MOVIE REVIEW: Wicked: For Good Is Ariana Grande’s Movie and a Showcase of Her Acting Range

With the first film, Wicked, primarily tracking Elphaba’s (Cynthia Erivo) narrative arc, growing from a wide-eyed girl who admires the Wizard into an empowered woman willing to battle for truth and to stop oppression at the cost of her own reputation, the second film shifts the focus to Glinda (Ariana Grande). Glinda awakens from her privileged life in an unjust world that caters to and protects her and people like her. The shift in protagonists is a smart move, as there’s little new to do with Elphaba’s character. Unfortunately, in order to keep Elphaba’s presence on equal terms with Glinda, Wicked: For Good suffers from a messy plot that tends to meander before reaching its finale.

Set five years after the first film, Wicked: For Good finds Elphaba demonized as the Wicked Witch of the West, despite her efforts to free the animals from slavery and from losing their voices. Glinda, on the other hand, has become a sort of symbol for all that is good in Oz, a ruse perpetrated by the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh).

    Wicked: For Good

To continue distracting the people of Oz from the growing tyranny of the Wizard and Morrible, they announce Glinda’s engagement to Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), who is now the Captain of the Wizard’s Guard. While he is determined to let Glinda find happiness, he knows he is still in love with Elphaba. Elphaba must muster her newfound magic and rally any allies in the land to help battle the Wizard and his propaganda, but her greatest ally could also be her most terrible foe: Glinda.

Michelle Yeoh is Madame Morrible in WICKED FOR GOOD, directed by Jon M. Chu.

Lucky for Wicked: For Good, the film nails its landing. It is at its best when Erivo and Grande share scenes together. Their friendship – both onscreen and off – is what really sells the whole movie. It’s the heart and soul of the piece. We follow the awakening of these two powerful women to an unjust society and how they strive to make things better as two different people from two very different backgrounds. While the first film was able to fully realise the devastating force of oppression by showing it through the character of Dr. Dillamond.

Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba in Wicked For Good
Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba in WICKED FOR GOOD, directed by Jon M. Chu.

In Wicked: For Good, this aspect is not given as much emphasis and so the struggle that Elphaba takes – freedom for the animals – and what Glinda will eventually discover on her own.

    Wicked For Good
L to R: Bowen Yang is Pfannee, Bronwyn James is Shenshen, and Ariana Grande is Glinda in WICKED FOR GOOD, directed by Jon M. Chu.

This is where the film gets messy. The whole first hour of the film is set up to work on Easter eggs for the film, connecting it to TheWizard of Oz, the film the book is inspired from. Instead of showing us more of the oppression, to remind us exactly what Elphaba is fighting for, the film takes more time to introduce to us to the Cowardly Lion (voiced by Colman Domingo), showing us the origin of the Tin Man, bring in Dorothy, and tidying up the stories of Nessarose (Marissa Bode) and Boq (Ethan Slater), two characters whose presence lacks any sort of nuance or layer that would make them interesting outside of their being plot devices for Elphaba.

    Wicked For Good

There’s even a lovely little scene between the Wizard and Glinda, featuring the lovely song number Wonderful, where they try to convince Elphaba to work with them. But it sort of drags on much too long within the story as the focus should be more on Grande as Glinda.

    Wicked For Good
L to R: Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Jonathan Bailey is Fiyero in WICKED FOR GOOD, directed by Jon M. Chu.

While Erivo and Bailey are terrific as Elphaba and Fiyero, it is Grande who truly shines, showcasing the full spectrum of her acting range in this movie. From her choices in singing to the way she delicately telegraphs her character’s shifts and discoveries through tiny gestures and looks, Grande elevates the character and really adds so much depth and soul to Glinda. The film is anchored by her transformation and it’s what drives the film forward. Without a strong emphasis on the oppression of the animals and the freedom the Elphaba is fighting for and Glinda is waking up to, the whole of Wicked: For Good rests upon the dynamics between the two protagonists’ relationship. That’s what is most enjoyable here.

