The late French New Wave director, Jean-Luc Godard, once said that “with mobile phones and whatever, everyone is now an auteur.”
In QCinema’s specially-curated section, Screen International, however, the bar is certainly set higher as it showcases the world’s renowned directors whose distinctive styles make their acclaimed works undeniably their own.
David Cronenberg, Canada’s body horror master, is back in form with his sci-fi horror, Crimes Of The Future, with Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux and Kirsten Stewart. The film premiered in Cannes’ main competition.
Cronenberg’s latest film was from a script he had written twenty years ago. It follows a world-renowned performance artist couple, who performs surgery to audiences, in a future world where human evolution has accelerated for some individuals.
Also from Cannes competition, Jerzy Skolimowski’s EO, which was awarded the Jury Prize.
With more than 20 films since his debut in the early sixties, this Polish auteur has been the recipient of top prizes in Cannes and Venice.
EO is inspired from a Robert Bresson classic film, Au Hassard Balthazar, and it follows the life of a donkey born in a Polish circus. The circus animal encounters good and bad people along its journey through Europe, experiencing both joy and pain. Isabelle Huppert, who recently visited the country, joins the cast of Polish actors.
Arthouse favorite Hang Sang-soo graces QCinema’s screens for the first time with his latest ouevre, Walk Up.
A recipient of the top awards in Berlin, Locarno and Venice, he works another variation of his casual encounters and chatter that grace his works with melancholic gentleness. The film reflects on familiar spaces and characters that the prolific Korean master has been known for.
One of Costa Rica’s renowned filmmakers, Valentina Maurel, scored multiple wins in Locarno, winning Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Director awards for I Have Electric Dreams.
Its young adult protagonist lives with her mother while struggling to reconnect with her estranged father. This, as she tries to balance the tenderness and sensitivity of teenage life.
Denmark-based Iranian film director and screenwriter Ali Abbasi’sthird feature film Holy Spider will also be screened at QCinema.
Holy Spideris an internationally co-produced Persian-language crime thriller that depicts a fictional female journalist investigating a serial killer. It is based on the true story of Saeed Hanaei, a serial killer who targeted sex workers and killed 16 women from 2000 to 2001 in Mashhad, Iran.
The film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. It won for Zar Amir Ebrahimi the festival’s Best Actress Award. It was also selected as the Danish entry for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards.
The 2022 drama film of Austrian filmmaker Marie Kreutzer, whose films were screened at Berlin, Cannes, Toronto, and New York, Corsage is also at Screen International.
Corsage had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2022, in the Un Certain Regard section. It is a fictional account of one year in the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. On Christmas Eve 1877, Elisabeth, once idolized for her beauty, turns 40 and is officially deemed an old woman; she starts trying to maintain her public image.
Close, French-language Belgian drama film, is directed by Belgian film director and screenwriter Lukas Dhont.
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, to critical acclaim and the Grand Prix. It is Belgium’s submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards.
Close is about the friendship between two thirteen-year old boys Leo and Remi, which suddenly gets disrupted. Struggling to understand what has happened, Léo approaches Sophie, Rémi’s mother.
QCinema’s other sections showcase other established directors in their latest works that exemplify their stature as master storytellers.
At the Special Screenings section is Love Life, Koji Fukada’s newest film since his last, A Girl Missing, which screened in QCinema’s 2019 edition. Fukada previously won the Cannes Un Certain Regard Jury Prize for Harmonium, a 2016 critical hit.
The compelling Japanese drama tells about a couple whose routine is disrupted by a sudden family tragedy which reunites the wife with her mute ex-husband.
Also from the same section is a surprisingly candid coming-of-age story that deserves greater exposure.
Janchivdorj Sengedorj, one of Mongolia’s most prominent directors with a particular affinity for depictions of contemporary youth, won the Best Feature award at the New York Asian Film Festival for The Sales Girl.
Its an amusing portrayal of an introverted student’s new job in a sex-shop and her growing bond with the owner, a former exotic dancer.
Philippine cinema’s renowned auteur, Lav Diaz, is back in the festival for the third time, with his Venice out-of-competition entry, When The Waves Are Gone.
Shot in 16mm, Diaz’s characteristic black-and-white new opus untypically clocks in at a modest 3 hours 7 minutes – a far short from his usual long-form meditative narratives.
