If you’re a murder-mystery fan, My Perfect Stranger is a fascinating whodunit with a twist: the main characters travel back in time to 1987. The male lead, news anchor Yoon Hae-Joon (played by the handsome Kim Dong-Wook), is trying to solve a series of murders to prevent his own death in the present. The female lead, literary editor Baek Yoon-Young (played by Jin Ki-Joo who at 34 can easily pass as a high school student), accidentally time travels and chooses to stay to get to know her mother more.
Meanwhile, All That We Lovedis a story about two very close high school friends, Go Yoo (Sehun of EXO) and Ko Joon-Hee (Jo Jun-Young), and their object of affection, Han So-Yeon (Jang Yeo-Bin). Go Yoo is the school’s star basketball player while Go Joon-Hee is a shy, less athletic student. While the series also fast-forwards to when they are adults, the main story plays out when they are in high school.
The two K-dramas have very different plotlines, but My Perfect Stranger and All That We Loved are both set in high school — and here are a few lessons everyone can learn from their stories about teenage life in South Korea:
1. Have fun while you’re young
In My Perfect Stranger, Yoon Hae-Joon finds himself in 1987 by way of a car that can travel back and forward in time (it’s not a DeLorean). In the present time, his own car stalls one rainy night and he chances upon the time-traveling car in a tunnel, which takes him to a Korean countryside village in 1987. The series shows that while Korean kids wore colorful outfits in the ‘80s, it wasn’t nearly as “wild” as they were in the West. But, like everywhere else, teenagers just wanna have fun, even in a rural Korean village. The 80s vibe is so fun to watch!
2. Keep your friends close — they can literally save your life
All That We Loved opens with a big plot point. Go Yoo and Go Joon-Hee are wearing hospital gowns and fooling around — or at least the former is laughing while the latter is quite somber. In the next scene, they are being wheeled into an operating room where Joon-Hee is getting a kidney transplant from Yoo. The two boys have very different personalities, but their friendship keeps them close; Yoo defends Joon-Hee from school bullies while Joon-Hee and his grandmother provide him with a sense of family.
3. Don’t let complicated family relations break you
In My Perfect Stranger, Yoon-Young’s mom Lee Soon-Ae (Syeo Ji-Hye) commits suicide in the present, leaving her a note by the riverbank where she drowns herself. When she sees her mom in 1987, who is now younger than her, all her feelings of guilt make her stay. Yoon-Young tries to prevent her mom from marrying her dad who will not be a good husband. It’s amusing to watch the two women play out familiar family dynamics in reverse.
In All That We Loved, Yoo’s parents are both doctors and have no time for him. This leads him to become very resentful and so he appreciates his friendship all the more with Joon-Hee. It is Yoo’s parents who look after Joon-Hee when he is beaten up by the school bullies and brought to the hospital.
4. Knowing how to stand up for yourself is essential
It’s a lesson that high schoolers need to learn: stand up for yourself or you will be bullied all your life. Yoon-Young tries to teach her mom Lee Soon-Ae to stand up against her classmate Ko Mi-Sook who orders her to do her writing assignments.
Yoo also tries to teach Joon-Hee to stand up to bullies, telling him that he is taller than even their teachers, but it’s just not Joon-Hee’s personality to fight back — or at least not yet in the earlier episodes. Joon-Hee suffers from cellular memory syndrome (memories transferred through cells from an organ transplant) and when he is attacked by bullies, Yoo can also feel that his friend is experiencing physical pain.
5. Walk your own path
To the point of being stubborn, the main characters in My Perfect Stranger and All That We Loved are all headstrong and resolute in what they want. They are all charming and likable, but like with any good drama, we want to shake them by the shoulders and say, “Hey, communicate with each other!” or “Tell him about your past!” or “Tell her that you love her!”

Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua team up for the fifth time in “The Equalizer 3,” which ties Fuqua with the late Tony Scott as Washington’s most frequent director collaborator.