    Wicked For Good
L to R: Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Ariana Grande is Glinda in WICKED FOR GOOD, directed by Jon M. Chu.

So that when they finally sing For Good, which we all know is coming, it hits with all the emotional resonance the film can provide, fulfilling a promise that was made as far back as the first movie. This is how the film nails its landing, despite its messy first two acts. While Wicked and Wicked: For Good do great work in showing how fascism and autocracy work, with the second film highlighting the importance and power of public imagery and propaganda in swaying the minds of the people – the true heart and soul of both films lies in the relationship between two very unlikely friends. It’s the reason why I can forgive Wicked: For Good for its adherence to the source material – both the musical and the throwbacks to the original film and book – because I was truly touched and moved by the friendship Erivo and Grande has breathed into Elphaba and Glinda.

“It’s wild. It’s unbridled. It feels really, really epic,” That’s how Cynthia Erivo—our fierce Elphaba—describes the energy behind Wicked: For Good, the emotional conclusion to the beloved story of Oz’s iconic witches.

Helmed by visionary director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), this highly anticipated finale picks up where 2024’s smash hit Wicked left off—only now, the stakes are even higher, the emotions deeper, and the magic more intense than ever.

Watch the Behind-The-Scenes First Look Here:

    An Emotional Farewell to Oz

Mark your calendars: Wicked: For Good lands exclusively in Philippine theaters on November 19.

The Story Ends, The Legacy Lives

“And now whatever way our stories end, I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend.”

The global phenomenon that redefined Broadway for a new generation finally reaches its heart-racing, tear-jerking, utterly unforgettable conclusion. Following last year’s Wicked—which soared past expectations with 10 Academy Award® nominations and over $750 million in global box office—Wicked: For Good returns with the original creative powerhouse and all-star cast.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande (as Glinda) reprise their roles, backed by producers Marc Platt and David Stone, and executive producers Stephen Schwartz, Dana Fox, Winnie Holzman, and more. The screenplay, penned by Holzman and Fox, adapts the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, while music and lyrics come courtesy of the legendary Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, The Prince of Egypt).

A Finale Made to be Felt

Drenched in heart and dazzling visuals, Wicked: For Good isn’t just a follow-up—it’s the full-circle moment fans have waited for. With a score by John Powell and Schwartz and direction by Chu, this is a cinematic crescendo worthy of Oz’s magical legacy.

Pinoy Craftsmanship Shines in “Wicked” – Harvy Santos and the Film’s Iconic Hats

Filipino talent takes center stage in the Land of Oz as Harvy Santos, Senior Milliner for the film adaptation of Wicked, creates its most iconic hats.

    Erivo Elphaba

From Ballet to Millinery: Harvy Santos’ Journey

Harvy Santos’ path to becoming a renowned milliner wasn’t a straight one. “I originally came from the Philippines,” Santos shares, recounting his humble beginnings. His fascination with costumes began at just six years old, but it wasn’t until years later, as a ballet dancer with the Hong Kong Ballet, that he began to actively pursue this passion.

“I used to be a ballet dancer. All of the money that I got from dancing, every payday I would buy myself books on garment construction and costume design.” Santos recalls. He eventually left dance behind and moved to the UK, where he honed his craft at Kensington and Chelsea colleges.

His creative ingenuity quickly garnered attention—his award-winning hats have graced the pages of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and other prestigious fashion publications.

    Crafting Empowerment in Wicked

Now as Senior Milliner for Wicked, Santos breathes life into headpieces that symbolize empowerment and strength. “Millinery is like sculpture, we started playing with materials, to experiment with shapes,” he says. “Until this post, it’s still fascinating, it’s still challenging, and I quite like those challenges because I get to be inventive and creative with it.”

Each hat Santos creates helps shape the magical world of Wicked, a tale of friendship, courage, and self-discovery. Reflecting on his role, he says, “Every day, I’m part of what I have accomplished, and knowing the fact that you are contributing on an epic film, that’s very exhilarating.”