Frequent collaborator, John Lloyd Cruz, heads the cast of this revenge tragedy that focuses on two corrupt cops with a grudge, loosely based on Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo.
This year’s Silver Lion winner in Venice is at the New Horizons section.
Saint Omer is the first narrative feature of Alice Diop after working as an acclaimed documentary filmmaker.
It centers on a pregnant novelist in France who attends the trial of a Senegalese woman accused of murdering her baby. In the course of the court proceedings, she tries to blend the accused woman’s fate into the novel she is writing, a modern adaptation of the ancient myth of Medea, but things don’t go as expected.
Argentina, 1985, by Santiago Mitre, is one of the acclaimed titles in the new festival section, Advanced Screenings.
Based on real events, the story follows a team of lawyers on the heads of Argentina’s bloody military dictatorship during the 1980s, in a battle against odds and a race against time. Winner of the Venice FIPRESCI Award and San Sebastian People’s Choice Award, this gripping historical drama is presented by Prime Video Philippines.
The venues for the 10-day festival include Gateway Cineplex, Trinoma Cinemas, the new Cinema76 (in Tomas Morato), Rockwell Power Plant Cinema, and SM North EDSA.
Details about in10City, QCinema’s 10th anniversary presentation will be available at qcinema.ph and updates are posted at its social media accounts – Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Stars and filmmakers came together in Hollywood tonight to celebrate the world premiere of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed adventure “Strange World”—opening exclusively in theaters November 23. Attendees included Academy Award®- and Tony Award®-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who lends his voice to Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; comedian, actor, writer, filmmaker and musician Jaboukie Young-White, who’s the voice of Searcher’s 16-year-old, adventure-seeking son, Ethan; and actress, producer, bestselling author and TIME100 cover honoree Gabrielle Union, who provides the voice of Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things. Joining the voice cast were filmmakers Don Hall (director), Qui Nguyen (co-director/screenplay by), Roy Conli (producer) and composer Henry Jackman (music by). Event images are now available.
“Strange World” introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures. The voice cast also includes Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia’s fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange world.
From 87North’s Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, producers of bare-knuckle hit films such as Bullet Train, Nobody, John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw comes “Violent Night”, a holiday action-comedy that says you should always bet on red.
Starring David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Santa Claus and as a surprise combatant who’s about to prove why Nick is no saint when a team of mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve and takes everyone inside hostage. “Violent Night’s” Santa Claus is the real Santa, but in a way that we’ve never seen him before. This Santa is a protector and a warrior with some seriously bad-ass skills, but in the film, he’s become slightly bitter and tired about the otherwise merry holiday.
Jonathan “Jojo” Eusebio, a Filipino stunt director who has worked with 87North on various projects, including on the John Wick franchise delivers the action as the second unit director in Violent Night. “Jojo was one of the original members of our choreography team, so we’ve been working together a good 20 years,” producer Leitch says. “The talent that’s gravitated to 87North is beyond the physical. There’s a common work ethic and desire to make movies, and Jojo has always had that same drive in him. I have so much respect for him and love the work he’s been doing, both with 87North and without.”
The success formula for 87North includes having stunt teams that are better than anyone else in the world at their craft. “Jojo had the desire to be challenged and he was inspired by the Christmas backdrop,” producer McCormick says. “He brought a team together that had amazing athleticism and skill, and I think they all learned a lot about blending the wit and comedy with the action in the film along the way.”
David Harbour trained intensely and extensively for the role, which allowed for more specialty shots, long takes and big movements that wouldn’t have been able to be done safely without that hardcore training.
Harbour’s work added depth to Santa’s backstory and allowed the audience to find a deeper connection and empathy with the character. “When we meet him in the film, Santa is a curmudgeon who doesn’t like Christmas anymore, but underneath that, he’s a broken man,” Leitch says. “It gives the character humanity and makes him relatable, and that came from suggestions from David.”
For his part, Harbour wasn’t initially sure about the role when the idea of the film was first explained to him. “I first heard the pitch from my agent, who told me, ‘It’s a violent Santa Claus movie,’” Harbour says. “My initial response was, ‘What are you talking about?’ But then, they told me the filmmakers wanted to talk to me about it. So, they called me up and told me the general idea, and it sounded so hilarious, fresh and different.”
A Universal Pictures International feature, “Violent Night” will open in PH cinemas on November 30. Rated R-16 by the local censors board.
