  • Filippo Berio: His Signature. Our Promise

Since the mid-1800s, the Filippo Berio brand has become synonymous with Italian olive oil excellence thanks to modern production facilities, uncompromising quality standards, and a strong brand integrity. Its unique flavour has made it one of the leading brands in the world.

    Filippo Berio

If there was one thing for which Filippo Berio was particularly proud of it was the exceptional quality of his olive oils. He worked hard to ensure that each bottle was made from the best olives using ‘tried and true’ production methods.

In every deliciously rich bottle of Filippo Berio olive oil lies 150 years of skilled craftsmanship. We treat our heritage with great care, ensuring Filippo Berio’s signature today represents the same uncompromising quality that our founder intended.

Today, his stringent quality standards are still applied at every stage of the production process, which takes place in SALOV’s state-of-the-art production facility just outside Lucca, Italy.

    Filippo Berio 1

Filippo Berio’s highly-experienced tasters sample 6,000 olive oils each year, yet only 6% are actually selected to become Filippo Berio olive oil.

During the selection process, stages of analysis must be passed in order for an olive oil to be considered Extra Virgin.

    Filippo Berio 2

The very best and purest form of olive oil is extra virgin which is stored or bottled immediately after pressing, just as it is. To obtain this prestigious classification however, the olive oil must undergo a range of stringent tests to ensure that its acidity levels are below 0.8%. All oils above this limit are sent to a refinery and blended with extra virgin olive oils to add flavour, the resulting product is known as standard or pure olive oil .

Filippo Berio Olive Oil has become a staple ingredient in the kitchen that some of the country’s renowned chefs use it as an everyday cooking oil.

“What’s great about using Filippo Berio olive oil is that you get a longer shelf life with your pastries as compared to butter,” says Chef Angelo Comsti.

“Filippo Berio Extra Virgin olive oil, it’s really high quality, very flavorful and they’re experts in olive oils” says Chef Jackie Laudico.

Filippo Berio Oils are also certified Kosher and Halal.

Aside from high quality olive oils, Filippo Berio creates delicious Pestos. Pesto is an Italian sauce. The name ‘Pesto’ derives from the Italian verb, pestare, meaning to crush or grind. Available in the market are the classic pesto, sun-dried tomato pesto, and tomato and ricotta pesto.

Filippo Berio also has Balsamic Vinegar of Modena which is made from specially selected grapes and assures its origin in Modena, Italy which is known for its production of Balsamic Vinegar. Its unique flavor, which is a perfect complement to our fine Extra Virgin Olive Oil, is ideal for salad dressings, marinades, or even drizzled over grilled fish, meat, and vegetables.

    Filippo Berio Ecommerce

Filippo Berio is available in all major supermarkets nationwide and in e-commerce platforms like Lazada and Shopee.

  • Mekeni’s Tocino is Coming to The US Market

Another Mekeni food product will be available in the US market soon as Mekeni Food Corporation announced that they are bringing their well-loved tocino through Island Pacific Supermarket.

Mekeni President Prudencio Garcia said that this new development in their world-market journey is a testament to their commitment to uplift the lives of Filipinos and bring pride to the country.

Mekeni products available in the US

“This is another step for us to introduce our own Timplang Atin to the rest of the world. When we introduced our first batch of Mekeni-branded products to the US, we want Filipinos abroad and foreigners alike to have access to the world-class quality and taste we offer,” said Garcia.

Last January, Mekeni made their Kikiam and Fish Balls available on the West Coast also through its partnership with Island Pacific Supermarket, one of the area’s biggest Asian/Filipino supermarkets.

The products were widely accepted by the Filipino community on the West Coast. Stocks immediately ran low just a few days after the new products were announced by Island Pacific on their Facebook page.

“We received a lot of positive feedback from families, friends, and friends of friends in the US. Some even asked us to bring more Mekeni products, said Marilou Uy, Mekeni AVP for Export. This inspired Mekeni to speed up its efforts to bring its tocino to the US.

“This is a major feat for a brand like Mekeni that started as a backyard business of a simple family. This milestone is a celebration of the efforts of the whole Mekeni family through the years,” Garcia said.

