Prepare to be on the edge of your seat this October 20, 2023, as Lionsgate Play releases “Kandahar,” a riveting action drama that promises high tension and relentless excitement. This gripping action-drama film follows CIA Black Ops agent Tom Harris, played by Gerard Butler (Greenland, Angel Has Fallen, 300), and his Afghan interpreter Mo, played by Navid Negahban (TV’s Homeland, 24, Legion).
Gerard Butler at His Best: From Destruction to Desperate Escape
In “Kandahar,” we see Gerard Butler, known for his electrifying performances in “Greenland” and “Angel Has Fallen,” take on the role of Tom Harris, a CIA Black Ops agent. His mission turns sour when he’s exposed as the man behind the destruction of an Iranian nuclear facility, setting off a desperate race against time. With only 30 hours to reach the airport in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Tom’s survival hangs in the balance, making for a movie experience filled with suspense.
An Unlikely Alliance: Navigating Conflicts and Terrains
Tom’s escape is complicated by the need for an ally, found in his Afghan interpreter, Mo, portrayed by Navid Negahban of “Homeland” and “24.” Mo, haunted by his past and disillusioned with the violence surrounding him, initially resists but eventually joins Tom’s frantic dash to safety. Their evolving friendship amidst the escape adds a layer of depth to the non-stop action.
Historic Cinematic Feat: “Kandahar” Breaks New Ground
Adding to the movie’s allure is its historic achievement as the first Western film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia.
Kandahar has made history as the first Western movie filmed entirely in Saudi Arabia. Talking about the experience filming in the city of Al’Ula, Gerard Butler said,“That was an exceptionally unique place to film and live. From the second I arrived there, I knew it was special. I’d seen photos of the area of course, and I knew it looked amazing, but just the energy there is what really takes you by surprise… I loved being in Al’Ula and discovering Saudi Arabia In my time off, I spent time just seeing the history, the nature. But in terms of a canvas to film on, there’s so much personality there, and it’s so dynamic. The location adds a whole other character in the movie.“

Earlier this week, we had the unique privilege of joining an enlightening in-person roundtable interview with the brilliant minds behind the much-anticipated film, ‘Keys to the Heart’. In a room filled with a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation, we delved deep, seeking to uncover the story’s soul, its characters’ essence, and the journey of translating such a narrative for audiences on Netflix.
For those unfamiliar, ‘Keys to the Heart’ is a narrative born from the foundations of CJ ENM Corporation’s motion picture. Under the watchful eye of Director Kerwin Go and backed by the production prowess of Reality MM Studios, Creative Group 8, and Viva Films, the film journeys into the heart of family dynamics, rediscovery, and personal growth. It showcases a troubled boxer’s poignant tale who, after years of alienation, finds himself reconnecting with his long-lost mother and an autistic pianist brother.
Zanjoe Marudo: Embracing the Challenge
Donning the gloves of the troubled boxer was no walk in the park, and no one knows this better than Zanjoe Marudo. Films often bridge the gap between fantasy and reality, where actors immerse themselves in stories that sometimes resonate deeply with their personal lives. During our discussion, he emphasized the gravity of stepping into the shoes of a character with such intense emotional undertones. When asked about the elements of the film that struck a personal chord, Zanjoe candidly shared, “Siguro ang pinaka malapit, yung meron akong niece na nasa spectrum na may autism.” This profound personal connection was a significant driving force behind his portrayal. This, combined with themes of family dynamics, shaped his genuine and heartfelt performance.
When asked about how he approached the duality of his character, Zanjoe, with a playful banter with the fellow cast, humorously asked if we had seen the film. Following some cheerful remarks about the cast’s envy of the early screening, Zanjoe delved deep into his craft. He confessed, “Hindi ko alam na ganon pala yung effect nung lumabas sa movie ni Joma na may comedic side, and then may drama.” His genuine surprise at the blend of comedy and drama reflects his intrinsic method of embracing his roles. Crediting the compelling story and script from the original Korean production, Zanjoe emphasized the importance of teamwork in filmmaking.
