  • Zack Tabdulo Launches New Era with ‘Akin Ka’

After being hailed as Spotify’s Top Streaming Domestic Artist for 2022, Zack Tabudlo breaks barriers again with “AKIN KA,” a new record exploring a different side of his craft. Here, he explores with reckless abandon—it’s unapologetic and passionate but remains a homage to the smooth soul musical genre.

Zack sees the single as a mirror of his fun side since he took inspiration from funk and RnB classics, including legends like James Brown and Motown.

His choice of lyrics is also bold, as the persona speaks to a potential lover in a raw language—almost as if gasping for air, as he drowns in passion. On the other hand, the musical elements blend colorful sounds, meshing well with the narrative.

“The certain elements within—like the horns section, keys, drums, ambient noise, and backup vocals—helped build the entire song. It’s also a new experience for me, as the song mimics the 70s era and how soul music was made and written during those times.”

Fans can expect more of Zack Tabudlo (and his new musical explorations) in the coming months. From new tracks to live gigs, the night is young and full of passion—so listen to “AKIN KA,” out now!

  • Alok and James Arthur Release Disco-Inspired Dance Single ‘Work With My Love’

Brazilian superstar and #4 DJ in the world Alok, known for colossal collaborations with John Legend, Jason Derulo, Tove Lo, and Ellie Goulding, has joined forces with multi platinum singer/songwriter James Arthur to release their new dance single, “Work With My Love.” The disco-inspired house track is guaranteed to get feet moving, hips swaying, and heads rocking, and is available now on all DSPs and streaming services HERE, with an official music video on the way.

Work with My Love cover art Alok James Arthur

“I’m a big fan of James’ style and had a great time making this track with him. Hope everyone enjoys it” – Alok

Music fans around the world may feel some nostalgia from the sample used in “Work With My Love;” recognizing it from having also been used in The Shapeshifters’ 2004 hit “Lola’s Theme,” which topped the UK singles charts and was nominated for “Best British Single” at the 2005 Brit Awards. The muffled disco horn sample crescendos into James’s silky, soulful voice, as he croons about an impossible love. Alok’s masterfully constructed disco and house sounds keep the track modern and fresh while the retro brass motif lays a consistent foundation in the background that ties all the sounds together. The high hats give it an uplifted, light quality and energized feel, while low synth notes keep the beat grounded and groovy. As James repeatedly asks “Can you work with my love,” he invites us to compromise and meet halfway on the dance floor of life.

“As soon as I heard the iconic sample…I was in and keen to be involved in the track. Alok and I have attempted to work together previously so I’m super happy we’ve managed to create this massive tune.” – James Arthur

“Work With My Love” is Brazilian superstar Alok’s first single of 2023 following a slew of releases to cap a highly successful 2022, which was highlighted by him being crowned No. 1 DJ in Latin America and #4 in the world by DJ Mag and the launch of his “The Future Is Ancestral” philanthropic event series. The remarkable inaugural event brought his climate change initiatives and partnership to the United Nations’ Global Compact and helped kickoff New York’s Climate Change Week with a series of panels and a historic, first-ever performance on the rooftop of the United Nations headquarters. Alok’s musical successes in 2022 were also unmatched, with “Deep Down” staying at #1 on Billboard’s Dance charts for weeks while his dance pop anthem “All By Myself” with Ellie Goulding and Sigala flooded radio waves around the world. With a remarkable 70 million social media followers, the music producer and philanthropist continues to build on his legendary catalog, which already includes global hit singles like “Hear Me Now” and his chart topping remix of MEDUZA’s “Piece of Your Heart,” for which he won “Best Remix” at the 2020 International Dance Music Awards.

Known for his soulful, indie-folk sound centered on ballads of love and loss, James Arthur rose to prominence after winning the ninth series of The X Factor. His debut single, a cover of Shontelle’s “Impossible,” was released after the final, and debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart. Since then, it has gone on to sell over 2.5 million copies worldwide, making it the most successful winner’s single in the show’s history. Arthur’s other chart-topping tracks include “Say You Won’t Let Go,” “Naked,” and “Rewrite The Stars” with Anne-Marie [from The Greatest Showman: Reimagined], which have over 5 billion combined streams across platforms.

