  • Naomi Ackie Stuns in “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody”

BAFTA-winning British actress Naomi Ackie (Netflix’s End of the F*cking World, Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker plays the title character in Columbia Pictures’ Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody  (in Philippine cinemas starting Sunday, January 8).

Watch the film’s latest trailer below.

“I don’t even know how to describe it – Whitney has just always been there, always so present in my life,” Naomi Ackie says. “Every wedding, every funeral, every christening, birthday, karaoke, when I’m on my own, when I’m with friends. I can’t even remember the first time I listened to her music – that’s not even part of the conversation. She’s just always present.”

Naomi Ackie in TRISTAR pictures I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY

Because of that, when Ackie got the call inviting her to audition, she says, she was overwhelmed by the idea of playing the icon – until everything fell into place. “I was immediately intimidated by even attempting to try it. It was just terrifying. Every time I had another round of auditions and it got closer, it still felt strange,” she says. “And then, for the final audition – it was Halloween, I was in full costume as Whitney, with the suit and the hair, singing ‘I Will Always Love You,’ and something just clicked. I suddenly understood – I could tell this story.”

    Naomi Ackie

The thing that clicked for Ackie is a stripping away of the legend and a focus on who Houston was as a performer. “She just wanted to sing,” says Ackie. “I understand that, because I have the same thing – with acting. It doesn’t get much more complicated than that. I also saw that she could be a goofball and be very silly, like me, and combine that with a real respect for her craft and a technical ability, which is always my goal, too.”

For Ackie, playing Whitney Houston was something of a life-changing event. “There was a power in playing Whitney that I didn’t anticipate,” she says. “I’m not a take-it-home-with-you kind of actor. Between ‘action’ and ‘cut,’ I’m all feelings, and I leave it at the door. But with Whitney, it was something different. I stepped into my own power in a way that I hadn’t been asked to do before. I wasn’t just playing Whitney Houston anymore.”

  • CCP’s Himig Himbing Showcases Local Lullabies through Music Videos

Taking care of children can be very challenging to parents or babysitters, especially when lulling them to sleep.  At times, the efforts become increasingly difficult when the kid cries or even throws a tantrum that makes one wonder when it would ever end.  Talking to them could be a challenge, but singing to them might probably be just the solution.

Crooning “Rock-A-Bye-Baby”, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” or any popular English nursery rhyme to pacify an infant is one thing, but how about singing a lullaby in a Tagalog, Visayan or Mindanaoan language?  It was a calming experience for audiences to hear such lullabies at the recent launch of Himig Himbing: Mga Heleng Atin (CCP Indigenous Lullabies) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

A project of the CCP Arts Education Department through its Audience Development Division, Himig Himbing featured eight music videos of lullabies from different regions of the country.  The project is aimed at reintroducing the Philippine indigenous lullabies to contemporary audiences and developing nurturers that are grounded in Philippine songs and heles.

In realizing Himig Himbing, eight music videos of eight lullabies from the regions were developed based on the research of ethnomusicologist Sol Trinidad and arranged by musical director Krina Cayabyab.  Eight filmmakers, namely Sigrid Bernardo, Alvin Yapan, Carla Ocampo, Teng Mangansakan, Milo Tolentino, Mes De Guzman, Thop Nazareno, and Law Fajardo created their respective film interpretations of the featured lullabies.

The following videos are “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan” (a Tagalog lullaby composed by National Artist for Music Lucio San Pedro with lyrics by National Artist for Music and Literature Levi Celerio), “Katurog na, Nonoy” (a Bicolano lullaby sung by one whom a little boy looks for to put him to sleep), “Wiyawi” (a traditional Kalinga lullaby often sung by caretakers, usually Cordilleran fathers), “Aba-aba” (a lullaby indigenous to Southern Mindanao, particularly sung by the indigenous group Subanon), “Hele” (a lullaby from a 1986 field recording of Dr. Elena Mirano taken in San Mateo, Rizal), “Dungdungwen Kanto” (translated as I Will Love You, the first line of an Ilocano wedding song also often sung as a children’s lullaby), “Tingkatulog” (translated as ‘Sleeping Time’, a folk lullaby from the area of Bohol), and “Ili, Ili, Tulog Anay” (translated as ‘Little One, Go to Sleep’, a Visayan lullaby sung by a caretaker to a child and mentions a mother who is out buying bread).