Before the US, Mekeni exported food products to international markets such as Dubai, Bahrain, Brunei, Qatar, Australia, Canada, and the UK. It is also the first company accredited by the Japanese government to export cooked products to the country.

For over 30 years, it has been known for its world-class manufacturing capabilities. Mekeni is the first in Asia and the second in the world to receive the certificate of compliance with ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System standard. In 2012 and 2013, Mekeni received the Century International Quality ERA Award (Gold Category) in Switzerland and The International Arch of Europe Platinum Award in Germany, respectively, which further cemented its commitment to food safety and quality.

“Fogo de Chão is exactly what our business seeks out when looking for franchise partners,” said Bill Stelton, Chairman and CEO of The Bistro Group. “The company’s upscale and internationally-renowned dining concept, paired with its passion for Southern Brazilian hospitality and the culinary art of churrasco makes them an invaluable addition to our portfolio.”

  • Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Café Kitsuné’s First Manila Store

Nine years after opening its first café in Tokyo, Café Kitsuné is now finally coming to the Philippines.

Café Kitsuné Manila is expected to officially open in July 2022 at The Podium in Ortigas Center in Mandaluyong City. Further details will be made available at a later date. But expect Café Kitsuné’s Philippine location to have its beloved signature Paris-meets-Tokyo atmosphere and aesthetic. Café Kitsuné Manila, like all of its cafés around the world, is a modernist reinterpretation of the classic Parisian café and wine bar.

Created in 2013, Café Kitsuné has grown to a network of 20 cafés across the world including Tokyo, Paris, Seoul, New York City, Beijing, and Vancouver, achieving cult status amongst specialty coffee lovers around the world. In 2019, Café Kitsuné has also extended its activities to new business lines, adding roasteries, bars, and restaurants to its range.

The ethos of Café Kitsuné echoes this. Modern and urban, with a unique savoir-faire. It offers a warm, sensory dining experience, whether for coffee, afternoon tea, night cocktails, or lunch and dinner among friends. It opened its first café in Tokyo in the Aoyama neighborhood and has since opened other locations in other highly-coveted metropolitan cities such as Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, New York, Shanghai, Jakarta, and Bangkok. Each location maintains its signature modern Parisian café and wine bar look and fee. Yet it also imbibes the local spirit of its iconic global locations.

Café Kitsuné has since become a cult favorite among the locals of its many locations and travelers, and creative coffee connoisseurs. Every Café Kitsuné location is chic and convivial. It welcomes visitors of all ages throughout the day, every day.

The highlight of any visit to Café Kitsuné is its high-quality coffee. Known for being full-bodied and flavorsome, Café Kitsuné cultivates its single-origin coffee beans in Brazil and Guatemala, and are roasted with the utmost care. This makes for a perfect cup of espresso, cappuccino, cold brew, or nitro—smooth and syrupy, with hints of cherry and chocolate. And each cup is prepared by a talented team of passionate baristas who understand the art of coffee making.

Menus in other locations are executed by local chefs who consider their location’s signature flavors without sacrificing the taste fans of Café Kitsuné look for.

Menu items Filipino guests can expect at Café Kitsuné Manila include many favorites, such as its signature burger, styled as a beef teriyaki tartare with bacon, fried egg, and comté; and the croque-monsieur with tuna, lemongrass, and ginger, and the café’s specialty bechamel sauce. Customers can expect a wealth of flavors with the café’s dessert menu, from mochi made with seasonal fruits to a carpaccio served with Sichuan pepper and Thai basilic syrup. Café Kitsuné’s cocktails are also a favorite among regulars, and its emphasis on an understated yet refreshing balance of flavors is expected to carry over in the Manila location.

Manila customers can also expect Café Kitsuné to carry its collection of accessories and tableware.

  • Rumba: The Newest Mediterranean Restaurant in Makati That Will Make Your Tastebuds Dance

Located at The Shops at Ayala Triangle Gardens, The Bistro Group’s Rumba is now open to tickle your tastebuds. It is helmed by Chef Alfredo Rodriguez Sangrador who has been living in the Philippines for 8 years now and is the Head Chef of the Bistronomia group with restaurants like Las Flores, Rambla, Tomatito, and BCN by Las Flores.

