  • REVIEW: A Promising Irreverent Cop Show: a review of the first 3 episodes of ‘Seoul Busters’

REVIEW: A Promising Irreverent Cop Show: a review of the first 3 episodes of ‘Seoul Busters’

The first three episodes of the upcoming Disney+ streaming show, ‘Seoul Busters,’ features irreverent humor that goes no-holds barred with its humor and comedy. Unlike other comedic K-drama cop shows that takes its storylines seriously while dropping comic moments and funny dialogue here and there, ‘Seoul Busters’ is more about having fun and cracking jokes at almost every turn. It feels more like a situational comedy than a comedic cop serial, which means that it has a different flavour but is still distinctly a K-drama.

The 12-episode show is about the worst performing squad in the violent crimes police squad. They include Moo Jung-ryeok (Park Ji-Hwan), who is a tough talking, hot-headed, former member of the National Boxing team; Jeong Jeong-hwan (Seo Hyun-woo), an obsequious detective who is always pandering to anyone of authority; Seo Min-seo (Park Se-wan), the only woman in the group who is as tough talking as the guys but is secretly hiding her longing for a boyfriend; and the rookie, Jang Tan-sik (Lee Seung Woo), who appears to be not very bright or not at all capable but is extremely enthusiastic and eager to be helpful.

    Seoul Busters Still 5

Combined, they form the lowest-rank squad and are a constant pain to their superintendent. It’s so bad that they were forced to relocate in a former day care center when their office was up for renovation. The visual comedy of these tough talking police detectives trying to work in the setting of a day care center. The building interiors are colorful, there’s a ball pool, a slide, and most of the chairs are built for children. In two episodes of the first three episodes, there’s an interrogation scene where they are in a room with tiny chairs and tables and the Moo Jung-ryeok and the suspect have to play out an interrogation scene while sitting in seats made for children. The idea of it is hilarious.

    Seoul Busters Still 1

Things change when a new captain is brought into play. Enter Dongban Yu-bin (Kim Dong-wook). He’s smart, capable, and multi-awarded and while he was set for a job at the administrative level, he requested to be transferred to violent crimes as he feels he still has much to learn on the field. He is perfect in every way, entering a crime scene and observing little details that is shown to the audience by subtitles popping out with every detail that catches his attention. He has relatively poor social skills, though, and as he is assigned to the squad, Moo Jung-ryeok immediately dislikes him, Jeong Jeong-hwan tries to get to his good side, Seo Min-seo is fighting her growing feelings for him, and Jang Tan-sik is trying his best to still be helpful.

    Seoul Busters Still 4

The first episode of the 12-episode series is set to establish the characters and the milieu and introduces us to the first case. The second and third episode shows the detectives at work, trying to solve the case and getting into hilarious shenanigans while playing out the dynamics of the new team. The first case gets resolved by the end of episode three before they introduce a new case, so it seems that the show may take on an episodic structure with the goal of seeing if Dongban Yu-bin has what it takes to raise the squad from the lowest to the level of even being competent.

    Seoul Busters Still 6

While the first case is solved through some detective work, the intricacy of the crime is revealed so it creates a whodunit structure, the show is really more focused on the humor aspect. It is not afraid to go highbrow or even low brow (sometimes even veering into toilet humor). It seems nothing is off limits at the moment and so how the show will continue to evolve will be quite interesting.

For some reason, the show reminds me of ‘Brooklyn 99’ and if the humor continues in this vein, it’s going to be a fun 12 episodes.

  • REVIEW: The ‘Rings of Power season 2’ is a clumsy meditation on corruption

REVIEW: The ‘Rings of Power season 2’ is a clumsy meditation on corruption

I was not a fan of the first season of ‘The Rings of Power,’ the Prime Video streaming series based on the appendices of JRR Tolkien’s beloved ‘Lord of the Rings’ books. My biggest gripe was in the depiction of the elves as people who were just as frivolous and emotionally unstable as the humans. I talked about the inevitable comparisons that were going to be made between the show and Peter Jackson’s vision of that world in his ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. But considering the amount of money that Prime Video has thrown at this show, I was curious to see if things would get better on its second round.

