Bob Odenkirk Is Returns as Hutch in “Nobody 2” — The Explosive, Unexpected Family Vacation Movie of the Year

Family vacations just got a serious upgrade.

Bob Odenkirk is back as Hutch Mansell in Nobody 2, the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2021 sleeper hit. In this next chapter, Hutch is trying—emphasis on trying—to balance his role as a family man with his not-so-average day job: professional assassin.

    Nobody2 Odenkirk gun min

This time, he’s packing heat and sunscreen as he takes his wife and kids on a supposedly chill getaway to Wild Bill’s Majestic Midway and Waterpark. But when small-town bullies cross the wrong guy, things spiral into chaos involving a corrupt sheriff, a shady theme park owner, and a crime boss who’s anything but subtle.

    Vacation Mode: Off

The filmmakers knew they needed to turn up the heat—and the stakes—for the sequel.

“Three years have passed since the events of the first film, and we see how Hutch and his family have evolved,” producer Kelly McCormick says. “They went through a lot in the first film and with Nobody 2 they go through even more.”

That “more” includes high-octane action scenes, hilarious mishaps, and a family bonding experience like no other—complete with explosions.

    Work-Life Balance… With a Body Count

Producer Marc Provissiero puts it best:

“The challenge in a sequel is, once the genie is out of the bottle, how do you tell a compelling story and create suspense,” producer Marc Provissiero says. “We know that Hutch has a particular set of skills. We decided to show the challenge and create themes around work-life balance. Even with the job that Hutch does, he’s still got to come home to a family. That evolves the story into universal relevance.”le.”

And relatable it is. Who hasn’t struggled with maintaining boundaries between work and home? Hutch just does it with blood, bruises, and bullets.

    Watch the Trailer now:

More Action, More Laughs, More Heart

Actor and producer Bob Odenkirk promises Nobody 2 goes harder—and deeper.

“Nobody 2 is a bigger film, and it’s been a bigger job,” star and producer Odenkirk says. “I had extra responsibility trying to make the story work, and there’s just a lot more to it. There’s more fighting, character, story; there’s more everything.” The result, Odenkirk says, is a film that is “powerful, funny, surprising, out of control, bloody—and sweet.”

The end result? “It’s powerful, funny, surprising, out of control, bloody—and sweet.”

So gear up for a rollercoaster vacation gone haywire. Hutch Mansell is back, and this time, he’s got his entire family in tow.

  • Dakota Johnson Stars as a Modern Matchmaker with a Messy Love Life in “Materialists” — In Cinemas August 6

Dakota Johnson Stars as a Modern Matchmaker with a Messy Love Life in “Materialists” — In Cinemas August 6

Love Math, Messy Heart: Meet Lucy

What happens when the person helping everyone find love can’t make sense of her own feelings? That’s the irresistible premise of Materialists, the latest film from Past Lives director Celine Song — starring Dakota Johnson as Lucy, a matchmaker who’s great at pairing people up… but terrible at navigating her own romantic life.

    Materialists Dakota City

Rooted in Song’s real-life stint as a matchmaker in New York City, the story brings both sharp insight and playful humor to today’s dating culture. “She’s (Lucy) somebody who’s very clear about the fact that love really does baffle her, but she’s very good at the math of dating,” Song describes.

    Dakota Johnson IS Lucy

The moment Song met Dakota Johnson, she knew she’d found her Lucy. “We were having a meeting and the way that she is so vulnerable and so funny and sharp, I remember walking away from her thinking, she’s Lucy,” Song recalls.

In the film, Lucy’s career is soaring—but her own love life is a question mark. After a twist of fate reconnects her with her ex and introduces a new potential match, Lucy finds herself stuck between what looks perfect on paper and what feels heartbreakingly familiar.

    A Chameleon in Love

Dakota Johnson loved how layered Lucy is. “She’s extremely nonjudgmental,” Johnson explains. “She just wants to deliver and she wants people to find love, but she’s pretty shut off from that search herself.”

    Materialists Dakota Chris

Lucy’s many shades—playful, serious, guarded, and sincere—are what drew Johnson in. “I was drawn to the role because it’s so complex,” Johnson says. “Lucy has so many different dynamics in the film, so there’s many different Lucys. She’s a bit of a different person with every other character — she’s sort of a chameleon in that way. And then you’re wondering which of her is the truth, which I thought was just so fun to play with.”

    Fragile, Flawed, and Fearless

Celine Song believes Lucy’s contradictions are exactly what make her compelling. “Lucy is so beautiful, but she’s very vulnerable when it comes to these things that come from her own intimate self-perception and self-objectification, which I think Dakota actually does understand from being in public forever,” Song notes.nce.

    First Look at the Film

Catch a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Lucy’s world with the First Look featurette here:

Opening August 6 in PH Cinemas

Equal parts clever and romantic, Materialists is a witty exploration of modern love, self-worth, and second chances. Whether you’re a hopeless romantic or just romantically hopeless, Lucy’s journey will hit home.

