Colleen Hoover’s ‘Reminders of Him’ Film Adaptation Now Showing in Philippine Cinemas

A Beloved Colleen Hoover Story Reaches the Big Screen

Fans of emotional storytelling have something special to look forward to. Reminders of Him, the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s #1 New York Times bestselling novel, is now showing in Philippine cinemas.

    Ledger Diem Grace

The moving drama stars Maika Monroe, Tyriq Withers, Lauren Graham, and Rudy Pankow, bringing Hoover’s unforgettable characters to life in a story filled with heartbreak, healing, and the hope for redemption.

At its heart, Reminders of Him explores themes of motherhood, forgiveness, and the enduring strength of love, making it one of the author’s most poignant stories to reach the big screen.

A Female-Led Vision Behind the Film

Guiding the project is director Vanessa Caswill, who leads a remarkable all-female filmmaking team that carefully translated Hoover’s deeply emotional novel into a cinematic experience.

For Hoover, Caswill’s creative vision stood out from the very beginning.

“Vanessa had such a clear vision from the start,” Hoover says. “She understood the exact tone and feel I was hoping the film would have. She approached the film as an artist fully immersed in every detail. Watching her shape the story with that level of intention was incredible.”

Caswill’s thoughtful approach ensures the film captures the delicate emotional balance that readers loved in the book.

Turning a Bestseller into a Screenplay

The screenplay is written by Lauren Levine, who collaborated closely with Hoover throughout the adaptation process. Levine was particularly drawn to Caswill’s unique storytelling style and visual sensibility.

“Vanessa brings both poetry and precision to her work. Her use of color and light, and the way she collaborates with actors, gives every frame a sense of intimacy. She is European, telling a deeply American story, and that perspective adds dimension without creating distance. The material demands restraint, and Vanessa approached it with such honesty that the film never loses its balance.”

Levine also emphasizes the importance of maintaining emotional authenticity while adapting such powerful material for film.

A Story of Loss, Redemption, and Second Chances

Reminders of Him begins with a life-altering tragedy.

Kenna Rowan (Maika Monroe) is sent to prison after a devastating accident involving her boyfriend. After serving her sentence, she returns to her hometown in Wyoming seven years later determined to rebuild her life.

But her greatest wish remains uncertain—meeting the daughter she has never seen.

Kenna’s child, Diem, is being raised by her paternal grandparents Grace (Lauren Graham) and Patrick (Bradley Whitford). Their grief and resentment create a painful barrier between Kenna and the life she hopes to reclaim.

Amid the tension, Kenna finds unexpected understanding in Ledger Ward (Tyriq Withers), a former NFL player who now works as a bartender. As their connection grows, Kenna begins to believe that healing—and possibly love—may still be within reach.

Yet the path toward forgiveness is far from easy.

A Creative Team That Immediately Connected

Producer Gina Matthews joined the project after Universal Pictures secured the film adaptation. She recalls how quickly the team found common ground while discussing the story.

“I had a great meeting with Vanessa, Colleen and Lauren, and everything aligned very quickly,” Matthews says. “What stood out was the cohesion of the group. It was a female-led team at every level, working from a shared understanding of the material.”

This creative alignment helped shape a film that remains faithful to the emotional core of Hoover’s novel.

Capturing the Heart of Colleen Hoover’s Writing

For Caswill, adapting Hoover’s work was both exciting and challenging. Known for her ability to balance emotional depth with subtle humor, Hoover’s writing required careful handling on screen.

“One of the things I find most special about Colleen’s writing is that, even when she is dealing with very painful material, there is always a dry wit running through it,” Caswill says.

“With a story this emotional, that balance matters. It cannot become relentlessly heavy, but it also cannot soften the weight of what these characters are going through. We were always aiming for that space in between.”

Caswill adds that staying true to the spirit of the novel guided the entire filmmaking process.

