  • Disney+ Streaming Review — There’s Great Promise and Potential from ‘Ironheart’ but They Don’t Have Enough Episodes to Fully Realise It

Disney+ Streaming Review — There’s Great Promise and Potential from ‘Ironheart’ but They Don’t Have Enough Episodes to Fully Realise It

Debuting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in ‘Wakanda Forever,’ Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart, was portrayed as a genius on par with Tony Stark, but without any of his privilege. After the events of that film, her streaming series follows the aftermath of her involvement with major MCU characters. She trained and learned under Shuri in Wakanda and earned a scholarship to study at MIT. However, her determination to build an iron suit to protect the people she loves, drawn from a trauma involving her best friend and her father, mirrors the same determination Tony Stark had during ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ and we know how that turned out. Her recklessness and unorthodox, even illegal, methods of funding her research lead to her expulsion from MIT, forcing her to return to Chicago and start over.

The premise is incredible. The MCU has introduced so many people who had strong support system from the get-go. Tony Stark had generational wealth. Black Panther, both T’Challa and Shuri, had the kingdom of Wakanda and all its resources at their disposal. Doctor Strange had access to the vast libraries of Kamar-Taj. Even Steve Rogers had the backing of the U.S. government, while Sam Wilson had the support of Stark Industries at one point. It’s refreshing to see a character who is just as brilliant as these characters but has to hustle and even do less than savory things just to be able to do some good.

It’s a metaphor for how marginalized sectors of America are sometimes forced to go against their nature in order to rise through the ranks and do what they believe is right. It’s an irony, but also a symptom of the systems in place that forces the underprivileged, especially people of color, most notably Black communities, to struggle against seemingly unbeatable odds.

    Disney Ironheart 1
Riri Williams/Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) in Marvel Television’s IRONHEART, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Marvel. © 2025 MARVEL. All Rights Reserved.

This makes Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) an interesting character to watch. She’s tough and unapologetic. She’s isolated, even from the people who love her, because she’s so used to fighting and is afraid to deal with loss again. While her end goal is that of the righteous and of the good, she’s willing to break the rules to achieve it. This is all punctuated by the fact that she’s still a teenager. Filled with emotions, she hasn’t yet learned to see the bigger picture. At some point in the show, she refuses to be called a hero. She’s selfish and self-possessed, another byproduct of her age, her environment, her history, and her intellect. And that’s exactly what makes her so compelling to watch.

    Disney Ironheart 2
Riri Williams/Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) in Marvel Television’s IRONHEART, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Marvel. © 2025 MARVEL. All Rights Reserved.

And it’s because of this that the Disney+ series ‘Ironheart’ is so disappointing. A show like this – that talks about her past trauma, her struggles with securing funding and being taken seriously, and her constant battle against a system that keeps beating her down, deserves more than just six episodes. It needs more time to fully explore these themes and to fully develop her character.

    Disney Ironheart 6
Riri Williams/Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) in Marvel Television’s IRONHEART, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Marvel. © 2025 MARVEL. All Rights Reserved.

At just six episodes, the show rushes through so many narrative beats that it feels incomplete and underdeveloped. ‘Ms. Marvel’ and ‘Hawkeye,’ two other MCU Disney+ shows, managed to keep their narratives cohesive by focusing on personal themes and staying squarely on character development. ‘Ironheart,’ on the other hand, punches big. But without the episodes to fully explore the underground tech world that Riri has to scour through to rebuild her armor or fully realise the fragile dynamic between her and her mother and the other characters in the show who she feels very strongly about, or the mystical nature of the villain and his own take of disrupting the system. It feels unfair for ‘Ironheart’ to not be given the space the story they chose to tell needs to be able to fully flesh out the whole narrative.

    Disney Ironheart 5
Parker Robbins/The Hood (Anthony Ramos) in Marvel Television’s IRONHEART, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Marvel. © 2025 MARVEL. All Rights Reserved.

