  • “Tokyo Mer” Movie Adaptation Premieres Nov. 22 Exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas

    Moved by the sight of medical practitioners and other essential workers risking their lives to save people at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, TV producer Masanao Takahashi created Tokyo MER (stands for Mobile Emergency Room), a tribute to the heroes of the pandemic. What started as a humble show of gratitude would go on to become a hit TV series in 2021 – with a movie adaptation that is currently one of the highest-grossing films in Japan this year.

    This month, Filipino audiences can watch Tokyo MER on the big screen when it opens exclusively in Ayala Malls Cinemas on November 22. Reprising his TV role as Tokyo MER’s lead doctor, Ryohei Suzuki leads the cast of the film and is joined by notable newcomers, including Japanese idol boy band SixTONES’ Jesse as Tomohiro Shiomi, a trainee doctor assigned to Tokyo MER, and Anne Watanabe as Tomo Kamoi, the chief doctor of the MER team in the neighboring city of Yokohama.

    The movie, directed by Aya Matsuki, takes place two years after the TV series, and the setting is the nearby city of Yokohama. The filmmakers wanted the big-screen adaptation to have a more realistic feel, so the main setting of the emergency is the Yokohama Landmark Tower, one of the tallest buildings in Japan. “In terms of the story, it matches the setting of spreading MER across the country [creating more MERs], and the Tokyo MER team is also close enough to rush to rescue,” said screenwriter Tsutomu Kuroiwa. As the emergency in the film is a big fire breaking out at the Tower, the filmmakers consulted with the city’s fire department to lend more authenticity to the film. They also consulted with medical supervisors about designing the newly established Yokohama MER’s ER car; the ER car, an emergency vehicle with the technology and equipment to perform emergency surgery on the scene before transporting seriously injured patients to the hospital, is a signature element of the show. Get ready to see an ER car that’s even more advanced than the one on the TV series. “I think it truly became a ‘dream vehicle,’” said director Aya Matsuki of the new ER car in the film.

    Of the new additions to the cast, producer Ami Yagi said, “[The character of Yokohama MER Chief] Kamoi is a cool woman, in contrast to Kitami [Tokyo MER chief played by Suzuki both on TV and in the movie]. However, she is not just cold, but also has a side that shows her loveliness as a human being. I cast Anne Watanabe because I thought she would be able to embody this character.”

    And of SixTONES idol Jesse, Yagi said, “I thought Jesse would show a new side through the role of Shiomi, which is a little different from the bright characters he shows on variety shows. Shiomi is a character who grows out of his shell, so I was hoping that it would be similar to how Jesse himself tackles roles that he has never played before.”

  • FX’s “The Bear” Renewed for a Third Season Exclusively on Disney+

    The Bear,’ which wowed audiences in its first season only to achieve even greater heights in season two, has become a cultural phenomenon,” said Nick Grad, President, FX Entertainment. “We’re so proud to partner with Christopher Storer, Joanna Calo, Josh Senior, and the rest of the creative team, as well as the brilliant cast led by Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.     Season two followed Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), Sydney Adamu (Ayo Edebiri) and Richard “Richie” Jerimovich (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they worked to transform their grimy sandwich joint into a next-level spot. As they stripped the restaurant down to its bones, the crew undertook transformational journeys of their own, each forced to confront the past and reckon with who they want to be in the future. 

    Of course, it turned out the only thing harder than running a restaurant was opening a new one, and the team had to juggle the insane bureaucracy of permits and contractors with the beauty and creative agony of menu planning. The transition brought a newfound focus on hospitality as well. As the entire staff was forced to come together in new ways, pushing the boundaries of their abilities and relationships, they also learned what it means to be in service, both to diners and each other. 

    FX’s The Bear was created by Christopher Storer (“Ramy,” “Eighth Grade”), who acts as executive producer alongside Joanna Calo (“BoJack Horseman,” “Undone”), Hiro Murai (“Atlanta,” “Station Eleven”) of Super Frog, Josh Senior and Matty Matheson, with Tyson Bidner (“Ramy”) serving as producer.   • Warner Bros. Discovery Unveils Thrilling HBO Asia Originals Drama “Fired Up!” in Partnership with Damou Entertainment

    Warner Bros. Discovery today announced new HBO Asia Originals, Fired Up! (working title), a coming-of-age drama series by production house, DaMou Entertainment in Taiwan. In celebration of its 10th Anniversary, DaMou Entertainment announced a slate of projects – including their upcoming collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery – during the 2023 Taiwan Creative Content Fest on November 9. Fired Up! will commence production in December 2023.

    Adapted from the popular Kakao Webtoon comic Itaewon Class created by GwangJin, this series represents DaMou Entertainment’s third collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery with past successes including The World Between Us, which received 14 nominations and won six major awards at the 54th Annual Golden Bell Awards, and Workers, which won four major awards for Best Miniseries or Television Film at the 56th Annual Golden Bell Awards. “We’re thrilled to announce another collaboration with DaMou Entertainment, particularly as they celebrate their milestone 10thAnniversary.     tvN has launched linear TV channels tvN Movies Pinoy and tvN Premium in partnership with Cignal TV, the leading pay TV provider in the Philippines.

    tvN Movies Pinoy is a Tagalog-dubbed channel which brings the vibrant world of Korean films to Filipino audiences in their own language; this complements tvN Premium, a high definition (HD) channel that features the latest Korean dramas and shows.

    The partnership also brings Cignal TV subscribers tvN Premium, featuring the latest Korean dramas like “Not Others” based off a webtoon of the same title starring Jeon Hye-jin, Sooyoung (from SNSD), Ahn Jae-wook, and Park Sung-hoon. “Not Others” is about the love-hate relationship between mother and daughter and will be airing from November 8 onwards.
