  • Fierce Fighters: Introducing the women of “Dungeons & Dragons”

    MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ (HOLGA THE BARBARIAN)

Famed for her work as Letty in the Fast & Furious films, Rodriguez possessed the charisma and the athleticism to play an unstoppable warrior who is supremely skilled in combat. On the battlefield, Holga’s inner rage takes over, giving her almost superhuman strength and resilience. “Michelle has this inherent toughness that she brings to the table,” Latcham says. “She’s just a badass.”

    Michelle Rodriguez the Barbarian resized

Although Holga is formidable, lethal, and intimidating, above all, she is deeply loyal to those she loves. When the film opens, Holga and her best friend, the bard Edgin (played by Chris Pine) are locked away in the notorious prison Revel’s End. Although the duo had once been the leaders of a merry band of well-meaning thieves, their circumstances changed dramatically after a heist gone wrong.

“He’s like her brother in a sense,” says Rodriguez of her character’s relationship with Edgin. “She’d never admit it, but when you’re shunned by the world and you find acceptance somewhere, it’s a beautiful thing.”

The two lead a scrappy band of unlikely heroes – including a paladin (Regé-Jean Page), a sorcerer (Justice Smith) and a Druid (Sophia Lillis). Together, they undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.

    SOPHIA LILLIS (DORIC THE DRUID)

As a Tiefling, Lillis’ character Doric has curved horns that sprout from her skull and as a Druid wields magic derived from nature. “Her go-to forms of combat are her slingshot gauntlet and turning into different animals,” explains Lillis.

    Sophi Lillis the Druid resized

She’s also the group’s truth-telling shapeshifter. “With all these people who blow things up and make horrible plans, you really need one person there who’s just completely deadpan, saying, ‘This makes no sense,’” Lillis says. “Doric, the way she was written, she’s a really fun character to work with because I got to be that deadpan person.”

Although Tieflings are typically loners, Doric was taken in as a young child by a group of wood elves, a race now under threat by Edgin and Holga’s nemesis Forge (played by Hugh Grant). And that is the thing that ultimately motivates her to sign up with Edgin, Holga and the rest of the gang. “She would do whatever she can to protect them because they helped her when she was a kid,” says Lillis, herself an experienced D&D player. “Tieflings usually are independent, but she really wants a family. She wants a home. So when these bunch of idiots come to her and say, ‘We want to take down Forge,’ she goes along with them, and it ends up being something more.”

    THE HEART OF IT ALL

Pine, who is also one of the film’s executive producers, has nothing but high praise for the characters and cast of the film. At the heart of it all, Pine notes, is the camaraderie and comedy that develops among a memorable group of characters who truly come to care about one another as the eclectic members of a found family. “You have a story about a ragtag group of people that are going up against immense odds and immense nemeses and very much looks like they’re not going to be able to succeed,” he says. “This is a fun film. This is big, emotive great old-fashioned moviemaking.”

  • Film Facts: 5 Things to Know About ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’

This week, the fantastical world of the roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons is coming to the big screen through the new movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves! Watch the trailer for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves below:

Before you see the epic fantasy movie in theaters this week, we’ve rounded up a few facts about it that you might not know about!

    1. This is not the first Dungeons & Dragons movie.

Before Honor Among Thieves, there has already been an attempt to turn the beloved tabletop game into a movie franchise. In 2000, the movie Dungeons & Dragons starring Jeremy Irons and Marlon Wayans was released and will expand to become a trilogy in the next twelve years. If you haven’t heard about it or you don’t remember seeing it, then don’t be surprised because the franchise flopped. Despite having such a history, one can expect that the new adaptation has more to offer with today’s CGI and an all-star cast.

    2. A star-studded cast for a colorful crew of characters.

Aside from the rich world of D&D as its setting, another selling point for the movie comes in the form of its star-studded cast whose members are not new to the fantasy and action genres. Leading the group is the charming thief Edgin played by Star Trek movie star Chris Pine; with Fast & Furious actress Michelle Rodriguez as the barbarian Holga; Regé-Jean Page of The Gray Man as Xenk the paladin; Detective Pikachu‘s Justice Smith as Simon the sorcerer; and Sophia Lillis of the It movies stars as the druid Doric.

