Charo Santos-Concio Stars in Groundbreaking Filipino Animated Series “Sun Chaser”

A radiant new adventure is rising from Philippine animation.

Award-winning actress Charo Santos-Concio lends her voice to “Sun Chaser,” a pioneering Filipino animated fantasy series that premieres its pilot episode for free on YouTube beginning Tuesday, June 23, at 12 noon.

Produced by Manila-based Toon City Animation and Playlab, the series marks a proud milestone for local animation. Developed and produced entirely in the Philippines, “Sun Chaser” brings Filipino mythology, homegrown artistry, and a deeply personal coming-of-age story to a global audience.

A Stellar Filipino and Filipino-American Voice Cast

Adding star power to its already exciting world, “Sun Chaser” features an impressive ensemble of Filipino and Filipino-American talents.

Joining Charo in the voice cast are Manny Jacinto, Liza Soberano, Eugene Cordero, Dingdong Dantes, Zia Dantes, J.R. De Guzman, and Star Magic artists AC Bonifacio and KD Estrada.

With this remarkable lineup, the series celebrates Filipino talent across generations, industries, and borders.

A Summer Vacation Turns Into a Mythic Mission

At the center of “Sun Chaser” is Jordan Santos, voiced by Manny Jacinto. He is an ordinary teenager who travels to the Philippines expecting a peaceful summer getaway.

Instead, his vacation takes a thrilling turn when a supernatural threat throws his island into chaos. As ancient powers begin to stir and hidden family secrets come to light, Jordan learns that his destiny is far greater than he ever imagined.

Soon, he must step into a dangerous new role: protecting the boundary between the human world and the spirit world.

Filled with wonder, danger, and heart, “Sun Chaser” explores self-discovery, family, courage, and the strength it takes to embrace one’s purpose.

Filipino Creators Bringing Pinoy Mythology to the World

The series was created by Filipino animation talents Bobby Pontillas and Bernard Badion, whose international experience adds world-class polish to the project.

Pontillas is a Disney Animation veteran with credits that include “Zootopia,” “Moana,” “Big Hero 6,” and “Wreck-It Ralph.” In 2018, he received an Academy Award nomination for the animated short film “One Small Step.”

Badion, meanwhile, has developed projects for major studios in Los Angeles, including “Transformers: EarthSpark.”

Together, the creators are building a fantasy universe rooted in Filipino culture, shaped by Filipino imagination, and crafted for viewers everywhere.

For a creator-owned Filipino production, the recognition signals a thrilling step forward for Philippine animation and its growing place on the world stage.

    Where to Watch “Sun Chaser”

Filipino viewers can watch the pilot episode of “Sun Chaser” for free on YouTube beginning Tuesday, June 23, at 12 noon.

  • Unlock Success with Engaging YouTube Shorts Tips

As internet trends evolve and short-form video takes center stage in the era of staying at home in the 2020s, YouTube introduced its own take on the format in 2021 – YouTube Shorts. This increasingly popular and exciting platform offers creators endless opportunities to connect with audiences. Here are some helpful tips for creating standout YouTube Shorts content:

    YouTube Shorts

Find your voice. With a wide range of topics available, from niche to mainstream, focus on the theme you’re most passionate about and build your audience and community around it.

Open strong. Use the first few seconds of your Short to grab viewers’ attention. Hook them in with something intriguing or compelling, whether it’s a question that promises an answer or a tease of something they won’t want to miss.

Get to the point. Even in short videos, it’s possible to lose focus. Edit your script well and get straight to the point, ensuring your content delivers what viewers want to see or hear.

Use trending music. When you use a sound for your Short, your content gets categorized under it. Naturally, that means using trending audio will increase the chances of more people watching your Short.

Promote your Shorts. To reach more viewers, promote your content on YouTube and other platforms. Collaborate with other creators or pitch your content to relevant outlets for earned media exposure. Consider using pinned comments to direct viewers to additional content on your channel.

Keep on experimenting and uploading content. As with long-form YouTube videos, success in the short-form format comes from consistently creating and improving your content. Be patient, and remember that success doesn’t happen overnight – even on YouTube.

