“Steven basically grew up on Michael’s movies, and we’ve never had somebody like that step into the director role before now,” says Mark Vahradian, one of the producers of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, in cinemas June 7. “He had a very different view of the Transformers characters and what was special about them, so to hand this movie over to somebody like him, who’s younger and has a fresh perspective, was a way for us to make sure the film felt different from all the others in the series, particularly in terms of the emotional quality of the story.”
Caple recalls how much he loved the original Beast Wars: Transformers animated series as a child and as a special treat for fellow fans Caple purposefully included several fun Easter eggs and sly visual nods throughout the movie. “I dropped them in specifically for true Beast Wars fans, and I think they’ll be very happy with what we’ve come up with,” he says.
To play Noah, the former Army private struggling to support his mother and his ailing younger brother, the filmmakers knew they needed an actor charismatic enough to stand toe-to-steel-toe with his towering robotic co-stars. After getting an advance look at the award-winning 2021 musical In the Heights, the clear choice, says producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, was Anthony Ramos.
Portraying Noah in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was the culmination of a boyhood dream for Ramos, who grew up watching the Beast Wars animated TV series in his Brooklyn home.
Describing the film as an ensemble piece about characters from different worlds who learn to rely on each other, Ramos says he believes the movie’s underlying message will resonate strongly with viewers from all walks of life. “The connection Noah develops with these massive robots is what makes this film interesting, and it’s an important message for the whole world. It says, whoever you are, and wherever you’re from, there’s a common ground between everyone, and I think there’s something beautiful in that.”
When casting the role of Elena Wallace, the dedicated museum researcher whose curiosity leads her to discover an alien secret hidden within a winged statuette, the filmmakers set out to find someone who could convincingly portray a young Brooklyn-born anthropologist with a taste for adventure. Their search led them to award-winning actress Dominique Fishback.
Caple says he responded to Fishback’s innate sense of strength, stability and poise in nearly every situation. “Dominique brings a level of groundedness to whatever she does, and when you’re creating a world filled with imaginary robots and aliens, you need somebody to help ground things in reality, and Dominique does that completely.”
One of Fishback’s goals in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was to show the audience, once and for all, that the series is every bit as much about people as it is about Autobots and Maximals. “Some fans just love the robots and they don’t care about the human characters as much, so I told Steven that I wanted to prove why the humans are important,” she says. “Because the way I see it, this is really a movie about humanity. It’s about heart and feelings.”

Directed by Steven Caple Jr. and starring Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, the film arrives in theaters June 7.
The screenplay is by Joby Harold and Darnell Metayer & Josh Peters and Erich Hoeber & Jon Hoeber, story by Joby Harold, based on Hasbro’s Transformers™ Action Figures.

Reactions for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are in and they couldn’t be more positive, with critics raving about the follow-up film, calling it a masterpiece not just because of its animation, but also because of its story.
See what critics are saying here:
“The moment SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE ended, I knew I’d experienced a cinematic moment I’d cherish forever,” says Fox-TV’s Jake Hamilton, who further describes the sequel as an “awe-inspiring masterpiece” and “the best Spider-Man film ever made.”
Drew Taylor of the New York Times says, “#SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse is a stunning achievement. Yes, it’s visually dazzling, with expansive, expressive new realms (Gwen’s world is my favorite). But the movie’s real superpower is its emotional depth and its beautiful, melancholic tone. I love this movie so, so much ”
Tessa Smith, who writes for Rotten Tomatoes, raves that Across the Spider-Verse has achieved the rare feat of a sequel topping its predecessor. “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse raised the bar with its unique animation style & way of storytelling,” she writes. “Minds were blown when it was released & fans thought there was no way it could be topped. Think again. #SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse raises its own bar which seemed impossible.”
Steven Weintraub of Collider can’t wait to see the film again. “Absolutely loved #SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse. Wanted to push pause about a hundred times to study the incredible artistry on display,” he shares. “Cannot recommend this film enough and already looking forward to seeing it again. Next time in @IMAX!”
Screenrant’s Joseph Deckelmeier can’t contain his excitement as he writes, “The hype is real! Every frame of #SpiderMan #AcrossTheSpiderVerse is gorgeous. I didn’t want to blink because I didn’t want to miss anything. You can watch this film over & over & find something new to enjoy.”
Goggler, a popular website and podcast from Malaysia, shares their enthusiasm as well. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is an absolute monument to the power of cinema to affect, and inspire, and to bring joy,” they write. “We didn’t think it was possible but everything about this is better than the first.”
Finally, Erik Davis from Fandango raves about the film, too, describing it as “visually breathtaking” and “unlike anything you will see in a movie theater.”