The second season is now focused on the forging of the titular Rings of Power. The eight-episode season is focused on Sauron (Charlie Vickers), who has now disguised himself as the elf Annatar manipulates the elvish smith Celebrimbor (Charles Edward) to forge more rings for the dwarves and the race of man. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) must face the consequences of her actions in season one as she is forced to confess of her dealings with Sauron, when he was disguised as the human Halbrand to Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) and Elron (Robert Aramayo). The dwarves are in disarray as an earthquake caused by the rise of a volcano in Mordor destroys the sun shafts in Kaza-dum forcing King Durin (Peter Mulan) and his son Durin (Owain Arthus) to navigate their tempestuous relationship. The Harfoots Nori (Markella Kavanagh) and Poppy (Megan Richards) continue to accompany the Stranger (Daniel Weyman) to find the point of the stars while, in later episodes, we discover the chaos that is happening in the realms of men, highlighting the story of Queen Regent Miriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) and Isildur (Maxim Baldry) as the orcs march out of Mordor led by Adar (Sam Hazeldine).

    SDCCTrailer FrameGrabs PrinceDurin 01

It’s a lot of stories that is happening simultaneously and what is attractive about the show is how the immense budget is reflected in the CGI and the production of each scene. The show looks expensive, and the special effects are convincing enough, giving life to giant spiders, ents, trolls, and even the Barrow-Wights. The world is immersive, with hundreds of extras keeping the world populated and making sure the show doesn’t feel small.

    SDCCTrailer FrameGrabs Adar3 01

In fact, with all the storylines at play, it’s just a marvel at how much all of this must cost.

There is an enjoyable aspect to the narrative: a classic epic adventure story with multiple protagonists on their own quests to strive towards stopping a great evil. But as we are now into the second season, several characters have yet to interact and some of the storylines have yet to fully intersect, which slows down the pace of the whole show altogether. At eight episodes, the Stranger and his quest for his forgotten memories and his name takes forever and while it continues to strengthen the bond between him and the two Harfoots, his storyline still feels adjunct to the main narrative.

    SDCCTrailer FrameGrabs Annatar2 01

The ones who get the most focus are the elves, and this is still my most sour spot on the whole show. For beings that live for thousands of years, they make the most foolish mistakes and make the most questionable of actions. Galadriel’s insistence of facing Sauron despite the fact that he has fooled her for almost all of the first season should be a cause for self-reflection and instead, it emboldens her to do more acts that feel impulsive and reckless. The same can be said for Elrond and the way by which Celebrimbor is so easily swayed and manipulated by Sauron-as-Annatar does not feel at all seemly for the character of the elves.

    SDCCTrailer FrameGrabs Elrond2 01

The highlights of the show are the moments when it focuses on the Dwarves. Disa is still one of the most realised characters in the show and is performed extremely well by Sophia Nomvete. Their storyline is the one that moves at a proper pace yet still manages to delve into the emotional weight of the issues at hand. Things get even worse when the dwarven rings come into play.

    SDCCTrailer FrameGrabs Galadriel 01

Season 2 grounds itself by exploring the corrupting effect of power and fame and glory. It’s best when it navigates this as best seen in the storyline of the Dwarves or when Elrond argues with Galadriel regarding her ring (though Galadriel’s position, considering her past experience with Sauron, makes for a weak argument) or the way by which Sauron plays with Celebrimbor’s own pride. It would have been interesting to see this play out if the writing was stronger and tighter (which means removing the adjunct stories like The Stranger’s or Isildur’s) but all of this is bogged down by the rest of the storylines that all don’t push towards a clear focus.

And, by the end of the season, there’s still so many storylines left opened – of course, for the eventual third season – but none of which feels even partially resolved. It still feels like the first act of the larger story and that can get quite tedious.

    My Rating:

  • REVIEW: Big Stars and impressive budget propel ‘Red Swan’ through its hazy first two episodes

REVIEW: Big Stars and impressive budget propel ‘Red Swan’ through its hazy first two episodes

Two big stars – Kim Ha Neul and Jung Ji Hoon (more popularly known as Rain) – are some of the biggest and most established names in Korean entertainment. Working together is definitely big news, and you can see the Disney+ produced K-Drama has the budget to celebrate this artistic collaboration. ‘Red Swan,’ based on its first two episodes, is poised as an action/romance/thriller as Kim Ha Neul plays Oh Wan Soo, the wife of a chaebol heir whose high-profile global charities has put her in the crosshairs of terrorist groups. While on an important event in Manila, she is attacked and is rescued by a highly trained, former policeman, Seo Do Yoon (Jung Ji Hoon), who ends up joining her security detail. What complicates things is that it seems Do Yoon is following a trail of the murder of his friends which leads him straight into the chaebol family that Oh Wan Soo is married into. Adding fuel to the fire, Wan Soo has had it with her adulterous husband and may be attracted to her brand-new bodyguard.

