A Stunning Journey Through Life and the Afterlife Begins in ‘Scarlet,’ Exclusively at SM Cinemas

A Dazzling New Tale from Academy Award®-Nominated Filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda

Time unravels, destinies shift, and emotions spark to life in Scarlet, the newest animated spectacle from celebrated director Mamoru Hosoda—now showing exclusively at SM Cinemas. Known for beloved classics like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Mirai (which earned a Best Animated Feature nomination at the 91st Academy Awards), Hosoda once again blends the fantastical with the deeply human.

    Scarlet 3

A Fresh Perspective on Revenge and Redemption

While Scarlet builds on timeless themes, it carries a surprisingly hopeful core. Hosoda shares that although the story draws inspiration from Hamlet—with its haunting reflections on vengeance—this film seeks a more uplifting path.

“The question presented to Scarlet is how to deal with the energy, how to forgive. There are many parallels to our current geo-political landscape and I wanted that reflected in the screenplay. We don’t really have an answer of how to fix that yet but there’s this collective desire of mankind to figure it out because of the cost of war,” Director Hosoda says.

With that, Scarlet becomes more than a princess’s quest for justice; it evolves into a stirring meditation on empathy and resilience.

A Haunting Vision of the Otherworld

Much of the film unfolds in Hosoda’s mesmerizing interpretation of the afterlife—aptly called the Otherworld. It is a realm that transcends simple understanding.

”A place where life and death coexist, and both past and future are all woven together. If you are not strong enough you will disappear into nothingness,” Hosoda says.

This ethereal landscape acts as both a sanctuary and a battleground for Scarlet’s inner transformation. Every step she takes is laced with mystery, danger, and unexpected warmth.

A Heroine’s Journey Filled with Courage

Beyond its rich themes and breathtaking animation, Scarlet stands out for its emotionally charged storytelling. The film invites viewers to reflect on what it means to heal, to hope, and to move forward despite unimaginable pain. It’s a cinematic experience that lingers—beautiful, stirring, and wonderfully human.

Joining the director on the prestigious Venice red carpet were Mana Ashida and Masaki Okada, who lend their voices to the film’s lead characters, Scarlet and Hijiri. The trio attended the photocall, press events, and premiere together, marking a proud moment for Japanese animation on the global stage.

    Watch the Trailer here:

A Princess, an Afterlife, and a Modern Man

At the heart of Scarlet is a gripping, emotional story that blends fantasy, romance, and time-bending elements.

The film follows Scarlet, a princess from the past consumed by hatred and grief. Her attempt at violent revenge ends in failure, sending her not back to her kingdom—but to the afterlife.

There, in a realm suspended between worlds, she meets Hijiri, a man from modern times whose compassion stands in stark contrast to the hatred that fuels her. As their paths cross, Hijiri’s kindness challenges her belief that revenge is the only way forward.

When Scarlet is forced to confront her nemesis once again, she faces a defining choice: Will she cling to anger and destruction, or open herself to a life beyond revenge?

Hosoda’s Message: Choosing Love in a Fractured World

    Scarlet VFF2

Scarlet is more than a fantasy tale; it’s a reflection of the world we live in now.

Hosoda drew inspiration from the state of the world after the pandemic, especially amid ongoing conflicts and division. Through Scarlet’s journey, he hopes to share a message of hope and connection.

“As we witness heartbreaking conflicts around the world, I believe that finding love and choosing to live together in unity is what will lead us towards something better. That’s why I want to share this new film with the world — now more than ever.”

With that, Scarlet becomes a deeply relevant story about empathy, healing, and the courage it takes to turn away from hatred.

    The Mastermind Behind the Magic

Hosoda’s ability to weave emotionally resonant stories with bold sci-fi and fantasy elements has made him one of the most respected directors in animation today.

Starting his career in 1991 at the legendary Toei Animation studio, Hosoda first made waves with Digimon Adventure(1999), a film that sparked a cultural phenomenon. His transition to freelance directing gave birth to some of the most beloved anime films of the 21st century, including:

    • The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) – a heartfelt coming-of-age time-travel tale
    • Summer Wars (2009) – a digital-age family epic
    • Wolf Children (2012) – a touching ode to motherhood
    • Mirai (2018) – an Academy Award® nominee for Best Animated Feature

Now, with Scarlet, Hosoda once again pushes the boundaries of animated storytelling—merging history, fantasy, and emotional truth in a stunning visual spectacle.