In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man reunites with Gwen Stacy and they are catapulted across the Multiverse, where they encounter the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse’s very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most. Anyone can wear the mask – it’s how you wear it that makes you a hero. The next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga opens in Philippine cinemas May 31.

Watching movies at cinemas has always been a great parent-child and family bonding activity that cut across generations. However, the pandemic deprived many families of this bonding experience. Halle Bailey as Ariel Halle, breathes new life into Ariel, portraying her vivacity and curiosity with sincere passion, spoke passionately about her role. Ariel had helped her find her “young woman version.” Given that she was 18 when she started this journey and now, five years later, she finds herself transformed through the themes of the film and Ariel’s character. “From 18 to now being 23, so those are like very intense like transformative years as you’re developing as a young woman. But I feel like especially these themes of the film and what she had to go through with her passions and drive and speaking up for herself, and even though it may be scary, she went for it. I feel like those things I really try to adopt and give to Halle now. So, she’s taught me so much, for sure.” Ariel’s determination, self-expression, and bravery, despite the odds, have instilled in her qualities that she now carries in her everyday life.
Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric Jonah Hauer-King, the charming actor portraying Prince Eric, brings a fresh and relatable take on Prince Eric, capturing his adventurous spirit and longing for something more. Despite the pressure that comes with assuming such an adored role, Hauer-King expressed the exhilaration of stepping into such a cherished role. He mentioned a moving moment where Art Malik’s grandson was completely absorbed in the film during a viewing, underlining the profound influence of the story on young viewers. His remarks underscored the extraordinary responsibility resting on the actors’ shoulders as they introduce these ageless characters to a new generation. “So, the Disney prince and the Disney princess aspect is amazing and it’s fun and exciting, but I think watching it last night made me realize that for all of us, even though we’re living in this fantasy space, it just feels really connected to the world and to the real world.”
In a lighthearted twist, Hauer-King playfully contrasted his previous works with The Little Mermaid, expressing joy that his children can now appreciate one of his films. His depiction of Prince Eric reflects a transformative journey, navigated with heartfelt warmth and sincerity.
Melissa McCarthy as Ursula Melissa McCarthy, renowned for her comedic prowess, embraced the role of Ursula, the film’s iconic villain, with open arms. She kicked off the conversation at the press conference by expressing her delight at the grandeur of the movie’s premiere. Hollywood Boulevard, she noted, had transformed into a shimmering sea of blue, a spectacle that rekindled her deep-rooted love for making movies. The transformation wasn’t just physical; it symbolized the climax of years of dedication and hard work invested in the project. For McCarthy, the anticipation of unveiling their work was comparable to sending a child off to school, filled with a mix of nervousness and excitement.
Daveed Diggs as Sebastian Daveed Diggs, who voices the lovable and charismatic Sebastian, highlighted his remarkable experience with “The Little Mermaid.” Despite his rich portfolio including “Hamilton” and “Blindspotting,” Diggs found the journey with this project uniquely profound. Balancing grandeur with intimacy, the cast built a world from scratch during rehearsals, culminating into a larger-than-life spectacle on screen. “And so to just sit there and be struck by it, it’s just… it is really cool, to see a thing that, like, you thought only existed in your imagination” Diggs reflected. Diggs described being part of “The Little Mermaid” as one of the coolest experiences he has ever had.
He highlighted the scale of the movie’s production, comparing it to creating a small piece of art that later manifested into a larger-than-life spectacle. The cast, in their rehearsals, worked as if they were part of a small community theater—pushing boxes around to create makeshift sets, and immersing themselves in their characters and the world they were building.
Javier Bardem as King Triton Javier Bardem, who stepped into the role of Ariel’s stern yet loving father, King Triton, shared his experiences during the conference. A question was raised about his feelings toward Bailey, mirroring their on-screen father-daughter dynamic. Bardem confessed that from their very first meeting, he was absolutely enchanted by Bailey. “I feel it was easy for us just to connect and [dance?] together. And I was always mesmerized by the quality of her as a performer, let alone the singing that I knew.” Bardem expressed admiration for her prowess as a performer, and the courage she displayed, contributing to a natural and fruitful collaboration.
Further, Bardem was deeply moved by the audience’s palpable and heartfelt connection with the film. The cheers, support, and visible appreciation from the crowd served as a testament to the cast and crew’s diligent work on the movie. This, in turn, made the premiere night an unforgettable experience for Bardem.