    3. The film is written and directed by the writers of Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Flash.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein serve as the writers and directors for the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie. The two have collaborated on multiple projects before, including Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Homecoming and the upcoming DC flick The Flash. They’ve also directed the comedy movies Game Night and Vacation.

Photo: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer

The film was reportedly bouncing around studios for years before Paramount took it. When asked what made the famous roleplaying game hard to get adapted into a film, the directors answered: “Sometimes people take it too seriously and want to embrace the more dramatic elements of it,” Daley told Variety in an interview. “To us, that’s ridiculous, because you’ve got literally brains with four legs — you know, creatures that were so obviously written with a wink. On the flip side, if you try to get too goofy with it, you’re also doing it a disservice.”

“What we learned doing ‘Spider Man: Homecoming’ was that while you have to have a certain reverence for and love of the source material, you can’t let the weight of that thing hinder your creativity,” Goldstein added.

    4. Familiar beasts will delight D&D fans.

There are numerous creatures from the Dungeons & Dragons lore that will be featured in the movie. Some of the monsters confirmed to appear in the movie include the Mimic, the Gelatinous Cube, Intellect Devourers, an Owlbear, the Displacer Beast, the Black Dragon, and Giant Spiders.

    5. The Dungeons & Dragons directors share how they conveyed the spirit of the game in the movie.

In an interview with Variety, Daley and Goldstein shared how they maintained the spirit of the game in the movie, considering that there are no set characters or story in D&D.

“It’s a combination of things,” shared Daley. “Each character represents a different player and how they go about playing the game. Xenk, played by Regé-Jean Page, is very much the nerdy player that doesn’t make jokes and adheres strictly to the rulebook. Whereas Edgin, Chris Pine’s character, is the more casual player. He doesn’t bother to learn about the Bardic spells and would prefer to just hit people over the head with his lute.”

“The movie is almost like the dungeon master,” Goldstein added. “The plot twists that we throw at our characters are what a DM would do at the table, just to screw with you and make it more fun. It was our way of capturing what goes on when you’re playing D&D, without breaking the fourth wall or becoming meta with it.”

  • John Wick Chapter 4: A Thrilling Ride with Some Bumps Along the Way

We delve into the world of John Wick: Chapter 4, the latest installment in the adrenaline-fueled action series starring Keanu Reeves as the legendary hitman. This highly anticipated film, directed by Chad Stahelski, has fans on the edge of their seats, eager to see the continuation of John Wick’s quest for vengeance.

John Wick: Chapter 4 picks up right where Chapter 3 – Parabellum left off, with our protagonist on the run and fighting for his life. This movie offers a deeper look into the complex web of alliances and enemies that make up the John Wick universe, introducing fresh faces and exotic locations. However, the plot can get convoluted, which might leave some viewers scratching their heads.

Keanu Reeves returns to deliver another stellar performance as John Wick, showcasing his dedication to the role through intense martial arts training and weapons handling. Reeves’ portrayal of vulnerability and raw emotion amidst the chaos is captivating and ensures that audiences remain invested in his character’s journey.

    John Wick Chapter 4 4

The supporting cast, featuring Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Donnie Yen, complement Reeves’ performance with their own charisma and skill. The relationships and rivalries between these characters add depth to the story and contribute to the movie’s overall appeal.

A key strength of the John Wick series lies in its breathtaking action sequences, and Chapter 4 does not disappoint. With top-notch fight choreography and pulse-pounding gunplay, the film offers some of the best action scenes in the franchise. However, there are moments when the action borders on excessive, leading to “action fatigue” and diminishing the overall impact of the movie.

    John Wick Chapter 4 2

The cinematography in John Wick: Chapter 4 is visually striking, with Dan Laustsen’s expertly crafted shots emphasizing the beauty and brutality of the movie’s locations. The rich and varied color palette enhances the film’s immersive quality, drawing viewers into the vibrant world of John Wick.