What stood out was Zanjoe’s testament to the power of trust in the directorial vision. He noted, “Pag sila yung ka trabaho mo alam mo na pare parehas yung vision, yung goal.” Highlighting that the harmony within the crew made things feel natural, Zanjoe expressed that there was never a point where they felt they were overexerting for a scene. The sincerity came naturally, all thanks to Director Kerwin’s guidance.
For him, one of the standout challenges was the physical aspect of his role. Before going into production, both he and his co-stars underwent rigorous training sessions, with Zanjoe focusing on boxing. “Gusto talaga ni direk na… yung tao, boxingero to,” Zanjoe shared, emphasizing the necessity for his character’s every movement and mannerism to scream ‘boxer’. This level of dedication to the craft was palpable.
Inspirations were drawn from the world-renowned boxer Manny Pacquiao, creating a genuine portrayal of a Filipino boxer. This authenticity did not come without challenges, however. Recalling a particularly strenuous shooting day involving boxing scenes, Zanjoe humorously recounted attending an Eraserheads concert the next day and fainting, attributing it to the physical exertions from filming. Despite the challenges, he confessed he’d willingly embrace them again, such was his commitment to the role.
In addition to his on-screen challenges, Director Kerwin Go added another layer to the narrative, revealing that Zanjoe’s on-screen nemesis was portrayed by real cage fighter, MarkStriegl. Go reminisced, “Mark does not know his strength…so Zanjoe had to endure hours of training with this guy.” Filming wasn’t devoid of its hurdles either, with Zanjoe sustaining multiple injuries during the process. Go’s admiration was evident as he quipped, “kudos to Zanjoe, you really took one for the team.”
Elijah Canlas: Striking the Right Note
Elijah Canlas had the challenge of portraying the autistic pianist—a role that demanded authenticity, understanding, and a genuine appreciation for the world of music.
When questioned about the extent of his preparation for the role, Elijah’s response was enlightening. Interestingly, he began, “I thought like this role was meant to be,” hinting at a serendipity. A year before the film’s shooting, Elijah had already dabbled in piano lessons. While this was a fortunate head start, the classical pieces required for the movie presented a new challenge altogether. With only a month’s time to master seven intricate compositions, Elijah’s commitment shone bright. “We trained almost every day or every other day,” he recollected. The dedication of his teacher, matched Elijah’s fervor, going as far as visiting Elijah’s home or conducting Zoom sessions just to squeeze in some extra lessons.
Elijah’s insights shed light on the magic behind their rapport. “Wala kaming workshop or anything,” he began, highlighting the spontaneity of their collaboration. Meeting only during the look test, their chemistry wasn’t meticulously crafted in a rehearsal room. Instead, it sprouted organically, rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision.
Elijah’s admiration for Zanjoe was evident, describing him as “one of the kindest, one of the funniest guys, that you can meet.” Zanjoe’s open-mindedness and willingness to collaborate were pivotal in forming their bond. Elijah emphasized, “he was open to me from the very start.” This openness, complemented by Zanjoe’s seriousness and dedication on set, established a balanced work dynamic — one that allowed both actors to be serious about their craft while also enjoying the process.
When a young talent meets an established name in the industry, sparks of inspiration are bound to fly. This was evident when Elijah shared his experiences working alongside the renowned Ms. Dolly De Leon in ‘Keys to the Heart.’ The playful anecdote Elijah shared about a spontaneous decision to cut his bangs – and Ms. De Leon’s creative incorporation of that into their on-screen dynamics – is a testament to their shared chemistry and understanding. With her turning this simple haircut into an affectionate mother-son moment, it became clear that it’s these tiny nuances, these unscripted moments, that bring authenticity and warmth to a film. When posed with the question about any acting guidance he received from Dolly, Elijah recounted, “She just told me to go for it.” Such simple advice, yet loaded with layers of meaning. To “go for it” is more than just a call to action; it’s a testament to trusting one’s instincts, taking risks, and diving into the character’s psyche.