“My instinct was to stay faithful to the book and trust that the visual language would come naturally from the material. If I could capture the heart of the story honestly, I was confident the film would find its own voice.”

  • Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers Lead the Heartfelt Big-Screen Adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s “Reminders of Him”

Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers Lead the Heartfelt Big-Screen Adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s “Reminders of Him”

A Bestselling Phenomenon Comes to Life

When a novel captures millions of readers worldwide, bringing it to the big screen requires more than star power—it demands emotional truth. For the film adaptation of Reminders of Him, #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover made a decisive choice, personally selecting Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers to portray Kenna Rowan and Ledger Ward.

With Hoover closely involved as co-writer and producer, the transition from page to screen becomes something intimate and intentional. Joining Monroe and Withers is an impressive supporting cast including Rudy Pankow, Lainey Wilson, Lauren Graham, and Bradley Whitford—each adding depth to this powerful cinematic experience.

And just like that, a beloved story finds a new voice.

    1 7

    A Mother’s Return and a Community’s Resistance

At the heart of Reminders of Him is Kenna Rowan, a young woman returning to her hometown after serving five years in prison for a tragic accident. Time has passed, but the consequences remain.

Kenna’s singular hope? To meet her daughter, Diem—the child she has never seen.

However, Diem’s custodial grandparents stand firm, determined to shield the young girl from the painful past. Every attempt Kenna makes to reconnect is met with resistance. Is redemption possible when trust has been shattered?

Amid the tension, an unexpected ally emerges: Ledger Ward, a local bar owner and former best friend of Kenna’s late boyfriend, Scotty. Caught between loyalty to the past and compassion for Kenna’s present, Ledger becomes the emotional bridge in a fractured community.

Layered with heartbreak, longing, and fragile hope, the story unfolds as a poignant exploration of forgiveness and second chances.

Maika Monroe Captures Kenna’s Fragile Strength

Taking on a role as emotionally demanding as Kenna requires restraint, nuance, and vulnerability—qualities Colleen Hoover immediately recognized in Maika Monroe.

“Maika captured that perfectly in her audition,” co-writer and producer Colleen Hoover says. “She has this incredible ability to hold back until the emotion needs to surface. When it does, it’s beautiful. Even in moments of silence, she is doing so much. I cannot imagine anyone else playing Kenna.”

Known for her performances in Longlegs and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Monroe approached the role with careful preparation. Turning repeatedly to Hoover’s novel, she sought to understand the unspoken layers beneath Kenna’s dialogue.

“It was incredibly helpful to have the book as a reference,” Monroe says. “There is a level of detail there that you cannot always get from a script. I turned to it often, especially before scenes where Kenna says very little.”

Kenna’s transformation—before and after the accident—is stark. Once lively and carefree, she returns home guarded, shaped by grief and guilt.

“Before the accident, she is fun and full of life, and her relationship with Scotty feels easy. Afterward, she is completely changed. That kind of trauma never leaves you. Even in your happiest moments, there is still pain underneath that never fully goes away.”

Subtle yet stirring, Monroe’s portrayal promises to anchor the film in authenticity.

Tyriq Withers Brings Depth to Ledger Ward

Opposite Monroe, Tyriq Withers steps into the role of Ledger Ward—a former NFL player who returns to Laramie to help care for Diem, the daughter of his deceased best friend.

Ledger is steady on the surface, but beneath that strength lies unresolved grief.

“Ledger needed to feel believable as a former football player, but also emotionally grounded. Tyriq has that presence. He brings strength, warmth and a surprising sensitivity. He kept rising to the top of every conversation,” says producer Gina Matthews.

For Withers, the connection to the character was immediate and personal.

“What drew me to Ledger was how closely his story mirrors parts of my own life,” Withers says. “He is carrying grief while trying to be strong for everyone around him. There is a weight he does not talk about. Playing him allowed me to explore my own experiences and learn more about how I cope, how I love, and how I move through pain.”

