Review — Made Only for the MOAs, ‘Tomorrow X Together: Hyperfocus’ Doesn’t Quite Reach All Audiences

There is something to be said about a full immersive cinema experience. I’m a purist about cinema and trying to simulate what is happening on screen for the audience seated in the theater feels like a novelty more suited to a theme park than the world of film and movies. The power of books and movies and music is that the connection is made by the imagination that links our lives with what we experience on the page or the screen or what we hear in our ears. The history of film has shown us that just what we see and hear, projected on to that screen, can take us to different times and worlds and situations and allow us to truly experience a lifetime. Wind machines, scented spritzers, and a moving chair does not bring me closer into the world of the film, it takes me away from it and that’s one of the many barriers that got in the way for me to enjoy ‘Tomorrow X Together: Hyperfocus in Cinemas.’

Concert Film Review Tomorrow X Together Hyperfocus

The film is less than an hour long and it’s a showcase of the K-pop idol group TXT as they sing six songs from their discography in a wide range of virtual sets and caps off with a behind-the-scenes look at the shoot with the virtual reality studio. It’s not a concert video. It feels more like a showcase that’s akin to an extended Studio Choom dance video (if you’re a K-pop fan, you know what Studio Choom; if not, take a look at it on YouTube). As a K-pop fan myself, I can see that this release is intended specifically for TXT’s fandom, called MOAs. It’s a nice way for someone who is not familiar with them, like myself, to get to know them and their music – I for one took note of the second and the fourth song that they sang, ‘Magic Island’ and ‘Tinnitus (I Want to Be a Rock)’ and added them to my own playlist – see them dance and get to know their faces (as the camera comes in really close to the absolute delight of the fans in the audience with me). But there were many barriers of the release that got in the way.

    TXT EDIT Final 41053

First off, ‘Tomorrow X Together: Hyperfocus’ is a virtual augmented release. I think you are supposed to watch this with special VR goggles that can help you see the added effects to the scene. There are no goggles for this VR enhancement so what we see is a green screen CGI background behind the boys that looks fake and flat. Without the VR goggles, the intended effect doesn’t jump out.

    TXT EDIT Final 04573

Next, there are no subtitles and there are two spiels that happen between every two songs and then the finale. If you’re familiar with K-pop concerts, you know when to cheer and when to scream and the boys even react accordingly as if the audience does (in the cinema I was in, only one fourth of the audience knew when to make noise and did so obediently). Surprisingly, the five boys – Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai – don’t have enough space for their personalities to really shine. They are relating to a camera and without the audience and the energy from a live crowd coming their way, they can only do so much to let their presence be felt. The fans in the cinema were enjoying it but as a newbie, I still didn’t get to see who they were.

    TXT Photozone copy image reference

And then the 4DX experience made it even harder to enjoy as the seats shook and jolted along with the choreography while the bass manifested as a pulsing vibration right at your back. This would actually take me out of the moment rather than immerse me into that world because my energy was being dictated for me. I’ve been to K-pop concerts and the joy and rush of energy from seeing my idols would force me from my seat and to stand up and cheer and dance along the beat. Here, I do not have that option. I’ll fall off, for sure.

Not exactly a concert film but not exactly a documentary that allows for new audiences to find their way into the fandom, ‘Tomorrow X Together: Hyperfocus’ is a peculiar release, especially without the subtitles and the virtual reality augmentation that would probably only serve to interest the true-blue MOAs of the country.

“Wolf Man”: A Gripping Tribute to Classic Monsters and Bone-Chilling Body Horror

Experience the fear and transformation as “Wolf Man” pays homage to the golden age of monsters, blending practical effects with a chilling tale of survival.

    Abbott WolfMan 1

A Monster Reborn: Honoring Horror Classics

Director Leigh Whannell breathes new life into the iconic “Wolf Man” with a tribute to the classic Universal monsters. Inspired by the artistry behind Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein and Lon Chaney Jr.’s Wolf Man, Whannell states, “If you think about that look that was created for Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein in 1931 or Lon Chaney’s Wolf Man in 1941, those were things that audiences had never seen,” Whannell says. “Those images have lasted because they’re so striking. Anybody dealing with monsters today lives in the shadow of these artists. Every makeup artist whose name is etched into the Hall of Fame—from Rick Baker and Rob Bottin to Stan Winston and Jack Pierce, all these artists have created something brilliant that sticks in your mind.”