CCP Board Trustee and Vice Chair Michelle Nikki Junia, who initiated the idea in the form of a lullaby, explains how both adults and children can benefit from this unique endeavor.

“We want to make sure that we have good research,” Junia elucidates.  “I requested to take a look at unpopular lullabies, not just the ‘Bahay Kubo’ (Nipa Hut) version, and dig deeper for a representation from various regions as we believe the country is very rich in traditions.  We have to embrace and make that known.”  She is also impressed with the production of the eight videos, which were integrated in the folk tales, putting an added value to the lullabies as well.  “That’s the beauty of it,” she says of the flicks.  “They were very creatively done and in high quality.”

Being an early childhood music educator, Junia observes that there is scarcity in terms of Filipino lullabies in her classes.  “Most of the lullabies Filipino music teachers would use as available resources are western repertoire, she notices.  “There are more western lullabies while traditional Filipino lullabies are very few.  I see that the importance for the mothers, the elders, the caregivers is to be aware and to share our traditional lullabies, especially that we are giving value to developing in the young our own language.  We are Filipinos, but sadly, the younger generation now are more eloquent in speaking English than in our own language.”

Regarding Filipino traditions, Junia does not want them to die.  “They have to be present up to this time and they need to be reborn.  That’s why the way Himig Himbing was arranged, and the way the music videos were produced somehow integrated the technology for it to be relevant to the young parents at this time,” she continues.  “Probably due to disconnection or lack of interest, they cannot relate to the way it sounds because it has a different ‘taste’.”

Junia also feels that something must be done in order to find a middle ground to reach out to the young parents, and ensure that Filipino traditional lullabies will stay, progress, and be made aware to the public.  “The importance of these oral traditions through lullabies is that the exposure of the infants at a very young age already gives them an idea of their identity,” she adds.  “We know that most of the time, when we have social events with other nationalities, there is some level of envy, because they really know who they are.  But the Filipinos, because many foreign countries have colonized us, there is a confusion of who we really are.  We have to accept this problem.”

Another purpose of CCP for pursuing Himig Himbing is to promote musical awareness, especially for the young ones in terms of its effect on brain development.  “There have been a lot of studies that show that music has positive effects on brain stimulation, even before they are born.  That’s why I encourage the moms to already listen and sing to lullabies during pregnancy,” Junia avers.  “It’s because the vibration of the voice resonates down to the unborn child through the umbilical cord.  That’s why it is amazing that when the baby comes out into the real world, and when you play the lullabies you have been listening or singing to when you were pregnant, the babies would respond to it.  It’s because they already sense familiarity with what they heard.  And this is very important in stimulation, because the way young children would learn successfully in the different stages of their development.  All areas of the brain need to be stimulated.  Music is actually more attractive to children because it has melody, it has beat, it has rhythm, as compared to just merely talking or speaking, this is how the young ones get attracted to it.  This is a step for speech development,” she quips.

Junia feels that it is very important that CCP is aware of the situation, of how music and the arts can help in academic learning or preparedness later on.  “Since the ear is the closest sensory organ to the brain responsible for distributing information to the important regions of the brain, it therefore needs to be stimulated.  It makes sense, the first sensory organ developed in an unborn baby are the ears, so it’s really auditory,” she muses.

“As the ear is the first one to be developed and the last one to shut down, one would know how important it is, bridging the information, the knowledge grasped from the outside, from the environment being absorbed by the brain through music,” she enthuses.  “The lullaby is a soothing form of music suitable for infants, for very young children.  There is a bit of trauma when the unborn baby comes out of the womb.  And that trauma can be helped by music because of its soothing effect.  The music itself gives comfort to the inner, biological or physiological needs of the baby.”

Junia clarifies that the soothing outcome reduces anxiety as well.  “It helps in reconnecting, due to the trauma upon birth and the baby reconnects.  The baby needs security, comfort, and knows the ways of the mother.”

