  • MOVIE REVIEW: Merely appealing to nostalgia, ‘Ghosbusters: Frozen Empire’ suffers from a weak story and a bloated cast

With a bloated cast and a hackneyed rebellious teen narrative at the center of it, ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ feels more like a by-the-numbers franchise movie than an actual standalone narrative with interesting, dynamic characters. Set three years after its predecessor, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife,’ the story follows the family of Callie Spengler (an underutilized Carrie Coon) as they have taken on the mantle of the Ghostbusters and are doing exactly that in the streets of New York. Funnily enough, I remember liking ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ but I remember nothing about the movie at all (except that Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd where in it). Coming into this movie, the film does nothing to try and bring back any affection for these characters. Callie’s kids – Trevor and Phoebe (played by Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace, respectively) – have typical teenage behaviour in these kinds of films and do not stand out at all in any way.

Trevor is constantly complaining about everything while Phoebe, a genius who seems to take after her grandfather, is at that precarious stage where she is angry about everything and is looking to start a fight. It’s the central relationship story at the center of ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ and it’s also the least interesting thing about the film.

In the usual hijinks of a Ghostbusters movie, a powerful spirit – this time, in the form of an elder god – is freed (due to the recklessness of Phoebe and her lashing out at the world) and the Ghostbusters – both new and old – must come together to stop it and save the world.

Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard on the set of Columbia Pictures’ GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE.

Directed by Gil Kenan with a script by Kenan and Jason Reitman, the issue with the film is that there are too many characters at play to tell any sort of real cohesive story well. They try to give everyone something to do – from Coon to Rudd to Wolfhard and McKenna and including characters that also appeared in the last film, Logan Kim’s Podcast and Celeste O’Connor’s Lucky Domingo, and the old Ghostbusters, who must make an appearance like Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stanz, Ernie Hudson’s Winston, Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman, and Annie Potts’ Janine Melnitz. But if that’s not enough, they’ve also added Kumail Nanjiani as Nadeen, a man whose heirloom holds the elder god, Emily Alyn Lind, a ghost who befriends Phoebe, James Acaster’s Lars, who is an engineer working for the Ghostbusters, and Patton Oswalt’s librarian.

Lucky (Celeste O’Connor), Nadeem Razmaadi (Kumail Nanjiani), Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Lars Pinfield (James Acaster) in Columbia Pictures’ GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE.

With all these characters, each one is given something to do that it takes away from the time that it needs to properly tell Phoebe’s story. So, without the scenes needed to flesh out her character, Phoebe ends up acting like a spoiled brat who unwittingly brings about the coming of a new ice age and endangers everyone in the process. It’s hilarious because she’s identified as a certifiable genius, capable of understanding quantum physics and the like. She is angry because she is removed from Ghostbusting because she’s actually just 15. It doesn’t help that she disrespects her mom and her mom’s boyfriend, Gary (Paul Rudd) and she thinks she is better than everyone. Early in the film, she causes massive property damage while trying to catch a ghost and doesn’t see why she is considered a danger and should not be fighting undead spirits.

This is a classic 80s and 90s storyline for family adventure films. One member of the family is young but brilliant and special, much like Phoebe is, and they lash out (as kids do) and caused problems, which they themselves end up having to fix and by the end of the film, they are forgiven for everything and they are reminded about how special they are.

There’s a moment in the film that it feels like it will go against this – Callie and Greg clash with the rebellious teen and even call her selfish at one point, which I applaud greatly. I felt that this storyline needed a modern update and that the entitlement that is at display here from Phoebe would be rectified. But to my disappointment, the film backtracks and returns to form.

As the central storyline in ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ it makes the film feel so old and outdated. There’s a hefty dose of nostalgia here, especially with the care they take to ensure that the senior Ghostbusters have a good amount of screentime (and some gags that call back to the original 1984 film) that the film feels redundant. I have to agree with my friends when he said that this film is inoffensively bland. It does nothing new to the franchise and checks all its boxes to ensure that it hits all the right notes for family-friendly, mass market affair.

While I kept checking the time, to my surprise, the cinema around me was full of people enjoying themselves. They cheered when the old Ghostbusters showed up and they laughed when a gag comes through (especially if it somehow relates to the original group). The nostalgia is strong in this one but that’s what it seems to be. It’s a relic of a time when things were simpler, when stakes weren’t high, and life wasn’t so complicated. It’s a light-hearted movie with no real weight or substance. It does nothing new but appeals to nostalgia, which it does well. The people enjoyed it. But I’m not a sentimental person.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: The Dis-united States of America; a review of ‘Civil war’

No stranger to the genre of science fiction, novelist, screenwriter, and director Alex Garland has been imagining the dark side of humanity in extreme conditions. In his screenplays for ‘28 Days Later’ and ‘Sunshine’ as well as his second directorial outing ‘Annihilation’ his movies have always raised a mirror to humanity and showed it for its ugliness when the pressure starts to kick in.