Jacob Tremblay as Flounder In his role as Flounder, Ariel’s loyal fish friend, Jacob Tremblay shared his thoughts and experiences. He mentioned the strong camaraderie that developed among the cast while working together in the recording studio in England. This sense of togetherness significantly improved their voice work and the ability to perform scenes in the same physical space, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, was a cherished opportunity. “I will say that it was really fun, and I was really nervous at the start, obviously. But everyone was there kind of cheering me on, so, after a while, I felt really comfortable and just had fun with it.” Although he jokingly admitted that he can’t sing his character’s parts anymore without his voice cracking, Tremblay’s affection for the family-like environment on set shone through clearly.
Awkwafina as Scuttle Awkwafina, voicing Ariel’s eccentric seagull friend Scuttle, shared her unique approach to embodying this beloved character. She expressed agreement with Tremblay’s observations about the unorthodox rehearsal process, which had all the actors reading scenes together — a strategy seldom utilized in animated or live-action productions. For Awkwafina, this marked a first in her career and resulted in an invaluable experience. She depicted the ambiance as “crazy,” attributing the majority of their performances to the collaborative environment fostered on that special day.
Adding to the discussion on the film’s diverse cast, Awkwafina stated, “I think it reflects the world we live in. And I think that everyone deserves to see themselves on screen,” underscoring the significance of on-screen representation. When questioned about her affinity with Scuttle, she humorously concurred, confessing that after a few margaritas on a Tuesday, she finds herself sharing Scuttle’s neurotic traits.
Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina Noma Dumezweni, playing the newly introduced Queen Selina, shared her journey with the character. She expressed her trust in the creative team, saying, “In the loveliest way, no challenges… I was very lucky. All I do is just trust the people I’m working with.” She acknowledged the directors’ skill in fostering a positive and collaborative environment, which she attributed to their strong theatrical roots. Dumezweni also appreciated their commitment to rehearsals and their knack for making every cast member feel significant.
Unforgettable Filming Experiences
When it comes to unforgettable experiences during filming, Halle Bailey had a great story to tell. Shooting a storm scene with Jonah Hauer-King in a tank at Pinewood, she remembered the hilarious trouble they had trying to keep afloat because of Jonah’s boots, which kept making him sink and step on her toes. Despite the physical challenges, the experience strengthened their bond and added to the authenticity of their performances.
The Little Mermaid | The Cast Goes Under The Sea
Melissa McCarthy shared her experiences during filming. For her, the best part encompassed every single moment, from rehearsals to scenes in a massive 60-foot clam shell. She found the entire process personal, intimate, and heartwarming, largely thanks to director Rob Marshall, who she described as a soft, gentle cheerleader appreciating everyone’s contribution. The most challenging part for Melissa was living up to the high standards set by the director and her talented co-stars. Interestingly, she shared that during the filming, she never physically touched the ground due to various rigs and supports used for her character, Ursula. She expressed her admiration for the amazing team of dancers and stunt people who acted as her ‘fins’ or ‘feet’ during the scenes. The entire production, according to Melissa, was a magnificent ensemble effort. The camaraderie among the cast and crew was evident, fostering a collaborative and energetic atmosphere that transcended into their performances. That said, the most challenging part was meeting the high standards set by Marshall and her fellow cast members. The team’s collective commitment to excellence fueled her to bring out her best, embodying the cunning and charismatic Ursula that audiences will love to hate.
One of the highlights of the discussion revolved around the unique rehearsal process. Directors Rob Marshall and John DeLuca implemented a system heavily influenced by their theater backgrounds, encouraging collaboration and improvisation. This was a novel experience for many of the cast, allowing them to form a genuine familial bond.
Anticipation and Expectations
The anticipation surrounding Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” is massive. With a story that’s enchanted audiences for decades, the expectations are high. But from the insights shared by the cast at the global press conference, it’s evident that they’ve embraced their roles with an understanding of the characters’ significance and a commitment to making the story resonate with a new generation.
In the transformation “From Animation to Live-Action,” the panel agreed on one crucial element – humanity. The live-action adaptation brought an added layer of realism to these beloved characters, grounding them in relatable emotions and situations. This humanizing aspect offers a fresh perspective to the classic tale, allowing audiences to connect with the narrative on a deeper level.
Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” is set to be a remarkable blend of nostalgia and novelty, carrying forward the spirit of the original while introducing new elements to enchant today’s audiences. The global press conference offered a tantalizing glimpse into the world under the sea that awaits us, filled with beloved characters, memorable music, and a timeless tale of adventure and love.
The Little Mermaid is now showing in cinemas nationwide. Check out screening times and get tickets here.

When ‘The Little Mermaid’ came out in 1989, I was just a ten-year old kid, who grew up on cartoons and musical theater. Watching the original ‘The Little Mermaid’ in the cinemas back when it first came out was a core memory for me: the lush and fluid (for its time) animation, the catchy music and songs of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, the visual romance of the underwater world they crafted and the playful tonal grace that they worked on the first of many new animated series that were based on fairy tales and legends. We hadn’t seen one since ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘Cinderella.’
‘The Little Mermaid’ is just so iconic and I really thought hard about why anyone would want to turn it into a live action remake. What would a live-action remake of the-already perfect cartoon (in my memory) add to the story? There was an innocence that tempered the shades of teen angst and rebellion that came with the original animated feature film. Yes, Ariel fell in love with a boy she’s only seen from a distance and turned her world upside down to be “a part of his world,” which was acceptable in the 90s and in a cartoon character. In a live action remake, my fears came true: the living, breathing portrayal of these characters wouldn’t be able to survive the same scrutiny as its animated counterpart.
The sequences underwater – probably a mix of live footage and a lot of CGI (so how “live-action” is this film?) – are lush and vibrant with a moving fluid tapestry of sea flora and fauna that tries to recreate the romanticism of the underwater world. Director Rob Marshall, not the most subtle of directors, has a tendency of overdoing every image and showing off his massive budget. When we first see Ariel and later, Flounder, and then Sebastian, we are forced to accept these CGI heavy personas as real.
Sure, Hallee Bailey is really there but there is an effect that their hair underwater takes that makes everything look so unflattering (this most obvious with Javier Bardem’s King Triton). In order to approximate being in the water, Bailey, Bardem, Melissa McCarthy (who plays Ursula) must move in very specific ways to simulate being in the water. It isn’t most graceful look and along with the heavy special effects, it’s more distracting than anything else.
In fact, all the actors who have to perform and act under the water are at their worst. It seems they can’t focus on their scene and the emotions because they are involved in the physicality of their movements. McCarthy has the unenviable task of working with Ursula’s relentless blocking – constantly changing positions, mimicking the movements of Ursula in the cartoon – that she can’t really have a moment to just be in character.
And now that Ariel is a living, breathing person – flesh and blood and not literally drawn up – she is now judged for the lengths that she will go to so that she can be part of Eric’s world. She’s a daughter of Triton, a teen with responsibilities over one of the seven seas, and yet she will bring her friend Flounder to forbidden waters where sharks are (and being told that he can’t swim as fast she can) and endanger his life for her fascination with anything above world.
In the cartoon, all these actions – the hoarding of items found in shipwrecks, breaking the rules – take a form of innocence; but in the live action, they feel real, and dangerous, and foolish and hard to root for.
With Bailey, struggling to keep Ariel life-like and in sync with the physics of being under the sea, she isn’t able to give us her all. It is when she makes her deal with Ursula, and she goes above water that you can see the actress at work. Bailey can act and gives Ariel more passion, more fire. She’s a teen at the cusp of womanhood and ready to break loose. It’s a dangerous thing to see, as the film excuses her rebellion as a romantic ideal – of fighting for allowing children to forge their own path – but not realizing that she’s still a teen and her choices have endangered her best friend, she falls in love with a person she watched from afar and makes a deal with a witch.
In a cartoon, it’s excusable. Live action, with Hailee Bailey right there making these decisions, she comes across as spoiled and entitled and deserves all the trouble that comes her way (except other suffer in the wake of her decisions).
Narratively, this version of ‘The Little Mermaid’ takes all the same beats as the original cartoon – except Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) is given more of a backstory and his own song, and they added new songs as well – so they don’t really say anything new about the story. The arc is the same, the ending is the same, nothing has changed but that it’s bigger, that it’s not a cartoon but played out by actual people and what it has done is show how superficial and shallow Ariel’s choices may have been.
There is a parallelism created between Ariel and Eric, two royals whose lives are dictated upon by a parent, and they want something different from what has been planned for them. The film wants the young people to question the paths set upon them by their parents and for parents to listen to their children.
Unfortunately, the film shows us the dangers of allowing teenagers to make grown-up decisions. Sure, everything ended up happily ever after but that’s the Disney touch at work. Even when Ariel gives up her voice to get what she wants, the film gives her two songs that she sings (in her head, to maximize Bailey’s beautiful voice) but what it ends up doing is discrediting the sacrifice that she makes. I actually like one of the new songs, ‘For the First Time,’ but I can’t stand that it invalidates the price that she pays for legs.
Marshall went all out for spectacle and commercial appeal. As subtle as a sledgehammer, he hits all the original beats at their exact spots to appeal to the nostalgia of those who loved the original film and hope the same magic that struck over thirty years ago will happen again with a new generation of viewers.
But judging from the applause and oohs and ahhs of the audience I was with at the cinema, the crowd ate it all up anyway.
