. “Learn how to respect each and every one regardless of their gender and preference. I think that’s the most you can do.”
Humanity is at the brink of destruction, and the cure might entail the ultimate cost. Love You as the World Ends follows a group of survivors fighting for their lives and their loved ones as the Golem virus turns the majority of the human race into rabid zombies.
Hotta Mayu plays the role of Aoi, a nurse stationed at the top of Utopia, a refuge for survivors. The research team tasked to find the cure made their base of operations on the top levels, and Aoi is a witness to the horrible atrocities the scientists committed in desperate search for the cure. Her main task is to care for Mirai, deemed the “Miracle Child,” as she is suspected to contain the cure for the Golem virus ravaging humanity. Mirai is the child of the lead character Hibiki, who is on a mission to save her from her fate, at the cost of ending the apocalyptic outbreak. His partner, Kurumi, was infected and consumed by the Golem virus, but managed to give birth to Mirai before succumbing. This has led the researchers to believe that Mirai might have the right antibodies to fight off the deadly virus. Aoi is being pursued by Yamato, who is desperately climbing up Utopia to reach the girl he loves.
An exclusive model for “Non-no” magazine, Hotta Mayu started out in drama series. She’s known for her roles in manga film adaptations such as Ikumatsu in Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning, and Serina Kanno in the film adaptation of Honey Lemon Soda. Hotta won Best Newcomer in the 4th Yokohama film festival for her role in Tsugaru Lacquer Girl, and is the 48th Elan d’or Awards’ Newcomer of the Year.
Watch them try to survive long enough to reunite with their loved ones as Love You as the World Ends opens in PH cinemas on June 12, an Encore Films film distributed by Warner Bros.
Disney and Pixar’s highly anticipated sequel, “Inside Out 2,” is set to hit cinemas nationwide next week, on June 12. Picking up from the last scene of the beloved 2015 film “Inside Out,” the new installment delves into the vibrant and tumultuous world of Riley’s mind as she steps into her teenage years.
A Journey Through Puberty
“Inside Out 2” begins with the ominous red button hinting at Riley turning 13, signaling the onset of the challenging and equally beautiful stage of puberty. The original film introduced viewers to the colorful characters representing Riley’s emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, as she navigated the significant changes that came with moving to a new city. It brought to light the complexity of emotions and the concept of ‘core memories,’ opening up meaningful conversations between kids and parents about feelings.
It’s Demo Day in Riley’s Mind!
Now a teenager, Riley’s mind undergoes significant changes. In the Headquarters, a demolition crew arrives, preparing to make room for new Emotions, concepts, and locations. The trailer hints at the excitement and chaos this transformation will bring. What new experiences and lessons await Riley? What fresh concepts will she discover?
Belief Systems and Sense of Self
Every demolition marks the beginning of new construction, much like Riley’s ‘Belief System.’ This sacred space, interwoven with strings connected to Riley’s memories, plays a crucial role in decision-making and navigating the world. As old beliefs crumble to make way for new ones, Riley’s Emotions will clash, reshaping her ‘Belief System’ and influencing her future choices.
Alongside this, Riley’s ‘Sense of Self’ will be introduced, symbolizing the essence of her true inner self. This core aspect of identity is central to understanding the person Riley is becoming.
The Chaos of a Teenage Mind
Capturing the essence of teenage chaos, Riley’s mind features the ‘Back of the Mind,’ a place where non-urgent thoughts are stored for later consideration, and ‘The Vault,’ a secure repository for all her secrets. These elements add depth and realism to the portrayal of Riley’s mental landscape, reflecting the complexities teenagers face.
A Relatable and Fun Experience for All Ages
“Inside Out 2” promises to be a chaotically fun and refreshing film that viewers of all ages can enjoy and relate to. As Riley navigates her expanding world and the intricate dynamics of her Emotions, audiences are invited to join her on this exciting journey.
So, gather your barkada or family for a cinematic experience filled with laughter and the creation of new core memories. “Inside Out 2” premieres in cinemas nationwide on June 12!
I completely missed out on the third installment of the ‘Bad Boys’ series of films, the buddy cop action comedy starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. I remember seeing the first two films, but I have completely forgotten most of the details of ‘Bay Boys II’ and as the opening of ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ reveals, there are many major events that happened in ‘Bad Boys for Life’ that are sort of needed in being able to follow this fourth installment in the franchise. The details aren’t that integral to the overall understanding of the movie, but you may be surprised (as I was) about certain things like the characters played by Vanessa Hudgens, Paola Nunez, and Alexander Ludwig and that Smith’s Mike Lowrey has a son (played by Jacob Scipio).
In this installment of the franchise, Will Smith’s Mike Lowrey and Martin Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett are caught in the crossfire as their former captain, Joe Pantoliano’s Captain Howard, now deceased, appears in the film as a video and dream sequence while being set up to take the fall by the cartel. Lowrey and Burnett will have none of it and as they try to uncover who in the Miami police department is working with the cartel to tarnish the name of the captain, they end up being framed as murderers and accomplices, along with Mike’s son Armando Aretas (Scipio). Aretas is key here because he’s the only one who has seen the villain’s face (played by Eric Dane).