    Review Red Swan Disney

‘Red Swan,’ written by Choi Yoon Jung and directed by Park Hong-kyun, is fast-paced and glitzy. It prefers to take short cuts in character building and development and is more intent in showing off its cast and its huge budget. It relies on archetypes and tropes to help set up the characters and their place in this world while impressing upon us the high stakes world of this reality. Oh Wan Soo is an impressive woman. Her foundation, The Now Foundation, has done what appears to be immeasurable good for the world. So much so, that she’s being targeted by Isis. She is unfazed, though, but what is more surprising is the way by which her husband’s family reacts.

    Red Swan Photo 6 13 23 5 08 28

Her mother-in-law, as early as episode one, is already being poised to take the mantle of the drama’s main antagonist, or one of them, at the very least. She’s an abrasive woman who is fond of shouting and throwing things around. She’s the typical feisty, rich, and sinister mother-in-law who looks down on our protagonist and will definitely get in her way. Oh Wan Soo’s husband, Kim Yong-guk (Jung Gyu-Woon), doesn’t get to show much of any layers other than his dismissive affair that’s revealed by the second episode but there might be more to him than meets the eye.

    Red Swan Photo 3 14 23 12 16 20

The break-neck speed by which the story unfolds makes it difficult for the creative team to juggle its storylines. It awkwardly juggles between Oh Wan Soo and Seo Do Yoon, whose storylines begin very far away from each other that when the show jumps from one to the other, it doesn’t quite make sense. Do Yoon is in Manila trying to find clues to the murder of a friend, also from the police force. While searching for it in Manila, he comes across Oh Wan Soo as she is attacked in Makati and the story finally comes together.

Red Swan Oh Wansoo Still 1

There are a lot of issues plaguing the first two episodes of ‘Red Swan.’ The most apparent is the way by which it depicts Manila. Sure, the drone shots that establish location was taken in the city but it’s shots of a commercial space that is meant to be Makati looks either somewhere in McKinley Hill (not a place I’m familiar with) or a completely different location altogether. It doesn’t help that all the crowd extras are primarily white or East Asian looking. It doesn’t look or feel like Makati at all (though it is nice that we are depicted as such a clean, orderly place). The storyline feels rushed to try and set up this world early to try and get the two main characters together and to start the romantic storyline up and running but also amping up the feel of dread and danger. It’s quite a lot to handle and the direction and writing isn’t holding everything up in this regard.

Red Swan Seo Doyoon Still 1 1

Fortunately, the two lead stars are a completely arresting watch. Kim Ha Neul adds a certain dignity to Oh Wan Soo that makes her a fascinating character study. She’s tired of all the BS and it seems she’s lost all track of what is keeping her moving forward. When Seo Do Yoon comes into her life, she gazes into him trying to decode him and discover what he is about. It’s that look that brings about the passion in this show. Jung Ji Hoon has a gait and a posture of a leading man. He has such a strong presence that even if the scenes play out so typically like any action series I’ve seen before, his swagger hits differently that it doesn’t get boring.

Hopefully, after all the stumbling around and trying to put all the story elements into place, the show will pick up and find its rhythm and pace because its stars can’t carry the whole show solely on their shoulders for the rest of the eight episodes to follow.

  • Superstars Rain and Kim Ha Neul Talk About Their New Drama ‘Red Swan’ on Disney+

Superstars Rain and Kim Ha Neul Talk About Their New Drama ‘Red Swan’ on Disney+

Last July 2, the cast and director of the new K-Drama produced by Disney+ ‘Red Swan’ held a press conference on the day before the first episode was released on the streaming platform. ClickTheCity was invited to watch as the cast – which includes Korean superstars Kim Ha Neul and Jung Ji-Hoon (better known as Rain) as well as Jung Gyu-woon, Seo Yi Sook, and Ki Eun Se – talked about the show and showed off their vibrant personalities.

