  • MOVIE REVIEW: A Problem with Prequels; how ‘Wonka’ plays it safe

There’s a trend in the Hollywood that has been going on for decades now; focusing on prequels of villains and attempting to give them nuance. There’s Angelina Jolie’s turn as ‘Maleficent,’ it reimagines the story as if it were told incorrectly. Or like Emma Stone’s turn as ‘Cruella,’ who does not shy away from her evil tendencies but paints her as an anti-hero to an even more nefarious enemy in that story. Just recently, ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ presents us with the origin story of President Snow, the main antagonist of ‘The Hunger Games’ trilogy. While it does not shy away from his deeds, it does try to paint him as a sympathetic character.

While Willy Wonka from Roald Dahl’s book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’ is not necessarily evil, there is a sinister flair to him. I’m more familiar with the 1971 movie ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ directed by Mel Stuart and starred Gene Wilder. Willy Wonka is an eccentric, to put it mildly. Children have been hurt or even perished in his factory on the day of the visit and he remains emotionally unaffected by these – as if the children’s weaknesses and moral failings made them deserving of such punishment.

It’s this characterisation of the title character – which I was told, that sinister quality, is taken to the extreme in th 2005 movie adaptation by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp – that creates a disconnect with the newly released prequel ‘Wonka’ directed by Paul King and starring Timothee Chalamet. Whereas all previous materials on Willy Wonka creates a dark and mysterious character, Chalamet’s ‘Wonka’ is very light-hearted and friendly. There is a touch of whimsy on all versions but while the Wonka of ‘Wonka’ leans towards the cutesy and relatable, all other versions are shifting closer towards dark or sinister.

There is nothing about Willy Wonka in ‘Wonka’ that even closely hints at the person he will become in ‘Charlie and the Cholate Factory’ or any of its movie adaptations. And that becomes emblematic of this growing trend. In order to milk any franchise or IP of its monetary value, they will extend any character’s narrative, both for prequels and sequels with the hopes that the familiarity of the character would ensure box office success. Throw in a huge star into the mix and they are hoping for a healthy returns in ticket sales.

What this does, though, is that it removes the mystery from that of the audience. A lot of the magic of these narratives – especially from the dark, twisted minds of a children’s book author like Roald Dahl – comes from the stories that don’t make it to the books. What caused Willy Wonka to become the eccentric, anti-social chocolatier that he is, who doesn’t mind punishing children in severe ways for having the worst qualities of being a child.

It is the parts that are not shown and not talked about that activates the imagination, that allows us to wonder and dream. But an exercise like ‘Wonka’ or any of the other films I mentioned at the start of this critique is not interested in wonder or mystery. They want everything explained because it is what they think the audience wants, and so it will sell.

So ‘Wonka’ is about how Willy Wonka got his start in the chocolate business. From the onset, he’s already whimsical and flighty as a character. He already also has magic – though unexplained – and instead it becomes a story about how he beats a chocolate monopoly run by a cartel. It’s about breaking oppressive systems by being just as sneaky – bending the rules because those in power don’t play fair. It sets itself as an underdog story complete with an orphan girl, Noodle (played by Calah Lane) and ragtag of other people were cheated out of their freedom by a sinister proprietress of a bed and breakfast (played by Olivia Colman).

Like any material based on a Roald Dahl book, the villains are dastardly and cruel, and they don’t play fair. But without any real struggle, Willy Wonka and his ragtag band of misfits go toe to toe with both Colman’s Mrs Scrubbs and the chocolate cartel. What adds to the disconnect of the whole story on Willy Wonka is that this is a musical with only one really good, proper song. There’s even a song that attempts to rhyme different words with chocolate and instead of coming off as charming, it sounds annoying instead; and other than that, the chocolate is not symbolic of anything other than that of childhood dreams. Wonka is dead set on making it big as a chocolatier because of that connection with his mom but the film fails to create any real connection with the symbol (chocolates and chocolate-making) with the people around him.

The chocolates themselves are just a means to an end. What the film manages to establish is his connection with his band in the same struggles that they share but it has nothing to do with the chocolate itself. For a film as magical and whimsical as this, it would be nice if the chocolate actually meant something other than a setting or any interchangeable McGuffin. ‘Wonka’ is big and loud and wears its heart on its sleeve. It is tailor-made as a movie made for the entire family. It has not set out to tell us anything new nor is it in any danger of upsetting anyone or offending anyone’s sensibilities and as such, it carries very little mystery or wonder or any real sense of magic.