Now fugitives of the law, Lowrey, Burnett, Scipio, and the rest of their team must work to clear their names and stop the cartel from carrying out their plans.
To further complicate things, Burnett suffers a heart attack, an experience that leaves him feeling both immortal and spiritual. On the other hand, the newly married Mike Lowrey must also deal with his own mortality and the fact that his very dangerous life means that his new wife (Melanie Liburd) maybe a widow before the end of the film. These two aspects address the fact that both lead actors are in their 50s. It adds a layer to the proceedings, one that Lawrence mines for all its comedic potential (which is golden if Lawrence’s humor is up your alley) and creates a softness for Smith to chew on for his character.

But outside of this added layer for the characters to play with, the film operates like an old-school 90s action film. It has a vibe and morality akin to the original ‘Bad Boys’ from 1995. Smith’s and Lawrence’s antics are loud and explosive. There’s a macho/testosterone-driven comedy that pervades the film’s tone. The opening scene is Mike driving extremely fast as he appears to be late to a wedding (later on we discover it is his). For a policeman, driving this fast is highly unusual, but considering it’s Miami and it’s Will Smith, the comedic tone of the film asks us to forgive their recklessness. It’s America too, so some jokes involve Smith taking out his gun and pointing it to Lawrence’s Marcus, who is annoying the hell out of Mike with his pseudo-spiritual tirades and belief in his own immortality. Some people try to stop him and call him out (thankfully) but Lowrey quickly hushes them down. He’s a cop so he’s allowed.
Martin Lawrence stars in Columbia Pictures BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE. Photo by: Frank Masi
This 90s era morality and humor runs through this film but with the directorial styles of Adil & Bilall, it has a pace and an energy that is fit for the TikTok generation. The film’s editing is fast, leaving very little moments to ponder on mortality or morality. The film is jumping from plot point to plot point, from Martin Lawrence joke to Will Smith action pose. When the guns start blazing, it’s loud and geared for excitement. The best fight scenes, though, are given to the younger actors of the film. Jacob Scipio’s Armando engages in an exquisitely brutal fight scene in a prison involving weights, hitting hard and impressing. Meanwhile, Dennis Greene, who plays Marcus’ son-in-law, gets a really nice fight scene mid-movie that plays off like a video game.

In fact, aside from social media videos, ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ also takes a lot from video games as it captures a segment of the final face off in the style of a first-person shooter game.
In all honesty, ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ is not my kind of movie. It absolves its heroes of their most toxic traits because they are the good guys as well as it glorifies and romanticizes the violence that the good guys take to solving the problem. But as I was sitting in a packed theater while watching this movie, I also noticed the laughter from the people around me and the electricity in the theater that showed that this dynamic still has a lot of juice left in it. The fact that it takes the old-school route showed that they knew their market and what it took to keep them happy.
For what it was: a traditional, classic action comedy film, ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ checks all the boxes. And just in case people have not forgiven Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, well, that’s referenced in the movie too (and it got the loudest reactions from the audience).
Ishana Night Shyamalan, in her feature debut, weaves fantasy and horror together in “The Watchers,” taking audiences on a thrilling journey deep within the forests of Ireland. “The movie is very much a journey of uncovering this mystery—figuring out who these creatures are and what they want. Why are they being watched?” Shyamalan explains.
An Intriguing Setting: The Coop
To create the eerie atmosphere where the mysterious Watchers can observe the trapped individuals, Shyamalan meticulously designed the coop. “The coop is such an intriguing place, and it gave us so much to play with and think about when designing the build. In essence, it’s an observatory, but it works two ways—you are looking out, but you’re also being watched,” she says. “We were really drawn to the idea of almost a play with very theatrical elements and lighting—where any moment you are being observed and on display. That can be a very uncomfortable feeling. So, we leaned into brutalist architecture, and the colors and textures associated with it.”
Dakota Fanning on the Unsettling Coop
Dakota Fanning, who plays Mina, delves into the unsettling nature of the coop and being one of the characters trapped inside. “The coop’s purpose is to keep these four characters safe from the Watchers, and to also provide a way for the Watchers to watch them. There’s a big window that turns into a mirror at night,” Fanning explains. “At first, we filmed mostly with the mirror in, so you were kind of forced to look at yourself, which was a little bit strange at first, but it was also helpful, because it added to the uneasiness that the characters might also feel.”
Experience the Mystery
Step inside the coop and uncover the truth as “The Watchers” is now showing in Philippine cinemas. Tickets are available at www.thewatchers.com.ph.
From producer M. Night Shyamalan comes “The Watchers,” written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan and based on the novel by A.M. Shine. The film follows Mina, a 28-year-old artist, who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.
Joining Shyamalan behind the camera are director of photography Eli Arenson (“Lamb,” “Hospitality”), production designer Ferdia Murphy (“Lola,” “Finding You”), editor Job ter Burg (“Benedetta,” “Elle”), and costume designer Frank Gallacher (“Sebastian,” “Aftersun”). The music is by Abel Korzeniowski (“Till,” “The Nun”).
In cinemas June 5, 2024, “The Watchers” is distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Discovery company.
