  • Emotive florals that catch the discerning eye

The lush, floral paintings currently on exhibit at ARTablado are by two young artists who used what they learned at school and in their line of work to come up with impressive pieces. Interior designer Summer Pasana and graphic designer Rica Cena are now full-time visual artists who have teamed up for their first two-woman show.

    ARtablado

The two consider themselves as sisters who have an affinity for flowers and, interestingly, music. “We spend most of our time listening to music when we paint. It can range from musicals to love songs,” they said in a joint statement.

One album they both listened to and were able to connect with while painting was “Nurture” by Porter Robinson. The album which follows an artist’s struggles to find beauty in daily life and in the natural world struck a chord with both of them. It was thus a natural progression to choose “Nurture” as the title their exhibit which runs from April 1 to 15 at ARTablado, Robinsons Galleria.

Summer’s pieces range from large-scale paintings to smaller ones that measure 12” x 12”. Her depictions of irises, poppies, dogwood blooms, phalaenopsis and tulips show an attention to detail but always with a romantic touch as seen in the curvy, wavy lines.

    ARTablado1

The artist said that when she paints, she pours her heart into each piece. “I paint because it is where I get to express myself wholeheartedly, without any rules,” Summer said.

She started painting a decade ago when she was still at university and recalled how seeing her father paint as a child, inspired her to do the same. “I remember vividly seeing my Dad painting green leaves on a canvas using his palette knife, and mixing oil paints on a glass palette. I found this truly inspiring.”

Summer expressed her desire and was gifted with the materials. Her first painting was a landscape of mountains.

Rica’s interest in the visual arts started when she was only four years old. She was inspired by sketches made by her mother but only tried her hand at painting when she was in high school.

“My parents bought me my first set of oil paints and a bottle of linseed oil. I painted a landscape with a blue sky and a shining sun, lots of trees and a green meadow in the middle. I only knew how to draw and sketch portraits of women before and I thought I should learn how to put colors on my drawings,” Rica recalled.

Both artists initially experimented with portraits with Summer drawing inspiration from Elly

Smallwood and Sarah Graham while Rica admires the evocative work of German artist Valerie Lin.

The Filipino artists Summer looks up to include Lydia Velasco for her studied use of color, and Gerry Joquico because of the way “he portrays distinctive emotions.”

For “Nurture,” however, flowers reign supreme. “When I decided to become a full-time artist in 2022, I grew fond of flowers or botanicals, and created my own style… using bold colors and undulating lines,” Summer said.

Rica’s style has an almost sculptural quality. Her white florals, layered peonies, and liquid-like fabrics appear to be caught in a moment—crystallized.

She “adores” flowers and finds their fragility enchanting. “I feel happy inside whenever I create something that is beautiful and meaningful. What I love the most about painting florals is that I get to use different color palettes. I love mixing my own colors as it helps me improve my color matching,” Rica said.

The two learned about ARTablado through social media. “It’s a great opportunity to be able to exhibit our pieces together as they coexist and show a kind of mutual connection,” they said in a joint statement.

“We hope we are able to connect with every passerby and form a connection with every piece that captures their eye. We want our viewers to stay a while then leave with a part of our emotions that we expressed through our artworks.”

  • Baraptasan 2024: Bringing Different Voices in One Stage

For a mambabalagtas, verbal joust and poetry are so much more than a way to express complex emotions and stories. While it was born as a form of entertainment during the bleak era of American colonialism, Balagtasan – a form of traditional verbal jousting – became a venue to discuss socio-political issues that besieged contemporary society.

    1 Medium

Through facts, rhymes, and clever lines, the mambabalagtas would exchange discussions on the pros and cons of a topic relevant to the community. When it first happened on April 6, 1924, Balagtasan became the rage.

Town folks would gather at the plaza and listen to mambalalagtas defend their stand on certain social issues. While it seemed like a verbal display of one’s mastery of the Filipino language, it became a powerful tool to engage the public and create informed conversations on social realities.

But through the years, with the advent of new entertainment platforms, verbal jousts become few and far between in recent times.

With this in mind, the Cultural Center of the Philippines embarks on a new project to make Balagtasan and other types of verbal jousts remain in the consciousness of the Filipino people, especially the young generations.

To commemorate the centennial of Balagtasan, CCP, through its Kanto Kultura program, presents BaRaptasan, a Balagtasan competition with a twist. The competition gives Balagtasan a contemporary feel with the incorporation of rap.