The drama promises to be an action-packed suspense thriller with a very healthy dose of romance. Kim Ha Neul stars as Oh Wan Soo, a former world champion professional golfer who marries into a chaebol family and becomes a UN Goodwill Ambassador whose work threatens terrorist organizations and has her at their crosshairs. Jung Ji-Hoon plays a former policeman who becomes Wan Soo’s bodyguard, but he has an agenda of his own. From the first two episodes, while Wan Soo faces a threat from the outside, her biggest threat may come from her husband’s mother (Seo Yi Sook).

Red Swan Oh Wansoo Still 1

Like any press conference, the moderator invites each of the cast to come up on stage for photos and then asked the two leads, Kim Ha Neul and Jung Ji-Hoon to pose together. Immediately, you can see their chemistry playing off of each other when the moderator asks them to pose as their characters, and Rain immediately imitates a security detail, complete with gesturing towards his ear as if he was wearing an earpiece. The two laugh at the gesture but are able to get serious enough for one good shot.

    Red Swan YJH00231

From the get-go, you can see how comfortable they are with each other which plays off well onscreen as the passion between the two characters are already evident as early as episode one.

On the flipside, when Seo Yi Sook joins the two on stage, they were asked to make “fatal pose” and Rain opens his arms for a hug to Seo Yi Sook, who also laughs. The irony is at play here as it seems that Seo Yi Sook may play the main villain.

Red Swan Seo Doyoon Still 1

When it was time to answer questions from the press, the cast was joined by Park Hong-kyun. The first question was directed to the leads, and they were asked why they accepted to do ‘Red Swan.’ Kim Ha Neul opened up about how she had loved ‘The Bodyguard’ with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston so it was a chance to do her own version. But what really gripped her was how strong the script was. For Jung Ji Hoon, he had always wanted to work with director Park Hong Kyun and every time a project would surface, something always came up and the project never pushed through. So when this show was offered to him, he said yes immediately.

Director Park Hong Kyun is known for his action-packed style of directing and had always wanted to work with Rain in an action-led series. He knew what Rain could do as an action star and was very happy that Rain was always giving a lot of ideas in how to do certain action scenes. The two seemed like willing collaborators to make the show more thrilling. It also gives a glimpse of Rain’s experience and creative side. Jung Ji-Hoon is a very physical actor and likes to do his own stunts. “I like to be responsible for my action sequences,” he said. What shocked Park Hong Kyun, though, was Jung Ji-Hoon’s emotional strength. He was the last person cast for the drama and he was chosen because of his experience in action but his vulnerability became the show’s hidden strength.

“My character doesn’t have a lot of lines,” Jung Ji-Hoon said. “So, I have to work a lot with just how I look and I have to act with only my eyes.” Park Hong Kyun was amazed and was not expecting this side of Jung Ji-Hoon’s range as an actor. He also shared that Rain had worked closely with their consultant on how to properly project and come off like a real bodyguard and Rain said that part of it was having to speak with a “cool tone,” which he had observed from his research. The moderator then asked him if he could try speaking with his modulated voice and the actor asked for a moment and he fixed his posture and then, with a totally new tone of voice asked the audience to please support the drama.

For Kim Ha Neul, she watched a lot of Goodwill Ambassadors and tried to capture their grace and poise. And while she golfs in her leisure time, she had to really train hard as her character “was the best in the world” and she knew she couldn’t just fake it. For Jung Gyu-woon, who plays the husband of Kim Ha Neul, he wanted to steer away from a stereotypical chaebol heir. While his character is problematic, he pushed for the character to be truly in love with Oh Wan Soo so that there would be a tortured nuance to the character. “He’s a complex character,” he said, “And I want to show him struggling that his wife, which he loves so much, has so much friction with his mother.”

On the other hand, Ki Eun Se sees her character as a sort of comic relief. From the first two episodes, she comes off as a family friend, sometimes a nanny to On Wan Soo’s child but she has her own agenda and it’s to take Jung Gyu-woon for her own. “Her story is the one that breaks all the tension,” she says, laughing.