Washington says there are many reasons why he looks forward to reteaming with Fuqua: “His spiritual maturity, his collaboration, his humility, his eye,” says the actor. “There was never a question about his talent, his experience. We’re brothers – I trust him completely, he trusts me, and I’m excited about our future together. The deeper he goes, the higher he’ll go, and I’m not talking about movies.”
Fuqua returns the compliment: “Denzel constantly surprises me because the environment changes. He’s like an athlete,” says Fuqua of Washington. “If Michael Jordan is playing against the Celtics, it’s one game. If he’s playing against the Lakers, it’s another game. Each situation Denzel is in, he’s so much in the moment of the character, that there’s times I’m discovering constantly, ‘What’s he going to do?’”
Watching Washington be “in the moment” of his character, in Fuqua’s words, is a unique experience. “I’ll go to Denzel to give him a note about something he did, and he’ll literally ask, ‘What did I do? What did I say?’ He’s so in the moment,” shares Fuqua. “So I tell other actors that they have to be in the moment with Denzel. Your instinct has to be heightened and you have to really listen. You can’t come in with preconceived ideas, because that won’t work. It’s just like a dance – Denzel will stick to the intention of the scene, but you must move with him.”

This September, expand your horizons by indulging in a culinary journey that will deliciously transport you to the heart of Spain. Throughout September 2023, Terraza Martinez is offering a special four-course menu for only Php1,950 that features Doña Elena, the No. 1 olive oil brand in the Philippines with a full range of Mediterranean products such as olives, capers, anchovies, and many more, Doña Elena Olive Oil is made from 100% pure olive oil from Spain, loved and trusted by home cooks and chefs alike.
A native of Valencia, Spain, Terraza Martinez’s executive chef and founder Luis Martinez remains true to his roots. Just like in the Philippines, Spain’s family-oriented culture with cooking and eating together is essential, they use only the freshest seasonal produce, quality meats, and seafood in their recipes. And for Chef Luis who considers every meal as an expression of passion and love, using a superior olive oil is a vital ingredient in his repertoire. “I truly believe that we are what we eat and olive oil is the healthiest of all. [Aside from health benefits] its pleasant taste, smell, and texture that enhance all the flavors of a good recipe, my type of cuisine revolves around the product. Everything is based on that, on the absolute respect that I have for the product.” Chef Luis emphasized. “On the other hand, [using good-quality olive oil] reminds me of my childhood wherein my breakfasts were based on a simple toast with extra virgin olive oil and salt.”
For the exclusive Doña Elena 4-course special menu, Chef Luis describes the combination as “perfect” and he would transport diners to the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. An equal balance of light and refreshing, bold and meaty, the carefully selected dishes are all infused with a rich tapestry of Spanish flavors.
The culinary journey begins with a Gazpacho, crafted “Terraza Martinez Style.” A traditional cold soup made from blended Doña Elena Pure Olive Oil and canned Diced Tomatoes, the recipe is taken up a notch with sauteed garlic prawns, tomato tartar, crispy capers, croutons, and Doña Elena anchovies. The result is smooth and creamy but the added twist of textures make it a unique take on a classic.
For the second course, Luis presents a – Cured Snapper Carpaccio. Delicate without being overpowering, this dish consists of thinly sliced snapper fish, marinated in Doña Elena Extra Virgin Olive Oil, crushed tomato, fried capers, and lime zest. The fish is tender and fresh, and the marinade provides a zesty and aromatic touch. The dish is served with rosemary crackers that add a crunchy contrast. Doña Elena Extra Virgin Olive Oil is ideal for this dish, as it has a fruity and mild flavor that compliments the fish for a silky mouthfeel. Doña Elena’s Canned Tomatoes and Capers also add some acidity and saltiness to balance the sweetness of the fish.