She sees the better way to communicate with babies is through singing lullabies, reading a book, and the like.  “We have to promote our own lullabies and make sure they remain as they are,” she emphasizes.  “It flows through our bloodstream so we have to make sure that they know their roots.  That’s the importance of it.  You’re using music because it’s what is interesting, and stimulating the young ones.  These are tools to help.”

Audiences who get to watch the videos will surely have a memorable takeaway.  “I think the young parents would be very excited to have a fresh and new set of repertoire to sing to their babies,” Junia advises.  “There are not many activities that you can do for infants.  It’s really a repertoire of songs that can truly help them in this stage to nurture their young ones.  They will be proud that they know something indigenous.”

  • IN PHOTOS: What Went Down at The Eraserheads Huling El Bimbo 2022 Concert

The Eraserheads once again sealed their position as OPM legends with an epic 3-hour concert attended by a 75,000-strong crowd that brought to life the whole 2-hectare space of the SMDC Festival Grounds.

A Setlist of Epic Proportions: 3 Decades In 31 Songs

Beyond a carefully curated 31-song set, even the house music as gates opened to the opening act and intermission set by The Diegos, the soundscape set the mood that took fans on a journey to the 90s.

There was no better way to open the show than having Francis M to join the band brought to life via hologram to perform “Superproxy.” It was a powerful number layered with meaningful nostalgia as Francis M’s sons Elmo and Arkin Magalona also jammed with their father alongside Ely, Raymund, Buddy, and Marcus.

After opening with “Superproxy,” they played “Back2Me” which fans immediately recognized as the track that follows Superproxy in the Cutterpillow album. As if to prove a hunch right and much to the fans’ delight, the band proceeded to play the entire Cutterpillow album in its true succession except for one song which they saved for the second act. The first act ended with “Fill Her” performed by Ely with a singular spotlight that sent chills throughout the crowd.

“When you play rock and roll, you can’t just play at 20%, it always has to be 110% or it won’t be rock and roll,” Marasigan said previously, during the concert’s press conference. And as if the first act wasn’t enough, the entire second act is definite proof of the band giving more than 110% for their fans from across generations of OPM-lovers.

The second act opened with the song “Pop Machine” after a 30-minute break. Different music personalities joined the Eraserheads to bring more of their hits to life: Jazz Nicolas, Mikey Amistoso, Audrey Dionisio, select cast members of the musical “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” and the A.M.P. (Asosasyon ng Musikong Pilipino) Orchestra Band conducted by Mel Villena. They played “Sembreak”, “Sabado”, “Ligaya,” and “Lightyears” in varying levels of different arrangements that lent a new flavor to the music. Arkin Magalona returned to the stage with Ely’s son Eon Buendia for a performance of “Saturn Return,” while Gary Valenciano amped up the energy with a version of “Christmas Party” that also featured him playing bongos and drums right beside Ely.

Everything Onstage A Show of Its Own

It wasn’t just the music that concert-goers raved about after last night. A humongous stage fitting for a farewell show of the OPM legends also came to life with a giant reversed E logo that moved at different parts of the show. The stage was also filled with LED screens that showed visual fit for each and every song, adding dynamic layers of story and spectacle to the whole music experience. The UP Pep Squad also performed during the intermission which was a nostalgic nod to the roots of Eraserheads as students of UP Diliman.

Another heartfelt moment was when the band played a version of “With A Smile” with the orchestra, preceded by Ely telling the crowd that the newfound appreciation for “With A Smile” as a song of hope during the pandemic also inspired them to come back together as a band.

After “With A Smile”, the mood shifted again with a high-energy rendition of “Insomnia.” The second set ended with the songs “Spoliarium” and “Magasin,” where the reversed E logo onstage started moving and changing back to yellow to signal the end of the concert.

Even as the stage blacked out with only the band logo left with light on, the crowd did not move and just started chanting in their own sections as if knowing the night still hasn’t ended. After a few moments, they came back and performed an encore set of “Pare Ko,” “Minsan,” “Alapap,” and – as the fitting final number – “Huling El Bimbo” which ended with a 5-minute display of fireworks that wowed the entire crowd.

A Music Experience Enjoyed From Start To Finish

There was no doubt that the actual performance would be reaping praises, but another noteworthy feedback from concert-goers was the seamless concert experience. People took to social media to share their appreciation for the constant live updates, the organized queues across all sections, and even the numerous food booths all over the SMDC Grounds.