While his latest film is a dystopian science fiction imagining of an America in the midst of the second civil war, some articles quote him as saying it will be his last directorial effort as he plans to concentrate solely on writing. Despite this, the film operates very much in the contemporary mode. There are no zombies here like in ‘28 Days Later’ or aliens like in ‘Annihilation’ or AI like in the excellent ‘Ex Machina.’ No, this film is set in a future where America is at war with itself, a third term president-turned-dictator is battling the military might of secessionist states. There is no hi-tech equipment here. This is just a prediction of things to come based on an artist’s interpretation of where the United States of America is going if it does not fix itself any time soon.

    Civil War40191 R

‘Civil War’ follows four journalists as they make the trip from a war-torn New York down to Washington DC where they hope to interview the President. The group is led by Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), a renowned war photojournalist, followed by the journalist Joel (Wagner Moura). They are joined by the senior journalist Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), a sort of mentor for the two. Rounding up the cast is Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), a young photojournalist who looks up to Lee as her “hero.”

    Civil War 001 R

    Civil War 015

The trip to the nation’s capital is wrought with danger and against her better judgment, Lee becomes a sort of mentor to the inexperienced Jessie. The weariness and jadedness that Dunst encapsulates into her portrayal of Lee Smith really sells the rich and vivid imagery that Garland adorns his film. ‘Civil War’ is wonderfully shot and the ways by which he imagines a ruined America – open air stadiums filled with graffiti, the highways filled with broken cars and families walking along the road moving their things with shopping carts, set pieces that look like universities used as a war zone – it’s such striking imagery because these are the same images used to depict wars in other countries with American soldiers coming in as heroes. In ‘Civil War,’ the tables have been turned. The majority of Hollywood movies have always positioned America as the heroes in any war story. Here, they are at war with themselves.

The film is extremely political yet, as some critics have pointed out, this is not some commentary on Trump or wokeism or any specific political issue in the United States now. Without any real backstory as to how this narrative has reached this point – that the film begins right at the zenith of the civil war – it’s a snapshot of how horrible things are going to be if the things that are tearing up the United States now isn’t fixed, this film looks more like a primer than a fictional depiction.

It’s an anti-war film even though it has long sequences of really riveting battle scenes. But none of it is glamorized or romanticized. It’s bloody. It’s ugly. People get hurt. People die. It’s merciless and there’s no joy in any of it. Regardless of how meticulously it is done. Through the eyes of Dunst, Spaeny, Moura, and Henderson, we see it how it really is – senseless and devastating.

But as journalists, they have to remain detached. They need to get the story so that they can get it out there so that the people can be moved to action. And that’s where the film finds its second layer because as Spaeny’s Jessie starts to find the means to detach, Dunst’s Lee Smith begins to show signs of the cracks splitting open, years of exposure to this sort of imagery tearing her up inside. It’s fantastic counterpoint performance for both actresses.

    Civil War39555 RC2

This is a brave and demanding film. It subverts years and years of Hollywood propaganda in depicting the United States as “the greatest country in the world.” It’s a fictional setting but it is pointed in the ways that it highlights all that is wrong in America today. Much like the journalists in the movie, we are being made to move, to act, to feel. If it’s true that Garland is done with directing movies, then it’s a powerful way to end his directing career. It’s a triumph in every aspect.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: ‘The First Omen’ starts strong with excellent use of horror imagery until its cliched finale

Setting itself up as the sequel to the 1976 horror classic ‘The Omen’ by Richard Donner, ‘The First Omen’ surprises by being more than just a franchise cash-grab. Director Arkasha Stevenson is not above using jump scares, but she never relies on it (I was counting and only counted three, and all of them were organic to the scene and not gratuitous at all). Instead, she layers her horror with intricate camera shots that takes full advantage of the mise-en-scene and context of the narrative. The horror is born out of understanding the sheer malevolence that is happening within the story and juxtaposes this with terrifying imagery to remind us that there are forces out there who will do anything to bind us to their will.

Set in Rome in 1971 during a large-scale protest and rally against the police, the government, and even the church, an American novitiate Margaret (Nell Tiger Free) goes to an orphanage run by Father Lawrence (Bill Nighy) and a cloister of nuns. Here, Margaret will serve to care for the young girls while awaiting to take her vows. The older nuns, led by Sister Silvia (Sonia Braga), are a dynamic group of women, who have lives before and after taking on the habit (which is a welcome change). Margaret is enticed by her roommate Luz (Maria Caballero) to go out and enjoy the night life so that she understands what it is she is sacrificing as Margaret has lived with nuns her whole life having been raised in an orphanage herself.

