  • REVIEW: A total theatrical experience, ‘Mula sa Buwan’ dazzles with Gab Pangilinan taking center stage

REVIEW: A total theatrical experience, ‘Mula sa Buwan’ dazzles with Gab Pangilinan taking center stage

I saw ‘Mula sa Buwan’ a few years ago, straight out of the pandemic, and as well lauded as the show was, I personally found it chaotic despite the fantastic songs and the incredible singers who were cast in that show. I couldn’t quite get into it then but that show alone showed all of Gab Pangilinan’s star power and her capacity to fill a stage with her presence and vocal chops. Coming to see this revival of the show, still at the Samsung Performance Arts Theater, the new direction by Mikko Angeles expands the stage work to include video projections that manages to amplify the narrative and creates a whimsical, almost fairy-tale like quality to the show (and a dark twisted one later in Act 2) and somehow centers the emotional weight on Pangilinan’s Roxane. It was a clever move because Pangilinan has really pushed herself to a level, I’d like to say is equal to “national treasure” because not only can she sing, but she infuses the work with all the emotions of the scene that it fills the whole theater with electricity.

    Review Mula Sa Buwan

‘Mula sa Buwan’ is a Filipino adaptation of ‘Cyrano de Bergerac.’ Set in Manila, right before World War II, the play follows Cyrano (Myke Salomon), a poetic genius with a comically large nose. He is known about town as a poet, a stern ROTC commander, friendly to the outcasts of society, and seems unafraid to use his wits and skills to best anyone he feels does not live up to his standards for a civilized life. At the show’s beginning, he comes off as a bully, breaking up a theatrical show for not having authenticity and making a fool out of his commanding officer, the son of a general, for his uncouth ways. But Cyrano finds himself in a sticky situation as the love of his life (and childhood best friend) Roxane has fallen in love with the handsome Christian (MC Dela Cruz), who has just come to town and is stationed under Cyrano in ROTC.

Insecure over his appearance, Cyrano accepts Roxane’s request to ensure that Christian is to be kept from trouble and when he discovers that Christian feels the same way as Roxane, he orchestrates a deception to get the two together. The thing is, Christian is not good with words and can be very clumsy, and Roxane has a poet’s heart and is attracted to wit and eloquence. Under the cover of night, Christian serenades Roxane while she’s on her balcony with Cyrano hiding in the darkness feeding him the words.

Mula Sa BuwanCyrano Christian Roxane by Jaypee Maristaza

It’s the classic mistaken identity love story trope that no longer feels as romantic in the midst of 2024 sexual politics. In the current climate, what Christian and Cyrano do is catfishing – no matter how good their intentions may be – and Roxane was made to be a fool. The era nor the poetry of Pat Valera’s script can soften that so what Mikko Angeles does is to play up Cyrano’s and Christian’s selfishness. He doesn’t hide from it but he plays it up. In fact, there’s an old school theatricality to the performances – the line delivery and the blocking – which highlights the naivete of the time. It’s crucial for the emotional shift that happens on Act 2.

Mula Sa BuwanMC Dela Cruz as Christian Gab Pangilinan as Roxane by Jaypee Maristaza

Because World War 2 does come and the playful romance and idealism of Act 1 is torn asunder and reality kicks in so when Roxane is forced to face heartache and pain caused by the war, Pangilinan brings all that pain, built up since Act 1, into a powerful solo that brings the house down that even I was in tears. Roxane is the heart of this production and by putting her at the center, played with by the two boys and their affection for her, the sting of the second act hits harder.

It’s not a perfect show, though. There’s a whole section in the play about the ‘Makulay na Kabataan,’ a group of outcasts (queer people and artists) who are fighting for freedom and independence but there’s no real feeling of oppression that pervades the first act. There is talk of independence, but never do we ever really feel the American occupation haunting the scenes. The title song, ‘Mula sa Buwan’ is a call for a place that is more forgiving, a place that is free from oppression but there’s none of the things that they are wishing for is seen in the play. The love story is front and center but the going-ons in the background feel empty and hollow. What are the colorful children protesting against? Why do they need independence when they can put up plays and sing out in the streets? Anything outside of Cyrano, Roxane, and Christian’s love triangle seems more like filler than something that is integral to the show nor does it inform on the love story itself.

    Mula Sa Buwan 2024 Poster

With that said, this production of ‘Mula sa Buwan’ is still a total theatrical experience. The set designs by Ohm David are brilliant. It’s a barrage of moving sets with strange perspective that really amplifies the whimsical tone of the show. It’s immersive in a way that it feels that the world is large and wide and deep. The lighting design Meliton Roxas Jr magically illuminates the most important parts of the scene that allows us to follow the story (though I do wish the balcony sequence was just a bit darker to really sell the idea that Roxane can’t see who she is talking to) while the video projections of Joyce Garcia is immensely transformative turning the show into a fairytale. Myke Salomon’s musical score creates urgency and builds emotions. The first song of the second act is absolutely brilliant.

And the performances – Myke Salomon, Gab Pangilinan, MC Dela Cruz, Phi Palmos, Jillian Ita-as, and Jerom Canlas – fantastic singers and dancers and are able to carry the comedy as well as the romance and then the sudden dramatic shift for Act 2. It’s a total theatrical experience that is so inspiring to see on the Philippine stage.

The Action Sequences in “Transformers One” Are Insane, Says Chris Hemsworth

When Chris Hemsworth signed on as part of the star-studded voice cast for “Transformers One,” he thought he’d just be sitting in a chair, reading lines.