  • Women YouTube content creators on “Breaking barriers online and beyond”

Hosted by Miss Trans Global 2020, actress, writer, and content creator Mela Habijan, the intimate gathering delved into the different stories of YouTube creators Lyqa Maravilla, Candy Pangilinan, Chezka Carandang, Jozelle Tech, as well as Habijan and Google Philippines Country Director Bernadette Nacario themselves.

Helping an entire society break barriers and achieve their full potential

    4 Lyqa Maravilla
    Lyqa Maravilla

Lyqa Maravilla was inspired to start creating educational content in 2015 by her own grandmother, who only managed to attain a Grade 3 education, as well as a group of women who could not pass the Civil Service Exam because they were also juggling their responsibilities as homemakers and mothers.

Eventually, more people found her content and were able to apply her lessons to other similar exams, and the momentum she gained from this support gave her the confidence to create more content on study hacks, workplace tips, and many more videos that simply were able to help Filipinos, especially those who were disadvantaged.

Not only were the barriers in many Filipinos’ ways broken, but more importantly, heavily disadvantaged women were now gaining an edge. “We’re able to help so many people get jobs—actually, our current average is three to five people, mostly women, reporting per day that they land jobs and get promoted,” said Maravilla.

In the same vein as Maravilla’s highly helpful educational content, commercial pilot Chezka Carandang’s YouTube content goes a long way in opening an entirely new horizon of possibilities for women.

Starting her own YouTube channel during the pandemic, Carandang—who had always wanted to be a pilot but had to figure out how to do it herself—simply wanted to share the process and her own story of how she managed to soar to the skies.

“That’s why I started my YouTube channel. Before, I was the one who had a hard time learning and becoming a pilot, now, I want to be the one aspiring pilots turn to to learn how to become a pilot,” said Carandang.

“It all started with one video on how to become a pilot, and after that, I was able to build a community. I get so many comments saying ‘Chezka, I became a pilot because of you. I didn’t know it was possible to become a pilot.’”

YouTube as a way to inspire

Beyond education, because of the multitude of diverse voices on the platform, for many people YouTube is also a source of inspiration.

Take for example Jozelle Tech, a CEO, entrepreneur, consultant, and content creator who also has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, leaving her to rely on a wheelchair—a natural barrier.

Being differently abled has certainly not stopped Tech from doing what she does best, which is helping businesses reach their full potential. Her YouTube content generally focuses on business,  branding, and marketing tips and advice.

“These physical challenges are a huge barrier in living a full life. What’s harder is that I’m part of two marginalized groups–I’m a woman bound to a wheelchair. As a child, I had so many dreams, but people would always tell me no, don’t be ambitious. But I am ambitious, and I couldn’t accept that this was going to be my life. I couldn’t walk, so that’s why I decided to run a business,” said Tech defiantly.

Meanwhile, comedienne and actress Candy Pangilinan, whose YouTube channel features her daily life raising her son Quentin, who has special needs, found herself becoming an inspiration to fellow mothers in similar situations.

“I never imagined people would come to me wherever I am, telling me, ‘Ms. Candy, thank you so much for what you do. I learn from your vlog and follow what you do on your content,’” said Pangilinan.

“The support is overwhelming. People asked me what I do with Quentin, so I asked him if we can show the internet our regular lives. Eventually, it grew. Now people are asking, people are coming to me. Honestly, my burden 19 years ago has become my blessing today. YouTube really helped me a lot in developing my son.”

    1 Mela Habijan
    Mela Habijan

As for Habijan herself, who educates people on all things transgender on her YouTube channel, credits the platform for the full realization of her hosting dreams, as she announced she will be hosting shows on YouTube including Rainbow Bench, a YouTube-first talk show focused on LGBTQIA+ stories and allyship.

“It’s my dream to be like Oprah,” said Habijan. “There are so many possibilities being realized by YouTube. I cannot fathom the fact that we’ve really neared this age where everyone can. And we all can, right now.”

2 Google Philippines Country Director Bernadette Nacario
Google Philippines Country Director Bernadette Nacario

Sharing her very own breaking barriers story, Google Philippines Country Director Bernadette Nacario said, “I’ve been in tech for over 30 years now and my journey in the industry is not easy! Back in the early days of tech, there was a time when I was the only woman in the boardroom full of men. It was daunting at first but I didn’t let this hold me back! I stood my ground and believed in myself. I showed them that women can and women will! Women’s ability to lead not just with data but with empathy makes us effective leaders.”

