On the third weekend of August, from August 19 to 21, The Peninsula Manila welcomes back MaArte, the elegant fundraising bazaar that benefits the Museum Foundation of the Philippines. The foundation’s mission is to raise funds and awareness for the National Museum of the Philippines and its network.
MaArte had its beginnings in February 2009 as a complementary event to HABI, The Second ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium, a four-day international conference held in Manila. As the conference’s Market Encounter, it allowed delegates the opportunity to appreciate and acquire Philippine textiles and jewelry.
Since then, MaArte has grown in scope and has undergone several iterations in various venues. In 2017, it found a new home in The Peninsula Manila and has since been rebranded as MaArte at The Pen.
To date, MaArte at The Pen is a much-awaited event that celebrates Filipino craftsmanship. After two years of the COVID pandemic, the 2022 edition will bring back previous participants who offer a varied array of thoughtfully-made merchandise while introducing elements that signal the event’s emergence into a new normal.
The overarching theme of MaArte at The Pen 2022 is to celebrate the Filipino creative soul.
MaArte at The Pen 2022 will recognize not just traditional Filipino craft and design but also bring to the fore contemporary Philippine design in the fields of fashion, furniture, and accessories.
Philippine Art Events Inc., the group that owns and operates Art Fair Philippines and Art in the Park will run MaArte at The Pen 2022. The event is supported by Major Sponsors Ayala Land Premier and BPI.
“We are glad to support an event that promotes Filipino craftsmanship and design, and at the same time provides our clients with special experiences and empowering financial solutions,” said Jenelyn Z. Lacerna, BPI SVP and Unsecured Lending and Cards, Product and Sales Head.
A Special Exhibit: SLIM at The Lobby
Salvacion Lim Higgins, known by the acronym Slim, was a fashion designer whose career began in post-World War II Manila, from 1947 until her passing in 1990. The first decade of her career is considered a golden era in Philippine fashion. She was known for creating some of the most avant-garde silhouettes of her time, both for evening gowns and ternos. Considered a master in her techniques of draping and embellishment, her beautiful creations have been the subject of a retrospective at the National Museum of the Philippines in 2009. In June of this year, the Philippine government recognized her with the distinction of National Artist for Fashion Design.
MaArte at The Pen puts together a vignette of ensembles by Slim featuring native influences such as jusi, cutwork embroidery, and raffia trimming. The dresses date from 1952 to the early 1980s and have been loaned from the archives of Slim’s Fashion & Arts School. Nine of her fabulous creations will be on view at The Lobby from August 15 to 27, 2022.
Painter Mark Lewis Higgins, the late designer’s son who serves as the current Director of Slim’s Fashion & Arts School, will curate this special exhibit.
PHxMaArte, a section on contemporary fashion
For 2022, MaArte at The Pen will bring contemporary Philippine fashion to the forefront.
Neil Felipp
To spotlight the breadth of Filipino fashion design, this year’s bazaar works together with the PHx Fashion Group to introduce PHxMaArte, a section that will acquaint MaArte visitors with the next generation of Filipino designers. They trumpet unconventional lines and global mindsets. Among those debuting new collections in this section are BAGASÁO, NeilFelipp, and Kelvin Morales, labels coming off stints at Tokyo Fashion Week. Jude Macasinag flies in Manifesto, recently presented for his bachelor graduation collection at the Institut Francais de la Mode in Paris.
The PHx Fashion Group also worked in consultation with fashion schools SoFA Design Institute and iAcademy, as well as the fashion design department of the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde to feature three graduates as part of the PHxMaArte selection.
Apparel and Fashion Accessories
MaArte takes pride in the role it has played in propelling into the mainstream apparel brands that have advocated the use of traditional Filipino textiles. Incorporating indigenous embroidery patterns and techniques into their merchandise are the hallmarks of MaArte at The Pen pioneers, brands like Filip+Inna and Good Luck Humans. This year’s MaArte brings back these beloved labels, along with, among others, Rurungan Collective, WYC Wear Your Culture, Two Chic, and Creative Definitions + Lakat Sustainables.
