  • MOVIE REVIEW: Zach Cregger’s Take on ‘Resident Evil’ Is Scary AF and Funny as Hell

MOVIE REVIEW: Zach Cregger’s Take on ‘Resident Evil’ Is Scary AF and Funny as Hell

There is really nothing quiet like sitting in a packed cinema while watching a really good horror film. That was what my exact reaction to watching Zach Cregger’s Weapons last year, and he gave me the same experience with his take on the Resident Evil franchise. His film feels like a fresh setup for the wider universe. By intentionally avoiding familiar characters from the games and previous movies – while I have watched people play the game but not for long periods, and so all I know of the franchise comes from the film adaptations – so it’s a way for viewers unfamiliar with the lore to easily get in. He focuses purely on the simplicity of the story so that he can deliver extremely scary moments and absurd situations that elicit screams and laughter in equal measure.

Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who takes on an extra shift to deliver a critical medical package to Raccoon City General Hospital, miles up a mountain in the dead of winter. Motivated by news that his girlfriend might be expecting a baby, he lies about his car being equipped for traveling during heavy snow and embarks on the treacherous drive anyway. What he doesn’t know is that an outbreak has already overtaken the town, leaving the undead creatures of the franchise freely roaming the streets.

Abrams serves as an amazing foil for us to follow. Despite his rough, gruff attitude and the failure to communicate properly with his girlfriend over the news makes him difficult to empathize with at first, the moment he accidentally hits a woman on the road, he immediately stops to help her and rush her to the hospital. We all know in our seats that this is a massive mistake. But he does not know that, and while he could easily escape, he stays. From that moment, Cregger and co-screenwriter Shay Hatten have us completely rooting for him. Abrams possesses a wonderful everyman presence that keeps him relatable, delivering a fully committed performance that grounds the character (he really looks and acts terrified when things start happening) but also manages to amplify the comedy. He is exhausted, overworked, and just wants to earn money and to do a good job. As things get progressively weirder and weirder, he stubbornly soldiers on. It is such a clever, well-written character and Abrams plays it to a tee.

Cregger then assumes a directorial approach heavily inspired by the video game. Tight, over-the-shoulder camera angles following the sliver of light from Bryan’s cellphone turn every dark corner into a potential jump scare. The score enters and exits with surgical precision, at just the right time that you don’t realise you are being emotionally primed for frights or laughs. When Bryan swerves his light to illuminate a strange noise, the camera lags behind by just a fraction of a second – much like a video game – and the connection to the game is there and makes the whole experience feel really immersive. We are not just emotionally tied to Bryan; we are locked directly to what he sees. We are just as vulnerable as he is.

The storytelling moves at a fast-paced, action-packed pace. The rhythm is so good that Cregger and editor Joe Murphy pace the quiet moments with the thrilling ones. They steadily build the tension as we reach Raccoon City, straight into the heart of the infestation.

There is no real social commentary or grand metaphor that strikes me as I recall this movie, and for some reason, I don’t seem to mind at all. If anything, it is a realisation that Bryan ends up making about the possibility of him being a father, which happens at just the right moment, to heighten the stakes and the need to survive. What it does, though, the script uses this moment to deepen Bryan’s character, cementing our connection with him but makes no big statements either way.

At its core, this is just a straight-up horror film that happens to be wickedly funny. It’s very well-made; the filmmaking is precise and exquisite. It is exactly the kind of movie you really want to experience in a packed theater with your friends, and hope that it’s packed so that everyone is laughing and screaming with you. It’s an experience that should be shared collectively and, honestly, I really don’t mind watching it again. Sometimes a film can exist purely just for fun with no big ambitions for any higher purpose and that’s perfectly okay. It delivers what it promises, and for that, I absolutely adore it.

Zach Cregger Draws From the Original Games to Build a Terrifying New World in ‘Resident Evil,’ Opens September 16

Teeth, tentacles, blood, and plenty of nightmare fuel await audiences in Resident Evil, as director Zach Cregger creates a terrifying new chapter inspired by the iconic video game series.

Together with co-screenwriter Shay Hatten and creature effects supervisor Shane Mahan, Cregger developed a collection of brand-new monsters designed to make the infected world feel frightening, unpredictable, and disturbingly real.

    DF 09925 1

Everything had to have a shock value and a sense of realism to play against the humor, says Hatten.

Familiar Details for Resident Evil Fans

While Resident Evil tells a new story, longtime players may spot plenty of familiar details along the way.

A devoted fan of the games himself, Cregger drew inspiration from his own experiences exploring their eerie environments, including some recognizable items scattered throughout the film.

If you’ve played the games a ton, you won’t be able to help but notice some of the healing spray cans and some of the green herbs, says Cregger.

