SuperManila Comic Con 2026 Honors Philippine Komiks Icons With Exclusive Darna and Kaluluwa ni Dante Editions

Before Filipino superheroes became fixtures on television, film, and digital platforms, their stories first came alive in the vibrant world of komiks.

This September, SuperManila Comic Con 2026 pays tribute to that enduring legacy with two exclusive collector’s releases featuring landmark works by two of the country’s most celebrated creators.

Fans can look forward to Classic Darna #1, which brings back the earliest adventures of Mars Ravelo’s iconic heroine, and Kaluluwa ni Dante, one of the acclaimed masterpieces of National Artist Francisco V. Coching.

Available only during SuperManila Comic Con, both releases celebrate the artistry, imagination, and storytelling that helped shape Philippine popular culture.

Classic Darna #1 Brings a Filipino Icon Back to Her Roots

Few Filipino characters have achieved the cultural impact of Darna.

Created by legendary komiks writer Mars Ravelo, Darna made her debut in Pilipino Komiks in 1950 and quickly became a symbol of courage, heroism, and strength.

Now, collectors can return to the character’s earliest days through the Classic Darna #1 SuperManila Comic Con Exclusive.

The special release reprints stories from Darna’s original komiks appearances, including her first appearance and celebrated origin story. The stories feature illustrations by acclaimed Filipino artist Nestor Redondo, whose expressive and detailed artwork became closely associated with the heroine’s classic image.

For this exclusive release, internationally renowned artist Stanley “ARTGERM” Lau gives Darna a fresh visual showcase with special cover artwork created for both editions.

Two Limited Darna Editions for Collectors

The Classic Darna #1 release will be available in two strictly limited versions.

The Full-Color Virgin Cover Edition, priced at ₱1,000, is limited to 1,000 copies and presents the classic stories in vivid color.

Meanwhile, the Sepia Cover and Black-and-White Interior Edition, priced at ₱800, is also limited to 1,000 copies. Its sepia-toned ARTGERM cover and black-and-white interior evoke the traditional komiks experience familiar to generations of Filipino readers.

Adding even more collector appeal, every copy of both editions comes with an exclusive Darna trading card.

These editions do not present a new Darna adventure or modern retelling. Instead, they preserve and reintroduce the original material that helped establish the character as a Filipino pop culture legend.

Kaluluwa ni Dante Returns in a Rare Collector’s Edition

SuperManila Comic Con 2026 will also spotlight the extraordinary work of Francisco V. Coching, one of the most influential figures in Philippine comics.

Known as the “King of Komiks,” Coching built a remarkable body of work across four decades, creating dozens of serialized stories that combined dramatic storytelling with striking visual detail.

Among his most celebrated titles are Pedro Penduko, Hagibis, Sabas, ang Barbaro, El Indio, Lapu-Lapu, and Kaluluwa ni Dante.

First serialized in 1949, Kaluluwa ni Dante tells the story of Dante Magtanggol, who embarks on an extraordinary out-of-body journey under the guidance of the mysterious Dr. Futiphar.

    Kaluluwa ni Dante

Along the way, the story blends mystery, fantasy, adventure, romance, and moral conflict while exploring themes of justice, redemption, love, and the struggle between good and evil.

Coching’s cinematic compositions and richly rendered artwork helped make the story one of his standout works.

His influence would eventually reach far beyond the pages of komiks. Fifty-one of his 63 komiks novels were adapted into films, demonstrating the extraordinary reach of his storytelling across Philippine entertainment.

In 2014, Coching was posthumously named National Artist for Visual Arts, further cementing his place in the country’s cultural history.

Only 300 Copies of Kaluluwa ni Dante Will Be Available

For SuperManila Comic Con 2026, Kaluluwa ni Dante will be released as a special 116-page softcover edition.

The book retains its original black-and-white format, allowing readers to appreciate Coching’s detailed line work as it was originally presented.

Only 300 copies will be produced.

Priced at ₱1,000 per copy, the release is expected to be one of the convention’s most sought-after items among komiks collectors and fans of classic Filipino illustration.

A Celebration of the Stories That Shaped Filipino Pop Culture

Together, Classic Darna #1 and Kaluluwa ni Dante highlight two distinct but equally important chapters in Philippine komiks history.

    Darna Sepia by Arterm

Darna represents one of the country’s most recognizable heroic figures, while Kaluluwa ni Dante showcases the storytelling mastery of one of Philippine comics’ greatest artists.

By bringing these works back into print as limited collector’s editions, SuperManila Comic Con gives both longtime enthusiasts and younger readers an opportunity to experience the creativity that defined a golden era of Filipino komiks.

The two releases will be available exclusively at the SMCC Merch Booth at The Concourse during SuperManila Comic Con 2026, happening September 4 to 6, 2026, at The Concourse and SPACE at One Ayala, Makati City.