The Heirloom and the Current in Home Accessories, Furniture, and Jewelry Design
The choices for MaArte visitors will suit a range of inclinations. To highlight our rich traditions, respected purveyors of Philippine antiques, tribal art, and maps Unang Panahon, Gallery Deus, Leon Gallery, and Gallery of Prints will debut choice pieces in their first-ever MaArte appearances.
Natalya Lagdameo
Likewise, MaArte at The Pen’s selection of jewelry from, among others, Riqueza, Micki Olaguer, Tim Tam Ong, and Natalya Lagdameo, will run from pre-colonial gold trinkets to vintage estate jewelry to accessories in wood, bone, and brass for casual everyday wear.
Ito Kish
Also marking his first time at MaArte is Ito Kish. The home accessories and furniture carried by his eponymous shop reflect an enduring passion for design. Joining him are MaArte stalwarts Beyond Borders, DOMESTICITY – TILIA, and the non-profit Gifts and Graces.
To add more depth to the home section, MaArte organizers consulted architect, furniture designer, and former Bluprint magazine editor Tina Bonoan. Her lineup includes Azcor Lighting Systems,Touch of Craft, and HOLICOW, all found at the 6th floor.
Traditional Textiles
Harking back to its very first bazaar, fabric collections that highlight native Filipino traditions always have a place at the event. This year, some of the brands featuring them are Balay ni Atong and WVN Living, plus Ifugao-based community weaver Marlon Martin.

Have you found your one true pairing? More often than not, these things are subtly introduced into our lives but leave quite the impact once it’s all been said and done. Like, ice cream on a hot summer day, popcorn and movies, bacon and eggs, a burger with fries on the side, and the forever table staple in life events, foodpanda and Coke!
foodpanda is one to thank for opening the gates to making amazing eats and elevated dining experiences more accessible while Coke is what makes bonds greater and moments better. Together? These two are a match made in heaven!
The best of all? foodpanda and Coke are collaborating to usher in a new generation of traditions in their mission to promote strengthened bonds and togetherness. And as part of this joint effort, foodpanda is giving foodies the power to mix and match until they find their “one true pairing.”
Whether they’re in the mood for a chicken fix, a plate of pizza and pasta, or a deep dive into the flavors of Asia, they can now make it #BetterWithCoke anywhere and anytime. It’s a guaranteed treat for all, lifestyle influencers included!
For Sef Balmocena, he finds that his favorite meals from foodpanda are “not complete without taking a sip of Coke.”
Then there’s Yael Arevalo, who says, “Everytime na mag-lulunch kami ng friends ko, o-order kami sa foodpanda, at syempre, hinding-hindi nawawala ang Coke!”
While trends may come and go, what stays true is the taste, now linked to a memory, a time, a person, or a place. Similar to how it played a part in Camille Alipio-Luzande’s formative years, which she believes lets them taste the feeling and bring to life the idea that “drinking Coke alone or together is a simple pleasure that makes everyday moments more special. Which is better now than ever since I can order through foodpanda!”
Yet, beyond just a perfect meal partner, Patricia Dauz finds Coke as a symbol. “Strengthening bonds between family, friends and even strangers.” She shares.
Understandably, nothing beats an absolute classic, and to Aubrey Lim there’s only one definitive mealtime experience she would keep coming back to over and over again. “It’s eating my favorite burger from foodpanda under the skies!” She said.
And if you’re in a rebellious mood, why not take a page off of Aubrey’s go-to and embark on a gastronomic trip for your next fave combo through foodpanda? The place where the digital and physical collide to bring a wide array of mouth-watering and thirst-quenching virtual selections into real-world satisfaction for utmost convenience and money-saving promo deals!
Fortunately, foodpanda is now combo-ready for mixing and matching with its current partnership with Coke to make cherishing mealtimes even more accessible. As part of this joint effort, foodpanda is launching deals nationwide to make mealtimes #BetterWithCoke, allowing users to save while pairing their chosen lunch or dinner feast with the beverage through notable-merchant partners in order to create their ultimate dream combo.