But there are a lot of good things in it. As Riri joins The Hood (Anthony Ramos) and his gang to afford rebuilding her suit, she engages in capers that target billionaires. There’s the element of the caper genre that plays nicely to this level of super heroics (though technically, she’s one of the bad guys). Her relationship with her mom (Anji White) could have potentially been a wonderful tender spot for the show if they really gave it more time to develop and grow as well as her relationship with her AI, NATALIE (Lyric Ross), who somehow managed to become the exact persona of her late best friend. And then there’s her engagement with a black-market hoarder of tech, Joe McGillicuddy (Alden Ehrenreich). Riri and Joe’s interactions are the most fully fleshed-out narrative in this show because they are an excellent counterpoint for each other but when Joe gets tangled up in all of Riri’s shenanigans and it affects him squarely, his own individual narrative arc feels rushed and underdeveloped, as well.

    Disney Ironheart 13
    IRONHEART

There’s a lot of action here, some really good story beats, and some excellent acting from Thorne, White, Ross, and Ehrenreich but the show really needed an extra four episodes or even six to fully embrace this world. Riri, for someone without any funds, seems to manage to quickly rebuild her suit time and time again when that was the central premise from the beginning. I liked ‘Ironheart’ for its promise and its potential, but I know that it could have been better.

But the show really needed an extra four, or even six, episodes to fully embrace this world. Riri, for someone without any resources, somehow manages to rebuild her suit over and over again, even though the lack of funding was the central premise from the beginning. I liked ‘Ironheart‘ for its promise and potential, but I also know it could have been so much better.

    My Rating:

    stars 3 0

Think it deserved more episodes too? Catch Ironheart on Disney+ and decide for yourself if Riri Williams is ready to take flight as the MCU’s next tech hero.

  • Make-A-Wish® Partners with GMG Productions’ “Come From Away” to Support Children with Critical Illnesses

Make-A-Wish® Partners with GMG Productions’ “Come From Away” to Support Children with Critical Illnesses

Nonprofit organization Make-A-Wish® Philippines has partnered with GMG Productions for a special fundraising performance that aims to grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Through a local production of the award-winning Broadway musical, “Come From Away,” the partnership aims to bring a lifetime of hope to children in need with this special night of entertainment.

    MAWPH Photo 1

Based on real events, “Come From Away” is set in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, where 38 planes carrying 7,000 passengers were grounded right after the September 11 attacks. Despite growing tension in the country, the local townsfolk offered their homes and hospitality to the stranded strangers, welcoming them as neighbors in their time of need.

In real life, one of the grounded planes was a Make-A-Wish flight, carrying children with critical illnesses and their families on the way to Disney World, Florida. Due to the postponement of the much-anticipated trip, the town came together to throw a party for the children, complete with mascots, music, cakes and clowns. This is just one of many stories from Gander that inspired the musical, showing how kindness can help change people’s lives.

Under the direction of Michael Williams, “Come From Away” has been adapted to a local audience, celebrating the power of community and generosity. And with its upcoming staging on June 27 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati, limited tickets will be available for the VIP section, with proceeds going towards bringing hope, strength and joy to the children who need it most.

“We are happy to partner with GMG Productions for this acclaimed musical, and to share the same values of kindness and generosity as the story that people will see on stage. Like the town of Gander, Newfoundland coming together to help strangers, we also believe in the power of community and wishes to help change the lives of our beneficiaries,” shared Ms. Aleah Ortiz, Executive Director of Make-A-Wish® Philippines.

    MAWPH Photo 2

In its 25th year of making wishes come true, Make-A-Wish® Philippines continues to be a beacon of hope to children with critical illnesses. On the road to achieving its goal of making 525 wishes come true this year, the foundation recently granted the wishes of Kiv (5, diagnosed with a Neuroectodermal Intraabdominal Tumor) and Betsy (13, living with neuroblastoma) to meet SB19. Make-A-Wish® Philippines has also partnered with COMCO Mundo League of Enterprises to amplify its message of hope for its 25th anniversary celebration, inviting donors, volunteers and partners to support this important milestone.Become a Wishmaker and secure your spot at the Make-A-Wish VIP section of “Come From Away” this June 27 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati. Tickets are available at wishes.ph, where you can learn more about how you can help transform lives, one wish at a time.