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Bigger and Better Than the Musical, ‘Wicked’ Hits All the Right Notes

MOVIE REVIEW: Bigger and Better Than the Musical, ‘Wicked’ Hits All the Right Notes

I’ll be honest and say that I was not expecting to like ‘Wicked.’ As I kept hearing news after news about it – the film being part one of two, the total running time of the film is longer than the stage musical (roughly two hours and forty minutes), and others – I was becoming more and more apprehensive about it. The only thing that I was excited about was the casting of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Erivo is a fantastic actress and a damn good singer. If anyone can bring that character to the screen, it’s her. It doesn’t help that other than ‘Defying Gravity’ and ‘Good,’ I’m not a fan of the musical as well.

So it was to my utter surprise that as ‘Wicked’ part 1 ended, I found myself in tears.

    Wicked Elphaba 2
Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu
    Wicked 2551 D035 00407R
L to R: Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Ariana Grande is Glinda in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu

With director Jon M. Chu at the helm, ‘Wicked’ manages to find its heart despite the overindulgent (not a bad thing) design of the world that leans a lot towards the psychedelic and the absurd. By not being grounded visually, it allows for the film to take very whimsical approaches to character reactions and makes it believable. In a world as colorful and extraordinary as Oz, how is a baby being born green such an affront to everyone’s taste? But it works because the world in itself feels off-kilter and kooky.

    Wicked 2551 TP1 00016
L to R: Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Ariana Grande is Glinda in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu

‘Wicked’ follows the first act of the musical of the same name (which is based on the book by Gregory Maguire). With an extended running time, the film takes it time to really establish the characters and their complex dynamic, which is the heart and soul of the film. It’s the story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), a woman who was born with green skin. Shunned by her family and society, she has lived quietly, taking it all in and never letting any of it out. Deep within her is a power that she cannot understand, and it gets her a seat at Shiz University where her sister is enrolled. There she meets Galinda (Ariana Grande), and they quickly become enemies but as they get to know each other better, they become the best of friends.

    Wicked Elphaba Glinda3
L to R: Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Ariana Grande is Glinda in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu

The bulk of ‘Wicked’ comes from the shift in the dynamic of Elphaba and Galinda’s (who later becomes Glinda) relationship. Gravitating around their friendship are stories about how the talking animals are slowly being persecuted and a handsome prince, Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) also comes into the picture to become the love interest of both women. These subplots serve to push and pull on the two girls as they begin to realise something about each other and themselves that forces them to make massive decisions by the end of the film that will change the course of their lives forever.

    Wicked Glinda
Ariana Granda is Glinda in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu

At the heart of it, ‘Wicked’ is a story about discrimination. Elphaba is shunned and ridiculed for the color of the skin and Cynthia Erivo embodies this so magnificently. Unlike iterations of this I’ve seen on YouTube or when I saw the play at the CCP by the Australian touring cast, Erivo’s Elphaba is a young woman who is forced to be mature by her oppression. She is wound up and tense. She’s guarded. But deep inside that hard exterior, is a young girl looking for acceptance and belonging.

    Wicked DrDillamond
Peter Dinklage voices Dr. Dillamond in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu

It’s why when she becomes close with one of her professors who is a talking goat (Peter Dinklage), she softens, and the effect is palpable on screen. When her and Galinda’s relationship turns towards friendship, that vulnerability suddenly becomes visible. And when the plot brings her to a point when she discovers the power that is deep within her, leading up to the showstopping ‘Defying Gravity,’ Erivo becomes a raging storm. The performance is one-of-a-kind, and it helps that she can really sing like the best of them.

    Wicked Glinda31
Ariana Granda is Glinda in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu

Grande is a natural comedienne. She has great timing and a sincerity that makes her Galinda feel as genuine as she is oblivious to the larger things that are at play. It’s her chemistry with Erivo that helps secure the film’s narrative into stable ground that allows the film to take flight at its finale. But while Grande’s performance is strong and a definite crowd-pleaser, it really feels like a reverent interpretation of Kristen Chenoweth’s portrayal of Galinda. It’s no secret that Grande has been in love with this show since she first saw it at ten years old. I feel that her attack on the character was to do the best version of Chenoweth’s Galinda rather than doing something uniquely her own. It’s not a fault, really, because she did a great job, but I was hoping for something different.