With quantities strictly limited, collectors will want to secure their copies during the three-day event.

  • Barkada-Approved Summer Plans That Won’t Break the Bank

Barkada-Approved Summer Plans That Won’t Break the Bank

These days, not every barkada summer plan has to mean booking flights or planning a whole weekend away. In fact, the plans that usually push through are often the ones closer to home, because it’s so much easier to get everyone to say yes and actually show up.

It’s also a more practical way to make the most of the season while keeping things simple, manageable, and more budget-friendly – no hassles or stress over planning. If you’re looking for activities your whole barkada can easily say yes to, here are three ideas that are worth considering this summer.

    1. Rediscover your neighborhood

Summer is a good time to rediscover what your neighborhood has to offer, because more often than not, there are plenty of activities nearby just waiting to be discovered. But with busy schedules, they often get overlooked.

It can be as simple as checking out a nearby fitness studio or trying out movement-based activities. For something slower-paced, there are also museums and galleries to visit, or pop-up bazaars featuring local brands, crafts, and hands-on activities that offer a different kind of barkada hangout. It’s a nice way to make summer feel different from the usual without needing to go far or spend too much.

    2. Go on a food crawl

Food crawls are one of the easiest barkada plans to organize, because who doesn’t love sharing a good meal with their closest friends? They let you explore different spots in one area, try more food, and split dishes (and the bill!) so everyone gets to taste and enjoy a bit of everything.

There are plenty of go-to areas around Metro Manila to do a food crawl. Binondo is home to some of the oldest Chinese restaurants and iconic merienda spots, while Maginhawa is packed with a wide range of food options for every craving. San Juan is also becoming a go-to neighborhood for new and exciting concepts, while Poblacion has enough options to keep the barkada going well into the night.

For trusted restaurants and sulit finds, content creator Remy Eats regularly shares neighborhood food guides and recommendations (Watch here on Tiktok and Instagram) that are perfect for barkada food trips. But as fun as they are, settling the bill is usually where things get tricky. Luckily, with GCash, barkadas can easily settle bills with hassle-free and fast payments.

If someone pays ahead for the group, splitting the bill with the barkada is just as easy when using GCash. “The best thing about food crawls is how spontaneous they can be,” says Remy. “When you’re hopping from one place to another, it helps to use GCash so everyone can send their share right away without worrying about cash or change.”

    3. Set up a barkada sleepover

Why go out when you can just stay in? Sleepovers are the settings for some of the best barkada summer moments, and it’s a great way to make the most out of the season without the worries of reservations or having to travel far.

Whether it’s preparing a meal, or setting up a movie marathon until late at night, or turning the living room into the setting for a board game tournament, there’s no shortage of ways to keep things fun without spending much.

To make it even more engaging, each friend can take on something to bring – snacks, dessert, or drinks – or you can simply order in and keep things easy. Whatever it is, splitting payments is still just as seamless when done through GCash.

For content creator Paco (@chomppzz on Tiktok and @fpchompz on Instagram), this kind of setup captures what summer should feel like. “Barkada sleepovers are honestly one of the stories that you tell your kids in the future— no planned itinerary, no big spending, just a night with good food, company, and unexpected stories you will never forget”

Make barkada summer easier with GCash

At the end of the day, the best summer plans are the ones where there is no complicated planning involved, no budget stress, and no payment hassles. With GCash, barkadas can split bills, send payments, and manage shared experiences – making group plans easier to say yes to. Download the GCash app today and say yes to easier, more manageable barkada activities this summer!

  • The Art of We: How Aaron Virata Mempin is Building Bridges Through Shared Creativity

The Art of We: How Aaron Virata Mempin is Building Bridges Through Shared Creativity

What does it take to trade a twenty-year corporate career for a canvas? For Filipino artist Aaron Virata Mempin, the transition from brand strategy to geometric abstractionist wasn’t a goodbye to his past, but a masterful evolution of his future.

    Aaron Virata Mempin BRIDGES 2998

In the traditional art world, we often imagine the creator as a solitary figure locked away in a studio. But walk into a gallery featuring Virata Mempin, and that myth quickly dissolves. For this abstractionist, art isn’t just a monologue; it is a high-energy conversation. Virata Mempin is building a “Collaborative DNA” that is shaking up the local scene by treating his practice as a platform for shared authorship, he’s proving that in the Manila art world, two (or three) heads are officially better than one.

From Boardroom Strategy to Shared Canvases

Virata Mempin’s transition from marketing to full-time artist was an intentional evolution. He speaks the language of inventory and reach, running his studio like a professional enterprise.

“Marketing taught me that art is not just about the canvas, but also about sustainability and numbers,” he explains. “I treat my private space as my research and development phase, while exhibitions are the launch. I balance them by keeping a strict schedule that honors both the need for solitude and the necessity of public dialogue.”

This strategic foundation is bolstered by his partnership with his wife, Daianne Moreno-Mempin, whose social enterprise Katha Pilipinas fosters creative leadership and sustainable livelihoods.

Currently housed in Navita’s Haus, a repurposed 1970s home in Poblacion turned creative hub, the Bridges, an exhibit (running until March 28, 2026) serves as the physical manifestation of Virata Mempin’s philosophy

Founded by educator Elo Coronel-Quiambao, Navitas Haus provides a “home-like” backdrop where art and community naturally converge. Here, Virata Mempin’s meditative lines meet the raw energy of the next generation: budding artists Zaha Anatalia M. Cruz and Nikolai C. Quiambao.

“Working with Nik was refreshing,” Mempin reflects. “Her take on the Creation of Adam brought a new energy that my geometric lines naturally flowed with. It feels like a perfect bridge between her classic inspiration and my modern abstract style.” He adds that adding his signature lines to Zaha’s colorful sari-sari store felt like bringing a modern touch to a classic Filipino scene.

    The Power of “Organized Chaos”

In a creative space that often rewards visual drama, Mempin’s work stands for subtlety. He describes his trademark as “organized chaos,” using geometric lines to invite deeper, personal conversations.

For Virata Mempin, restraint is power. It is the art of knowing when to stop, allowing space for the viewer to breathe. By embracing his non-traditional background, he has found the confidence to treat the canvas as a communal space. “I’ve been surprised by how people sense the calmness they feel,” he notes. “It proves that geometric language is truly universal.”

    Why “Shared Authorship” Matters

In a city defined by the constant competition for space, Virata Mempin’s “organized chaos” and minimalist horizons offer a quiet alternative. His work built on a singular realization: art is not a solo journey. By championing shared authorship, Virata Mempin transforms the canvas into a discourse, proving that the Filipino spirit of Bayanihan can thrive in the contemporary art world.

“Collaboration prevents my practice from becoming static,” Mempin explains. From past partnerships with legends like Dominic Rubio and Quiccs, to international projects with Huw Richards Evans, Mempin acts as an ambassador for connection.

    2026 Collaboration Roadmap

This year, Mempin’s calendar underscores his commitment to cross-disciplinary alliance:

    • April: Art x Streetwear – A collaboration with Jeff Cordova of JAAM Customs to merge visual art with bespoke sneaker design at Easter Coffee Club, Antipolo.
    • May: Art x Craftsmanship – An intersection of fine art and jewelry with Mitzi Parungao (Mitzi Jewels), in partnership with the Rotary Club of Makati.
    • July: Mentorship – A return of the Bridges exhibit, extending his platform to a new group of young, aspiring artists.
    • Ongoing: Masters & Institutions – A joint exhibit with Ronna Manansala at Altro Mondo Creative Space, and the Lux in Altum show at Ateneo De Manila University featuring Ricky Francisco and Lala Tuazon.

    Art Without Borders

Looking ahead, Mempin envisions his work evolving into large-scale public installations and global stages. Beyond sales, he measures success by his legacy of opening doors. “If my work facilitates meaningful exchanges between people, then I’ve succeeded,” he concludes.

“Pinwheel”, a solo work by Geometric abstractionist Aaron Virata Mempin, inspired by the Pililla Wind Farm and his childhood memories of blowing pinwheels with friends.

Catch the Magic Before it Moves

Ready to see how these “bridges” are built? The clock is ticking on his current show. Don’t miss the chance to see how a corporate-strategist-turned-artist is making the Philippine art scene a lot more inclusive, one line at a time. Visit “Bridges” at Navitas Haus, Poblacion, before March 28.

For audiences increasingly drawn to work that offers quiet space instead of sensory overload, Virata Mempin’s art provides a compelling alternative, one that reminds us that sometimes, the most resonant statements are made quietly… and together.

Lizanne Uychaco’s “Spectrum of Abundance” Brings Art, Intention, and Good Fortune This Year of the Horse

Walking into Gallery C at Conrad Manila creates a sense of entering a space infused with deliberate energy. Color resonate softly on the walls, symbols recur with subtle confidence, and each artwork conveys aspirations of equilibrium, prosperity, progress, or serenity. This is the essence of Spectrum of Abundance, the latest solo exhibition by artist and corporate leader Lizanne Uychaco, and it’s as thoughtful as it is visually striking.

    Lizanne Uychaco

As we gallop into the Year of the Horse, this show feels like the perfect way to invite positive energy into your life. The exhibit, which debuted earlier this month, features 24 fresh mixed-media works that continue Uychaco’s signature exploration of Chinese symbolism, Feng Shui philosophy, and contemporary visual language. Rooted in her Chinese-Filipino heritage, the collection reflects a deeply personal yet universally resonant meditation on what abundance really means today.

Meet the Artist: The Philippines’ Leading Feng Shui Artist

Lizanne Uychaco is recognized as the nation’s foremost Feng Shui artist. She integrates her Filipino-Chinese heritage into works that blend enduring traditions with modern approaches. She began her painting practice over 30 years ago as a means to alleviate the demands of her executive responsibilities. Her formal entry into the art scene occurred in the early 90s through the Ayala Museum’s program for emerging talents, followed by numerous exhibitions. These include her initial solo presentation, “Heaven and Earth,” at Conrad Manila in June 2019, and the subsequent “Colors of Prosperity” at the same venue in January 2023.

    Lizanne Uychaco Spectrum of Abundance

Her fascination with Feng Shui sparked early on. During childhood, a significant illness interrupted her education, prompting her family to seek help from a Feng Shui specialist. The expert gave her with a special charm, a “magic coin” intended to promote health, wealth, and favorable outcomes. Wearing it as a pendant, she fully recovered and has maintained good health thereafter. Modeled after the Qing Dynasty, this coin serves as a central element in her creations, embodying harmony, safeguarding, the equilibrium of yin and yang, abundance, and the continuum of existence.

To this day, she picks up similar coins and jade during her travels, regarding her artworks as contemplative elements that draw beneficial energy. That same spirit of spreading warmth aligns perfectly with Conrad Manila’s welcoming vibe, where her pieces often feature this iconic oriental symbol.

Explore the Exhibit: 24 Exceptional Works

Nestor Jardin curated this exhibition as part of Conrad Manila’s esteemed “Of Art and Wine” series, presenting 24 mixed-media pieces that examine concepts of intention, unity, and prosperity through icons such as dynamic horses and historic coins.

Rather than viewing prosperity as something purely material gain, Uychaco expands the idea into something more holistic: abundance in purpose, harmony, movement, and intention. This is evident in her recurring motifs. Horses, for instance, appear throughout the collection, representing liberty, strength, and forward motion. Ancient coins, layered and repeated, speak to balance and continuity, while calligraphic elements introduce rhythm and grounding.

    Lizanne Uychaco Spectrum of Abundance

What distinguishes Spectrum of Abundance is its tangible quality. Uychaco’s background in sculpture, pottery, jewelry, and calligraphy informs every piece, resulting in works that feel layered not just in meaning, but in texture and technique. Paint is built up, surfaces are worked and reworked, and symbols are never merely decorative; they are intentional, placed with care and respect for tradition.

Despite the cultural references, the exhibit remains approachable. It encourages observers to pause and engage, whether or not they are familiar with the symbolism. Each artwork stands confidently on its own, yet together they form a cohesive visual narrative, one that feels especially fitting for the start of a new year, when reflection and renewal are top of mind.

The opening at Conrad Manila drew an intimate crowd of art lovers, business leaders, and longtime supporters of Uychaco’s work. The setting itself proved to be an ideal backdrop: calm, elegant, and quietly luxurious, allowing the pieces to take center stage without distraction. Gallery C continues to establish itself as a space where Filipino artists can present work that bridges heritage and modern expression, and Spectrum of Abundance aligns effortlessly into that vision.

    Art With a Purpose

For Uychaco, who is also known for her leadership in corporate governance and workplace inclusion, the exhibit feels like an extension of her broader worldview. There is a sense of balance between discipline and creativity, structure and freedom, qualities that echo both her professional life and her artistic practice. In many ways, the exhibit reads as a visual philosophy: progress anchored in tradition, success guided by intention.

Conrad Manila’s Of Art and Wine – Lizanne Uychaco Spectrum of Abundance

Conrad Manila Of Art and Wine: Lizanne Uychaco Spectrum of Abundance is not an exhibit that overwhelms. Instead, it lingers in memory. Viewers may find themselves drawn back to certain pieces, noticing new details with each pass, an added layer, a repeated symbol, a subtle shift in color. It’s the kind of show that rewards attention and reflection, offering something different depending on where the viewer is in their own journey.

Why Manila’s Art Enthusiasts Should Visit

In Manila, where the vibrant pathways of Binondo converge with contemporary districts in Pasay, Uychaco’s exhibition links our diverse cultural legacy to present-day experiences. Aligned with the Year of the Horse, it emphasizes notions of luck, advancement, and accomplishment that hold particular significance in our society.

The exhibit runs until March 21. Step into Conrad Manila’s Gallery C, soak up the energy of each piece, and carry a little of that harmony and prosperity with you into 2026. In a season often defined by noise and excess, Lizanne Uychaco’s work offers a refreshing pause, a reminder that abundance can be intentional, meaningful, and deeply personal.