Materialists is distributed by Columbia Pictures Philippines and opens in cinemas on August 6.

  • Unmask the Mystery: Meet the Characters of “Weapons,” the New Horror from Barbarian Director Zach Cregger

Unmask the Mystery: Meet the Characters of “Weapons,” the New Horror from Barbarian Director Zach Cregger

Welcome to Maybrook: A Town With a Vanishing Secret

Something’s wrong in Maybrook. On one fateful night, seventeen children from the same elementary class vanish—except one. In Weapons, writer-director Zach Cregger spins a sinister tale of loss, fear, and fractured truth. This cinematic mystery opens in cinemas and IMAX on August 6 and promises to twist expectations at every turn.

    WPN 08517c

Fresh off the success of 2022’s cult favorite Barbarian, Cregger returns with a genre-defying thriller critics are calling “a horror masterpiece” and “an instant classic.”

    A Perspective-Driven Nightmare

Cregger’s storytelling ambition shines through in his decision to film Weapons through hyper-subjective perspectives. Every chapter is told from a different character’s point of view, down to camera height and focus. This technique is especially haunting in scenes seen through the eyes of Alex, the lone student who didn’t disappear.

“This is a movie that starts weird and I think it ends way weirder, but it also stays both feet on the ground as much as it can,” says Cregger. “It’s a movie that obeys the rules of its own universe so it’s not going to spiral into some bizarre, hallucinogenic nightmare or anything like that. But it is a twisty, turn-y movie. I mean, it’s a movie that reinvents itself about every 20 minutes while still staying true to the central engine. But it’s also a fun movie. It’s funny, it’s scary, it’s inviting. It’s not a big, grim, morose slog, and yet, the story it tells is really f***ed up.”

The Characters You’ll Meet in Weapons

    Archer (Josh Brolin)

Archer is a father grappling with the disappearance of his son. Unwilling to wait for answers, he launches his own investigation.

Says Brolin of the good year the horror genre is having, and of working with Cregger: “This is the horror cycle, and I like it. I love being involved with somebody who I think is really good.”

    WPN 08911r

    Justine Gandy (Julia Garner)

Justine is an elementary school teacher who discovers her class empty—except for one student. As rumors swirl and accusations mount, she takes matters into her own hands. Garner sees the film as more than horror: “And what I mean by love story,” she says, “is that it’s about people having the desire to connect but not knowing how.”

    WPN T1 0024r

    Paul (Alden Ehrenreich)

Paul is a police officer with personal demons, reluctantly swept into the investigation. Ehrenreich was drawn to the project by Cregger’s storytelling. “It’s such a full meal,” says Ehrenreich of the stories of “Weapons.” “You get so many different characters, different dynamics and different stories. And the structure of the story is just so wonderfully done. So, I’ve been very genuinely excited to be a part of it.”

    Alex (Cary Christopher)

Alex is the only student who didn’t vanish. His scenes are uniquely shot from his third-grade perspective. Young actor Cary Christopher found filming more fun than scary. “It’s different, because if you’re just watching a movie, it can be really scary because you don’t know what’s going on. But when you’re filming that same movie and you see it, it’s not scary to you. In fact, it’s funny. But since I know that it’s fake and it’s not real, we’re just all actors, it just gets pretty funny.”ares.

    Marcus (Benedict Wong)

Marcus is the principal of Maybrook Elementary, stuck between supporting Justine and addressing community fears. Benedict Wong was immediately intrigued by the script’s originality. “It was original, unpredictable, and I could immediately tell it had the potential to be genuinely terrifying,” he says.

    WPN T1 0016

A Story That Demands to Be Seen on the Big Screen

With a compelling ensemble cast that includes Amy Madigan and Austin Abrams, Weapons is more than a horror film—it’s a narrative puzzle that reshapes itself with each chapter. It’s bold, unsettling, and unexpectedly humorous.

Weapons is distributed by Warner Bros. Philippines, opens exclusively in cinemas and IMAX on August 6. Follow the mystery. Share your theories using the hashtag #WeaponsMovie and visit MaybrookMissing.com for more chilling updates.

Known for The Little Mermaid and Doctor Who, Jonah Hauer-King plays the grounded and guilt-ridden Milo. “There’s all the fear factor, mystery, blood, and slasher stuff, which is brilliant,” he says. “We introduce some great new characters to root for, and Jenn and the other writers have brought a contemporary, fresh humor to it. There’s a wink, which is fun because the horror and comedy are intertwined and play off each other nicely,” he says.

Chase Sui Wonders as Ava Brucks
Perceptive and passionate, Ava — played by Bodies Bodies Bodies star Chase Sui Wonders — resists the initial silence after the group’s fatal accident. “What happens at Reaper’s Curve tests Ava, and the group, in ways that you can’t really come back from,” explains Wonders. “It’s a new reality that everyone has to contend with.”