    John Wick Chapter 4 1

Despite these strengths, the film’s script and pacing leave room for improvement. While the expansion of the John Wick universe is intriguing, the convoluted storyline and sometimes clunky dialogue can be frustrating. Additionally, the movie’s score, though effective in heightening tension, lacks the memorable themes that could have set it apart from other action film soundtracks.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is a thrilling, albeit flawed, addition to the franchise. It is a must-watch for fans of the series and action enthusiasts, but those seeking a more coherent and emotionally satisfying narrative may find it lacking.

  • Unlikely Heroes: Meet the Guys of “Dungeons & Dragons”

When the movie “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” opens, unfailingly optimistic bard Edgin (played by Chris Pine) and his best friend, the barbarian fighter Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), are locked away in the notorious prison Revel’s End, a result of the betrayal by the nefarious Forge Fitzwilliam (Hugh Grant), who took Edgin’s beloved daughter Kira to live as his ward in the great metropolis of Neverwinter where Forge installed himself as ruler.

On a mission to take back what has been lost to him, Edgin escapes together with Holga. Along the way, they are joined in their quest by an insecure sorcerer, a paladin and a Tiefling.

    CHRIS PINE (EDGIN THE BARD)

Chris Pine as The Bard resized

Leading the cast is Chris Pine, who plays extroverted bard Edgin Darvis. “He will make the best out of any situation,” says Pine of his character. “He might seem like he has his stuff together, but more often than not, he’s winging it. It makes him, I think, a likable thief.”

Although Pine is no stranger to blockbuster filmmaking – having starred as Capt. James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ trilogy of Star Trek films and having played Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman movies – he was new to the world of Dungeons & Dragons. In an ideal confluence of events, the same week he was offered the role in the new film, Pine happened to be hosting his nephew’s D&D group at his home. He decided to sit in on the campaign and was immediately hooked.

“I ended up playing with my entire family – my parents, my sister, my nephew, the two Dungeon Masters that run the game for my nephew – and we had a blast,” Pine says. “It’s such an incredibly creative game. It’s a game that depends on performance and investment and allowing for whatever comes and not censoring yourself and having fun. It teaches so many things from camaraderie to friendship to strategizing to team building. It’s joyful.”

    REGÉ-JEAN PAGE (XENK THE PALADIN)

Rege Jean Page as The Paladin resized

Among the characters Edgin and his best friend Holga meet along the way is handsome paladin Xenk Yendar, played by breakout Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page. Despite the character’s youthful appearance, Xenk is cursed with unnaturally long life after having narrowly escaped a ritual that transformed the residents of Thay into the undead. “Xenk is a very old man stuck in a young and virile man’s body,” says Page. “He is sworn to heroism. He’s infuriatingly upright, moral, a perfect paladin hero. Within D&D, paladins are known for being slightly overly heroic and showy. The joy of Xenk is that he’s all those things yet utterly unaware of them. He exists mostly to infuriate our group by being the hero that they’re not quite.”

Says Pine of the paladin member of their quest, “Xenk is the perfect man personified, and Edgin, who might like to believe himself to be a great version of the species, has to encounter the guy. He just hates the fact that Xenk has his stuff together. So, Edgin uses his nephecibility and his wit to try to cut this guy down to size—but he’s incapable of being cut down to size.”

    JUSTICE SMITH (SIMON THE SORCERER)

Justice Smith as the sorcerer resized

While Xenk exudes confidence, half-elf wizard Simon Aumar does not. He often struggles to perform even basic magic, despite the fact that wizarding runs in his blood – he is descended from the great sorcerer Elminster Aumar. “He is riddled with insecurity about his magic,” says actor Justice Smith who won the role. “He has internalized that he is never going to be enough and bathes in his own self-deprecation and has resorted to using his tricks for petty thievery.”

But Simon also displays a surprising level of acceptance about his own shortcomings. “The thing that I find beautiful about Simon is that he’s not necessarily upset that he’s not good at magic,” says Smith. “He really has come to terms with it, and I love the idea of someone who’s practical about where they’re at and not in a woe-is-me kind of way. But it definitely is his obstacle throughout the story, trying to come into his own power.”

