‘2 Valid IDs’ to Compete at Prestigious Mar del Plata International Film Festival in Argentina

A familiar Filipino frustration is about to take center stage in Argentina.

“2 Valid IDs,” a powerful social realist drama starring Cinemalaya 2026 Best Actress Marietta “Pokwang” Subong, has been selected to compete at the 41st Mar del Plata International Film Festival, one of Latin America’s most prestigious cinematic events.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan, the film will represent the Philippines in the festival’s International Feature Film Competition, where it will go head-to-head with 13 other films from around the world.

Taking place from November 5 to 15, 2026, the festival will also feature new works by internationally acclaimed directors Danny Boyle, Miwa Nishikawa, and Simon Stone.

For Philippine cinema, the selection marks another exciting international milestone. But for the filmmakers behind “2 Valid IDs,” it also presents an opportunity to bring an all-too-familiar Filipino reality to a global audience.

One Simple Requirement, One Desperate Fight for Survival

We’ve all heard it before: “Kailangan po ng two valid IDs.”

For many Filipinos, the requirement is an inconvenient but routine part of everyday transactions. For others, particularly those living in poverty, it can become an almost impossible obstacle.

That frustrating reality drives the story of “2 Valid IDs,” written by award-winning screenwriter Abet Pagdagdagan Raz.

The film follows Sylvia, an impoverished farmer desperately trying to claim money sent by a relative through a remittance center. Her husband, Ramon, is suffering from severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and the money is urgently needed to pay for his medical treatment.

But when Sylvia reaches the counter, she encounters a requirement that threatens everything: she must present two valid government-issued identification cards.

The problem? She doesn’t have a single one.

What begins as a seemingly ordinary financial transaction soon becomes an emotionally charged struggle against a system that refuses to bend, even when someone’s life is at stake.

Through Sylvia’s predicament, the film asks a troubling question: What happens when the people who need help the most are the very ones who cannot meet the requirements to receive it?

Pokwang Steps Into the Spotlight With a Career-Defining Role

Best known for her sharp comedic timing and larger-than-life personality, Pokwang takes on one of her most emotionally demanding roles as Sylvia.

Her performance has already earned her the Best Actress award at Cinemalaya 2026, further establishing her range as a performer beyond comedy.

In “2 Valid IDs,” Pokwang portrays a woman whose desperation is matched only by her determination to keep her family afloat. Sylvia’s struggles reflect those of countless Filipinos who must navigate complicated systems while dealing with financial hardship and personal crises.

Joining Pokwang is a formidable ensemble featuring veteran actors Joey Marquez and Meryll Soriano, alongside Zaijian Jaranilla.

Together, they bring to life a story that finds its emotional weight not in extraordinary circumstances, but in the painful realities of ordinary people trying to survive.

Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan Exposes the Human Cost of Red Tape

For director Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan, the film’s premise may sound absurd, but its implications are deeply serious.

It’s only in the Philippines that we are asked to show 2 valid IDs to get another ID. What happens to those who don’t have any? What happens to the people trapped in a chaotic and inhumane system?, Asuncion-Dagñalan stressed.

Her questions strike at the heart of the film’s social commentary.

While identification requirements are intended to establish identity and protect transactions, “2 Valid IDs” examines what happens when those safeguards become barriers for people who lack the resources to comply.

The director emphasized that the film “is more than a story of bureaucracy, it is a reflection of the truth where access to basic needs is hindered by poverty, excessive red tape, rigid rules, and a system that demands documentation rather than urgency and compassion.”

It’s a subject that resonates strongly in the Philippines, where securing government-issued identification can itself involve navigating multiple requirements, expenses, and procedures.

Yet the film’s message extends beyond any single country’s bureaucracy. At its core is a universal conflict between following institutional rules and recognizing human suffering.

From ‘Blue Room’ to the International Stage

“2 Valid IDs” also marks another significant achievement for Asuncion-Dagñalan, whose filmmaking career has been distinguished by emotionally resonant stories and critically recognized work.

Her previous feature, “Blue Room,” received the Best Foreign Film award at the LA Femme International Film Festival. The filmmaker also earned Best Director honors at Cinemalaya and the FAMAS Awards.

With her latest project, Asuncion-Dagñalan continues her exploration of social realities, this time focusing on how seemingly small bureaucratic demands can have devastating consequences for marginalized communities.

The production brings together a strong team of Filipino film professionals.

Executive producers Geo Lomuntad, Claudia Diaz Cojuangco, Ben Tsai, HJ Li, Paolo Fernandez, Mitch Fernandez, Jim Baltazar, and Lydia Gapas supported the project.

Behind the scenes, the film features cinematography by Neil Daza, production design by Mao Fadul, editing by Vanessa Ubas-De Leon, and sound design by Jannina Mikaela Minglanilla.

Musicians Mikey Amistoso and Jazz Nicolas provide the film’s musical score.

Their combined efforts bring a distinctly Filipino experience to the screen while giving the story the emotional depth needed to connect with international audiences.

A Filipino Story That Demands to Be Heard

As “2 Valid IDs” prepares for its South American premiere, its selection at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival offers another platform for Filipino filmmakers to share stories that challenge, provoke, and inspire conversation.

Competing alongside 13 international features, the film carries a message that is both culturally specific and universally relevant.

After all, the frustration of being turned away for lacking proper documentation is something many people can recognize. But when access to urgently needed medical care hangs in the balance, the consequences become far more devastating.

By placing Sylvia’s struggle at the center of the narrative, “2 Valid IDs” reminds viewers that behind every application, transaction, and institutional requirement is a person whose circumstances may not fit neatly into the rules.

And sometimes, the difference between compassion and indifference can come down to something as ordinary as two pieces of identification.

“2 Valid IDs” will compete in the International Feature Film Competition at the 41st Mar del Plata International Film Festival, happening November 5 to 15, 2026, in Argentina.