You may find lyrics to “Work With My Love” HERE.

  • CCP’s Himig Himbing Showcases Local Lullabies through Music Videos

Taking care of children can be very challenging to parents or babysitters, especially when lulling them to sleep.  At times, the efforts become increasingly difficult when the kid cries or even throws a tantrum that makes one wonder when it would ever end.  Talking to them could be a challenge, but singing to them might probably be just the solution.

Crooning “Rock-A-Bye-Baby”, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” or any popular English nursery rhyme to pacify an infant is one thing, but how about singing a lullaby in a Tagalog, Visayan or Mindanaoan language?  It was a calming experience for audiences to hear such lullabies at the recent launch of Himig Himbing: Mga Heleng Atin (CCP Indigenous Lullabies) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

A project of the CCP Arts Education Department through its Audience Development Division, Himig Himbing featured eight music videos of lullabies from different regions of the country.  The project is aimed at reintroducing the Philippine indigenous lullabies to contemporary audiences and developing nurturers that are grounded in Philippine songs and heles.

In realizing Himig Himbing, eight music videos of eight lullabies from the regions were developed based on the research of ethnomusicologist Sol Trinidad and arranged by musical director Krina Cayabyab.  Eight filmmakers, namely Sigrid Bernardo, Alvin Yapan, Carla Ocampo, Teng Mangansakan, Milo Tolentino, Mes De Guzman, Thop Nazareno, and Law Fajardo created their respective film interpretations of the featured lullabies.

The following videos are “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan” (a Tagalog lullaby composed by National Artist for Music Lucio San Pedro with lyrics by National Artist for Music and Literature Levi Celerio), “Katurog na, Nonoy” (a Bicolano lullaby sung by one whom a little boy looks for to put him to sleep), “Wiyawi” (a traditional Kalinga lullaby often sung by caretakers, usually Cordilleran fathers), “Aba-aba” (a lullaby indigenous to Southern Mindanao, particularly sung by the indigenous group Subanon), “Hele” (a lullaby from a 1986 field recording of Dr. Elena Mirano taken in San Mateo, Rizal), “Dungdungwen Kanto” (translated as I Will Love You, the first line of an Ilocano wedding song also often sung as a children’s lullaby), “Tingkatulog” (translated as ‘Sleeping Time’, a folk lullaby from the area of Bohol), and “Ili, Ili, Tulog Anay” (translated as ‘Little One, Go to Sleep’, a Visayan lullaby sung by a caretaker to a child and mentions a mother who is out buying bread).

CCP Board Trustee and Vice Chair Michelle Nikki Junia, who initiated the idea in the form of a lullaby, explains how both adults and children can benefit from this unique endeavor.

“We want to make sure that we have good research,” Junia elucidates.  “I requested to take a look at unpopular lullabies, not just the ‘Bahay Kubo’ (Nipa Hut) version, and dig deeper for a representation from various regions as we believe the country is very rich in traditions.  We have to embrace and make that known.”  She is also impressed with the production of the eight videos, which were integrated in the folk tales, putting an added value to the lullabies as well.  “That’s the beauty of it,” she says of the flicks.  “They were very creatively done and in high quality.”

Being an early childhood music educator, Junia observes that there is scarcity in terms of Filipino lullabies in her classes.  “Most of the lullabies Filipino music teachers would use as available resources are western repertoire, she notices.  “There are more western lullabies while traditional Filipino lullabies are very few.  I see that the importance for the mothers, the elders, the caregivers is to be aware and to share our traditional lullabies, especially that we are giving value to developing in the young our own language.  We are Filipinos, but sadly, the younger generation now are more eloquent in speaking English than in our own language.”

Regarding Filipino traditions, Junia does not want them to die.  “They have to be present up to this time and they need to be reborn.  That’s why the way Himig Himbing was arranged, and the way the music videos were produced somehow integrated the technology for it to be relevant to the young parents at this time,” she continues.  “Probably due to disconnection or lack of interest, they cannot relate to the way it sounds because it has a different ‘taste’.”