Glazed and charcoal-grilled, the Presa Ibérica de Cerdo takes center stage for the main course. The hearty ibérico pork loin, served with truffle mashed potato, olive oil caramelized shallots, wild fresh mushrooms, and demi-glacé sauce. This dish is a feast for the senses, as it combines the succulent and juicy meat of the Ibérico pork, which is one of the finest breeds of pigs in the world, with the earthy and aromatic flavors of the truffle, mushrooms, and shallots. Doña Elena Pure Olive Oil is used to caramelize the shallots and to drizzle over the mashed potato, adding a nutty and buttery note to the dish.
To conclude this unforgettable Spanish culinary voyage, the tangy smooth Manchego Cheesecake has a light touch of Doña Elena Pomace Olive Oil. The cheesecake is also topped with blueberry jelly and mango slices that add some sweetness and juicy flavor, for a fresh spin on this well-loved dessert.
Even before superfoods, there was olive oil. As one of the ingredients cooks reach more often in enhancing flavors of dishes, it is also profusely used in making some of the world’s greatest meals. Doña Elena Olive Oil comes loaded with high levels of antioxidants and is packed with vitamins E, K, and A that help lower bad cholesterol. It comes in three variants to suit any type of dish with a flavorful and aromatic taste. There’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil for dips and salad dressing; Pure Olive Oil for pasta and everyday cooking; and Pomace Olive Oil for roasting and frying.
Chef Luis Martinez and Doña Elena invite everyone to try the Doña Elena special menu at Terraza Martinez and experience soulful Spanish cuisine. “The special menu we created for Doña Elena is a refreshing and simple menu that showcases the Mediterranean style of cooking using Doña Elena products. We use fresh fish, meat, and vegetables that are lightly cooked to preserve their natural flavors. It’s a perfect menu for enjoying with friends and family in a cozy and elegant atmosphere. Come and join us at Terraza Martinez this September and experience the high quality of food and service that we offer.”

“I think that it’s the idea of the ultimate evil possessing the vessel for the ultimate good,” says Peter Safran, producer for “The Nun II.” “I think nuns are supposed to be unabashedly good in the service of goodness, and the most evil thing is mocking that goodness by taking her form. I think that’s what it is that people really respond to.
“And let’s be honest, a lot of people are very scared of nuns in general, but I think from a supernatural thriller perspective, the idea of that evil embedded in what should be the epitome of good is just so sacrilegious and compelling.”
Directed by Michael Chaves, “The Nun II” finds Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) once again coming face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun, this time in France, where a priest has recently been murdered.
“I think Sister Irene is very reluctant to come back into this realm because of how close she had come to death in her first encounter with Valak,” says Safran. “But I think she realizes that because she’s the only one who’s faced Valak and survived, and she has vanquished the demon in battle at least once – I think she realizes that for the sake of good, she must do it. She was a novitiate in the first movie, but she is a nun now, and it is her duty to fight on the side of good. I think she realizes that her duty overcomes the natural fear that pervades her as a result of knowing she’s going to have to go back into battle against this epitome of ultimate evil.”
Another familiar face returning in the sequel is Frenchie, now called by his name Maurice. “Because Maurice [played by Jonas Bloquet] is based on a real character – and we introduced him in the original ‘Conjuring’ with Ed and Lorraine Warren [played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga] in that old footage – we loved the idea of the Maurice story and knew that we wanted to continue it well before it ever gets to the time in the late ’60s/early ’70s,” says Safran. “But what happens in the interim? Here he was in Romania, he survived the demon, and now what happens? We loved the idea of following him.”
Though some characters may be familiar, audiences must get ready for new and more frightening scare sequences. “It’s important that every movie that we make be a worthy successor to ‘The Conjuring’ name, so we wanted to make sure that we had a really original story that did not feel derivative,” Safran shares. “We love the idea of switching it up, and it’s more of an investigation this time. Then the stories coincide in the third act for the big, exciting finale. We wanted to make sure that the scare sequences felt fresh and not derivative of the earlier films… it was just about making sure that we delivered on every front – true stakes, great characters, unique scares – and just an intensity that makes it live up to ‘The Conjuring’ name. I think that [director] Michael Chaves brought it all together and that audiences are really going to enjoy ‘The Nun II.’”