The flavors were inspired by countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea where guests can expect a taste of Spanish, Italian, Greek, and a bit of French. Upon entrance, you’ll notice the rich patchwork of textures ranging from white floral blooms to a compelling wood ceiling and furniture accents in colors that carry the characteristics of the Mediterranean landscape. Definitely a perfect date place or if you’re grabbing a bite with your colleagues.

Rumba focuses on a cooking method using a charcoal oven which infuses smoky flavors into the chef’s specialty dishes. The paella is cooked to perfection using a cast-iron casserole and is placed inside the Mibrasa charcoal oven using 100% charcoal imported from Spain. “We don’t call our charcoal rice, paella, because we don’t use a paellera,” Chef Alfredo explains. “90% of our dishes are cooked in the said oven including French-style free-range chicken, local squid (lumot), lamb chops, duck confit, octopus, shrimp, cheeses, and the mouth-watering cochinillo or suckling pig.

An open charcoal grill, meanwhile, sizzles with other fares such as salmon, tomahawk steak, and tenderloin. There is also a pasta section with choices such as vongole, carbonara, and lobster pasta, along with risottos in choices of seafood or foie.

Chef Alfredo brings his culinary expertise to other Mediterranean favorites such as hummus, lamb, and chicken gyros. He also gives a nod to his Spanish heritage with out-of-the-ordinary takes on traditional food, with croquettas, scallop ceviche, tuna and scallop empanadilla, Spanish cod omelette, and gambas that are not the typical style. The open kitchen provides an inviting feel and connection between the guests and the chefs.

“Jollibee always aims to spread joy to our customers, whether for dine-in, take out, drive-thru, or delivery. We continuously innovate our services to deliver a levelled-up customer experience,” said Jollibee Philippines President Ferns Yu, Jr. “We are piloting new innovations and technology in select stores, and are excited to roll them out to more branches in the future.”

K Dual Lane Drive Thru 1

These innovations complement the company’s signature Alagang Jollibee brand of service. “We’re very proud of our store teams’ trademark warm and joyful service—that’s what sets our teams apart in the fast-food industry. These new features contribute to an even better level of customer convenience, and increased efficiency for our operations as well,” Yu added.

Here are the store innovations to check out at select Jollibee stores:

Jollibots. First on the list is the viral Jollibots which netizens spotted months before in Jollibee’s SM Aura branch in Bonifacio Global City during the pilot stage.  Dining robotics were once considered futuristic, but the Jollibots have now started to serve and delight dine-in customers at Jollibee SM Aura, Taguig and Jollibee Glorietta, Makati. Soon, they’ll be present at Jollibee SM Seaside Cebu as well.

    A Jollibots
Jollibots conveniently dispatch food to customers’ tables, helping out the store team especially during peak hours. These are present in Jollibee SM Aura, Taguig and Jollibee Glorietta, Makati, and soon in Jollibee SM Seaside Cebu.

The Jollibots may be considered as the store team’s on-ground assistants, ready to extend a helping hand in dispatching orders straight to customers’ tables — allowing the crew to focus on other important tasks or attend to special requests of customers especially during peak hours.

“With the Jollibots, our store teams in select stores are experiencing the benefits of serving their customers even more efficiently. While these Jollibots are welcome additions, we have maintained and will continue to keep the same number of crew in these branches as they remain integral to our day-to-day operations and in delivering our Alagang Jollibee brand of service,” Yu shared.

    D Smart Lockers
Jollibee introduced Smart Lockers where customers and aggregator riders can pick up orders safely with zero wait time. These can be found in Jollibee Angono Bayan, Rizal, Jollibee P. Tuazon, Quezon City, and Jollibee Northbay Boulevard, Navotas.

Smart Lockers. Waiting to pick up food orders will soon become a thing of the past, thanks to the new smart lockers. Designed to also complement the convenient Order & Pick up feature of the Jollibee App, this makes the customer’s journey even more seamless and hassle free. Jollibee customers on-the-go can conveniently place their orders via the Jollibee App, then wait for the store to confirm their transaction and inform them of the smart locker pick up process. Once in the store, customers can go directly to the smart locker, key in their order number, and the corresponding locker will automatically open. Orders are guaranteed safe and secure, and there’s zero wait time as well.  Check out the Smart Lockers at Jollibee Angono Bayan, Rizal, Jollibee P. Tuazon, Quezon City, and Jollibee Northbay Boulevard, Navotas.