Junia also feels that something must be done in order to find a middle ground to reach out to the young parents, and ensure that Filipino traditional lullabies will stay, progress, and be made aware to the public.  “The importance of these oral traditions through lullabies is that the exposure of the infants at a very young age already gives them an idea of their identity,” she adds.  “We know that most of the time, when we have social events with other nationalities, there is some level of envy, because they really know who they are.  But the Filipinos, because many foreign countries have colonized us, there is a confusion of who we really are.  We have to accept this problem.”

Another purpose of CCP for pursuing Himig Himbing is to promote musical awareness, especially for the young ones in terms of its effect on brain development.  “There have been a lot of studies that show that music has positive effects on brain stimulation, even before they are born.  That’s why I encourage the moms to already listen and sing to lullabies during pregnancy,” Junia avers.  “It’s because the vibration of the voice resonates down to the unborn child through the umbilical cord.  That’s why it is amazing that when the baby comes out into the real world, and when you play the lullabies you have been listening or singing to when you were pregnant, the babies would respond to it.  It’s because they already sense familiarity with what they heard.  And this is very important in stimulation, because the way young children would learn successfully in the different stages of their development.  All areas of the brain need to be stimulated.  Music is actually more attractive to children because it has melody, it has beat, it has rhythm, as compared to just merely talking or speaking, this is how the young ones get attracted to it.  This is a step for speech development,” she quips.

Junia feels that it is very important that CCP is aware of the situation, of how music and the arts can help in academic learning or preparedness later on.  “Since the ear is the closest sensory organ to the brain responsible for distributing information to the important regions of the brain, it therefore needs to be stimulated.  It makes sense, the first sensory organ developed in an unborn baby are the ears, so it’s really auditory,” she muses.

“As the ear is the first one to be developed and the last one to shut down, one would know how important it is, bridging the information, the knowledge grasped from the outside, from the environment being absorbed by the brain through music,” she enthuses.  “The lullaby is a soothing form of music suitable for infants, for very young children.  There is a bit of trauma when the unborn baby comes out of the womb.  And that trauma can be helped by music because of its soothing effect.  The music itself gives comfort to the inner, biological or physiological needs of the baby.”

Junia clarifies that the soothing outcome reduces anxiety as well.  “It helps in reconnecting, due to the trauma upon birth and the baby reconnects.  The baby needs security, comfort, and knows the ways of the mother.”

She sees the better way to communicate with babies is through singing lullabies, reading a book, and the like.  “We have to promote our own lullabies and make sure they remain as they are,” she emphasizes.  “It flows through our bloodstream so we have to make sure that they know their roots.  That’s the importance of it.  You’re using music because it’s what is interesting, and stimulating the young ones.  These are tools to help.”

Audiences who get to watch the videos will surely have a memorable takeaway.  “I think the young parents would be very excited to have a fresh and new set of repertoire to sing to their babies,” Junia advises.  “There are not many activities that you can do for infants.  It’s really a repertoire of songs that can truly help them in this stage to nurture their young ones.  They will be proud that they know something indigenous.”

The videos of Himig Himbing: Mga Heleng Atin can be viewed on the CCP Facebook page.

  • CCP ‘Banda Rito, Banda Roon’ Marches to Vibrant Pasko Spirit

Seven amazing brass bands, with a twirling baton group, march their way to the Cultural Center of the Philippines and celebrate the holiday season on December 17, 3pm, at the CCP Complex, followed by exhibition drills at the CCP Front Lawn at 4pm. The event is open to the public.

Dubbed Banda Rito, Banda Roon, the marching band show aims to highlight the rich brass band history and heritage in the Philippines while ushering in the lively and vibrant Paskong Pinoy spirit.

    CCP BandaRitoBandaRoon 2022 1

The brass bands joining the celebration are: Color Guard of the Philippines, Philippine Coast Guard Brass Band, Anak Zapote Band, Banda 96, Banda El Gobernador, and San Lorenzo Ruiz Band.  Joining them is the Baton Twirling Group.