With their contributions not just to the local film industry but also to the country’s popular culture, the FDCP will bring into the forefront the significance of Philippine comedy over and beyond the entertainment value it serves to the public by honoring Filipino personalities whose names have become synonymous with what Pinoy comedy is.
Michael V.
In his more than three decades in the industry, Beethoven Bunagan, most popularly known as “Bitoy” or Michael V., has been widely regarded as one of the most prolific comedians in the country.
As one of the brains behind “Bubble Gang,” the longest-running comedy show in the Philippines, Bitoy, with his genius in creating characters such as “Yaya Angelina,” “Bonggang Bonggang Bongbong,” “Mr. Assimo,” and “Doña Yna Moran” among others, has skillfully pulled off and made his brand of comedy, mixed with satire and social commentary, a phenomenon in itself.
Eugene Domingo
Known in the industry as “Uge,” Eugene Domingo started out as a theater stalwart who has worked with theater icons and National Artists Tony Mabesa and Ishmael Bernal before she became the film and tv actress that she is now.
Among the films she starred in include her titular role in the “Kimmy Dora” franchise and in Marlon Rivera’s award-winning film “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank” which was also the country’s official entry to the Academy Awards in 2011.
Uge has managed to bring the discipline and nuances shaped by theater to television and screen to create intelligent characters and to raise the level of comedy to more than just a popular art.
Ai-Ai Delas Alas
Martina Eileen Hernandez, also known as Ai-Ai Delas Alas, is widely regarded as the country’s Queen of Comedy. Her comedic talent has earned her some box office hits like the “Ang Tanging Ina” franchise directed by the late Wenn Deramas.
Aside from doing comedy shows and films, Ai-Ai Delas Alas also excels in dramatic roles which earned her accolades in numerous award-giving bodies here and abroad. Among the recognitions she received were the Best Actress Award from the Los Angeles Philippine International Film Festival in the USA for the drama titled “Area” and the PMPC Star Awards for TV Best Single Performance for her role in the drama-anthology series “Maalaala Mo Kaya.”
Ai-Ai’s more than three decades in showbiz has allowed her to craft the style of acting that can range from slapstick to dramatic, while personifying the faces of entertainment in her iconic roles on both the small and big screen.
Vice Ganda
From doing standup comedy at comedy bars to becoming one of the most sought-after comedians in the country, Jose Marie Viceral popularly known as “Vice Ganda,” has truly become an icon in her own rights.
Blockbuster hits, high-rating television shows, advertisements, and sold out concerts here and abroad are proof of the influence she holds in the industry. Vice Ganda has established a distinction in the industry never before achieved by a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Tito, Vic, and Joey
Continuously standing the test of time is the trio of Tito and Vic Sotto and Joey De Leon, collectively known as the TVJ. For more than five decades, TVJ has been able to transcend the changes brought by time and has since become everyone’s “dabarkads” through the longest-running television show in GMA Network.
TVJ is also able to embody authentic Filipino humor, proving their ability to build and establish rapport with the evolving audience in a highly-competitive market of the industry.
The late Comedy King, Dolphy
The undisputed and irreplaceable King of Comedy, the late Rodolfo “Dolphy” Quizon, is the highlight of this year’s PFIM as the industry pays tribute to his contributions to the entertainment industry.
Dolphy was the ultimate personification of the Filipino Everyman, representing the fusion of the two faces of entertainment—both tears and laughter. His brand of comedy was able to transcend beyond different generations and eras of entertainment that include bodabil, television, and films.
The late King of Comedy will be conferred with the FDCP’s Highest Honors for being the multimedia artist who represents the brightest of Filipino comedy.
The Awarding Ceremony will be held on September 29 at Acacia Hotel Manila during the Closing Ceremony of PFIM 2023. A grand tribute for the late King of Comedy will also happen as the tradition of humor and laughter continues and be carried by the younger generation of comedians.
Through the celebration of the PFIM 2023, the FDCP aims to celebrate Philippine Comedy—what it meant to us before and how important it is to us now.