  • Embark on a Sweet Journey to Nostalgia: Hugh Grant and Rowan Atkinson Bring ’90s Magic to “Wonka”

Director Paul King, the visionary behind Wonka couldn’t have been happier with the cast he assembled for this sugary tale led by the charismatic Timothée Chalamet. He shares, “I felt so blessed to have been able to assemble this cast,” says King of the talented group of actors and actresses he got to work with in “Wonka,” led by Timothée Chalamet in the title role. “There were so many extraordinary people who were prepared to come and work with me. It felt like every time I asked whether somebody would be willing to do it and they said ‘yes,’ I felt like the kid in the candy store.”

One of the people who said yes to King was a hero of his, Mr. Bean himself, Rowan Atkinson. “Rowan is one of my longtime comedy heroes and it was an honor and delight to work with him,” says King. “He plays a priest at the city cathedral [it’s not his first time in clerical attire] and he has to answer a phone with the words “Hello, pulpit!” It’s the sort of line only Rowan could deliver!

Another role King felt only one person could portray according to his imagination was that of the Oompa Loompa. According to King, the only voice that came to his head every time he came across the Oompa Loompas while reading Roald Dahl’s classic belonged to that of another ’90s favorite: Hugh Grant.

    1

“Paul and I were always in contact vaguely since ‘Paddington 2,’ and then I think he just emailed me one day and said he was doing ‘Wonka,’” shares Grant about how his “Paddington 2” director offered him a role in “Wonka.” “He has been nuts about Roald Dahl since he was a kid, in exactly the same way that he was obsessed with Michael Bond and ‘Paddington,’ ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ was one of his favorite books. And then he explained how much he loved the Oompa Loompas in those early films, particularly for being so unpleasant. And he said, ‘Whenever I think of someone really curmudgeonly and unpleasant, I immediately think of you.’ And so that was his pitch.”

To create his version of the iconic Oompa Loompas, Grant “ended up reading the book and watching the earlier films,” shares the actor. “And then I thought, ‘How do we make this different?’ But I definitely thought the key was to keep the sort of negativity and anger, the curmudgeonly old bastard element of the Oompa Loompa. This is my speciality. The Oompa Loompa in this film is propelled by those things, but also by a sort of sadness and a kind of loneliness. He’s been ostracized, chucked out of his homeland and his home tribe for letting them down. And he’s on a mission to try and win back their favors.”

“Wonka,” produced by David Heyman (Harry Potter films) and which also stars Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins and Calah Lane, opens in Philippine cinemas, including in IMAX, December 6. #WonkaMovie

  • ‘Wonka’ is About Bringing a Light Into a World That is in Desperate Need of It,” Says Timothée Chalamet

Timothée Chalamet is proud to be a part of “Wonka.”

All the singing and dancing aside, Chalamet, who plays the beloved chocolatier in the film, is most proud of being part of “a joyous movie, that is about bringing a light into a world that is in desperate need of it,” he says.

    JP photomain WONKA

When Chalamet read “Wonka,” he did feel “the classic thespian challenge—the singing, the dancing.” But when he thinks about the film’s reason for being, “it is to bring joy into the world,” he says. “It’s to encourage dreaming; to encourage the dreamers to continue dreaming; to encourage declaring yourself as you are, who you are, without question. It’s to declare that to share in kindness and enthusiasm is to paint a way forward, not only for yourself, but for those around you. It’s about community, and it’s about community surviving in spaces of erosion. It’s about light and love. I’m so proud to have been a part of that.”

Wonka, an intoxicating mix of magic and music, mayhem and emotion, tells the story of Willy Wonka’s younger days, when he was just starting out as a chocolate-maker hoping to share his chocolate with the world by setting up shop at the cathedral of candy known as the Galeries Gourmet—with nothing but a few sovereigns (coins) and a hat full of dreams. A prequel to the 2005 hit Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka, based on the beloved character created by best-selling children’s book author Roald Dahl, is written and directed by Paul King (Paddington films) and produced by David Heyman (the Harry Potter movies).

    WON D38 00132r

To make sure he does the iconic character of Willy Wonka justice, Chalamet worked hard in preparation for the role, especially for the singing and dancing bits. “I had a lot of singing and vocal training with our head of the music department, the British James Taylor, not the other James Taylor,” shares Chalamet. “Also, there was a lot of dance training with Chris Gattelli, a fellow New Yorker and a fantastic choreographer. Then, repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition. It was smart, because by the time the movie started, the physical stamina was there.

“And I have to say that this was the most physically challenging project I’ve ever been on. This was every scene. There’s the enthusiasm of the character coupled with the fact that there isn’t a scene that’s really static. That’s not only great for the story, but it was also a great lesson as an actor. I was grateful to have that run up because of the shape I was able to get into.”

Watch Chalamet talk about “Becoming Wonka” in this featurette:

It helped that he had a great co-star in Calah Lane, who plays Noodle, a smart, cynical, sardonic young orphan who befriends Willy. Chalamet was very much impressed with his younger co-star. “It’s a huge endeavor to be on a project when you’re this young. I was working as an actor at this age, but not on things this long—maybe a day or two here or there. She really has her head on her shoulders; she’s a fantastic actress,” says Chalamet.