    Wicked Oz Morrible Large

Bailey is obviously having a lot of fun, showing off his range and managing to turn his Prince Fiyero into a bisexual sex symbol. He brings a wave of teen-filled desire into this PG-13 movie and makes it a little dangerous, which is always fun. Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Peter Dinklage are always reliable and help create a fully realised psychedelic world that has a great big heart and a strong message to finding your own voice and taking a stand.

    Wicked ShenShen Pfannee
L to R: Bronwyn James is Shenshen and Bowen Yang is Pfannee in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu
    Wicked Oz
WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu

The almost-three hour running time goes by so fast and you never really feel it. I am absolutely shocked that ‘Wicked’ is as good as it is with my only fear that Part Two will not be able to match the narrative highs that this film manages to attain.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Open Up About Their Bond, Voice Training, and Matching Tattoos in “Wicked”

The bond between Glinda and Elphaba comes to life in the much-anticipated film adaptation of “Wicked,” with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo capturing the heart of their characters. Together, they share a transformative journey in this retelling of a classic tale.

Finding the Perfect Glinda and Elphaba

The casting process for Wicked was anything but ordinary. For director Jon M. Chu and his team, finding the right actresses to embody Glinda and Elphaba wasn’t just about talent; it was about discovering a unique connection. In a memorable gathering at Chu’s home, Grande and Erivo performed an impromptu rendition of the iconic song “For Good.” As Chu recalls, “Stephen went to the piano and said to Cynthia and Ari, ‘Shall we sing, ‘For Good’?” Chu says. “Cynthia and Ari didn’t rehearse it. They’d never done it together. They sang it, and my four-year-old daughter’s jaw dropped to the floor. No one has ever seen two powerhouses like this before. It’s been beautiful to see how well connected they are.”

Ariana Grande’s Deep Connection to Glinda

Grande’s path to becoming Glinda was a decade-long dream. “I had been chasing producer Marc Platt down for about ten years, wondering when this movie was going to happen and when I would have the opportunity to audition,” she shares. For Grande, embodying Glinda became a personal journey. “Spending this time with Glinda has been a profound journey of self-discovery and healing for me,” Grande reflects. “It’s remarkable how embodying her character and embracing self-trust has brought about such personal growth.”

Her preparation was rigorous, involving vocal retraining with her coach, Eric Vetro. I had to retrain my voice to sing more classically and operatically, which is my range but a style I hadn’t done since I was much younger. It takes the chords a while to reacclimate, like any other muscle, which requires a lot of training.”

Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba: The Power of Resilience

As soon as Erivo auditioned, the production team knew they had found their Elphaba. An Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony winner, Erivo’s portrayal brought a fierce vulnerability to the iconic character. “To have Cynthia Erivo, a woman of color, play a woman who is green makes all the world of difference,” Chu says. “When she sang ‘Defying Gravity,’ she blew the roof off. We were stunned. As soon as Cynthia left the room, we said, ‘our search is finally done.’”

Erivo’s dedication was clear in her training and her approach to the role. She says, “I hope that this joy keeps growing. I hope we find something to spark joy in every day. This was a long process, and I knew that it would get hard sometimes. But I knew, even on those days, that we would find something that makes us love and reconnect to what brought us here.”

A Lasting Bond Through Ink and Memories

As a symbol of their journey together, Grande and Erivo got matching tattoos. “We got tattoos together,” Grande says. “I got an ‘E’ for Elphaba in a heart on the back of my leg and she had a little ‘G’ for Glinda on the back of hers.” Erivo says that their bond is anchored by a sense of joyful exploration. “I hope that we don’t lose our love of play,” Erivo says. “That’s something that I really enjoyed—this need to keep wanting to learn and discover. Ariana and I used that to make these beings as humane and full as possible. When we worked together, something special happened.”