    Watch the official trailer:

One Terrifying Night in Raccoon City

In Resident Evil, medical courier Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, is tasked with transporting a package to Raccoon City.

What begins as another route quickly spirals into a nightmare.

As the night unfolds, zombies overrun the streets, plunging Bryan into a terrifying wave of mayhem and destruction. Surrounded by infected creatures and escalating danger, he must navigate a city rapidly descending into chaos.

And for fans of the games, Bryan’s journey may feel surprisingly familiar.

Bringing Video Game Language to the Big Screen

Cregger also pays tribute to the visual language of the Resident Evil games through the film’s camerawork.

Rather than simply borrowing recognizable monsters or locations, the director wanted audiences to experience the action from a perspective reminiscent of playing the games themselves.

    FRM 4510 f0961 sRGB

We are locked over Bryan’s shoulder because I’m really interested in honoring that video game language,” Cregger explains. “And with the games, you really are perched on the shoulder of someone. So, if Bryan is walking through a corridor, we’re mostly behind him. When he looks left, we swing over to see what he’s looking at. If he looks right, we kind of swing this way.

The approach places viewers close to Bryan as he moves through dark corridors and threatening environments, making every turn feel more immediate.

    Horror, Humor, and Non-Stop Energy

For Abrams, Cregger’s interpretation of Resident Evil is built to be experienced with a crowd.

There’s a non-stop kind of energy to Resident Evil,” says Abrams, “and because it has both horror and comedic elements, you want to experience the film with others. You want to hear the reactions and the energy of those around you, who are screaming or laughing, or both.

    1 6

That combination of horror and comedy gives the film another layer of unpredictability. One moment may bring nervous laughter, while the next could unleash another grotesque creature or terrifying encounter.

A Labor of Love for Zach Cregger

For Cregger, bringing Resident Evil to cinemas is also deeply personal.

As a longtime admirer of the games, the filmmaker hopes devoted fans will recognize his affection for the franchise while newcomers discover an entirely new story within its iconic world.

Going to see a horror movie in a theatre is a communal experience, and therefore you’re tapping into an energy that makes the experience greater than it would be if you’re sitting on your couch doing it all by yourself, says the filmmaker. “And to be able to go on that roller coaster ride with a roomful of strangers, it just it makes the ride more fun.

With zombies roaming the streets, original creatures lurking in the darkness, and plenty of nods waiting for eagle-eyed gamers, Resident Evil promises a thrilling new trip into Raccoon City.

Resident Evil unleashes its terrifying world in Philippine cinemas, including IMAX, on September 16. Distributed locally by Columbia Pictures PH.

Austin Abrams Faces His Worst Delivery Route Yet in “Resident Evil,” Tickets Available Now!

Austin Abrams is heading straight into Raccoon City, and his character is having what may be the worst work shift imaginable.

In director Zach Cregger’s new take on Resident Evil, Abrams plays Bryan, an ordinary medical courier whose routine delivery turns into a terrifying fight for survival. Tasked with transporting coolers, Bryan soon finds himself navigating a night filled with infected humans, mutated creatures, and escalating danger.

Unlike the highly trained heroes often associated with survival horror, Bryan enters the nightmare with no combat experience and no special skills. That vulnerability places audiences directly in his shoes as he tries to stay alive long enough to complete his journey.

    DF 03540
Austin Abrams as Bryan in Resident Evil

Resident Evil opens in Philippine cinemas, including IMAX, on September 16. Tickets are available now.

Zach Cregger Found the Right Everyman in Austin Abrams

For Cregger, casting Abrams was an easy decision.

The two previously worked together on Weapons, and that collaboration gave the director confidence that Abrams could bring the right balance of humor, fear, and relatability to Bryan.

Austin is so well-suited for this part, says Cregger. We had an amazing experience together on Weapons and we really connected creatively. So, when it was time to get Resident Evil going, I didn’t have to think too hard about casting Austin.

Cregger also wanted audiences to experience the chaos through someone who feels believable and grounded.

Before everything goes sideways,” Cregger explains. “Bryan has no training and no backup. He’s just a guy whose shift has turned into a survival horror story that he had no way to prepare for. He’s sucked into a nightmare and burdened with this sacred mission that’s going to take him into the true heart of darkness.

That setup makes Bryan less of an action hero and more of a stand-in for the audience. Every threat becomes more intense because he is figuring things out as he goes.

    Watch the official trailer:

Austin Abrams Embraces Cregger’s Mix of Horror and Humor

Abrams was equally enthusiastic about working with Cregger again.

For the actor, part of the appeal came from the filmmaker’s ability to shift between fear and comedy without losing momentum.

