Star-Studded Voice Cast Bring a Clever Flock to Life in “The Sheep Detectives,” Opening May 6 in Cinemas

Get to know the all-star voice cast of The Sheep Detectives, an animated mystery featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Patrick Stewart. Showing in PH cinemas May 6.

A Mystery Wrapped in Wool

Quirky, clever, and full of heart—The Sheep Detectives is gearing up to charm Philippine audiences when it arrives in cinemas on May 6. Behind its playful premise lies an inventive approach to storytelling, where every sheep in the flock carries a personality shaped not just by script, but by performance.

Indeed, assembling a cast for an entire flock is no small challenge. Each character needed a distinct voice—one that could translate seamlessly into animation while still feeling grounded and expressive.

Turning Performances into Animation

What sets the film apart is how closely the animation mirrors the actors’ real-life expressions. While recording, the cast was filmed from multiple angles, allowing animators to study their facial movements and subtle gestures.

“We actually capture footage of the actors while they’re recording—multiple angles of their faces,” says animator Maya Storm Shrestha. “From that, we translate their physical performances into the animation in a way that balances character expression with how a sheep’s anatomy naturally works.”

As a result, the characters feel lively and authentic—each one reflecting the nuances of the actor behind the voice.

Meet the Flock’s Standout Personalities

Leading the investigation is Lily, voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Intelligent, composed, and deeply loyal, Lily takes charge after the sudden death of their beloved shepherd, George (Hugh Jackman).

“Lily’s loyalty to George is unbreakable,” says Louis-Dreyfus. “She’s taken what George modeled for her and applies it not only to solving the crime, but to being a kindhearted leader. In doing so, she really addresses her own fears and becomes a better leader.”

Then there’s Sir Ritchfield, the flock’s dignified elder, brought to life by Patrick Stewart. Known for his commanding presence, Stewart surprises with comedic timing that left the production team in stitches.

“One of my favorite pieces of voice acting in the movie comes from Patrick Stewart,” says Executive/Animation Producer Tyson Hesse. “We simply asked him to keep repeating the word ‘murderer’ with escalating intensity, and each time it just got funnier and funnier. It became a great unexpected running gag.”

A Dynamic Pair at the Center

Adding a layer of tension is Sebastian, voiced by Bryan Cranston. A late addition to the flock, Sebastian remains distant and skeptical—offering a sharp contrast to Lily’s optimism.

“Sebastian’s perspective is essential to good storytelling,” Cranston says. “You need contrasting viewpoints—something for the character to push against. Otherwise, it’s boring.”

Interestingly, Cranston and Louis-Dreyfus bring a natural chemistry to their roles, shaped by their shared past on Seinfeld. That familiarity translates into a compelling on-screen dynamic.

“Julia and I go way back—to Seinfeld, when our characters dated,” Cranston says. “When you know her voice and the vulnerability she brings, you can feel that rhythm between the characters. It becomes not just Lily and Sebastian, but something more—a relationship that gives the story real heart.”

Following the Clues

Inspired by their shepherd’s nightly readings of detective novels, the flock sets out to solve the mystery of his death. It’s a journey filled with humor, twists, and heartfelt moments—proving that even the most unlikely heroes can crack a case.