The Story of the Lovells: A Family in Peril

Set against the eerie backdrop of rural Oregon, “Wolf Man” follows the Lovell family as their patriarch, Blake (played by Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott), transforms into a creature of legend. As Blake succumbs to his monstrous instincts, his wife Charlotte (Emmy winner Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) fight for survival. But can they endure both the creature outside and the horror within?

Blake’s transformation is not only physical but deeply emotional, illustrating the terror of losing one’s humanity. Whannell’s focus on body horror shines as Blake’s skin morphs, his senses distort, and his humanity fades. “Blake loses his ability to understand what human beings are saying,” Whannell says. “Blake’s vision changes, then the physical changes begin, and his vision begins to alter. His skin morphs: his fingernails and teeth come out. It’s a tribute to body horror. That’s one of the great sub-genres of horror that I love. Our bodies are the source of all our pain, as well as our joy.”

    A Practical Effects Showcase

Whannell’s passion for 80s horror cinema permeates the film, emphasizing practical effects over CGI for a tactile and immersive experience. Inspired by classics like The Thing and The Fly, the director explains, “When you’re working in supernatural horror, a lot of the horror is implied,” Whannell says. “It’s what you can’t see that’s scary. I wanted to make my own version of a creature feature. This film is my tribute to the ‘80s movies I loved growing up—ones that were driven by practical effects and told horror stories that were creative in their use of bodily morphing. In The Thing and The Fly, CGI was not yet an option.”

From elongated limbs to agonizing transformations, “Wolf Man” delivers a visual feast that honors the craftsmanship of past monster films while pushing the genre forward.

    Ginger Charlotte

Meet the Cast and Crew Behind the Terror

“Wolf Man” boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including:

Supporting roles feature talents like Sam Jaeger (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Benedict Hardie (The Invisible Man). Behind the scenes, Leigh Whannell teams up with Blumhouse Productions, known for redefining horror with hits like The Invisible Man and Upgrade. Jason Blum and Ryan Gosling also bring their expertise as producers, promising a cinematic experience that blends artistry with terror.

“Paddington in Peru” Brings Laughter, Adventure, and Heartwarming Moments This January!

The beloved bear is back! Paddington in Peru, the third installment in the Paddington film series, promises a delightful mix of humor, heart, and adventure. With an all-star cast and a heartwarming story, the marmalade-loving bear embarks on a thrilling new journey set to captivate audiences of all ages.

    Paddington2

What’s New in Paddington in Peru?

Director Dougal Wilson steps in to helm the franchise, taking over from Paul King, who directed the first two films. Wilson embraces the challenge, saying, “These films and the character of Paddington himself have become very cherished, beloved and have essentially created a lot of anticipation for a bit more Paddington,” he says. “That’s why I’m really excited for audiences to see the next part of the story that we’ve decided to tell. It’s obviously a huge responsibility and quite nerve-wracking, but I really hope this new chapter will be full of surprises and an appropriate expansion of Paddington’s world.”

Ben Whishaw, returning as the voice of Paddington, shares his enthusiasm: “After the success of the first two films, you couldn’t help but feel trepidatious about what the next film might involve. There is also a sense of pressure to not repeat the same thing. But I thought the concept was great because it is much more of an adventure than the other films. Paddington is much more in a position of jeopardy and risk. I thought it was very exciting, very funny, and moving too, so I was super excited by it.”

Emily Mortimer joins the cast as Mrs. Brown, praising the story’s inventive script. ““I just loved the adventure of this script. I thought it was so enjoyable and so inventive,” she says. Meanwhile, Samuel Joslin and Madeleine Harris, reprising their roles as Jonathan and Judy Brown, marvel at the film’s larger scale and action-packed sequences.

    A New Adventure Unfolds

The story takes Paddington and the Brown family to the heart of the Amazon rainforest. When Aunt Lucy goes missing from the Home for Retired Bears, Paddington discovers a mysterious map that leads him to Peru. What follows is a whirlwind of suspense, humor, and heartwarming moments as they uncover ancient treasures and navigate jungle dangers.