Michelle Dee: A Voice of Autism Awareness On and Off Screen
Michelle Dee’s presence in the film, while shrouded in a veil of mystery during our chat, unquestionably adds layers of depth and nuance to the overarching narrative. Autism awareness and inclusivity have long been topics that resonate deeply within the core of society, touching many lives. In ‘Keys to the Heart,’ the message of understanding, love, and acceptance for individuals on the autism spectrum is magnificently personified through the character played by Michelle Dee.
Michelle opened up about the personal connection she feels towards her role and the broader theme of the movie. Last year, when she learned about the role she was about to take on – that of a mentor to an individual on the autism spectrum – she felt an undeniable kinship. Having two siblings on the autism spectrum herself and being a fervent advocate for autism awareness, the role felt like destiny intertwining with her personal journey.
The movie, which was unfamiliar to her until she delved into it, serves as an instrumental medium to spread positive awareness about autism. “All of these individuals, even if they are on the autism spectrum, have so much talent and so much purpose,” she passionately stated, emphasizing the invaluable potential they bring to the world.
Michelle’s hope, echoing the sentiment of many advocates around the world, is that the film sparks a conversation. A conversation that nudges people to ask the right questions, broadens horizons, and fosters acceptance. It’s not just about awareness; it’s about redefining the narrative surrounding autism, focusing on the strengths, capabilities, and immeasurable value that individuals on the spectrum bring to the table.
Michelle shared her enriching experience of working with the diverse characters in the film. Each actor brought a unique depth and perspective to their role, making the entire experience akin to an intensive masterclass for her. “I love working with talented individuals,” she commented, emphasizing how she thrives in the presence of those she perceives as more seasoned in the craft. The essence of filmmaking goes beyond just delivering lines; it’s about absorbing nuances, studying character dynamics, and evolving as an artist. She expressed immense gratitude for the camaraderie on set, describing the atmosphere as family-like, devoid of any tension. “Walang mabigat na pakiramdam,” she remarked, encapsulating the light-hearted and positive ambiance that permeated the production.
However, what stands out is Michelle’s humility and insatiable appetite for growth. By surrounding herself with experienced actors, she showcased a willingness to learn and adapt, to imbibe their skills, and to challenge her boundaries. By the end of the project, Michelle felt a profound transformation in herself as an artist.
Kerwin Go: The Mastermind’s Vision
At the helm of the project, Director Kerwin Go was the guiding light ensuring that each scene, each character nuance, and each musical note struck the right chord. His vision was clear: to adapt a renowned story for a Filipino audience while keeping its core essence intact.
It was a treat hearing from Director Kerwin Go, the visionary ensuring that each element of the film resonated with its core ethos. Initiated by Mr. BJ Song, a Korean producer with Group 8, the production emerged as a melting pot of cinematic expertise. With Reality Entertainment led by Mr. Don Don Monteverde and Direk Erik Matti, coupled with Viva Entertainment, the project was indeed international in its scope. In Go’s words, “you have a Korean producer, Filipino studio making it, two Filipino studios and in the end, it got picked up and distributed by an American company which is Netflix.” The tapestry of global collaboration paints an image of unity in diversity, suggesting that narratives, irrespective of origin, have the potential to speak universally.
Our interaction with the incredible talent behind ‘Keys to the Heart’ was nothing short of enlightening. Through the lens of talented actors, the film invites viewers into a world where family bonds, challenges, and aspirations blend in a symphony of heartwarming moments. It stands as a testament to the essence of genuine connection and the transformative power of storytelling. If you’re looking for a captivating experience that delves into the complexities of human relationships, your search ends here. Don’t miss the chance to witness this captivating story as it unfolds, revealing the keys to the most profound melodies of the heart.