  • “Scarlet” by Mamoru Hosoda Is a Time-Bending Anime Masterpiece About Revenge, Forgiveness, and a Mysterious Afterlife

“Scarlet” by Mamoru Hosoda Is a Time-Bending Anime Masterpiece About Revenge, Forgiveness, and a Mysterious Afterlife

A New Chapter in Anime History Unfolds

Get ready to be transported beyond time and space. Acclaimed Japanese director Mamoru Hosoda—known for groundbreaking hits like Summer Wars, Wolf Children, and Mirai—returns with Scarlet, a visually arresting and emotionally rich animated epic. Premiering in Philippine cinemas this December 10, Scarlet reimagines the classic revenge story, blending fantasy, philosophy, and cutting-edge animation.

    Scarlet 1

A Princess Fueled by Rage, A World Beyond Death

At the heart of Scarlet is a princess—noble, fierce, and shattered. After witnessing the brutal murder of her father, she sets off on a journey of vengeance. But her mission fails—and she awakens in an ethereal afterlife unlike anything she could have imagined.

There, she meets a boy from our time, and together, they confront the past, their pain, and the true cost of revenge. It’s not just a fight—it’s a transformation.

    Pandemic Reflections, Shakespearean Roots

Director Mamoru Hosoda began writing Scarlet during the global COVID-19 lockdowns—a time that, for him, sparked deep reflection.

“Looking at the geo-political state of the world after COVID was a big point of inspiration for me. The idea that people can’t forgive these days still continues to this day and that brings a lot of worry. That influenced the start of this project for me, and I would like to pass on a positive message to the younger generation. In terms of revenge stories, Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a masterpiece. There’s this cycle of revenge that is still relevant today, which is why I weaved Shakespearean elements into the story and characters.”

With heavy inspiration from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Scarlet explores the timeless pull of revenge and the consequences it brings—not just to one life, but across generations and timelines.

    Animation That Transcends Borders

Visually, Scarlet is a breathtaking evolution of anime. Hosoda and his team at Studio Chizu embrace a hybrid style—merging the soul of hand-drawn Japanese animation with the expressive power of CG.

“The tools in animation are constantly evolving and improving. Until recently, style of animation was rooted in the country of origin, for example there’s this CG style of animation with Pixar in the US whereas in Europe it’s more artistic and, of course, Japan is known for anime (cell look). Through COVID and streamers, people were exposed to different animations. Disney and Pixar used to dominate the stage of animation. More recently, different styles have mixed and we’ve elevated the industry. Scarlet is much heavier on the CG which enables me as a director to get more into the character expression. There’s lots of CG, of course, but I wanted the hand drawn to still be preserved. If you look at Spider-Verse, they found a way to mix different styles to have a huge visual impact. I wanted for my film to have a shift in visual style. It feels and looks new and it allows us to show these bigger themes.”

In a world where audiences are now used to cross-cultural styles—think Spider-Verse or Arcane—Scarlet boldly experiments with visual storytelling, resulting in a fresh, immersive experience that feels both futuristic and deeply human.

More Than Revenge: A Message for Today’s Generation

Beyond the swordplay and spectacle lies the film’s emotional core. Hosoda wants viewers—especially the younger generation—to walk away with more than entertainment. He hopes Scarlet becomes a conversation starter.

“Looking at the present-day conflicts, this movie is intended to be a thought-provoking experience. I hope it becomes an entry point for conversation. I think many moviegoers will relate to this idea of revenge. For me, it’s a romantic idea to many people all over the world. There’s always a revenge story. Everyone has someone they can’t forgive. Scarlet too suffers from this but there’s a transformation. I want the audience to feel the process of change and what helps her realize there’s something more important than revenge.”

In an era marked by division and conflict, Scarlet invites us to ask: what if the true battle is the one within ourselves?

    Coming Soon to Philippine Cinemas

Scarlet has already captured the attention of global critics with premieres at Venice and Toronto film festivals. Now, Filipino anime lovers will have their chance to experience this cinematic gem on the big screen.

Final Thoughts: A Must-Watch Anime Experience

Powerful, poignant, and visually spellbinding—Scarlet is not just a movie, it’s a journey. Through timeless themes and cutting-edge artistry, Mamoru Hosoda once again proves that animation isn’t just for kids—it’s for anyone with a heart, a past, and a dream of something more.