Enter a shocking and grisly culinary experience like no other with Searchlight Pictures’ The Menu, now showing in Philippine cinemas.
In “The Menu,” Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) travel to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. Watch the trailer below.
Directed by Mark Mylod (Game of Thrones), “The Menu” is a dark comedy horror film set in an exclusive restaurant headed by a reclusive world-renowned chef.
Joining Margot and Tyler on the occasion are three drunk tech bros, Bryce (Rob Yang), Soren (Arturo Castro) and Dave (Mark St. Cyr), repeat clients Anne and Richard (Judith Light and Reed Birney), renowned restaurant critic Lillian Bloom (Janet McTeer) and her magazine editor Ted (Paul Adelstein), and a famous movie star (John Leguizamo) with his assistant Felicity (Aimee Carrero). Hosted by general Elsa (Hong Chau) who leads an immaculately dressed front-of-house staff, the evening slowly escalates and unfolds, as each course becomes more bizarre, and guests’ secrets are revealed. All these lead to a series of violent events that is part of Chef Slowik’s elaborate menu, culminating in a shocking finale that no one expects.
“The Menu” is now screening in the following theaters nationwide.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day 2023 comes the third installment of the blockbuster “Magic Mike” film franchise, the musical comedy Magic Mike’s Last Dance. Check out the film’s official trailer.
Trailer Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures
The creative team behind the first film “Magic Mike,” which garnered praise from critics and audiences alike, has reunited to create the magic again in “Magic Mike’s Last Dance”: Channing Tatum reprises his role as Mike Lane and Steven Soderbergh returns to the helm with a script from Reid Carolin, who also wrote the first two films. And starring alongside Tatum is Salma Hayek Pinault (“House of Gucci,” “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard”).
“Magic” Mike Lane (Tatum) takes to the stage again after a lengthy hiatus, following a business deal that went bust, leaving him broke and taking bartender gigs in Florida. For what he hopes will be one last hurrah, Mike heads to London with a wealthy socialite (Hayek Pinault) who lures him with an offer he can’t refuse…and an agenda all her own. With everything on the line, once Mike discovers what she truly has in mind, will he—and the roster of hot new dancers he’ll have to whip into shape—be able to pull it off?

From its premiere last year with QCinema, How to Die Young in Manila by Petersen Vargas is about a surreal meet-up amidst a violent setting.
The film, which has been exhibited in Busan, LA Outfest & Singapore, stars Elijah Canlas where he portrays a teenage boy following a group of young hustlers, thinking one of them may be the anonymous hook-up he has arranged to meet for the night. As he anxiously finds a way to get closer, each of the other boys inexplicably turn up as dead bodies strewn in pavements, until only one of them is left.
The third short film by Cinemalaya Best Director awardee Gabriel Serrano is loosely based on a lost silent film by Jose Nepomuceno that reimagines classic Philippine folklore into a contemporary diptych of feminine bodies, rage, and freedom. Dikit portrays a young woman with a monstrous secret and she desperately longs for a different body. When a new couple moves in next door, she sees her chance to finally get one.
Another silent short similarly explores queer horror elements. Alingasngas ng Mga Kuliglig by Vahn Pascual, which is a product of the Mit Out Sound Lab last year, shows a young man who is coerced by his father to become the next folk healer of their town. Things do not go as planned when he falls in love with a tikbalang.
Young filmmaking duo, Kaj Palanca & Celeste Joven, won the 2016 QCinema Audience Award for their debut short, Contestant No. 4. A young boy, who frequently visits an old man who lives alone, chances upon the latter watching a dated clip of himself as a cross-dressing boy. As the movie progresses, the two main characters gain a richer understanding of how the weight of life and identity should be carried.
Two other QCinema shorts complete the program that offers contrasting glimpses of queer experience. Isang Daa’t Isang Mariposa, by Norvin de los Santos, was nominated as Urian Best Short Film in 2019. A religious 100-year-old trans woman visits her ex-lover’s son to bail him out of jail. She uses her P100,000 government award for centenaries for one last chance at love.
Focusing on a gay teenager who develops an anonymous sexual affair with a mature man online, i get so sad sometimes by Trishtan Perez won the Best Short Film at QCinema last year. When the stranger finally promises that he’ll reveal his face the day after, the former couldn’t contain his excitement but must only keep it to himself.
Catch these remarkable collection of shorts on QCinema’s theatrical venues as well as via Vivamax VOD streaming platform.
