In a major reveal during its press presentation in New York City, HBO has officially extended its commitment to the Game of Thrones universe—renewing both House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for new seasons every year through 2028.
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, confirmed the franchise’s multi-year future, emphasizing the global popularity and creative strength of the fantasy epic. Both shows will continue to premiere on HBO and stream exclusively via HBO Max.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Early Second Season Renewal
Even before its highly anticipated premiere on January 19, 2026, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already been renewed for a second season, set to debut in 2027.
This original half-hour drama shines a spotlight on the unlikely pairing of Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and his quirky companion Egg, in a heartwarming and adventurous tale set a century before Game of Thrones.
The season one cast features Peter Claffey, Dexter Sol Ansell, Daniel Ings, Bertie Carvel, and more, with George R. R. Martin co-creating the series alongside Ira Parker.

House of the Dragon: Season 4 Confirmed Before Season 3 Premiere
HBO’s fiery hit House of the Dragon is also blazing forward with a confirmed fourth season, scheduled to premiere in 2028. This comes ahead of the show’s third season, which will arrive in Summer 2026.
Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series dramatizes the turbulent history of House Targaryen. With dragons, dynasties, and betrayal at the heart of its story, the show has remained a ratings juggernaut and fan favorite.
Returning cast members include Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, and Steve Toussaint, with showrunner Ryan Condal and George R. R. Martin leading the creative charge.
A Shared Universe with Endless Potential
Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO Programming and Head of Drama Series and Films, celebrated the double renewal with confidence:
“We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe. Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be.”
Orsi also teased what’s ahead:
“In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have so beautifully captured. And this Summer, House of the Dragon is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”