Founded in 2015 by executive director Patricia Real Barairo, the Color Guard Alliance of the Philippines Inc. manages to conduct various color guard programs, including workshops and seminars for visual design, color guard techniques, and leadership development. Based in Bacoor, Cavite, the band aims to provide a safe venue for the youth to become contributing members of the society through performing arts. With its pilot squad members, CGAP was the first Philippine team which participated in the Winter Guard International – Asia Championships, and is affiliated with Asian Marching Band Confederation, Winter Guard International, Color Guard Netherlands, and World Marching Band Organization.

When Capt. Reynaldo D. Generillo, PCG GSC, superintendent of the Coast Guard Training Center, organized the band in 2000, the Philippine Coast Guard Symphonic Band (formerly known as the PCG Band) was originally composed of 24 members who took the first Coast Guardsman’s Course “A” Class 01-2000.

Keeping the command’s vision, mission and core functions through musical entertainment, the band has grown and represented the PCG in different parts of the country. Today, the PCGSB has 83 members, composed of senior and junior-ranking non-commissioned officers, under the tutelage of its musical director Capt. Herminigildo G. Ranera, who is also the resident conductor of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, through the supervision and guidance of CG Commodore Eustacio Nimrod P. Enriquez Jr., the commander of the Coast Guard Education, Training and Doctrine Command.

Established in 1925, Anak Zapote Band is probably one of the oldest marching bands in Cavite, or even in the country. Back then, the sons and grandchild of the revolutionaries who fought and sacrificed their lives during the Spanish occupation built a tolda de campana, near the Rubio’s family house, where they practiced and honed their musical skills. Composed of 80 members, mostly young musicians, under the baton of Maestro Angelo Enriquez, the band follows the “Tone, quality, interpretation proficiency, our goals.” Some of the members are part of the Philippine Army, Philippine Navy, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Coast Guard and City of Manila Band.

Founded in 1986 after the Edsa Revolution, Banda El Gobernador was named after Gov. P.F Espiritu who hailed from Panapaan, where the band is based. The band was initially taught by Col. Delfin Miranda, who was a music student at the UST Conservatory of Music that time, with the help of Teodoro Reyes and through the financial support of Mr. and Mrs. Peping Miranda, Mrs. Aragon, Mrs. Santos and the people of Panapaan. A year after it was established, Banda El Gobernador won the Best Marching Band during the town fiesta in Taal, Batangas, and first runner-up at the Quiapo District Fiesta. Since then, the band has won several parades and concert competitions including a back-to-back win at the Antipolo Band Parade in 2014 and 2016, and a Hall of Famer in Maytinis, Kawit in 2013 to 2016.

Composed of 90 talented individuals from Bacoor and nearby barangays, the band under the baton of Maestro Jessee San Miguel and Maestro Joey Abesamis continues its legacy in providing quality music.

Founded under the San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish in 1986, the San Lorenzo Drum and Lyre Band was initially established to provide musical accompaniment to various barangay and parish events, including the Feast of Saints and processions. Years later, the San Lorenzo Drum and Lyre Band evolved and became the San Lorenzo Brass Band in 2003. The members underwent training and lessons in different musical instruments and reading notes. Soon, the band started joining and winning competitions nationwide.

Founded and established in Taytay, Rizal, the Philippine Baton Twirling Association is a member country and a board member of the World Baton Twirling Federation. The association aims to provide opportunities for the Filipino kids to improve their skills by providing coaching and mentoring programs. All proceeds from PBTA Inc. are utilized to develop the baton twirling in the Philippines.

Established in 1930, Banda 96 was named after the historical revolutions in 1896 and composed of young Filipino boys. In 1956, the group joined and won the grand prize in a band competition held at the Subic US Naval Base. They were appointed the original members of the US Naval Base Consolidated Fire Department Band. They have joined several competitions in different regions in the country, including the one at the General Trias where they won first place in the March or Parade category, Pistang Quiapo (Hall of Famer Award), Pista ng Tondo (Hall of Famer Award), Nayong Pilipino’s Bandang Extravaganza (Hall of Famer), Araw ng Maynila (Best Drum Major Best Uniform 3rd place), Pista ng Antipolo (Grand Champion for 12 consecutive years from 2000 to 2012), and 1st Bakood Festival in 2011 (Grand Champion).