But nothing is right here in the orphanage. There is a young girl, Carlita, who draws strange pictures and is frequently punished and put into “the bad room” and has strange interactions with Sister Angelica (Ishtar Currie-Wilson), a nun who seems not all there in the head. Margaret takes to Carlita, as she reminds her of herself but when a priest from a different cloister, Father Brennan (Ralph Inneson) corners Margaret and tells her that there is a sect of priests and nuns who believe that the church is losing its power over the people and have conspired to bring the antichrist into the world as a means to bring the people closer to god, Margaret must find it within herself to battle her own demons and discover the truth behind the secrets hidden in the orphanage.

What Stevenson does well in setting up her world is that she takes the time for us to really get to know Margaret and how she feels about the world around her. While she is laying down the groundwork for the story, she finds the most horrifying means of showing us that the devil is just at the periphery and that for all its religious adornments, there is such a close link between good and evil. One cannot believe in God without believing in the devil and Stevenson wonderfully intersects all the religious paraphernalia and rituals within the film and subverts it and turns it into something insidious and scary.

The First Omen Candles First Look FINAL 1
Nell Tiger Free as Margaret in 20th Century Studios’ THE FIRST OMEN. Photo credit: Moris Puccio/20th Century Studios. © 2023 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

There are the usual tricks – using darkness and the silhouette of a nun’s habit hanging on the wall to create a scary moment or bring about a moment of tension – but it is in the way that Stevenson creates a narrative that allows Margaret to question what it is that she is seeing (a story point that is related to her own past) and the way that it twists and turns in her mind and how we are able to see it on screen.

The scariest things in ‘The First Omen’ are the things that the characters are imagining and seeing – a demonic hand coming out of a human body at the most inopportune moment is one of the most striking horrific images of the film – as the darkness and the evil of the conspiracy is closing in on Margaret.

    first omen dtrl2 4k r709f stills 240307.088961 R
Nell Tiger Free as Margaret in 20th Century Studios’ THE FIRST OMEN. Photo courtesy of 20th Century Studios. © 2024 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

And it is here that the film finds its strongest piece because Nell Tiger Free manages to keep it all together and give us a person we are interested in and invested in. She brings a certain everyman quality to Margaret that brings us to her side but when the film hits its third act and the film makes physical demands from her performance, she is way more than capable of delivering a fully fleshed out performance. As the conspiracy reaches full swing and she is caught into it, there’s a scene that is both physical and transformative and she does an excellent job at physicalizing it.

    THE FIRST OMEN TEASER POSTER

The first hour and a half of ‘The First Omen’ is actually terrific horror. It only loses its strength when it shifts from indie horror to a mainstream narrative where the main character must find a way to “defeat the beast.” It is a narrative trap that is often used by Hollywood to keep the protagonist active but in the face of what they are having to contend with in this story, it makes no sense for them to be so gung-ho. It becomes prosaic and loses its magic by the third act. Its finale undermines the first two acts that have so carefully created this world of horror amidst the backdrop of faith and revolution.

  • Why You Can’t Miss ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ – Insights from Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard

The eagerly anticipated ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘ is not just a movie; it’s an experience, according to Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard. With the Spengler family back in action, the film promises to deliver an unforgettable mix of nostalgia, humor, and spine-tingling adventure. Here’s why this chapter in the Ghostbusters saga is unmissable.

    A Return to Origins

Mckenna Grace, portraying the brilliant Phoebe Spengler, highlights the significant shift in scenery and scale in ‘Frozen Empire.’ “It’s in New York, it brings us back to where the Ghostbusters originated so that’s really special,” says Grace. “New villain, new storylines, new problems that at least Phoebe has never encountered. It’s bigger scale, more blockbuster, action, there’s a lot. It’s very fun.”

    The Ultimate Team-Up

Finn Wolfhard, stepping into the shoes of Trevor, Phoebe’s older brother, is thrilled about the on-screen collaboration between the new and original Ghostbusters. “This movie is incredibly fun because you have the original Ghostbusters teaming up with the new Ghostbusters,” says Wolfhard. “It’s hard to believe that we’re all in the same room together, working on the same scenes. It’s very surreal but super rewarding.” This unprecedented alliance forms the heart of the movie, blending the iconic humor and camaraderie of the original films with the vibrant energy of the new generation.

    A Chilling New Adversary

The stakes are higher than ever as our heroes face Garraka, a spectral force with the power to unleash a deadly frost upon the world. Grace describes Garraka as “a terrifying villain,” setting the tone for a movie that masterfully balances the thrill of the ghost hunt with the chill of a supernatural apocalypse.

Laughter in the Face of Danger

Despite the looming threat, ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘ stays true to its roots by weaving humor throughout its narrative. “There’s a genius in how the original films blended scares with comedy,” Wolfhard reflects, affirming that the new movie follows in these footsteps, ensuring that audiences are kept on the edge of their seats, chuckling all the while.

    A Legacy Continued

For both Grace and Wolfhard, being part of the Ghostbusters legacy is a dream come true. “It’s an honor to contribute to this saga,” Wolfhard shares, emphasizing the film’s deep respect for its predecessors and its aim to captivate die-hard fans and newcomers alike.