Zach’s humor makes me laugh because it’s so sharp,” says the actor. “I really love his work because in one moment Zach can freak you out, and a second later, make you laugh. It’s his kind of flavoring.

That contrast between tension and humor could give this version of Resident Evil a distinctive personality while still delivering the mayhem and horror fans expect from the franchise.

Bryan Is Someone Audiences Can Easily Root For

Executive producer Miri Yoon also points to Abrams’ natural performance as one of Bryan’s biggest strengths.

Austin’s portrayal is very natural and honest. He’s so wonderful at playing the everyman, who stands in for all of us who have never handled a weapon and have no fighting or survival skills. Bryan is just a guy trying to get through a really bad day full of mayhem and gore.

    DF 04181 r
Austin Abrams as Bryan in Resident Evil

For Bryan, surviving the night is not about being the strongest person in the room. It is about adapting quickly, pushing through fear, and finding a way forward even when the odds keep getting worse.

Executive producer Roy Lee believes that sense of resilience is exactly what will keep audiences invested in the character.

Austin brings a real sense of resilience to the role. He has the physical presence to handle the intense action, but he also gives the character heart and hope, so that you’re constantly rooting for him to survive the night.

With infected humans, mutated creatures, and Raccoon City standing in his path, Bryan has plenty to survive.

Zach Cregger Brings Relentless Survival Horror to “Resident Evil” Opens September 16, Tickets Available Now!

For director Zach Cregger, taking on Resident Evil is more than another horror project. It is the chance to step inside a world he has admired for years.

A longtime fan of the videogame franchise, Cregger is bringing his own style of suspense, chaos, and dark humor to the big screen. Following the acclaim of Barbarian and Weapons, the filmmaker now turns his attention to one of survival horror’s most recognizable names.

The games are a great standard for survival horror,” says Cregger. “I’m celebrating everything I love about them by telling a story that could exist on the edges of one of the games.

    DF 03433 r

A New Story Built for Non-Stop Tension

Rather than retelling a familiar chapter from the games, the new Resident Evil introduces an original story centered on Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams.

His assignment appears simple enough: deliver a package.

Of course, nothing stays simple for long.

Bryan soon finds himself trapped in a terrifying race for survival as the night grows increasingly dangerous. Mutated creatures, infected beings, and unforgiving surroundings turn his journey into a relentless nightmare.

Cregger describes the film as a constantly moving experience that pushes its main character, and the audience, deeper into danger.

I leaned into the visceral stuff, he continues. The movie follows a person from point A to point B; it’s like a real-time journey, where we’re propelled deeper and deeper into the depths of Hell. It’s a constant, ‘Go! Go! Go!

    Watch the official trailer:

Raccoon City Returns With a Fresh Perspective

The film also brings audiences back to Raccoon City, one of the most iconic settings in the Resident Evil universe.

This time, however, the goal is to make the familiar location feel unpredictable again.

Producer Roy Lee believes Cregger has found a way to honor the franchise while creating a cinematic experience that feels distinct.

Our film is a roller coaster ride of non-stop action,” says Lee, “and it’s set in the world of Raccoon City, one of the game’s most memorable locales. Zach is giving audiences something they have not experienced before in cinema.

That combination of familiarity and surprise is also central to what producer Asad Qizilbash believes makes Cregger such a strong fit for the material.

    DF 09925

The best Resident Evil games don’t just scare you; they make you afraid of what’s coming next. That’s cinema, says Qizilbash.

He adds that Cregger has a particular talent for building tension before suddenly disrupting expectations.

Zach is brilliant at weaponizing tension, then breaking it with something shocking, strange or darkly funny. That filmmaker instinct he has, is perfect for Resident Evil: you think you know what’s going to happen, and then Zach shows you something you never expected.

An Immersive Horror Ride From Start to Finish

For longtime franchise producer Robert Kulzer, the film’s biggest strength is its commitment to keeping viewers fully immersed in Bryan’s ordeal.

Zach wanted to create a ride, an immersive experience. He wanted to take the audience by the hand in minute one, take them on this journey, and not let them go till minute 90. Zach delivered all that and more.

    DF 00416 1

Producer Victor Hadida, who has also been part of the Resident Evil film franchise for decades, was equally impressed by Cregger’s approach.

Hadida says he was “blown away by Zach’s take,” adding that the film is designed to have audiences “jumping and cheering and going out of their minds.”

A Fresh Nightmare Begins September 16

With an original story, a relentless pace, and a return to the dangerous streets of Raccoon City, Resident Evil sets out to deliver a new kind of survival-horror experience for both longtime fans and newcomers.

At the center of it all is one man, one delivery, and one increasingly impossible night.