    H Riders Area 2
Whether it’s peak hour or not, the Rider’s Area in Jollibee GMA Cavite ensures that riders are given a safe and convenient place where they can get customer orders.

Rider’s Area. Where to wait and sit while waiting to pick up your customers’ orders in a jampacked Jollibee store? Riders of aggregator partners servicing GMA Cavite will worry no more as Jollibee’s branch in the said city has a new Rider’s Area—a dedicated and safe waiting and pick-up area where partner riders can rest comfortably as they wait for the orders of their customers. With this, crowding is avoided inside the store especially during peak hours, ensuring the safety of partner riders and customers alike.

    E Al Fresco
Customers can enjoy their meals in an open-air setting Jollibee GMA Cavite’s new and improved al fresco dining area.

Al Fresco Dining. With more people continuing to take extra safety precautions especially when dining out with their family and friends, Jollibee will soon be allotting more floor space for an Al fresco area.  The newest and levelled up al fresco dining area—adorned with nice murals and plants—are already welcoming customers at Jollibee GMA Cavite.

Jollibee president Ferns Yu shares that eating at Jollibee has always been associated with great bonding times in a place where you can be yourself and just feel at home. “So regardless of one’s new dining preference in this new normal, they will be able to continue enjoying the same treasured Jollibee experience over their favorite langhap-sarap meals.”

    J Self Order Kiosk
Self-Order Kiosks, which are available in 129 stores nationwide, allow customers to order their langhap-sarap favorites in 3 easy steps – order, pay, and claim!

Self-Order Kiosks (SOKs). Jollibee first piloted the self-order kiosks or SOKs back in 2018 to provide a faster and more efficient ordering process in stores. Now, more than 300 SOK units are present at 129 Jollibee stores nationwide. With a huge touchscreen menu board, choosing what to eat just became easier. Customers can go cashless and use their debit or credit cards to pay using the SOK terminal, or they can opt to pay cash at the counter. With the SOKs, Jollibee favorites can be enjoyed in just three easy steps – order, pay, and claim!

    K Dual Lane Drive Thru
The Dual Lane Drive-Thru in Jollibee Petron SLEX allows the store to serve more customers and cuts down turnaround time.

Dual-lane Drive-Thru. Jollibee also improves the drive-thru experience with dual lanes, sensors, and food conveyor belts, increasing the store’s drive-thru capacity, shortening the turnaround time for customers, and making dispatching food faster and fuss-free. The Dual-Lane Drive-Thru is present at Jollibee Petron SLEX, Laguna and will soon be experienced by customers at Jollibee Shell SLEX, Laguna. Meanwhile, food conveyor belts are operational and have been making order dispatch even faster at Petron SLEX, Shell C5 Heritage, Taguig, and Ayala Center Cebu branches.

Jon Villanueva, the Vice President of Restaurant Systems of Jollibee, hopes that these new innovations will help customers have an even more enjoyable experience whether they prefer to have their Jollibee favorites in store, at home, or even on the road.

“We’re very excited about these cutting-edge innovations in our stores, some of which are firsts in the local fast-food industry. The future of Joy is here, and we continue to be committed to making our customers’ Alagang Jollibee experience even better as we roll these out in more stores nationwide,” he said.

  • Family Recipes Inspire Tinapayan Festival to Recreate Favorite Desserts for its Customers

Over the past years, it has been known that Filipinos not only enjoy consuming food but are also avid chefs and bakers when it comes to cooking for their loved ones Tinapayan Festival, a local bakeshop in Manila offering soft and sweet baked products for over 40 years, is no stranger to that.

    Adelaidas Torte
Tinapayan Festival’s Adelaida’s Torte is a tribute to its founder Lucito ‘Chito’ Chavez’ late mother, Adelaida “Diday” Chavez.