With topics discussing the clash between modernity and tradition, the CCP’s Kanto Kultura BaRaptasan Grand Finals is open to the public. Ten finalists will battle it out in the finale, slated on April 6, 2 PM, at the Rizal Park Open-Air Auditorium

The group finalists are: Ang Mga Supling ni Angela, Bagong Koronadal Advocates (City of Koronadal), Barapbida Normalista, DMD, El Setecientos, Harayasista Group, Lakbay Iral, Rapper sa Pinas, Tanglaw, and Waraptasan.

ANG MGA SUPLING NI ANGELA OF TABACO CITY, ALBAY

Paying homage to the first Filipina poet Angela Manalang Gloria, and one of Tabaco City’s proud daughters, Ang Mga Supling ni Angela hopes to present Tabaco City with a bang on the national stage. The group is composed of Kirschen Xyvrl Balajadia, Carlo Campit, and Franco Balingbing.

ANG MGA SUPLING NI ANGELA Group Photo

The proud children of Tabaco believe that their hometown has a tight-knit creative community, something that Filipino people should know. “Kasi ‘pag sinabing Albay, ang unang naiisip ay Legazpi City. Pero meron ding Tabaco City. Gusto naming ipakilala sa national stage na nandito kami,” said the group.

BAGONG KORONADAL ADVOCATES (CITY OF KORONADAL) OF SOUTH COTABATO

Working students and full-time storytellers Angel Faith Leal, Jhon Van Lapu, and Philip Jay Leaño make up the Bagong Koronadal Advocates group. Aside from being familiar with verbal joust competitions, the members share the same love for theater. “Pare-pareho naming mahal ang entablado,” declared the group.

    CITY OF KORONADAL

The group wants to bring the city of Koronadal wherever they go, especially for BaRaptasan. To sincerely support the group, Mayor Eliordo U. Ogena even went to the extent of awarding them the Gawad Parangal ng Sining of Koronadal City.

    BARAPBIDA NORMALISTA OF TACLOBAN, LEYTE

Members Ray Padiwan, Wally Concepcion, and Dave Padel are third-year students taking up Education (majoring in Filipino) at Leyte Normal University. Handpicked by their professor for the competition, the three want to reintroduce their university as an avenue for creatives, not just academics.

    BarapBida Normalistas Group Photo

“May kakayahan ang mga taga-Leyte Normal University na ipamalas ang kanilang galing sa mga ganitong malikhaing paligsahan,” said Barapbida Normalista.

    DMD OF MAKATI CITY

The fourth group, DMD, consists of rappers John Dave P. Rosimo, Marielle Lou C. Bernardo, and Reynaldo S. Bernardo from Makati City. Their group name stood for their initials.

    DMD Group Photo

Before BaRaptasan, the three had been joining rap competitions. Couple Bernardo and Bernardo are members of Champion Paikot, a group of rappers, but would sometimes join contests as a duo. Rosimo has also been competing in rap contests.

EL SETECIENTOS OF SANTA ROSA, LAGUNA

El Setecientos, a group from Santa Rosa, Laguna, is composed of Simon, Mhagz, and Arkyak. Besides continuously honing their craft as seasoned rappers, they now want to present their craft to the national stage. Always eager to experience something new, El Setecientos of Laguna signed up for BaRaptasan to contribute to the artistic landscape of the Philippines.

HARAYASISTA GROUP OF LABO, CAMARINES NORTE

The Harayasista Group may have performers Louie L. Francia, John Earnest M. Evidor, and Amynel L. Garino, but it also has Angel Yasis as its coach. Hailing from Camarines Norte, Yasis looked for performers to create his own group after assisting another competitor.

    Harayasista Group

Meanwhile, Evidor became interested in BaRaptasan because it engages his two passions – music and poetry. “Nagkaro’n po ako ng interes dahil pinagsama ‘yong rap at Balagtas. Ang ganda!” he exclaimed.

Their group name, Harayasista, came from the Filipino word haraya, which translates to wandering mind. Yasis inserted his surname “Asis” and added the syllable “ta” for “tao” or people.

LAKBAY IRAL OF DASMARIÑAS CITY, CAVITE

Lakbay Iral members Aaron Vincent G. Jimenez, Louie Ross P. Reyes, and Gabriel Angelo Pedrosa formed the group because of the BaRaptasan competition. True to its translation, Lakbay Iral aims to live life by creating and immersing in the arts.

    Lakbay Iral Group Photo

Shortly after realizing their passion for sharing arts and crafts, the three members found themselves in a non-government organization, strengthening their bond as artists. Its members participate in open mic competitions despite their busy schedules as students.

RAPPER SA PINAS OF BOCAUE, BULACAN

Ernesto Canoy Jr., Oliver Monidero, and Fernando Melencio Jr. met through a Facebook group for rappers. Melencio reached out to the other two and quickly became friends. Eventually, they formed Rapper sa Pinas and applied for the competition. They want to bring to the competition the natural nature of their performance, emphasizing their message and working hard to make sure it will be heard.