    Red Swan

With the many genres that are playing out in ‘Red Swan,’ the two leads were asked what approached did they focus on the most and while Kim Ha Neul felt that her character was more focused on the threats to her life, that as an actress, she focused on the mystery and the intrigue – the suspense genre that pushes the show’s plot forward – but for Rain, he felt that he wanted to focus more on the romance aspect of the story. Because he wanted to put the relationship of Oh Wan Soo and her bodyguard at the center, he opted to say the lines as written and to avoid from doing improvisations to help Kim Ha Neul work with him for their passionate scenes. With the show’s pedigree of great talent involved and the sort of camaraderie that they projected during this press conference; ‘Red Swan’ may be a show to watch out for on Disney+.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: It’s Not Just a Fantasy: a review of ‘The Idea of You’

MOVIE REVIEW: It’s Not Just a Fantasy: a review of ‘The Idea of You’

I’m surprised at how utterly relatable ‘The Idea of You’ was for me, and all the screaming gays and women in the cinema I was in when watching the Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine romantic drama/comedy about an older divorced mother of a teenager and her relationship with a 24-year-old pop star. I may not have children, but I do love my idol groups and as someone who has reached middle age and feeling the brunt of adulting in a very difficult and tedious world, the fantasy of getting swept off of my feet by a younger, handsome pop star is a fantasy I didn’t realise was a very real thing that was stirring inside.

And the direction by Michael Showalter and the screenplay by Showalter and Jennifer Westfeldt (based on the book by Robinne Lee) really plays into the fantasy of it. Everything within the set-up of this narrative to the way the element of the story plays out is all so fictional and so convenient for this sort of story. Hathaway plays Solene Marchand, who runs an art gallery in Silver Lake. She has a teenage daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin) and her ex-husband has, of course, cheated on her with a younger workmate. Her ex-husband pays for VIP passes and a meet and greet with Izzy’s favorite band when she was in seventh grade, August Moon, in Coachella and gets Solene to take them there. At Coachella, she accidentally meets Hayes Campbell, a member of August Moon and he is smitten by her. Their love story begins.

    August Moon Poster
    IDEA 2023 UT 221122 WETALI 00638RC

Of course, Hayes loves art. The trust issues both have – Solene from her failed marriage while Hayes stems from his stardom and the pitfalls of money and fame – allows them to find some sort of peace and safety with each other. The fact that Solene had a baby at such a young age (it was mentioned that it was unplanned) meant that she never got to really experience the wild and crazy time that we are expected to have in our 20s. Hayes becomes an avenue for her to find out who she truly is as a person outside the choices that she made in her lost her youth.

    IDEA 2023 UT 221122 WETALI 00900CR

Everything about the first hour and a half of this film plays so well to the fantasy of this dramatic situation. It’s passionate. It helps that both actors are so ridiculously good-looking and that they do an amazing job of really selling the love story. There’s this youthful longing that Galitzine dips into and throws at Hathaway and there’s a way that Hathaway takes this unbelievable character and makes her so real. It’s as if she understands and makes her character understand that this situation is crazy, and she still runs with it. She has a way to make each facial expression – whether she’s hurt or in the throes of joy or in a state of disbelief – seem so real and natural. Showalter also doesn’t hold back in making their relationship sexual and despite its frequency, it never feels gratuitous or obscene. It’s really rooted in Hayes’ youth and Solene’s desire to reclaim hers.

    IDEA 2023 FG 01024405 Still367RC

It’s the last half hour when the film pushes away from the fantasy to try and delve into the real-world issues that comes with the territory. It highlights the double standards that the world has on women dating younger men, and the ways by which the world and society boxes them into certain roles. Of course, there’s no way a global pop star can keep a relationship secret and it shows off how ugly it can all be.

    IDEA 2023 FG 01294222 Still576R3C Crop

And while the film manages to convey the hurt this “scandal” does to Solene but the film never tries to put judgement on all the delusional people on the internet who makes these sort of judgments to people they do not know, whose business they have no right to comment on or pass judgement. I know it’s not the film’s job to moralize against this, but I felt that it was in the right space to make some sort of statement about the public’s delusion that they have a right to say whatever they want on the lives of people they do not know – even if it’s a pop star who works in the public sphere.

    IDEA 2023 UT 221019 WETALI 01020R Crop

The film feels young without trying too hard. It’s chock full of songs both new (to showcase August Moon with Nicholas Galitzine credited for singing all his parts) and some really nice, older songs like St Vincent and Fiona Apple. ‘The Idea of You’ is a wonderful little fantasy that comes alive on screen. It never really pretends to be serious or realistic, jumping certain narrative beats because it can, and because it does, it’s this lovely little escape that pulls down your guard so that it can explore some really important core issues before coming back and finishing it off in the tone and mood that it began with.