Lucky for Lane, there were days on set when she wasn’t the only kid. And Chalamet treasured such days too because they brought about a very positive energy. “The days when we had a lot of kids around, it brought a sincerity, an earnestness and a joy to the set, especially when you’re wearing the burgundy coat and you see the way people are reacting… It was great.”

Get ready for your sweet holiday treat. Wonka opens in Philippine cinemas December 6, one week ahead of the U.S. A perfect Christmas indeed!

  • Director Paul King Calls ‘Wonka’ the Perfect Christmas Movie

Paul King, the visionary behind the Paddington series, brings his childhood fascination with Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” to life in “”Wonka.” The director recalls how Dahl’s story captivated him as a child, its blend of comedy, magic, and emotional depth resonating through the years. “I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” says King. “I read it again and again until the pages fell out of the cover. I remember loving the wild comedy, all the crazy characters, and the magic and mayhem of the chocolate factory.” Now, King presents a fresh take on this beloved tale, focusing on Willy Wonka’s early adventures in chocolate-making.

A Dynamic Duo: King and Heyman’s Creative Synergy

Years later, King would read it again from the perspective of an adult – and he found new things to love about the story! “When David [Heyman, producer] mentioned the idea of making a Wonka movie, I read it again and realized it also has an incredibly rich, almost Dickensian emotional core,” shares the director. “Charlie is such a kind, decent little boy and his family’s poverty causes them such suffering. The fact he goes on to inherit the factory, a more wonderful gift than he could ever have dreamt, had me in floods of tears – and the prospect of trying to make a film which captured Dahl’s spirit was too exciting to turn down.”

Wonka tells the story of Willy Wonka’s younger days, when he was just starting out as a chocolate-maker hoping to share his chocolate with the world by setting up shop at the cathedral of candy known as the Galeries Gourmet – with nothing but a few sovereigns (coins) and a hat full of dreams. A prequel to the 2005 hit Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka is written by King and produced by David Heyman, himself no stranger to magical worlds, having produced all Harry Potter movies.

Working with Heyman is “a true creative partnership,” says King. “I love David’s ideas, his taste and sensibility. He’s my first audience and the only person as tough on the film as I am. We share the same aspirations, and the same pain when we feel we’ve fallen short. He’s a relentless perfectionist, and not only supports me every step of the way.”

    A Star-Studded Ensemble

The film’s genius filmmaking team is complemented by a very talented ensemble cast, led by Timothée Chalamet as Willy Wonka. “Timothée gives an absolutely extraordinary performance,” says King. “Willy is strange and unnerving, funny and charming but with a glint of steel, and Timothée somehow keeps all these plates spinning at once. He needed to be able to sing and dance and deliver a very carefully choreographed performance, yet also dig deep into his emotions, and I was constantly amazed.”

In the film, Willy has a very much-needed friend in Noodle, played by a “brilliant young actress called Calah Lane.” Supporting but no less whimsical characters are played by a powerhouse cast that includes Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Keegan-Michael Key, Hugh Grant and Rowan Atkinson. “Rowan is one of my longtime comedy heroes and it was an honor and delight to work with him,” says King of the actor beloved the world over for playing Mr. Bean.

Watch Noodle in this “Try One” clip from the film:

Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa?

In an unexpected yet delightful casting choice, Hugh Grant portrays an Oompa Loompa. King explains that Grant’s voice inspired this decision, envisioning him as a scornful yet humorous character “The Oompa Loompas don’t have much dialogue in the books but they do have these long songs where they take an almost gleeful pleasure in the demise of all the ghastly children who tour the factory,” says King. “They’re so funny and biting and scornful, and as I was reading them, Hugh’s voice kept coming into my head. From there, it wasn’t a huge step to go, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny to see him eighteen inches high with bright green hair and orange skin?’ It was perfect.” The result is an amusing portrayal of an iconic character, promising to add a unique twist to the film.

Watch Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa in this “Funny Little Man” clip from the film:

    A Feast for the Senses

Of course, the movie wouldn’t be complete without the chocolates! Of the many chocolate creations in Wonka, does King have any favorites? “Well, the Hoverchocs are delicious,” shares the director. “Sadly, they don’t literally make you fly, but we had our very own chocolate maker on the team, Gabrielle Cugno, who made the most exquisite creations. And I can personally vouch for the fact they are the most delicious chocolates I’ve ever had. You bite into them and there’s that perfect chocolatey snap, and as they melt in your mouth, you taste more and more delicate flavors. My favorite part of the whole process was tasting her chocolate (which I did far more often than was technically necessary). I think I gained about fifty pounds.”