LUNCH:
Use the code, COKELUNCH to get ₱80 off from 11 AM to 3PM, with a minimum spend of ₱500 at select restaurants nationwide

Seoul Vibe is about the baby-drivers of Sanggye-dong who dreamed of the American dream during the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Due to an external threat by prosecutor Ahn, the drivers are forced to create slush funds for Myeong-dong’s big-hand “Ms. Kang” to figure out her dirty secret. As a result, they become rising stars in the industry. The Sanggye-dong friends, who were able to do everything with a “pony pick-up truck,” are now faced in severe danger. After facing the crisis, they wake up and upgrade “Pony+Sonata+Grandeur (local korean cars of the time)” to the level of SUPREME, defeating all the great evils of the time and leaving Korea to realize the American dream.
Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, recently launched the #ShareTheConfidence campaign in partnership with Whisper and World Vision, to educate Filipinos on the importance of menstrual hygiene management. This initiative is part of Shopee Bayanihan, the company’s umbrella CSR arm that seeks to provide support for communities in need through partnerships with various humanitarian organizations.
As part of the campaign, Whisper pledged to match and donate sanitary products for every Whisper product sold on Shopee from May 28 to June 30. Almost 130,000 young women from World Vision’s partner communities all over the Philippines benefitted from the initiative and received sanitary products through the delivery efforts of Shopee Xpress, Shopee’s logistics arm. Apart from raising awareness on proper menstrual hygiene management, the #ShareTheConfidence campaign also aimed to break the stigma around menstrual health and address the issue of period poverty in the Philippines.
Last July 22, Shopee and its partners culminated the #ShareTheConfidence campaign with an on-site event in Laurel, Batangas to turn over Whisper sanitary pads to over 85,000 beneficiaries within the area.
Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, shared “Everything we do at Shopee goes back to our main mission of serving the underserved through our technology. We are humbled to partner with Whisper and World Vision to empower Filipinas in need. We look forward to maximizing our platform to deliver even more meaningful initiatives that will benefit communities all over the Philippines.”
With Shopee Bayanihan, Shopee furthers its objective to make e-commerce for everyone by helping communities benefit from the power of digital transformation wherever they are in the Philippines.

Bullet Train brings together seven characters, all with connected, conflicting, and at times, confusing objectives. “Fate brings these people onto this train, and their energies combine in the craziest, most gonzo way possible,” says producer Kelly McCormick.

The Twins, Tangerine (Taylor-Johnson) and Lemon (Henry), aren’t actually twins. (No kiddin’.) In fact, though they are seemingly a disparate pair, they are lifelong brothers in arms. Tangerine is a Savile Row-suited killer with slicked back hair and flashy gold jewelry – not exactly subtle. Lemon, meanwhile, possesses a guileless demeanor and moral compass that he has honed entirely from the lessons from “Thomas the Tank Engine” – but he is nevertheless just as talented a hitman as his twin.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Brian Tyree Henry (Courtesy of Columbia Pictures)
Taylor-Johnson and Henry say that their offscreen chemistry drove the onscreen relationship (and vice versa). “Tangerine and Lemon go hand in hand and really rely on each other,” says Taylor-Johnson. “There’s a love between them, a deeply rooted partnership that goes back years and years. That kind of bond needs to be supported by an instant connection and chemistry for us both, and Brian brought the energy, fire, and passion every day. I fed off of his energy, bounced off of his enthusiasm and his charisma. He’s one of the best actors around, without a doubt.”
Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Brian Tyree Henry (Courtesy of Columbia Pictures)
Henry, well-known for his roles in The Eternals and Atlanta, says he was able to tap into the fun odd-couple nature of their characters’ pairing. “Lemon is incredibly genuine. He is the most genuine, childlike, joyous psychopath you’ll ever meet in your life,” Henry says. “He enters a room and you can’t miss him, but at the same time, he has a real ease about him. That’s why pairing him with Aaron’s Tangerine is so perfect. Tangerine is crazy, and there’s a finesse that Aaron has when he steps into the role. He’s that fine wine of sociopaths. The two of us together is so eclectic and fun and we’re just the oddest pairing, but at the same time, it works so well.”