    Rapper sa Pinas

TAGAPAGTAGUYOD NG LITERATURA AT WIKA (TANGLAW) OF ILOCOS SUR

The Tagapagtaguyod ng Literatura at Wika or TANGLAW is actually an organization from the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College, under the Secondary Education Program. Edlyn Baniqued, Deprisse Guco, and Schulamight Manzano chose to honor their school as they represented their institution on the BaRaptasan stage. They are all third-year Filipino Majors who were invited by their professor to join this competition.

    WARAPTASAN OF TACLOBAN CITY, LEYTE

Waraptasan is a wordplay spun by its members to show that they are from Tacloban City. With Waray as their language, members Ma. Regina Babon, James Leala, and Kenneth Cinco believe that “when doing art, you have to bring your own identity.” And that is exactly what they plan to do in BaRaptasan.

    Waraptasan Group Photo

Despite coming from different parts of the Philippines and different backgrounds, all 10 finalists share the same passion for storytelling, rap, poetry, and theater. All of them anchor on their passions, hoping they will emerge victorious and be named the first Hari ng BaRaptasan.

  • Sena, father of the art workshop, leads group exhibit at ARTablado

In the four years since it was established, Robinsons Land ARTablado at Robinsons Galleria has grown and strengthened its reputation for being a platform for emerging and established Filipino artists. Dozens of paintings, sculptures and even woven art have been displayed on its walls.

PR ARTablado Presents Cross the Line Dynamic Art Group

ARTablado’s high-traffic location in the popular Ortigas mall attracts both the art lover and the casual visitor. For Arts Month this year, the gallery is featuring 50 paintings created by 25 members of the Dynamic Art Group led by Esther Garcia. Fernando Sena, considered by many as the Father of the Art Workshop because of his passion for art education, is one of its core members.

The members of the Dynamic Art Group are composed of established and seasoned artists as well as aspiring and young artists who are determined to continuously improve their art.

The Dynamic Art Group chose the theme, “Cross the Line” because of its connotations such as going beyond the normal since artists should be courageous when it comes to creating.

They believe artists should grow with the times and avoid becoming copycats. Their aim is to create based on what they feel, see and imagine. Crossing the line also means freedom. The members are free to join other art groups, participate in shows in other galleries with other groups.

The group said that crossing the line also means having the freedom to speak out but that members should respect one another: no bragging, no bullying, no slander.

The group previously staged an exhibit entitled “The Art of Manila Bay Rehab,” which documented the bay and its surrounding areas. For their efforts, the Manila Bay-ani Award—an international recognition given by environmentalist groups from Madrid, Normandy, Washington DC, Singapore and the Philippines—was bestowed on Esther Garcia and the Dynamic Art Group for portraying the beauty of Manila Bay.

They have also held exhibits to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Philippines that benefited the educational needs of children of fallen soldiers, and another one in cooperation with the Voice of the Free foundation for the benefit of abused women.

Aside from regular communication, the Dynamic Art Group keep tabs on one another through group activities including on-the-spot painting events and lectures on skills improvement.

Fernando Sena playfully described the ongoing exhibit as a feast for the senses. “If I likened it to a restaurant, it would be one offering an eat-all-you-can buffet. Here at the ‘Cross the Line’ exhibit, you can see all you can and admire all you can,” he said.

Aside from Sena and Garcia, the 23 other participating artists are Jun Rocha, Bing Siochi, Al Perez, Darryl Ajero, Harry Torres, Vic Bachoco, Rick De Villa, Venancio Cabisada Jr., Ely Tablizo, Yolanda Batara, Dan David Garcia, Emmanuel Salva, Rara Carillo, Wendy Rondaris, Charlie Carabella, Chona David, Sally Ocampo Paja, Marilou Viado, Baby Grace Palma, Charina Biteng, Fritz Marcos Flores, Kim Bojanding, and Joyce Maimban.

As a father figure of the group and as the Father of Art Workshops, Sena had this to say to young artists. “Keep on painting. The more you paint, the more you learn to love your art. Love God.”

The “Cross the Line” exhibit runs until end of February at ARTablado, Level 3, Robinsons Galleria.

  • Celebrating a Decade of Artistry: ARTipolo’s Milestone Exhibit at ARTablado Robinsons Antipolo

Join the jubilation as ARTipolo, a dynamic group of artists hailing from Antipolo, commemorates a decade of creativity and community impact with a captivating exhibition at ARTablado Robinsons Antipolo. Delve into the colorful journey of ARTipolo as they reflect on their achievements, challenges, and unwavering commitment to the arts.