While the bakeshop’s patrons come back for its bestsellers like ensaimada, cheese rolls, eclairs, napoleones, and its slew of over 200 baked products, nothing stops them from sharing and recreating family recipes so that more Filipinos can enjoy delectable treats made from the heart.

“It was always a dream of ours to share what we have not only in the knowledge and skills in baking but as well as the family recipes we have grown to love. Our customers are very dear to us and our growth, so it is just right to share products that are inspired by our own family recipes and memories,” shares Lucito ‘Chito’ Chavez, Founder and General Manager of Tinapayan Festival.

    Fit for a Queen

In 2020, Tinapayan Festival offered for the first time its bestselling Queen’s Chocolate Cake, which was launched at a time when Mother’s Day was just around the corner. It is made with the finest Couverture chocolate and the highest quality cream. The team behind Tinapayan Festival answered a growing need for celebratory cakes during Mother’s Day when the Philippines underwent its first lockdown back in 2020.

    Queens Chocolate Cake
    Queen’s Chocolate Cake

“When most of the local bakeries across Manila closed shop in 2020, we had to stay open to serve the community in need. We received a lot of inquiries for special cakes and thought why not create a premium chocolate cake befitting a queen for our deserving mothers. Using premium chocolate depicts how special our mothers are for us and we knew that our customers would love it, too,” says Potenciano Clarito Chavez, Operations Manager of Tinapayan Festival.

Aside from it being created in honor of Queen Elizabeth, this premium chocolate cake was also made in honor of the hard work, commitment, and love the family had for Maribel “Belen” C. Chavez, one of the co-founders of Tinapayan Festival and the wife of Chito.

    Celebrating Fond Memories

It’s not enough to just celebrate with good food. Oftentimes in Filipino culture, celebrating a small or big win, a birthday, anniversary, or anything else for that matter entails having a great dessert to top of a joyous occasion. This month, Tinapayan Festival launches its Adelaida’s Torte, its special torte made of meringue with chopped nuts, filled with chocolate ganache using premium quality couverture chocolate, butter icing, and caramel, and topped off with rich butter icing made specifically for the dessert.

Inspired and a tribute to the founder’s late mother, Adelaida “Diday” B. Chavez, who loved planting cacao beans that were later then made into local Batangas tablea the family gave out as gifts to friends and relatives back in the day. It was just recently when the Chavez family decided to create a chocolate torte taking inspiration from Nanay Diday’s love for chocolate.

    Nothing beats family recipes

Meals are much more special when based on recipes that have been passed down by ancestors. The legacy they leave behind remains in delectable treats and baked goods that leave the heart and tummy happy.

    Nanay Didays Polvoron
    Nanay Diday’s Special Polvoron

This month, Tinapayan Festival revives its special polvoron now dubbed, Nanay Diday’s Special Polvoron, which was based on Nanay Diday’s homemade polvoron recipe and features full cream powder, which complements all the other ingredients and ensures that each flavor is tasted by consumers.

Nanay Diday was known back in the 60s for molding polvoron using her hulma purchased in Escolta. This specific hulma was used by her family up until the late 80s and was kept as a reminder for the family for all the years Nanay Diday gave to creating handmade polvoron that she served not only to her family but to close friends as well. This time around, the bakeshop has improved on the traditional family recipe to introduce this special polvoron.

    Supporting Local Farmers

Planting has been one of Nanay Diday’s hobbies in the past. One staple agricultural product she time and time again planted and used for her recipes was the all-time Filipino favorite, ube.

    Ube Loaf
    Ube Loaf

Growing up exposed to ube being incorporated and cooked as a staple dessert at home, Chito was inspired in the early 2000s to create and incorporate this agricultural crop into their soft and sweet breads at Tinapayan Festival. Two of the products they created inspired by Nanay Diday’s love for ube are Tinapayan Festival’s Ube Loaf and Ube Twirl.

The Ube Loaf is the bakeshop’s twist to the soft and moist bread with real ube halaya, low protein flour, eggs, milk, and refined sugar. Meanwhile, the Ube Twirl features real ube halaya filling, perfect for those on-the-go and want something that’s ready and easy to eat any time of the day.