Set to expound on the world of the immensely popular film franchise ‘John Wick,’ ‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick’ is a 3-part mini-series that details the origin story of Winston Scott (played by Ian McShane in the films) and Charon (played by Lance Reddick in the movies). Set in the 1970s, it’s a view of the complex underworld of New York torn and broken by the Vietnam war and punctuated by the wild excess of drugs and disco and the rising anger of the anti-establishment as punk finds its voice. Developed for streaming by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, and Shawn Simmons, they present New York as if it was a retro dystopian hellhole. Saturated colors give it an old-school feel while every street corner is filled with trash, graffiti, and violence.
This is not the slick and glossy world as presented in the films. This is a dark look into the past and the cast of characters that inhabit here are haunted by their own demons that come crashing down together when the world of the high table is turned upside-down by one robbery in the hotel called The Continental.
The Continental Season 1
Winston Scott (played by Colin Woodell) is a charming, quick on his feet grifter, who finds himself taken by force while on a job in London and brought to New York where his brother, Frankie (Ben Robson) has stolen something of great worth from Cormac, the manager of The Continental. Played by Mel Gibson, Cormac is an arrogant, evil force. He’s manipulative and regards himself highly and while he had taken both Winston and Frankie when they were but orphans living in the street and raised them, he has also raised them to be criminals like he is.
THE CONTINENTAL: FROM THE WORLD OF JOHN WICK — “Night 1” — Pictured: Mel Gibson as Cormac — (Photo by: Katalin Vermes/Starz Entertainment)
Though he’s estranged from his brother, Winston must now find Frankie and try to protect him from the consequences of his actions because Cormac is out for blood. What he stole is not just important to Cormac, it is important to the mysterious High Table as well, the powers that be in the world of John Wick that run the machinations that makes the world move.
What I enjoyed about the three episode mini-series is that ‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick’ is focused less on the inhabitants of the hotel – the assassins like John Wick – and instead on the people on the fringes of this underworld. Gun runners, cops, war veterans, street urchins, and all other kinds of people in the fringes who are trying to make do in this broken world that’s presented to us.
From martial arts trained brother and sister duo of Miles (Hubert Point-Du Jour) and Lou (Jessica Allain) to the investigator KD (Mishel Prada) and her detective lover (Jeremy Bobb), to Frankie’s dangerous Vietnamese soldier wife, Yen (Nhung Kate) – the world of this series is populated by people who are not as successful as the people of the High Table but just as dangerous.
Each story is of characters finding purpose when everything around them is falling apart and society is not out to make things any easier. They are forced into a life of crime and violence and danger while, in the hotel, there are assassins who are trading the comforts of home in gold coins. Amidst all of this, Winston is out to learn the truth about his family (as do a lot of the other characters in the show) and how everything points to breaking down the establishment that is causing all the trouble in the first place.
THE CONTINENTAL: FROM THE WORLD OF JOHN WICK — “Night 1” — Pictured: Ayomide Adegun as Charon — (Photo by: Katalin Vermes/Starz Entertainment)
‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick’ is hard-hitting and relentless. Each episode is the length of a movie (anywhere from 88 minutes to 90+ minutes an episode) and it has its share of quiet, introspective moments from the characters as well as very elaborate fight sequences that is befitting of a show that is adapted from the world of the ‘John Wick’ movies. The fights involve guns and martial arts. There are huge explosions as there are graphic displays of violence involving swords and knives and pick axes. Some of these fight scenes last 20 minutes (reminiscent of the final movie in the ‘John Wick’ franchise) but what keeps it from being too self-indulgent is that these epic fight scenes are moving towards the culmination of a specific character arc. They emphasize the grit and determination of these characters to get exactly the revenge they are seeking against Cormac, The Continental, and the world that it represents.