    Danica Cline as Danica Richards
The fiercely loyal best friend to Ava, Danica tries to protect her bond even as their world unravels. “Danica and Ava are two peas in a pod,” Cline points out. “They’ve been best friends forever, and it’s one of those friendships that will remain strong – no matter what they go through.”

    Tyriq Withers as Teddy Spencer
With a smile that hides deep trauma, Teddy is the town’s golden boy with a complicated past. “Teddy has a vulnerable side because despite his parents’ resources, there was a lack of real support, and Teddy experienced some real trauma,” says Tyriq Withers. “Still, he is always the light of the group. I’d say he’s even the glue, the comedic factor that tries to alleviate painful situations. Teddy just wants to be around good energy all the time, because he missed out on that in the family home.”

    Sarah Pidgeon as Stevie
Stevie is the realist, grounded and haunted. Now working at a bar run by Southport survivor Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.), she represents the emotional weight of past tragedies. “I’ve certainly been there as Stevie,” says Sarah Pidgeon. “You find a corner to hide in, but I think Stevie is the realist of the group. She’s a foil to Danica, who has been able to skirt around a lot of consequences in her life. Stevie has not been able to do that. Every time her life has gone off the rails, she’s suffered for it.”

Movie Review: What It Feels Like for a Girl – A Review of ‘Sunshine’

From my understanding, ‘Sunshine’ is the second of a trilogy of films about women by writer and director Antoinette Jadaone. It began with ‘Fan Girl’ and it continues now with ‘Sunshine,’ the story of a gymnast who is preparing to compete to qualify for the Olympics when she discovers she’s pregnant.

Jadaone has mastered what I’d like to call “the journey movie.” From ‘That Thing Called Tadhana’ to ‘Fan Girl,’ her characters take on a physical journey – in ‘That Thing Called Tadhana’ the main characters travel from the airport to Sagada while ‘Fan Girl’ follows the lead characters from a mall show to an abandoned mansion in the middle of nowhere – while also embarking on an emotional one. The movement through space runs parallel to the character’s own inner journey and struggle. In ‘Sunshine,’ the lead character played by Maris Racal has her own journey: through the streets of Quiapo and Manila, in search of abortificents that may help her with her situation. The distance is not as far as other Jadaone films, but the interior one is immense as the film tries to see the vast landscape of women’s issues surrounding pregnancy and abortion.

    Sunshine 4

Sunshine, the main character, embodies a lot of the fears and anxieties that women have when it comes to their bodies. What the film manages to do is to show how much the burden of an unwanted pregnancy falls unto the woman. In the story, her boyfriend (played by Elijah Canlas) gives her money to have it aborted. He’s angry and dismissive and chooses not to deal with it at all. Sunshine lives with her sister (played by Jennica Garcia), caring for an infant, whose father is nowhere at all in the film. Their brother skirts away from doing chores and is barely a figure in their lives, doing his own thing.

    Sunshine 3

All the while, Sunshine is visited by a little girl (Annika Co) who seems to know everything about her. The girl is abrasive, tough, and magical, in a way. She’s a lot like Sunshine. She’s a fighter and already, we know she’s more than just another character.

    Sunshine 2

Throughout the film, we see Sunshine see the best and the worst of people. Her journey brings her to a public hospital where she meets two kinds of doctors – those with compassion and those whose principles and faith can turn away a young woman in need. Sunshine meets a young girl who also looking for help because of the frightening situation she has with the father of her unborn child.

‘Sunshine’ is a film about women and through Sunshine, we see all her hopes and dreams slipping away from her hands because of one reckless decision and a man who chose to not use a condom. What the film does is humanize this important discussion and show us the hard truths of the world that we live in and the current policies at play about abortion in the country.

    Sunshine Movie Review

Maris Racal is a force of nature. Her portrayal of Sunshine is a textured work that balances between Sunshine’s need to be tough but, deep inside, she’s vulnerable and breaking. She has an incredible screen presence that holds on to you and it makes Sunshine’s struggle very real and believable. It’s a daring performance that lays it all out there without playing for sympathy. The other standout performance belongs to Jennika Garcia. As the sister of Sunshine, she’s in charge of both her siblings and her own baby. There’s a story there that the film’s narrative never explores but Garcia carries that history in her movements and in the way her character just looks at a moment. She is warm when she needs to be and then finds strength and fire when her character surges like a lioness protecting her cub when she’s out to protect her sister. It’s a powerful performance despite its limited screentime.

    Sunshine Main

What I love most about this movie is its ending. Jadaone makes a stand and in the most poignant way possible, using the whole narrative to push the characters into an ending that makes sense and without judgment.

The cinematography of Paolo Orendain is luscious, finding beauty in the dark, seedy streets of Manila at night. Rico Blanco’s music properly sets the mood while Benjamin Tolentino’s editing keeps it fast paced yet clear. Obviously, Antoinette Jadaone keeps a tight ship and of all of her works, of which there are many great ones, ‘Sunshine’ might be the best of them yet.