PR ARtablado Presents Isang Dekada Artipolo Group

President Pol Mesina reminisces about ARTipolo’s remarkable journey, marked by moments of triumph and resilience. From prestigious gallery showcases to triumphs in art contests, ARTipolo has established itself as a driving force in the local art scene. What began as a regional organization has evolved into a diverse collective, welcoming artists from across the Philippines and around the globe.

He says that many key moments have taken place for ARTipolo. They have exhibited in prestigious galleries such as Pinto Art Museum, ARTablado in Robinsons Galleria and Robinsons Antipolo, Summit Ridge TaGAYTAY, and many others. Some of their members also emerged victorious in various art contests. And what was purely an organization focused on recruiting practitioners from the region has expanded, taking in members from Tuguegarao, Cagayan, Baguio, Pangasinan, Bohol, Manila, as well as Pinoy artists based in Japan, China, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.

    ARTablado

“At ang ARTipolo ngayon ay ’di lang puro painters, mayroon na ring sculptors,” Mesina shares.

Since its inception in 2014, ARTipolo Group Inc., has been at the forefront of the art and culture scene in Antipolo City. It is more than a social group; it is an advocacy. Its goals are to hone its members’ creative talents and, at the same time, promote Antipolo City’s tourism program.

    ARTablado

Robinsons Land ARTablado, as part of its Arts Month celebration, is giving the spotlight on this indefatigable art group by hosting its “Isang Dekada: Makulay na Paglalakbay sa Sining” exhibition, currently on view until Feb. 29 at the upper ground floor, Main Mall of Robinsons Antipolo.

The participating artists are: Amado Ongtauco, Ariel Purca, Bernardo Matias, Cha Mapaye Baladjay, Dolores van Duijvenbode, Edward Sato, Elizabeth Esguerra Castillo, Feng Eustaquio Villanueva, Fernando Regencia, Gem Yonzon Blanco, Genevieve V. Guevarra, Grace Gerona Evangelista, Isagani Cruz, Jayson Tejada, Jojo Figueroa Javier, Mac Baladjay, Mae Dy De Veyra, Maiya Balboa, Mark Anthony Navida, Maxi Cajayon Tungol, Nelson Francisco, Ninskidoodles, Rod Talde, Romel M. Reyes, Roland Tulay, Sonny Perida, Vivian Nocum Limpin, and Yam Tamayo.

    Artablado1

Why did Mesina and company decide to commemorate its 10th anniversary at ARTablado?

The people behind Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) believe in the ingenuity and artistry of Filipinos. RLC has allocated spaces at Robinsons malls in Antipolo and Ortigas to hold exhibitions for art practitioners who deserve to showcase their hard work, grit and perseverance. ARTablado’s impact has been instantaneous for members of the art community who have been pining for a platform where every artist — from individual practitioners to members of art groups — gets the chance to shine.

    Artablado2

“Malaki naitutulong ng art sa mga tao,” Mesina explains. “Nae-educate natin sila na mag-appreciate ng art — at ’di lang pang-mayaman pang ito. Alam na rin bigyan ng respeto ang mga gawa ng mga artists at ’di na lalaitin or gagawan ng ’di maganda ang mga obra.”

And art can be used in helping those who are less fortunate.

ARTipolo’s community service involvement is geared toward health, education, as well as the welfare of children, women and persons with disabilities and special needs. By organizing art exhibits and auctions, ARTipolo has been able to raise funds for its target beneficiaries.

“Isang Dekada” is for the benefit of PARClaran scholars of the PARC Foundation, with 30% of sales going directly to the foundation.

The PARC Foundation was established as a non-stock, non-profit organization in December 2015. It was founded by Wilmer Guido, a passionate 23-year-old whose dream was to put up a performing arts center to help people, especially the underprivileged youth and struggling local artists, fulfill their passions as well. Determined to achieve his dream, Wilmer formed his core team with like-minded friends Samsam Santiago and Issay Nodalo. As a first move, they repurposed an old office building into a performing arts hub. On June 1, 2016, they officially opened their doors to the public. Since then, The PARC Foundation has been a second home to numerous performing artists and groups who enjoy our creative spaces at the friendliest rates.

“Four times na namin sila naging beneficiary,” points out Mesina. “Kaya namin sila napili ay dahil pareho po ang advocacy ng ARTipolo (visual arts) and ng PARC Foundation (performing arts).” That is to encourage young hopefuls to express themselves in art — whether it is capturing a sun-dappled field on the cusp of harvest season with a palette of colors, or to weave the poetry of the human experience through the eloquence of body, tone or words.