  • CCP upholds diversity and gender equality with a façade lighting this Pride Month

CCP upholds diversity and gender equality with a façade lighting this Pride Month

This June, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) lights up not just its iconic façade—but also the hearts of many—as it joins the global celebration of Pride Month with a breathtaking display of color, light, and meaning.

Pride Month Facade Lighting Photo by Orly Daquipil 1

Starting June 25, the CCP Main Building transforms into a luminous canvas awash in the vibrant hues of the rainbow flag—an enduring symbol of pride, unity, and love. But it’s more than just a splash of color. This year’s lighting spectacle features a striking interplay of rainbow illumination and GOBO projections, creating patterns inspired by human fingerprints—each one unique, just like every person in the LGBTQIA+ community.

The powerful concept, developed by the CCP Production Design and Technical Services Division, draws a bold parallel between individuality and identity. “No two fingerprints are the same—and neither are our stories,” the team shares, emphasizing the personal yet universal journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and visibility that many in the LGBTQIA+ community face.

    Pride Month Facade Lighting 5

More than just a dazzling light show, the installation stands as a visual manifesto of the CCP’s unwavering commitment to artistic freedom, inclusivity, and representation. Through the years, the CCP has been a strong advocate for gender equality and safe spaces, using art as a catalyst for conversation, compassion, and change.

“This fingerprint motif is a symbol of authenticity and strength,” says CCP Artistic Director Dennis N. Marasigan, who also chairs the CCP Gender and Development Committee. “It reminds us that in our diversity lies our power, and that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and respected.”

The installation is made possible through the dedicated efforts of CCP’s technical team, led by concept designer Jericho A. Pagana, and brought to life by the skilled Gobo Team: Shantie De Roca, Mary Grace Budol, Lucio Tapiru, John Mar Dumayas, and Alex Pineda.

Step into this radiant tribute to individuality and pride. The façade lighting runs from 6 PM to 10 PM, June 25 to 30—a weeklong celebration of resilience, equality, and the beautiful spectrum of humanity.

  • Steven Spielberg and David Koepp Unleash a New Dinosaur Era with “Jurassic World Rebirth” – In PH Cinemas July 2!

Steven Spielberg and David Koepp Unleash a New Dinosaur Era with “Jurassic World Rebirth” – In PH Cinemas July 2!

The master of cinematic spectacle, Steven Spielberg, and iconic screenwriter David Koepp are reuniting to reshape the future of dinosaurs in Jurassic World Rebirth, roaring exclusively into Philippine cinemas on July 2, 2025.

    JWR museum min

Three decades after Spielberg first captivated the world with Jurassic Park (1993), he returns as Executive Producer to steer the franchise into uncharted territory. Alongside him is Koepp, the original Jurassic Park screenwriter, crafting a story that’s both a thrilling reboot and a loving nod to the legacy.

“We wanted a film that felt like a fresh start while remaining in the world of the previous films,” says producer Frank Marshall, who has been the longtime producer of the franchise. “We continue to develop the idea that ‘life finds a way’ with a different kind of story that combines heist-movie adventure with creature-feature horror. We have new characters, a new setting, and new dinosaurs, some of which have gone very, very bad. At the same time, what I find exciting about Rebirth is that it finds a tone that harkens back to the original Jurassic Park. And that has a lot to do with the creative team we assembled for this one.”

    Watch The Official Trailer Here:

A Bold New Era: Dinosaurs, Danger & Life’s Greatest Mystery

Set five years after the explosive events of Jurassic World Dominion, the earth’s ecology has shifted, leaving dinosaurs to survive only in isolated equatorial zones mimicking prehistoric climates.

But hidden within the DNA of the planet’s three most colossal creatures—rulers of land, sea, and sky—is the key to something extraordinary: a life-saving drug that could revolutionize medicine and extend human life.