Having Hoover present during production added another layer of assurance.

“Having Colleen there was incredible,” Withers says. “She is open and generous, and that gave me confidence. When the person who created the character tells you, ‘You are Ledger,’ it allows you to trust your instincts completely.”

‘Reminders of Him’ Comes to Life: Colleen Hoover’s Heartfelt Story Hits the Big Screen on March 11

A Global Literary Sensation Comes to Life

From bookstore shelves to cinema screens, Reminders of Him is making an extraordinary leap. Now, the story that captured millions of hearts is reimagined as a feature film set to open in Philippine cinemas on March 11.

A Devastating Mistake and a Long Road Home

At the heart of Reminders of Him is Kenna Rowan (Maika Monroe). What begins as a seemingly perfect outing with her boyfriend takes a tragic turn—one irreversible mistake sending her to prison.

Seven years later, newly released, Kenna returns to a community that refuses to forget. Determined but vulnerable, she attempts to rebuild her life from the ground up. Most importantly, she hopes to reconnect with her daughter, Diem—a child she has never had the chance to know.

Yet forgiveness does not come easily. Trust must be earned. And as Kenna fights to prove she has changed, the film tenderly asks whether love can truly heal even the deepest wounds.

    Inspired by Real Conversations

The idea for Reminders of Him began with Hoover’s younger sister, who was studying prison reform in graduate school. Their conversations left a lasting impression.

“We talked a lot about what people go through after they get out,” Hoover says. “She was so passionate about it that it stayed with me. After one of those conversations, I felt compelled to write about a woman whose life is shaped by a tragedy that sends her to prison, and what it means to try to rebuild her life after she is released.”

From those discussions emerged Kenna—a flawed yet deeply human mother fighting for redemption.

Hoover’s own experiences shaped the emotional core of the story.

“My experiences as a mom influenced this story a lot,” Hoover says. “I was immediately drawn to Kenna and her longing to be part of her daughter’s life. I cannot imagine having a child and not being able to be in their life.”

    A Deeply Personal Adaptation

Producer and co-writer Lauren Levine immediately recognized the cinematic potential of the novel.

“When we worked on Confess, Colleen came to set and immediately stood out for how instinctively she understands film and television,” Levine says. “Every question I asked was met with an answer that pushed the material further. Over time, we developed a great creative shorthand. When I read Reminders of Him, I ended up in a puddle of tears, which does not happen often to me. I called Colleen right away and said, ‘I think this is a movie.”

Having previously collaborated on Confess, Levine admired Hoover’s instinctive understanding of visual storytelling.

Throughout production, Hoover remained closely involved in refining the screenplay.

“I did not anticipate rewriting as much as I did,” Hoover says. “But being there every day meant I could see immediately when something was not working, or when Vanessa or the actors had questions. We could talk through it and adjust in the moment. That responsiveness became one of the most rewarding parts of the process for me.”

The result is a film adaptation shaped with care, collaboration, and authenticity.

    image

Love, Loss, and the Hope of Second Chances

While tragedy sets the story in motion, love sustains it. The film thoughtfully explores the many forms love can take—between parent and child, between romantic partners, and among friends bound by loyalty and shared pain.

    Hoover reflects:

“I have always been drawn to stories that tell the truth and still leave room for tenderness,” Hoover says. “Stories that make you feel everything all at once. This one lives in the messiness of love and the aftermath of tragedy, but it also believes in connection. It believes that even when nothing comes easily, people can still find their way back to themselves, and to each other.”

In that belief lies the film’s quiet power. Even when reconciliation seems impossible, even when the past casts a long shadow, hope remains.

Catch It in Cinemas on March 11

Emotional, resonant, and ultimately uplifting, Reminders of Him arrives in Philippine cinemas on March 11. Fans of the novel—and newcomers alike—can expect a moving cinematic experience that lingers long after the final scene.

Some stories stay with you forever. This is one of them.
