The iconic slasher franchise is back for another installment in Scream VI. Another Ghostface rises to terrorize the survivors of its predecessors, from Scream staple Gale Weathers to its most recent victims, the Carpenter siblings.
But before you see the slashing and screaming on the big screen, here’s a round-up of some facts about the new horror movie that you might not know about.
1. Ghostface goes to the Big Apple.
While it all began in (and always leads back to) Woodsboro, the Scream franchise has taken place in different locations, with a new set of Ghostface killers following its protagonists wherever they go. This film is no exception.
After the events of the fifth Scream movie, the survivors try to start a new life in New York, but sure enough, even the bustling city wouldn’t be able to protect them from a new Ghostface killer on the loose.

2. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are back as directors.
Scream VI is the second film not helmed by its creator Wes Craven, after the filmmaker’s passing in 2015. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett– collectively known as Radio Silence– who directed the 2022 Scream film are back to direct the sequel, which was actually written before the fifth movie.
“It really moves like it’s on rocket fuel,” director Gillett told TOTAL FILMin an interview. “You sit down, it starts, and the movie is just a ride. You get off two hours later, and you feel like you haven’t taken a breath.”
3. Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Courteney Cox, & more familiar faces return alongside new characters.
Returning for the sixth installment of the film is Scream regular Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers as well as Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed from Scream 4 and Scream 5. They will once again join the new set of Scream protagonists Sam Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera, and her sister Tara portrayed by Jenna Ortega.
Other returning survivors from the previous film include Mason Gooding’s Chad Meeks-Martin and his sister, Jasmin Savoy Brown’s Mindy. New characters include Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Henry Czerny, Dermot Mulroney, Jack Champion, Josh Segarra, Liana Liberato, and Devyn Nekoda.
4. The longtime protagonist Sidney Prescott will not be returning.
While the Scream films have had different main characters, the first “final girl” Sidney Prescott has always played a major role in the franchise. But the character will not be returning for the new movie as Neve Campbell decided to step away from the role because of the salary offer she calls “sexist.”
“I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise,” Campbell told Deadline. “It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”

While there are unconfirmed rumors about the salary negotiations getting a resolution and Campbell making a surprise cameo in the new film, what the directors did confirm is that Campbell can still return to the franchise in the future.
5. A “bolder, more brazen” Ghostface.
Of course, the identity of the latest Ghostface killer remains to be seen on the big screen, but if we expect the franchise’s tried and tested formula to be applied in the sixth installment, we’ll get another pair of killers donning the Ghostface mask.
The directors did comment about their newest Ghostface in an interview with TOTAL FILM: “We wanted to make this really different, while still having all the stuff you love. Having a bolder, more brazen Ghostface was a big part of that.”

What Mills and Koa don’t know is that the planet they have landed on is our own Earth – 65 million years ago. As they begin their epic journey toward their only means of escape, they are hunted by vicious packs of dinosaurs that stalk them across a dangerous landscape.
For Adam Driver, the chance to play a character whose physical battle to survive mirrors his emotional battle was impossible to resist. “Every scale of filmmaking interests me and no filmmaking experience is alike. This movie, 65, particularly seemed like a unique, big swing, because it was dinosaurs, so the scale was big, but it had room for thoughtful characters and big overall themes, while being extremely entertaining. When families go as a group to see the same film in a theatre, it’s a special thing to be a part of.”
Adam Driver garnered critical acclaim for his role in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, for which he received Academy Award®, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild nominations in the category of Best Actor, and also the Best Actor Gotham Award. Additional accolades include his performance in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, in which he co-starred alongside John David Washington, and garnered Academy Award®, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild nominations in the category of Best Supporting Actor.
His other film credits include Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi; J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Star Wars: The Force Awakens; Shawn Levy’s This Is Where I Leave You, Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories; Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln; and Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar.
In cinemas across the Philippines starting March 8, 65 is distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Connect with the hashtag #65Movie
Broadcasting students from Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Manila are preparing to join more film festivals and apply for production grants after gracing several events organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).
LPU Manila Central Student Government (LYCESGO) Secretary – College of Arts and Sciences Representative Gwyneth Zoe Madrid led her fellow Bachelor of Arts in Broadcasting seniors Shadrach Corro, Maryzusie Gaspi, Patricia Lorein Morales, Mikhaella Navarro, Sam Pineda, Angelo Gutierrez Relucio, and Ellaine Sta. Cruz, as they attended screenings for UFlix, a platform for short films made by Filipino students, and a forum gathering student filmmakers and educators at the Cinematheque Centre Manila. They also represented the LPU League of Young Communication Artists and Journalists (LYCAJ).
“The FDCP’s UFlix gave us a glimpse of hope amidst the drastic situation of the Filipino film industry. As a media practitioner and a soon-to-be filmmaker, we must hold the line and produce relevant films that will continue to tell the stories of the masses, most especially the unseen and unheard,” Madrid shared.
Meanwhile, Relucio, who serves as LPU Manila Chorale Property Manager, echoed Madrid’s sentiments. “It brings potential information for students who wish to pursue this passion, and it presents an excellent chance for me to embrace and fulfill my ambition.”
The Cinematheque Centres nationwide screened films from different student filmmakers, film organizations, and production teams. With its aim to extend support for the industry, the FDCP is building a platform to provide support, and make resources more accessible in the academic setting.
The LPU Broadcasting seniors plan to participate in the program as they have also wrapped up shooting their short films for their Production of Text for Broadcasting, Interactive, and Emerging Media class.
“Palit Ulo,” directed by Rizza Camingawan and written by Muriel Barcenas for Arim Productions, was adjudged Best Film among the POT Shorts while “Panyong Puti,” written and directed by Sta. Cruz for Alab Production, received the Special Jury Award.
Camingawan and Barcenas collaborated with executive producer Gaspi, assistant director Morales, cinematographer and editor Edrian Kagahastian, and camera operator Louise Althea Bukas. Sta. Cruz, on the other hand, got ample support from assistant director and co-writer Janil Versola, creative director and wardrobe stylist Rovic Ramos, director of photography Jonathan Ducado, videographer Cayler Filio, and editor Pineda.
Completing the POT Shorts are “Akala” from director and production manager Corro, assistant director Nica Mae Macam, writer Hanna Legaspi, camera person and editor Kiarra Faye Manlapig, and lights crew Jared Aguilar and Myra Contreras; “Ay?!” from director Allyiah Astorga, executive producer Madrid, assistant director Relucio, scriptwriter Marielle Valencia, DOP Jonathan Ducado, and actor Regelyn Toledo; and “Tikom” from director Jonnalyn Alday, producer and PM Navarro, scriptwriter Julce Marie Reyes, cinematographer and editor Miguel Serrano, and production designer Ayessa Emille Estrellado.
FDCP’s initiatives aimed at cultivating a new generation of filmmakers, such as the Academic Film Society and the Student Film Assistance Program, are set to be launched this month. The AFS is a program that will connect schools, colleges, and universities with existing film programs, film clubs or related student organizations.
This means horror fans are guaranteed to watch Scream VI in its integral, original version, as the filmmakers intended it to be seen when it opens nationwide on March 8.
The MTRCB reached an R-18 decision as “the film contains graphic but non-gratuitous depiction of horror, frightening scenes, violence and gore, that may not be suitable for viewers below eighteen (18) years of age.”
Scream VI castmember Melissa Barrera recently told Collider that the upcoming sequel has the potential to be 100 times gorier than any previous entry in the long-running horror franchise. According to the actor, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett were always asking to increase the amount of blood on set.
“With the last ‘Scream,’ they were tip-toeing and trying to be very respectful of what the franchise had been, up until that point, and keeping their inner gory dreams at bay,” Barrera added. “But with this one, they were like, ‘We’re going all out.’ It’s potentially a hundred times gorier.”