Watch Hemsworth talk about voicing Orion Pax in the “Chris on the Physicality” featurette:

“The action sequences in this film are insane,” says the actor in a new featurette. “It actually takes a lot more physicality than I first assumed. I thought I’d just be sitting in a chair, reading lines. But I was jumping around and having to throw punches and make noise. There’s a lot of excitement and a lot of fun.”

In Transformers One, the first-ever fully CG-animated Transformers movie, Hemsworth voices Orion Pax/Optimus Prime. Transformers One is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever. Hemsworth is joined by Brian Tyree Henry (D-16/Megatron), Scarlett Johansson (Elita-1), Keegan-Michael Key (B-127), Steve Buscemi (Starscream), Laurence Fishburne (Alpha Trion) and Jon Hamm (Sentinel Prime).

“Feels fantastic to be officially part of the Transformers franchise,” says Hemsworth in another featurette. “What intrigued me was the origin story. Two best friends that become enemies, and then the birth of a hero.”

  • MOVIE REVIEW: When Love Is Not Enough: a review of ‘Un/Happy for You’

MOVIE REVIEW: When Love Is Not Enough: a review of ‘Un/Happy for You’

The romance genre in the Philippines has taken a more realistic turn since Antoinette Jadaone’s ‘That Thing Called Tadhana.’ While the kilig is still the driving force that pushes these films, movies like ‘Never Not Love You,’ ‘Sid & Aya: Not a Love Story,’ ‘Alone Together,’ and similar blockbuster films in that same vein has pushed our romantic films towards a more realistic tone: fighting for the belief that one must fix themselves first before one even thinks about pursuing love.

Petersen Vargas’ ‘Un/Happy for You’ illustrates what happens when one throws themselves into a relationship before they have solidified who they are as a person. It plays off, first as a romantic comedy before shifting gears into a romantic drama as it navigates the truth of the history behind the breakup of the two leads, Juancho and Zy.

The two protagonists meet in Bicol during a chili eating contest. Zy is desperate to join but needed a partner and took with her the first person she saw, which was Juancho. Sparks fly as the heat of the spicy Bicolano food explodes in their mouths and the two share a passionate kiss. Then six years pass, and Juancho is now owner and chef of a popular restaurant in Naga City called Casa Rosa. While inviting a VIP to his restaurant that evening to invest in his expansion to Manila, he sees Zy again after all this time. He decides to invite Zy to the restaurant – in fact, he pretty much forces her to go – despite the fact that it seems they did not break up in the best of terms.

    Movie Review UnHappy for You

While preparing food for her, we discover that Juancho and Zy broke up two years ago and he has held a grudge for the way that she left him and plans to take his revenge. Zy is in town to research for an article she’s writing about Bicolano food for her writing job in New York. Juancho uses all his connections to make things difficult for her but in the process, his feelings are returning (or have they never left?) and it seems that Zy herself may be feeling the same way.

Vargas excellently uses the film’s tone and aesthetic to amplify the charm of Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto to its fullest extent. Both actors have such powerful onscreen presence, and they can fill the cinema screen with their charisma. Garcia has that everyman quality while being ridiculously good-looking and Julia Barretto shines and commands attention, her beauty pushing through even though her make-up looks way too heavy in many scenes. There’s an electricity that jumps out of the two when they share scenes together and Vargas is masterful at setting up the camera to highlight this for its full effect. Noel Teehankee’s cinematography helps create the glossy sheen necessary to sell this love story.

But the script by Kookai Labayen, Crystal San Miguel, and Jen Chuaunsu (from a story by Kookai Labayan, Crystal San Miguel, and Simon Lloyd Arciaga) is tricky and clever. At first, Zy is completely framed from Juancho’s perspective so it attempts to justify Juancho’s unfair revenge, but things take a more painful turn when Juancho goes way too far, conflating his feelings of hate and love for Zy, and crossing the line.

And when the camera switches to show Zy’s side of the story, the film becomes an exploration of the toxic way that many immature people can love and hurt the people they care about the most. Following the trend of the smarter romantic movies that have come out in the past ten or fifteen years, ‘Un/Happy for You’ becomes another reminder that love is not always the answer and that love, when not managed by reason, can be such a destructive force.

    UnHappy For You

With Joshua Garcia as the vessel of this, it softens the blow and gives the audience leeway to be forgiving. But when you take away Petersen Vargas’ excellent use of mainstream film language and the explosive chemistry of Garcia and Barretto, what we have is the story of a very toxic person who manages to ruin people’s lives in the name of love.

Being an ABS-CBN film (co-produced by Viva), there are safe places for these characters to land and so you can expect that the hardships these characters will face will be softer than what they deserve – though, in my opinion, Zy deserves better – but the film needs to be in that mode to catch the audience off-guard so that it can deliver its most striking messages with full impact. It has all the trappings one could ask for in a mainstream romantic movie but there’s a lot more that the film is trying to do underneath and except for the film’s odd final line (that doesn’t quite make sense, when you take into account everything that has happened) the film really hits all the right notes and is another showcase for Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto’s talents and star power.

    My Rating:

    stars 4 0

Both singles also cracked the triple j Hottest 100, as did the fan-favorite single “BLEED” (which LAROI says is his favorite song he has ever written). “NIGHTS LIKE THIS” went viral on TikTok earlier this year, with streams surpassing 100 million. “LOVE AGAIN” also saw LAROI nominated for two APRA Awards and two ARIA Awards, including ‘Best Solo Artist’ and ‘Song of the Year’. LAROI was the #2 Most Streamed Australian Artist for 2023 on Spotify, and earlier this year, he unveiled his documentary Kids Are Growing Up.

With over 43 million monthly listeners on Spotify, more than 2 billion views on YouTube, and a recent 31-date North American run alongside Lil Baby, LAROI’s effortless talent and raw charisma are undeniable.