The concert was also streamed via SmartLive, Cignal, and iWanTFC allowing fans from all over the Philippines and the world to also see the concert from wherever they are.

The local music scene has never seen such a historical show, and there’s no better group to set that bar than frontman Ely Buendia, lead guitarist Marcus Adoro, bassist Buddy Zabala, and drummer Raimund Marasigan. From the Philippines, the Eraserheads is also set to do the Huling El Bimbo World Tour 2023. Stay tuned in the official social media accounts for more announcements.

The Huling El Bimbo Concert – Eraserheads Reunion Concert 2022 is a production by WEU Event Management Services, Ant Savvy Creatives and Entertainment Inc., DVent Productions and Myriad Entertainment Corporation. • Agoda unveils a price freeze feature that will warm bargain hunters’ hearts

While winter is settling in over the Northern Hemisphere, it’s freezing even in more tropical climes this year as Agoda introduces its new ‘Price Freeze’ feature. Price Freeze allows travelers to lock in the best deals on Agoda, pay a marginal deposit, and freeze the price from at least one day to up to 14 days.

“Asia has re-opened, and the world is back traveling, yet people still want to know that they are getting the best possible deals, and that’s what Agoda always strives to ensure”, said Omri Morgenshtern, CEO of Agoda. “There are times when consumers aren’t ready to fully commit to their purchase and need time to decide, but we don’t think that should mean they miss out on the best deals. By introducing price freeze technology to the Agoda platform we are able to offer travellers even greater flexibility, choice and best prices.”

Price Freeze truly warms the hearts of bargain hunters as even though throughout the ‘price freeze’ period, accommodation costs may go up or down, consumers won’t pay any more than the agreed deal and in fact will enjoy additional savings should the price drop. If travelers choose not to book within the specified price freeze period, only their initial deposit is forfeited.

To mark the launch of this price freezing feature, available on desktop and mobile web at launch, and available globally and on all Agoda platforms in early 2023, Agoda has created a specially created augmented reality game on Instagram.  The goal is to catch as many freezing items as possible (snowflakes, ice lollies, ice cubes) and avoid the hot items (tea, flames) to achieve the highest score. The game is available here instagram.com/ar/2382038961943203/ or by scanning the QR code.

  • Why going “clean” can be better for your skin health and the environment

For many skincare gurus today, effectiveness is no longer the strongest barometer in choosing what goes into their daily beauty regimen. Most of them are also choosing clean beauty.

    Amway Organic Farm Photo 3

While there’s no official definition of clean beauty, skincare experts agree that these products are free from harmful toxins like parabens and phthalates—known to interfere with hormone functions—that can be absorbed by the skin. This is why many clean beauty brands opt for natural ingredients to avoid industrial chemicals that can be carcinogens or even pesticides.

Choosing clean beauty also helps divert toxic chemicals away from water sources like streams and rivers, helping reduce marine pollution that can threaten wildlife and ecosystems. Clean beauty products aren’t only good for you, they can also be great for the environment and are made cruelty-free. One of the significant tenets of clean beauty philosophy would be traceability, as beauty experts, safe personal care product advocates, and even environmentalists believe that transparency in business is one of the best ways to ensure that a beauty brand is delivering on its promise.

    Artistry Skin Nutrition 4

Filipino skinthusiasts can experience a new approach to skincare, one that promises healthy beauty without compromises, with Artistry Skin Nutrition™, the clean, traceable, certified vegan skincare line from the global leader in health and wellness, Amway.

    Artistry Skin Nutrition 2

Artistry Skin Nutrition works like supplements for the skin, thanks to its cutting-edge skin science and the infusion of powerful phytonutrient botanical ingredients like acerola cherry, pomegranate, and spinach from Amway’s Nutrilite, the only vitamin brand in the world to grow, harvest and process plants from their own organic farms which are maintained using sustainable, chemical-free methods with the careful guidance of Amway’s own agricultural experts and scientists.  This makes Artistry Skin Nutrition the only brand in the world that can truly claim traceability from seed to skin so you’re sure that the products are pure, safe, and effective. This also means that the beauty brand can identify the manufacturing location, extraction location, all the way to the specific crop of the raw material for every final product that touches your skin.