  • Here’s How Google & YouTube will Support the Philippine Elections

As part of an ongoing commitment to connect voters to timely information and help protect the integrity of the Philippines elections, Google and YouTube announced a series of product features, partnerships, and programs.

    Raising authoritative election information

As Election Day approaches, millions of people in the Philippines will be turning to YouTube to get the latest election news, and learn more about candidates and the voting process. To connect people to authoritative election-related information, YouTube provides a variety of Election Information Panels:

    ●      Candidate information panel: When YouTube viewers in the Philippines search for the names of President and Vice President candidates, a relevant candidate information panel will show at the top of their search results. This panel highlights information on the candidates, such as their political party and what office they’re running for. Information about candidates and parties is sourced from vetted, non-partisan, third-party sources.

    ●      How to vote information panel: To help people learn more about the voting process,an information panel surfaces on YouTube for all searches pertaining to “how to vote”. These panels will link to the Commissions on Elections’ (COMELEC) website featuring relevant materials, requirements, and the step-by-step of the voting process.

    Google

This is part of the existing portfolio of features that YouTube has rolled out in the country, aimed at raising authoritative information. These include Top News and Breaking News shelves for fast-moving, breaking news events; information panels that indicate funding sources from publishers that receive public or government funding; and information panels giving topical context that links to third party sources such as Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica, for videos on a number of well-established topics that can be prone to misinformation including the Holocaust, the Apollo moon landing, and Martial Law in the Philippines.

Speaking about the election information panels in the country, Emily Moxley, Vice President for Product Management at YouTube said, “Political news and events can be subject to misinformation, so the availability of authoritative information sources is crucial. Over the last few years, we’ve made deep investments to make YouTube a more reliable source for news, while also maintaining the openness of the platform. Our work is ongoing and we are committed to making YouTube a vibrant and safe community for a healthy political discourse as well as help protect the integrity of elections.”

YouTube’s Community Guidelines apply equally to everyone. From February 2021 to January 2022, the platform removed over 400,000 videos uploaded from the Philippines for Community Guidelines. YouTube elections misinformation policies prohibit content that:

    ●      Misleads voters about the time, place, means, or eligibility requirements for voting, or false claims that could materially discourage voting

    ●      Advances false claims related to the technical eligibility requirements for current political candidates and sitting elected government officials to serve in office

    ●      Encourages others to interfere with democratic processes

    ●      Contains hacked information, the disclosure of which may interfere with democratic processes

In addition, YouTube’s systems are designed to limit the spread of borderline content and harmful misinformation. Today, consumption of borderline content that comes from its recommendations is significantly below 1% globally.

    Supporting fact-checking initiatives

The Google News Initiative (GNI) supports Meedan’s #FactsFirstPH, a coalition of more than 100 groups, including news organizations such as Rappler, civil society organizations, business groups, faith-based communities, research groups, and legal organizations to fight misinformation ahead of the Philippine elections. The GNI has also partnered with the University of the Philippines (UP) to launch a journalist training series and provided support to tsek.ph, a collaborative fact-checking project led by UP.

    Investing in media literacy programs

Google has been investing in and supporting local media literacy programs to teach people how to identify trusted information. These include the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication’s “a day in the life” video series and training for news literacy, and CANVAS’ #YOUTHink magazine. Google.org also made a grant of $1.5 million to help the ASEAN Foundation expand media literacy education in ASEAN member communities including the Philippines. The ASEAN Foundation has also developed a digital literacy comic book available in Filipino.

“Fighting misinformation is important to Google and it takes the whole of society working together to address it. We will continue to forge meaningful partnerships with the media and community groups to help people access the right information so they can make an informed vote in the upcoming elections,” said Irene Jay Liu, Google APAC News Lab Lead.

“Part of COMELEC’s mission is to empower voters with accurate, relevant and timely information. We laud Google for taking the important steps in helping Filipinos access authoritative information that is essential for an informed electorate,” said James Jimenez, Commissions on Elections Director for Education and Information.