The concept was sparked by Koepp’s real-life curiosity about dinosaurs’ biological resilience. “While doing research, I found that certain dinosaurs, larger ones in particular, did have extraordinarily long lifespans and the reason was they had remarkably low incidences of heart disease,” says Koepp. “That led to the idea that a drug could be synthesized from their DNA, because the greatest killer of humans is heart disease. The nice thing about that premise was that it was true to the core theme, ‘life finds a way.’ Life extension! Everyone can get onboard with that! To me, that seemed a valid reason—combined with the promise of a massive payday for the covert operations team—for smart, competent people to take the risk of going on an adventure into the most dangerous place in the world.”

    Mosasaurus Spinosaurus JWR

Back to the Roots: Plausible Science, Real Humor & Dinosaur Mayhem

Spielberg and Koepp meticulously followed their unwritten rules for a true Jurassic film: stay grounded in science, maintain continuity, and never forget the humor.

“Humor is oxygen for movies like these,” Koepp says. “Not in a self-conscious way, but in an utterly believable, character-oriented way. To me there’s nothing funnier in films like these where you have characters trying to stay calm in the face of extreme peril by understating it.”

    Mosasaurus JWR

Jurassic World Rebirth Roars into Philippine Cinemas July 2!

We’ve all seen it in the trailers: AMELIA is a military weapon using the same technology as M3GAN, but as she becomes self-aware, she uses her abilities to return to the United States and wipe out the people who created her. We then catch up with the main characters, Gemma and Cady, two years after their ordeal in the first movie. While Gemma has become a staunch advocate for AI regulation and of active participation in parenting, Cady has grown into a prickly preteen (now 12 years old) who has taken up aikido and feels resentful toward Gemma for being, ironically, too busy to be more involved in her life.

Director and screenwriter Gerard Johnstone flexes his comedic flair by laying down farcical moments and allowing the scenes to fully bring out the comic and satirical tone of the film, all while building the tension of AMELIA closing in on Gemma. However, that danger feels more in line with the conventions of action and suspense than of horror. While ‘M3GAN 2.0’ remains gruesome and brutal, it is more hard-hitting than it is spooky.

Of course, M3GAN is still around, and she comes back with a vengeance. Now, she’s more self-aware, and this is presented through her snarkier attitude and less restrained behavior toward everyone except Cady. She knows what they did to her, and she is unafraid of ruffling feathers. This makes for some great comebacks and very campy moments.

The film doesn’t shy away from the things that made the first movie so enjoyable. What it does is add bigger set pieces, larger action sequences, and a plot that gets bigger, weirder, and more explosive. If you regularly read my reviews, you know I don’t always think that bigger is better, but in this case, it works. For camp to be truly campy, it needs ambition. And this bursts through the ceiling the first film built, going over and beyond what we expected it to be and that’s perfectly fine.

But surprisingly, through its satirical take on the AI rush, the movie explores several compelling insights about the ethical use of AI and the dangers it can bring. An early sequence set in Gemma’s house, which is equipped with smart AI technology, shows how it becomes a threat to everyone inside when one of the robots takes control of the entire infrastructure. Everything from cabinets and refrigerators to even the robot vacuum becomes dangerous.

Even Gemma’s shift into developing human enhancement hardware, which is meant to help disabled people walk again and make work easier and more efficient for blue-collar laborers, is shown to be dangerous if taken over by an outside source.

Sure, ‘M3GAN 2.0’ has a lot of fun with two deranged robots going at it, and we get a kick out of all the fight sequences and punchlines, but the film also underlines the real dangers of turning our world AI-dependent. There are no safeguards for what might happen if AI technology ever becomes self-aware, or if another human being takes that technology and uses it for their own purposes. The military is always the first suspect.

At the same time, the film manages to shed light on the importance of active parenting and not relying on gadgets to do the job of real people. We are too locked in to our phones and the internet. We have forgotten how to be human and how to interact with each other as humans. Some of the most interesting moments come from the evolving dynamic between Gemma and M3GAN.

I’m very happy that ‘M3GAN 2.0’ didn’t try to take itself seriously. By doing so, the filmmakers presented a film that is laugh-out-loud funny while still driving home the message about the dangers of unethical, unregulated AI development.