    A REAL D&D BONDING EXPERIENCE

Once all the principal roles had been cast (including Rodriguez as Holga, Sophia Lillis as Doric, Chloe Coleman as Kira, and Daisy Head as Sofina), the filmmakers created a unique opportunity for the actors to bond, organizing a D&D campaign run by an experienced DM from Seattle, Wash.-based Wizards of the Coast. “We had the entire cast around the table, playing this unique one-shot adventure that she’d come up with for the team,” producer Latcham explains, noting that directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley joined as the character Jarnathan, who represents the race of nomadic bird-people known as the Aarakocra.

“They were there for four-and-a-half, five hours around the table playing, getting to know each other, understanding each other’s sense of humor, understanding each other’s sense of timing,” Latcham says. “To see them all come together, having fun was a delight.”

  • The Pope’s Exorcist is your next must-watch horror movie

Bringing the story of Father Gabriele Amorth, known by some as the Dean of Exorcists and to others as the Vatican’s Exorcist, to the big screen was no easy task.

    Watch the trailer below:

Before The Pope’s Exorcist, other producers had tried to adapt Father Amorth’s best-selling memoirs into a film but none were able to convince the celebrated priest – except for Michael Patrick Kaczmarek, one of the producers of The Pope’s Exorcist.

“I believe I was able to succeed where other producers failed in that I was able to convince Father Amorth about my sincere religious devotion,” explains Kaczmarek. “In our exchanges, I was able to convince him that if he took the chance to work with me, that I would try to make sure the Catholicity would be preserved in the film – and that he would be respected as a person along with the Church and his religious order.”

The Popes Excorcist prod still 1
Father Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe, right) in Screen Gems’ THE POPE’S EXORCIST.

The producers lovingly refer to the film as “the James Bond of exorcists” because of the wealth of stories, anecdotes and real exorcism cases from its source material, Amorth’s memoirs An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories.

In The Pope’s Exorcist, Amorth is played by Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe. “Gabriele Amorth had a purity of faith that gave him a level of courage and bravery to do the job,” says Crowe. “It’s a very dark pursuit – you’re dealing a lot with people who are suffering deeply.”

The Popes Excorcist prod still 2
Father Esquibel (Daniel Zovatto) and Father Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe) in Screen Gems’ THE POPE’S EXORCIST.

To make the film frightening beyond the jump scares, screenwriter Michael Petroni created a narrative that seeks to delve deep into the motivations of the devil. “This required our character of Father Amorth to do some serious investigating and uncovering of a secret history, to find connections where the demon might have appeared before,” says producer Kaczmarek.

In the film, Father Amorth and his partner, Father Esquibel, played by Daniel Zovatto, investigate a possession at St. Sebastian Abbey in Castile, Spain, where a young family is making a fresh start by renovating the old property. “In the movie, the abbey has a long history with the Catholic Church, and there are some things that happened there which get uncovered,” says Crowe. “These events took place during some of the darkest days of the Catholic Church, as punishment was meted out to people who didn’t measure up to the depth of their belief. We all thought that that was an excellent way to dig deeper into the history of Spain.”

Lending greater authenticity to the film is executive producer Edward Siebert, S.J., a Jesuit priest and founder of Loyola Productions.

“Stories of good and evil are as old as time but the story of Father Amorth and his unique role in fighting evil is an important story to tell,” says Siebert. “The Pope’s Exorcist reflects on some of the most challenging aspects of faith. When we shed light on sin and evil, it reflects back the pain of our past and present. While the demons in the film may seem extreme and exaggerated, the movements of disturbance and evil inside of us have the power to overtake us. I have always believed that the power of prayer, the naming of demons, the forgiveness of sins, and the conquering of evil are central to faith. Any story that ends with the enemy’s defeat is ultimately a story of hope.”

In cinemas starting April 19, The Pope’s Exorcist is distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Connect with the hashtag #ThePopesExorcist