The Continental Season 1
I’m familiar with Woodell from his work in ‘The Originals’ and it’s great to see him oozing with charm and gravitas. He’s a surprisingly strong and solid lead that is carrying this show forward. Holding their own, Prada, Allain, and Point-Du Jour are also quite arresting in their moments making the show quite easy to watch. The difficulty here is seeing Mel Gibson back in full force.
The Continental Season 1
There’s nothing particularly special or interesting in his portrayal of the evil, one-dimensional monster that is Cormac. The writers give him a medley of delicious lines and antics to play with – a religious man who is okay with praying for victory against his opponents as one example – and Gibson throws these lines out without any charm. It’s as if he’s expecting people to hate him and he is leanign into the image that his off-camera persona has become to fuel the role. There is no nuance to this character because it’s exactly what he has been painted in the media to be – aggressive and hostile, angry, misogynistic, and racist. If this portrayal was meant to capitalize on his off-screen persona, it feels manipulative and unsavory. They could have gotten anyone else, and it would have been better. Luckily for Gibson, he gets to perform beside Ayomide Adegun, who plays the younger Charon. Adegun is full of charm and manages to keep his character unpredictable and interesting that he practically steals every scene from Gibson.
The long running time per episode gives each episode a weight and an importance that helps push the show into prestige territory. It feels big even though the whole thing happens in only very few locations. The fight scenes are huge, but the stakes are very personal. The show manages to feel big and be impressive while not really being about anything huge or world changing, and this is a testament to how well done it is. It’s interesting to look at, it makes you wonder why it has made the aesthetic choices that it has – like why depict 70s New York as a world that’s worse than Christopher Nolan’s Gotham City – and keeps the interesting on-going and then it ends before it outstays its welcome.
Other than Gibson, my only real complaint is the excessive use of popular music of the era that creates a wall of noise that can sometimes overpower a scene. I suppose it is to help root the world in that timeline, but I feel that it was done excessively and served as a distraction rather than an amplification.
But other than that, ‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick’ is a worthwhile watch if you’re looking for something violent and tough and just a little bit familiar.

Directors Weigh In
Renowned for its eclectic mix of stories, Netflix’s commitment to showcasing Filipino talent was palpable at the “See What’s Next: Philippines 2023” launch. Esteemed local directors expressed their anticipation and shared the essence of their films.
Manny Palo, the brilliant mind behind What If, reflected on the essence of Christmas, “Christmas is about family, familial love, friends and it’s during [this] season when we try to evaluate the life that we had the past year, the milestones, failures, disappointment. Just like in our film, What If. What if iba nangyari sa buhay natin in the past year? What if kinuha ko ito or what if ’di ko ginawa ito? So I think it’s also not just a love story, it also helps us reflect kung ano nangyari sa buhay natin,”
Kerwin Go, the director for Keys to the Heart, highlighted the importance of family, no matter how unconventional or diverse they might be. “Keys to the Heart is a family dramedy. It’s a celebration of family, unconventional families, meaning blended families. It could be a family that you adopt and friends who become family and neighbors who actually become just as important.”
Dan Villegas emphasized the themes of love, friendship, and acceptance in Replacing Chef Chico, “Replacing Chef Chico is about Ella, the sous chef who takes over Hain’s kitchen. I think it’s perfect for the Christmas season because on the top level it’s about love, friendship, and acceptance,” said director Dan Villegas. While the series’ showrunner, Antoinette Jadaone, gave a nod to the Pinoy palate, stressing the series’ deep-rooted focus on Filipino food and culture. “For Christmas, perfect panoorin with your family, friends, and loved ones yung Replacing Chef Chico because, in every episode, there is a story of family, friendship and/or love, which is celebrated over food. It’s about time that Filipino food gets its proper spotlight. With this series, it’s a Filipino-produced original Netflix series, it’s a celebration of not just family, friends, or love but tayong mga Pinoy will be celebrating the Filipino food that we eat each day. When other countries watch the series, mafi-feel din nila iyon.”