    Meet the Star-Studded Cast

The film brings back fan favorites Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton, and Ben Whishaw. Newcomers include Emily Mortimer, Olivia Colman, Carla Tous, and Antonio Banderas, adding more star power to the beloved series.

Director Jeff Fowler Calls “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” Cast ‘The Best Imaginable’ – In Cinemas January 15

The highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 returns to cinemas with a stellar lineup of familiar faces and exciting new additions. Directed by Jeff Fowler, the film promises heart-pounding action, stunning visuals, and plenty of humor, with its all-star cast leading the charge.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Knuckles Sonic Tails

    A Blockbuster Ensemble

Director Jeff Fowler beams with pride as he reveals the cast.

“We could not be more excited,” says director Jeff Fowler. “We’ve got Ben Schwartz back voicing Sonic; Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails; Idris Elba as Knuckles; James Marsden as the Donut Lord – aka Sheriff Tom Wachowski – Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski; and the incomparable Jim Carrey in not just one, but two key roles. Robotnik’s henchman Agent Stone is once again played by Lee Majdoub. Natasha Rothwell and Shemar Moore have cameos as newlyweds Rachel and Randall. Adam Pally drops in as everybody’s favorite goofy Deputy Wade. And last but not least, our new character, Shadow the Hedgehog, is played by Keanu Reeves. It’s the best cast imaginable.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Gerald Robotnik Shadow Ivo Robotnik Agent Stone
Gerald Robotnik, Shadow, Ivo Robotnik, Agent Stone

Reeves voices Shadow the Hedgehog, a fan-favorite character teased in Sonic 2. Reeves teases the character’s complexity:

“Sonic can’t compete with him at the beginning, but he’s a quick learner. Visually, it’s very exciting. There’s such a spirit of fun and surprise that’s also connected to emotional authenticity for the characters. That allows you to empathize with them.”

    A Bigger, Bolder Sonic Adventure

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails face their toughest challenge yet: Shadow, the ultimate life form. Together, they must forge an unexpected alliance to save the planet from destruction.

Ben Schwartz describes Sonic as “a flurry of manic energy and humor,” adding:

Anyone who likes the earlier films will love this one, promises Schwartz. “We’ve exploded the boundaries,” he says. “There are fights in outer space. There are two different Robotniks. The ultimate life form will destroy the world if the team of Knuckles, Tails and Sonic can’t stop him. This is Sonic’s toughest fight yet and he gets knocked on his butt a couple of times, but he comes back hard.”

The stakes are higher than ever, with explosive battles—including one in outer space—and emotional story arcs that deepen the franchise’s lore.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Director Rockwell
    Krysten Ritter as Director Rockwell

    Behind the Scenes Magic

Jim Carrey doubles the mischief by portraying both Dr. Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik. Fowler calls Carrey’s involvement transformative:

“It’s going to be amazing for audiences to see what Jim does with it,” says Fowler. “He had so many funny ideas for the characters. He’s been involved in every little aspect of the Robotnik world, including all of his interactions with his sidekick Agent Stone.”

Fowler also praised Krysten Ritter’s addition as Director Rockwell of G.U.N., whose skepticism of Team Sonic adds tension and intrigue.

“She’s not exactly on Sonic’s side for a good deal of the movie, which creates some interesting layers for the story,” says Fowler.

Sonic Fans: This One’s For You

Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who has voiced Tails for years, appreciates the passion of Sonic fans:

“The love that I’ve gotten playing this character has just been tremendous,” she says. “Sonic fans are some of the most passionate fans in the world. And they’re very opinionated! When they like what you do, that is a huge compliment. It’s overwhelming sometimes.”

Idris Elba echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the film’s universal appeal:

“We all know hedgehogs don’t move fast. And they’re not blue. But no matter what age you are, this is an experience you don’t want to miss. And make sure you share it — it’s definitely a movie for everyone.”

Jim Carrey also encourages audiences to watch the film in theaters:

“And see it with your family. No matter how big your TV screen is, the cinema allows you to dream bigger. The artists that created this have painted it on a canvas so large you can get lost in it. But be sure to drop some popcorn so you can find your way back.”