  • REVIEW: The first season of ‘Fallout’ is crazy good, with an emphasis on crazy

I know nothing about the video game ‘Fallout,’ which is the basis for the new 8-episode series on Amazon Prime with the same name, created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Not knowing the source material meant coming in completely blank and was very much pleasantly surprised at what I saw. ‘Fallout’ is a post-apocalyptic satire in a world driven mad by the destruction of the planet. Resources are limited, the powerful exercise authority by strength and fear, while those with available supplies keep it to themselves. The nuclear fallout (probably where the show gets its name) means that the world is irradiated; mutants abound, food is scarce, and no one can be trusted.

    https://youtu.be/V-mugKDQDlg?si=4TgXarYYCERAPTgY

The show follows the lives of three main characters: Lucy (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten), and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins). Lucy comes from the vault, a portion of the human race who were able to escape the ravages of the nuclear war that has kept them safe and well fed in the huge underground bunkers prepared way before the war broke out. But the population is thinning and living in the bunker has kept them safe but naive and sheltered. Maximus lives above ground, a trainee who is training to be a squire for one of the knights of The Brotherhood. The knights wear powerful suits of armor and while they are poised to be a sort of protective authority they’ve devolved into bullies. The Ghoul is a bounty hunter, and due to the effects of radiation poisoning (and whatever else), he regenerates quickly and has lived over 200 years.

Fallout Ella Purnell as Lucy in Fallout Large
    Ella Purnell (Lucy) in “Fallout”

The three lead characters are all crazy in their own way and through their lens, we see how satire of ‘Fallout’ plays out in the ways it questions authority, kindness (in a soulless world), hope, and civilization when everything has been torn apart.

Power Suit and Aaron Moten (Maximus) in “Fallout”
Fallout Walton Goggins as The Ghoul in Fallout Large
Walton Goggins (The Ghoul) in “Fallout”

The show is violent and gory, and it revels in that imagery. It is constantly reminding you that this idea of the world is an ugly one and a brutal one and it is not afraid to show it. Luckily, the film is scarce on gratuitous sex and nudity. When it has (and it’s very few) it used for its full effect and is never seen or felt as objectifying its characters. It’s a welcome change from other shows.

    Fallout PV Fallout 2 Large

The satire comments on the way the world’s harshness and how one must act to survive in such a world is a mirror to the world we live in today. As the show’s reality is situated with the nuclear disaster happening in the 60s or 70s, it means the technology is from that time – clunky, heavy, analog – which creates interesting visual textures that helps highlight the overall conservative moral values of the people at The Vault (Lucy’s world) and how that counterpoints with the values of the tattered world above the ground. The old school vibe amplifies the way the world has gone bonkers and the low-tech, lo-fi way by which technology is presented gives us a feel that the world has never gone to a level of sophistication that can afford better values. In Maximus’ world, The Brotherhood have metal armor, high powered weapons, and futuristic helicopters, but everyone is aggressive and a bully. There are tradeoffs here and it helps show the rich world building of the show.

Fallout Power Armor Suits in Fallout Large
    Power Armor Suits in “Fallout”

The plot is exciting and thrilling but it’s the world-building of ‘Fallout’ that really hooks you in. You want to see how this world deals with situations. It’s cynical and jadedness that when Lucy brings in her naivety and innocence to a predicament, it really shines bright and how it reflects and bounces off Maximus or The Ghoul. I’d like to see more of this should the show be greenlit for a second season.

Fallout Walton Goggins as The Ghoul in Fallout 2 Large
Walton Goggins (The Ghoul) in “Fallout”

One of my only gripes is the show is over scored. It likes to violate every scene with a classic song from the 60s (maybe even older) and while it is charming in the first few episodes, by episode 5, it’s overdone. It can get annoying and distracting pretty quickly.

    Fallout

There’s a lot that this show can cover, and I love the twists and turns of this first season. Yes, it’s jaded and cynical, but it surprisingly offers a lot of hope too (as it reaches the finale of the first season). And it has an interesting enough cliff-hanger of an ending that makes me want to see more and more of this world. A world destroyed by nuclear war is nothing new so it may have to rehash certain situations that we may have seen in other platforms and media but the characters it has introduced are engaging and its subversive anti-corporation messages are read loud and clear.

I want a second season. I want to see how much crazier this show can get.

    My Rating:
