  • Galerie Stephanie’s New Location: Three Solo Exhibitions & Cartellino’s First Physical Gallery

Galerie Stephanie and Cartellino are thrilled to announce the opening of their new gallery space at Shangri-la Plaza, Mandaluyong City.

Galerie Stephanie celebrates new location with three solo exhibitions as Cartellino opens first physical gallery space

Founded in 2007, Galerie Stephanie is one of the leading artist-centered galleries in the Philippines. Started as a platform for modern art and established local artists, the gallery has evolved its program into an edgier and more contemporary line-up.

    Galerie Stephanies new location

Since 2015, Galerie Stephanie has been ardent in showcasing the rigor and variability of art at a global crosscut, providing exhibition opportunities to international artists as well as joining established local and global art fairs, and presentations with partner galleries in Japan, Indonesia, and North America.

Cartellino, on the other hand, was launched in 2020 as the country’s first art e-commerce website. It started as an online-only platform, digest and shop. Four years later, Cartellino opens its first physical gallery space.

The Little Paper Show presented by Cartellino

Galerie Stephanie and Cartellino’s new and larger location features four exhibition rooms in one  dynamic gallery space for two contemporary art galleries.

Galerie Stephanie celebrated its relocation to a larger and more dynamic gallery space with three simultaneous solo exhibitions by Filipino pop-surrealist Mr. S (aka Mark Jeffrey Santos), Bandung-based visual artist Addy Debil, and Japanese hyperrealist Hideo Tanaka.

Intertwining Memory Lanes by Bandung based visual artist Addy Debil

“Intertwining Memory Lanes” by Indonesian artist Addy Debil features vibrant-colored and smiling characters that exude scenes of connection, child-like memories, and community. The hyperrealist Japanese painter Tanaka’s “Iki na Hikari (A Breath of Life)” portrays the meticulous brushstrokes that stimulate contemplation on the beauty and authenticity of the everyday mundane. Mr. S’ “Yutori” highlighted his skill in depicting fantastical and dreamlike landscapes with his trademark adventure-seeking characters accompanied by larger-than-life creatures.

Meanwhile, to commemorate the establishment of their first physical space, Cartellino featured over thirty of their artists, those who have been part of our journey so far and those for new journeys. Aptly entitled, “Little Paper Show”, it is a celebration of all the works, words, and aspirations—no matter how little, how brief—that constitute the broad history of the platform.

The four exhibits will be on view until March 3. Galerie Stephanie and Cartellino are now located at Level 6 East Wing of Shangri-la Plaza, EDSA cor. Shaw Blvd., Mandaluyong City. For inquiries, they can be reached at inquiry.galeriestephanie@gmail.com or call (+632) 7940-5726. The gallery is open every day from 10 am to 9 pm.

  • Arte Bauan and Arte Likha artists from Batangas combine Music and Visual Art in PLAYLIST 3 Art Exhibit in ARTablado

Music that inspires art and vice versa might seem like a stretch but artists have long been influenced by the things around them. By tapping into their five senses, they are able to come up with something hopefully fresh and new.

Take, for example, the Russian abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky who believed music and color were inextricably linked. Kandinsky associated each musical note with a color on his palette and once said that “the sound of colors is so definite that it would be hard to find anyone who would express bright yellow with bass notes or dark lake with treble.”

    Arte Bauan 1

Granted that Kandisky had a rare neurological condition called synesthesia—where he saw colors when listening to music—but the idea is certainly one worth experimenting on. This is exactly what two artist groups from Batangas have done in their ongoing exhibit at ARTablado in Robinsons Galleria.

“Playlist 3: Symphony of Sight and Sound,” which runs until February 15, is a group exhibit featuring artworks inspired by movie soundtracks. The participating artists from Arte Bauan include Yelcast, Ada Panopio, Windsor Magnaye, Jerwind Magnaye, Cheyzer Manalo, Ruby Bagsit, Sarah Jane Tumambing, Bill Perez, Batilyo and Doy Kastilyo. Those from Arte Likha are Temyong, John Kier Contacte, Justin Magbojos, Joy Bagay, Sleygh and Ria Manalo. It’s a concept they tackled in two previous exhibits where their artworks were inspired by their favorite songs. This time, however, they chose movie soundtracks that hopefully more people can relate to. To complete the experience, there will be codes next to each piece that viewers can scan to hear the soundtrack that served as inspiration.

    Artablado 1

“In Playlist 3, we aim to capture the essence of beloved movie soundtracks through captivating artwork. Our goal is to immortalize the emotion and spirit of these iconic soundtracks in visual form, creating a unique fusion of music and art,” said Yelcast, founder of Visual Poetry Philippines and Arte Bauan.

Given how most Filipinos are hopeless romantics, the two-week exhibit is bound to resonate with them.

“Painting a song from a movie soundtrack is a beautiful and meaningful creative process that allows artists to tap into the emotional, interpretive, narrative and personal aspects of the music and translate them into visual art,” Yelcast added.

    Artablado1 1

The group chose to hold their exhibit at ARTablado, citing how it’s an “ideal platform to showcase their work to a diverse ad engaged audience” and pointing out that is “renowned” for promoting local artists.

“By collaborating with this esteemed gallery, Arte Bauan and Arte Likha gain access to a professional, well-equipped space that enhances the presentation of their artwork. This partnership also signifies a mutual dedication to fostering creativity and supporting emerging artists within the local community,” Yelcast said.

The outspoken artist then shared a message of empowerment to artistically inclined youth. “As young Filipino visual artists, you possess the ability to shape narratives, challenge perceptions, and inspire others through your art. Embrace your identity, hone your skills, and continue to push boundaries—your voice matters, and it has the potential to resonate far and wide.” “Playlist 3: Symphony of Sight and Sound” is on view at ARTablado in Robinsons Galleria until February 15.

  • Moving Forward with CCP Pasinaya: Sulong

Two decades of bringing arts closer to Filipino people, and the Pasinaya: The CCP Open House Festival just keeps getting better and bolder in 2024.

For the first time, Pasinaya goes beyond the capital city and spreads its wings to Visayas and Mindanao. The multi-arts festival will be simultaneously happening at the CCP Complex and its partner museums, the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Arts in Iloilo City, and Tagum City, Davao del Norte on February 3 and 4, 2004.

    PASINAYA POSTER

Following the theme “Sulong,” the country’s largest multi-arts festival returns on a grander scale with more artistic and cultural offerings in its 20th years.

“After escaping the confines of the pandemic in last year’s Pasinaya: Piglas, the new partnership with ILOMOCA and Tagum City pushes the boundaries. The CCP will always find ways to provide spaces for our artists and cultural groups where they can showcase their talents and create new audiences who will participate in artmaking and appreciate the best that the Philippines has to offer,” said CCP artistic director Dennis N. Marasigan.

PASINAYA PHOTO 1 Photo by Athena Fontamillas

A wide variety of exciting activities await the public in Pasinaya 2024. Happening in various venues at the CCP Complex such as CCP Front Lawn, Liwasang Kalikasan, Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez and its surroundings, and parade ground of Vicente Sotto Street, and in partner museums and galleries, the festival boasts over a hundred shows, workshops, and other activities in music, theater, dance, visual arts, film, and literature to choose from.

PASINAYA PHOTO 2 Photo by Athena Fontamillas

With its experience-all-you-can, pay-what-you-can scheme, participants may go in and out of the different CCP venues to join 30-minute workshops in various art disciplines conducted by leading artists, resource persons, and teachers, or watch as many shows, screenings, and activities as they can.

Pasinaya kick starts on February 3, 7 am, with an opening salvo and special program, followed by the flash mob dance featuring the festival jingle, Sulong Pasinaya, which has become a tradition of the art festival through the years.

PASINAYA PHOTO 3 Photo by Athena Fontamillas

Festival components include Palihan where audiences can join the different workshops; and Palabas where they can watch unlimited shows, featuring more than 3,000 artists from different art fields. Festival programmers and art groups will meet in Palitan to do some business-to-business meetings.

Paseo Museo shuttles audiences to various partner galleries, museums, and art spaces around the metro with the hop-on, hop-off tour scheme. Pagtitipon, meanwhile, gathers the Kaisa sa Sining partners from different regions of the countries to participate in the annual art festival. Finally, Pamilihan features the sale of goods from all over the country.

PASINAYA PHOTO 4 Photo by Athena Fontamillas

Registration starts as early as 6:30 am at the Bukaneg side of the CCP Front Lawn and at Vicente Sotto Street.

In 2023, audience counts reached 37,888 – 12,055 participated in 43 Palihan workshops, 24,482 watched 101 Palabas shows (58 at the CCP Complex, and 43 in partner museums/galleries), and 1,236 enjoyed the Paseo Museo tours in 13 museums and galleries. Total donations amounted to Php 253,514.

PASINAYA PHOTO 5 Photo by Athena Fontamillas

With the partnership with ILOMOCA and Tagum City, CCP plans to exceed its target audience counts, collaborate with more artists, stagehands, technical crew, and other cultural workers from various places in the country, and create partnerships with more local government units.

“Breaking free from the common notion that CCP is just the building in 2023, we have continuously proved that we can be anywhere. This year, we are reaching farther and wider into different performing spaces, and into the regions. Year 2024 will be the year we, at the CCP, continue to move forward, despite the challenges that will come our way,” said CCP president Michelle Nikki Junia.

PASINAYA PHOTO 6 Photo by Athena Fontamillas

Established in 2005, Pasinaya was conceived as a jump start to the National Arts Month celebration; hence it is scheduled every first week of February. Originally, it was created as a preview for the CCP’s artistic programming for the year. But through the years, the festival has grown bigger and become a venue for art appreciation and education, networking, and collaborations.

  • REVIEW: PETA’s CONTROL + SHIFT is breaking new ground with new material

CONTROL + SHIFT is a series of 8 new works (both short plays and short contemporary dance performances) that hopes to “spotlight the theme of narrative change” as it is mentioned at the start of the show. Running for two weekends (January 12-14 and January 19-21), the performances are set to reframe the ways with which we speak about each other as, according to the preface at the start of the show, that we are drowning in a world full of misinformation and disinformation.

It feels like a statement to start the new year for PETA to usher in a new era of exploring socially relevant plays that has been the theater company’s bailiwick. I was able to catch Set A, which had three short plays and one contemporary dance performance, which was an exciting way to start a new year of theater for me.

    SET A

    Momsilogues
Written by Zoe Damag, Julia Enriquez, Pia Viola, Gold Villar-Lim
Directed by Gold Villar-LimPerformed by Kitsi Pagaspas, Julia Enriquez, Pia Viola

    Momsilogues

This play is about three mothers who come together to cook for a school activity and in the ensuing bonding activity end up revealing striking issues involving women. They range from the difficulties of being a mother of a child on the autism spectrum, to giving up your dreams because of an unplanned pregnancy, and even juggling a family and career on your own.

    Momsilogues 1

‘Momsilogues’ takes its time to get into the meat of the story – the three monologues of each mother and the issues they represent – and it builds the world and the characters carefully. It gives you time to get to know them. What’s interesting is the way the writers allow the women to push each other’s buttons, to test their boundaries, before they break down into a real moment of vulnerability and gives these women a chance to support each other. There is an attempt to take a symbolic approach here: each mother is an ingredient to tapsilog, and it’s incorporated into the narration how each one is like a fried egg, the tapa, or the fried rice. At first, it doesn’t work, but by the time the play is done, it sort of hits home. It helps that the actresses are really cooking tapa on stage (they offer it to the audience at the end of the show).

Pagaspas, Enriquez, and Viola do a strong job at bringing these characters to life. There are times when the “woke and progressive” mom gets a little cloying – her lines feel a little forced and scripted – but the overall effect of the entire play, especially the monologue about the mom taking care of the child on the spectrum really hits its mark.

Ang Mga Halimaw sa Compound Z
    Written by Sabrina Basilio
    Directed by Norbs Portales
Performed by Felicity Kyle Napuli, Sabrina Basilio, Kiki Baento, Nicole Manlulo, Donn Boco, Jason Barcial, Ada Tayao

Ang Mga Halimaw sa Compound Z

Of the four performances, ‘Ang Mga Halimaw sa Compound Z’ is the one that doesn’t quite work. The short play is set in a science fiction world where monsters live amongst men. People turn into monsters and, in a place called Compound Z, the monsters are being rehabilitated so they can become human again and reintegrate into society. A reporter visits the compound to interview some of the monsters there for an article about the cure, but she has an agenda of her own.

The reason the play doesn’t quite succeed is that the play’s running time isn’t enough to build the world properly. The concept needs more time (maybe a full-length play?) to fully flesh out its world. There are many symbolic elements here – the monsters can be metaphors for activists or insurgents, the religious order that runs compound Z can be analogous to a tyrannical government – but the world needs to develop more. The work is also not character-driven, but plot driven, and so the story might also be stronger if explored as a film.

Due to the constraints of time, trying to fit within the duration of a one-act play, a lot of the story feels rushed and a lot of is discussed rather than acted out. The play never really gives us any example of how these monsters are monstrous and, for this concept to work, we really need to see it in action. ‘Ang Mga Halimaw sa Compound Z’ is an interesting experiment, but I think the true take away here is that the story is meant for a different medium.

    Albularyo
Direction, concept, and choreography by Carlon Matobato
Dramaturgy by Ian SegarraPerformed by Carlon Matobato, Noelle Polack, Ekis Gimenes, Mico Esquivel, Carlos Deriaga, Raflesia Bravo

    Albularyo

A contemporary dance piece, ‘Albularyo’ shows us a faith healer as he battles spirits to in the contemporary world. The ballet configures video to amplify the performance and creates a series of segments, the faith healer takes on several dancers who are trying to cause harm – from smoke demons to spirits that chatter and talk and even one that consumes – and it creates a dazzling spell. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a contemporary dance performance and seeing Raflesia Bravo dance again is always a welcome treat.

‘Albularyo’ is a moody piece that teeters towards the repetitive but manages a strong ending and powerful performances.

    Children of the Algo
    Written by Mixkaela Villalon
    Directed by John Moran
Performed by Ado Villanueva, Jan Magcaling, James Pe Lim, Mika Nitro

    Children of the Algo

This was a fantastic piece. The four actors mimic the experience of skimming through social media – Tiktok or Instagram or Facebook reels – and it’s just a dazzling display of content acted out live. Each actor goes through different ways by which these social media influencers engage with their audience. From unboxing videos to pseudo-intimate confessionals, to showing us their home, or talking about their daily expenses. The play, at first, seems like it has no rhyme or reason. Just a never ending display of content and the more the play unfolds, the more the play seems to say how social media is so vapid, noisy, and insubstantial (at least that’s what I got from it).

But as one of the content creators start to realize that life is not fair for everyone, and a strong typhoon connects all four content creators together, reality is fractured and one creator manages to break into other people’s content, the play manages to create a strong criticism against the way social media has affected the way we see the world.

This is a brilliant play that feels new and is coming in strong with something important to say about the way we see the world and how it is filtered by our interactions in social media.