    Artistry Skin Nutrition 1

Every Artistry Skin Nutrition formula is infused with White Chia Seed grown in certified-organic Nutrilite farms, the line’s star ingredient, which is a nutrient-dense, ancient grain superfood packed with omega-3, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to effectively achieve healthy-looking skin.

Artistry Skin Nutrition products are also formulated without parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, and over 1,300 other iffy ingredients that discerning clean beauty followers may be concerned about. The brand also conducts clinical, consumer, safety, in-vitro and ex-vivo testing to support its safety and efficacy claims for its formulas. These studies are performed to ensure the products are well-tolerated and effective and satisfy consumer expectations.

As a responsible beauty brand, Artistry Skin Nutrition formulas are free from animal-derived ingredients and are registered with The Vegan Society, one of the oldest vegan organizations in the world that are based in the United Kingdom and work to educate consumers about the value of going vegan.

The brand has also taken concrete steps to improve operational sustainability. Artistry Skin Nutrition cartons are produced from paper, a renewable resource. The paper comes from sustainably managed forests practicing responsible forest management. These products are also produced in a 90% landfill-free facility. It can also be highlighted that 100% of the electricity required by Amway to manufacture Artistry products in the United States is offset by the company’s continuing investment in sustainable wind power.

Skincare routines don’t have to feel like selfish acts of indulgence. With brands like Artistry Skin Nutrition that takes the responsibility offering healthy beauty seriously with clean, traceable, vegan skincare products, you can achieve your skin goals without causing harm to animals, communities, and the environment.

  • New Attraction at Robinsons Magnolia has Visitors Spinning Around

There always seems to be something new to see, taste or experience at Robinsons Malls. Whether you’re there to shop, dine or meet up with friends, the popular mall chain has it all. One of its newest attractions consists of six sculptural pieces at the base of the Christmas tree outdoors. If they remind you of oversized tops like the ones some of us used to play with as children, you wouldn’t be too far off the mark.

They’re spinning chairs and they’ve quickly become a favorite of mall-goers—both young and old— who frequent this well-loved Quezon City mall. Made using rotational molding with polyethylene, the chairs are hollow on the inside and allow users to spin around using only their body weight. All around the surface of the chairs are textured bands or lines that help prevent users from slipping off.

    Magnolia 1

It might take a bit of getting used to but once you hit your stride, the thrill is one of a kind. It’s like your very own mini carnival ride where you’re the only passenger.

The original Spun Chair was designed by Thomas Heatherwick over a decade ago. It was initially an exploration on whether or not the process of metal spinning could create something to sit on. Heatherwick produced several metal versions tapping the process used to make timpani drums. Metal sheets were pressed against a rotating cast iron form using a paddle, welded and polished. The ones at Robinsons Magnolia are made of polyethylene and are thus much lighter. When allowed to stand on its narrow base, the Spun looks almost sculptural in form. The real fun begins, however, when it is leaned on its side and you get to lounge, rock and spin a full 360 degrees. It’s an experience not to be missed even if you think you might look a bit odd, spinning around, laughing and looking at the sky and the mall’s fairy-lit Christmas tree.

During a recent visit to Robinsons Magnolia, the six chairs—two each in gray, purple and red—were all being used, with several people waiting patiently for their turn. That’s another nice thing about this friendly neighborhood mall—the people seem nicer, more patient and agreeable.

The mall’s outdoor area is a favorite spot as it provides a literal breath of fresh air. There are animal-shaped stools and a mini playground for the kids but it also attracts dog owners who walk their leashed pets around the astroturf.

Feeling a bit peckish? Check out Public Eatery at the mall’s new expansion. It’s an updated food court that offers a selection of cuisines like Pinoy inihaw, Thai favorites, and Singaporean-Chinese fare like seafood laksa and claypot rice.

Robinsons Malls is determined to provide a novel and exhilarating experience for its shoppers, young and old. Aside from Robinsons Magnolia, the Spun chairs can be experienced at Robinsons Antipolo and Robinsons Galleria Ortigas and soon at Robinsons MetroEast, Robinsons Galleria South, and Robinsons Naga.
